AAA roundup

By Score Atlanta

Buford 13, North Oconee 0: Matthew Bonadies kicked 42- and 47-yard field goals for host Buford. A North Oconee fumble was caused by a merciless Buford defense, then Taylor Mitchell found Mikey Bart for a 20-yard touchdown before the half. Neither team scored in the second half.

Cartersville 24, Blessed Trinity 23: Host Cartersville used an interception by Brandon Wells with two seconds remaining on a fake field goal to seal the win. Kalin Heath scored from 20 yards out and Preston Slemp added a 30-yard field goal in the first half. Brandon Long put Cartersville ahead 17-7 on a 5-yard run. Quarterback Brooks Barden scored on a 1-yard run to put Lovejoy on top for good.

North Oconee was the host and also has a very good team….best defensive game I have seen in a long time…neither team deserved to lose this one……now on to Columbus to visit a very good C C team…..also congrats to North Hall….

Since AJC doesn’t cover south GA teams from smaller classifications, here’s a recap of the Peach/Pierce contest:

Pierce County (10-1; #1 1-AAA) hosted Peach County (10-1; #2 2-AAA) in the second round. Pierce got on the board first with a 46 yard TD reception from their super wideout Veal (who also carries a 100.3 GPA and is on pace to be his class Salutatorian). From their Peach County scored 43 unanswered point included 15 points in 2 plays to close out the first half and lead 15-7 heading into the break. Peach County dominance continued in the third quarter where the Trojans outgained Pierce 175 yards to 5. KeyShawn Lowe ran for 184 of the more than 300 rushed for by the Trojans while Greg Williams added 170 through the air including 3 touchdowns, 2 to DeMarcus Robinson. Peach County moved into Pierce County territory on each of their 12 possessions. Peach moves on to play North Hall in Gainesville next week.

This roundup is weak. “put Lovejoy up for good”??? Where are the editor’s at when you need them?
Cartersville and BT deserve better coverage than this. Thanks Trojan Sailor for your update. Hope AJC compensates you for your efforts.

I think it was a great game plan by the BT coaches. To have 5 turnovers and go ahead with 5 minutes left. The fake field goal was the right call on the road. Just didn’t work out. Good luck to Cartersville. They made the plays on the final drive when they needed them.

I was pulling for you BT. I have read no details on the fake field goal with 2 seconds left. How far was the field goal? Does your kicker have it in him? If it was a FG that could be made, then what is up with that call? Somebody, details please…thanks

From our vantage point, the BT kicker from the game fllm we saw on him had plenty of leg, and kicked well from seeing him. We asked some of the parents from BT about it after the game and they were surprised as well, since the snapper had never thrown a pass in a game. What is even more weird was that why would the snapper not be told to throw the ball away if the kid was covered. At least they could have kicked the ball on 4th down. BT defense was one of the best we have seen.

The fake kick happened with 7 seconds left. Both coaching staffs are very good. BT had seen on film that the end had always played the block vs play the ball. This time he played the ball. It was a very good call by the Cartersville coaches or that player, on his own. The call by the BT coaches was one that you look back on and go “why”? But after thinking about it the play was a great call that did not work. The game was not lost by BT on that play. 6 turnovers lost the game for them. Even with 6 turnovers the team played great. The team was prepared for Cartersville. The Defense and offense played well. Cartersville has a good team with a few very talented players. It was a classic Georgia high Scholl playoff football game! It will be an experience both sides will never forget. Win or lose. Great job coaches and players from both sides!

That was a mind bogglingly bad call by BT on the fake field goal. You bring the whole season down to one play that has a low probability of working. The smart call is to kick the chip shot, go to OT, and let your whole defense who had been playing great, have opportunities to make plays. College or pro coach would be looking for a new job this morning after that horrible call.

Cartersville took a knee in the end zone on the final play, which made the final 24-23. Score was 24-21 when the FG attempt/interception took place.

Great call by the BT coaching staff – Cartersville just made the play to stop it. If it had been successful everyone would be posting about what a gutsy genius the coach was, instead everyone’s a Saturday morning quarterback.

BT was in a position to win the game outright with 0:07 seconds to go, despite trailing 17-7 at one point, and having committed 5 turnovers. That’s both good coaching, and a team of kids that doesn’t quit. Great game and good lucky to Cartersville.

Cartersville got the ball back on the one yard line and took a safety on the last play of the game. The fake field goal call was one of the worst coaching calls I’ve ever seen. After having 6 turnovers we were still in the game with 7 seconds left. Our kicker could have easily made the field goal and sent the game in to overtime. The coaches should have let our PLAYERS win the game instead of making the call to use a trick play that had a low probability of success.

We are indeed thankful on this Saturday morning, he made such a goofy call. Maybe you might want to go to Stats.com and see the percentages on these type of “gutsy” calls.

BT Ending – Bt was down 24 to 21 with 7 seconds left. B/T was set up for about a 27 yard FG to tie. BT faked the FG and passed th ball on a down and out in the end zone and the Carteersville DB stepped in fron and ran it out to the 1. Cartersville took a knee and thus a safety. B/T had 5 turnovers in the game.

It’s easy to bring out the old “Saturday Morning QB” saying, I really get tired of hearing it as if it takes away anyone’s right to analyze decisions made by a coaching staff. I think everyone in the Stadium was in shock at the decision to try the fake field goal. It was just a very bad decision when we could have sent the game into OT with a field goal.

Cartersvilleman – just a guess but if BT’s QB suddenly went out to hold for the Field Goal attempt, it may have tipped off the play! While the holder had not thrown a pass in a game before, I am sure that the play was NOT something that the coaches drew up on the palm of his hand before BT ran it. The pass was a tight spiral that the Cartersville LB stepped in front of – not a floater or a wobbly duck pass.

BT2 – If “everyone in the stadium was in shock at the decision” wouldn’t you agree that it had a chance to catch Cartersville by surprise? Don’t forget that it was only 3rd down. An incomplete pass left time on the clock to still kick the field goal and go to overtime. Even if BT was sacked on the play, the field goal was still within range. As was mentioned earlier, based on film, C’Ville had always played to block the field goal. Great play by the kid (or the coaches) to cover the release and make the play on the ball.

Interesting also to note that on almost every offensive play of the 4th quarter the BT fans were yelling to “hold onto the ball” – maybe 5 turnovers in the game made the coaches leery of going to an overtime?

And by the way – I think there is a big difference between “analyzing decisions” and taking cheap shots anonymously on and internet comment forum. “Mind bogglingly bad call”? – right, sure.

I do know that the coaches on either sideline know a hell of a lot more than the parents in the stands, and way more than anyone on in a web comment thread (me included).

Your school had a great season, and your kids played their hearts out last night – it was a great game that came down to the last play (or next to last play). Tip your cap to the kid who made the play to save the game for his team.

What is “mind boggling” are your comments. An idiot in the stands would even be smart enough to see if your quarterback came in at the last second, and would be obvious even to a dead person (Vince), and for what its worth, maybe your quarterback should accept some of the blame, which again we are glad he made some poor decisions (again just like your coach) that helped us win. If our coach made this same type of decision he knows he would here it from us, because MOST of us in our stands know the game of football. Maybe if your parents spent les time drinking before the game and at half time, they might see the game a bit “clearer”.

BT hit the Lotto when Coach McFarlin became head coach and it is disappointing to hear fans who don’t know what they’re talking about second guess the fake field goal call. Based on their scouting and film review, they made the decision to make that call well in advance of the game if it came down to it and the kids on the team were told this. In many respects, it was the perfect call. 7 seconds to go with a timeout left. 5 scenarios could have happened bobbled hold/bad snap – timout called – kick on 4th down, incomp pass – kick on 4th down, comp pass short of endzone – timeout called – kick on 4th down, TD, and the worst senario – int – which is what happened. The fact that BT could come back and score 2 4th qtr TD’s and be in a position to win the game after all those turnovers is a testament to both the kids and the great coaching staff. These kids would follow Coach McFarlin to hell and back and NONE of them were second-quessing that call. Also, Cartersville is good – real good. Congrats to them.

Prior to Coach McFarlin’s arrival BT had not won a playoff game and had been a rare participant in the playoffs. He has established a culture of toughness and committment that has resulted in the first 2 playoff victories in school history and the first 9 win season. He has established a system down to the junior titans where the offensive and defensive schemes are taught early on. Despite losing a lot of key seniors, BT will reload and be good again next year and the freshman class is loaded. The BT future is bright indeed – thank you Coach McFarlin.

Look at the replay of the last drive here:
http://ghsa.playonsports.com/events/46059
Last few plays start at the 1:18:00 mark. It’s pretty obvious that the holder made a poor decision after he was flushed onto his back foot by an edge rusher. He got nothing on the ball, and should have been coached to throw it to the back of the end zone so only his player(6′5″ TE) could get it. Kicker from BT is OK, but kick was well within his range, and kicking is something he’s experienced in game – unlike holder, who hadn’t thrown a pass before. Play was poorly designed and executed – kicker never sold the kick and froze the defender by following thru or faking the high snap, and the right handed holder should have thrown to his left side, where he was facing. Instead, he had to get up, and roll out(turning his back to the receiver) and did not see the defender in his grill. He panicked, and threw it off his back foot. It’s HS ball, but the play was poorly designed, and poorly executed, and it was a pressure packed situation. All the more reason not to roll the dice in that situation. Feel bad for the seniors – they deserved better than to end this way on a bad decision by the coaches.

I agree CanesIntegrity and completely disagree with Cartersvilleman. The call was a good one, it put BT in a position to win the game. We had a smart LB in Wells who saw the TE break from the line of scrimmage and recognized something was up. The receiver if uncovered had an easy TD. Wells dropped and broke on the ball and made a great heads up play. One that a lot of players would have missed. Great hard fought game by both teams.

Thanks for the video link, Bummed. I think it was a gutsy call but a good one. The throw was very short and delivered late. The holder could have just squared up and lobbed the ball to the corner and had either a TD or an incomplete pass.

Missed fake FG in the last few seconds is not the way you won’t the season to end nor with 5 fumbles. I going to use a baseball saying here “make them beat you on your best pitch”. So the question is was that the titans best pitch. When I saw BT play Pius I thought it strange that their QB is the punters blocking back. I was told they always do that since that coach has been there. Alway the fake is ready with someone who is use to throwing the ball. The HOT read or fake is or can be on. Same guy holds FG’s. It may have been the right call but you have a lesser player no disrespect implied trying to carry it out. You have to weigh surprise against execution. Win with your best player not a backup. In a playoff game you have to acknowledge everyone’s awareness will be at a higher level. Your opponent will be more ready this was not game 3 or 4 of the season. Well done Cartersville you were ready!

Yeah, PEACH COUNTY, you know all about domination, since you were led by the scruff of the neck to drink from the deep bowl of it by Carver just a couple of weeks ago. But then, that’s why people drink– to forget. :)

Trojan Sailor

November 25th, 2012

OK, Demetrio I think that anyone who’s allowed to play an entire half with 12 players on offense should be able to do quite well. Carver was allowed by the refs to do just that. There’s a Youtube video by ‘wjubryant’ that shows it. The Peach County coaches brought this up to the refs after each play, but were routinely ignored. They have now sent the video to the GHSA for action.

Carver has a solid team, no question about it. But to say that a 9 point win (with a clearly unfair and illegal advantage) was dominance is certainly a bridge too far. Enjoy your win, but don’t dwell on it. I recommend you focus your time and energy on Buford cause they’ll visit Columbus before Peach County does.
