Regions 5 and 6 will find out which is better
Here are some of the stories to watch this weekend in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs:
*Bragging rights: Regions 5 and 6 were the only ones to go 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs, and they will go head to head in the second round with region pride on the line. This week’s games include Allatoona (R5) at M.L. King (R6), Stephenson (R6) at East Paulding (R5) and North Paulding (R5) at Tucker (R6). North Paulding, a fifth-year program in Dallas, pulled off the biggest upset of the first round when it rolled past Region 8 champion Flowery Branch 63-43.
*Hitting the road: Stephenson cleared a big hurdle last week when it won a first-round playoff game for just the second time in its last six tries. Now the Jaguars face the bigger challenger of winning a playoff game on the road when they travel to the Boneyard to face East Paulding. Stephenson has played 26 playoff games in its history, and 22 of them have been at Hallford Stadium, where the Jaguars are 14-12 in the postseason. The Jaguars are 0-4 in playoff games outside of DeKalb County.
*Under the radar: One team that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in the postseason is Region 4 champion Whitewater, which hosts Glynn Academy in the second round. The Wildcats opened the season with a 41-3 loss to Class AAAAAA Coffee, but they have won 10 consecutive games since, including seven by 27 points or more. Whitewater beat Lee County 49-7 in the first-round, shutting down a Trojans team that averaged 45 points per game during the regular season and scored at least 31 in every game.
*Still rolling: Will Harris County’s magical ride continue? The Tigers started the season 0-4, but they responded with seven consecutive victories and have picked up the program’s first region title and first playoff victory along the way. Perhaps Harris County is peaking at the right time – its 17-point win over Northgate last week was the second-largest margin of victory during the winning streak. Harris County hosts Warner Robins in the second round.
*Looking ahead: Northside-Warner Robins and Tucker have been the top two programs in the second-largest classification in recent years, combining to win four of the past six state titles. Northside was the champion in 2006 and 2007, while Tucker won the title in 2008 and 2011. At least one of them won’t get a shot at it this year. A Tucker victory over North Paulding and a Northside win over Thomas County Central on Friday will bring the two powers together for a quarterfinal showdown in Warner Robins next week.

You guys can say what you want, but you don’t lead the state/nation in D1 signees that Stephenson has done for the past 3 years and either win or come in second in your region as Stephenson has done in it’s region, play up on the state’s highest classification and maintain playoff appearances and we move down and get’s no respect!!! billy bob……How is it that predominately African American teams with African American coaches all seem to be “undisciplined”……. Coach Stevenson’s Tucker squads of 07 ,08 and 11 were some of the best ive seen., and the worst of all were Robert Davis’s Westside Seminoles.

JAB- I think most honest folks respect the number of D1 signees SHS has every year…I think they also respect your regular season success. But you glossed right over the reason no one respects the Jags in the playoffs. “Maintaining playoff appearances” does not mean a lick if you’re not WINNING playoff appearances…and as noted in the article, SHS won Round 1 last week for only the 2nd time in the past 6 tries.
If you don’t understand that reasoning, there’s really nothing anyone can say to make you see.

Also, I would mention that region 6 was minutes away from SWEEPING region 7 and two very good teams could not get into the playoffs. With that being said, region 6 sends region 5 into full blown basketball season. MLK and Tucker move on, Stephenson will remove the monkey off its playoff back and put a “W” in its win column for road playoffs.

@Reeze – Excellent points made @ billy bob. Again, we hear from narrow minded and outdated posters, it’s a shame but they still live in the past. Also, I would add the 2010 Tucker team who lost 20-19 to Starr Mills in the semi-final round. In this classification, since the mid 2000’s, just as the article mention, if you want to be the State Champion, you MUST come thru both Tucker and NSWR. (Period) Both of these PROGRAMS average 14 games a year.
@bill bob – What happen to Westside in 2008, when the Tigers traveled to, at that time, #1 Westside? Let me refresh your memory – a 31-20 Tucker beat down of the Seminoles on their way to becoming the 2008 State Champs.

Not to get ahead of things, but the Stars maybe lining up again for ANOTHER Tiger/Eagle explosion. Round 2 appears that Tucker has a little easier road than NSWR. TCC well be formable opponent. I’m cheering for a Eagles victory, for the Nov 30th showdown at the famous MAC stadium … Tucker has pretty good results in middle GA. If you want to be the BEST then you must beat the BEST.

I think you Region 6 guys are taking Region 5 a little to lightly……EP is pretty good , they’ll hang 400 plus yards on the Jags Defense……North Paulding put up 63 on FB , The Branch yes maybe one of the worst defenses in AAAAA , but still 63….I don’t know their offense , If they can throw the ball it might get intresting for the Tigers………MLK walks over Toona….Still I think 2-1 ,Region 6.

JAB- you’re the one who brought up the phrase “maintaining playoff appearances.” Then you questioned why SHS doesn’t get respect. I told you my opinion of why you don’t get respect when it comes to playoffs: the Jags lost in round one 4 of the past 6 years. Simply making the playoffs every single season is not enough for folks to begin believing the Jags are the team to beat…”powerhouses” earn that name in the playoffs, not the regular season games and rankings.

NORTH’s issue is with their “D”…we went to their ALLATOONA / NORTH game and ALLATOONA put 56 points up against them, ROME scored 57 BUT they win with their OFFENSE…this team LOVES to get into a shoot-out! They put up over 40 pts in 3 games, 50+ in two games and then 63! last week in the PLAYOFF game…Go figure this team! EAST held them to their lowest points all year 17.
If TUCKER overlooks this team any at all or a break here or there and NORTH wins this game! I saw some of their players at the FALCONS game Sunday and they were FIRED UP!

I was surprised to see Maxwell had EP by 17 and the most likely semi as EP – Northside, followed by Kell – MLK on the other side. I mean we didn’t exactly dominate a 5-5 Clarke Central team.

@ What you guys got to realize that this is AAAAA the state’s second largest school, ask AJC and they will tell you that; the quality of ball teams are a lot less weaker in AAAAA than AAAAAA IN AAAAA you have Tucker, NSWR, Gainesville, Rome, TCC, Warner Robins, Clarke Central & SWD (THey all have won a state championship. In AAAAAA you have Grayson, Parkview, Marrietta, Brookwood, Valdosta, Lowndes, Camden County, Roswell, Pechtree Ridge, Chattaoochee, Colquit County. Enough said…

I must admit yes Stephenson hasn’t done much since the early 2000′’s & when we did have those great players on the field. I totally agree with you all. But this is a new alignment, new region, & new playoffs that Stephenson is in. Let’s see how this plays out this year & the next few years. I have a good feeling about this team & game this week. Don’t be surprised if EP is shout down. I am just saying it is braggin rights on the line for both regions 5 & 6.
@JAB keep up the great comments. I enjoy how the posters go back & fourth. After this week I believe it will be pretty quite in the blog room. I think this is the last week region 5 will be in the playoffs. Region 6 gets a clean sweep

The EP/Stephenson game is a tough one to call. The only way you can dominate the Jags is with a potent passing game. EP with try to ram it down the Jags D and that will keep them (Jags) in the game. Tucker tried it and lost. Miller Grove has a decent passing game and beat the Jags. Last I checked EP does not have a potent passing attack and that bodes well for the Jags. If EP can pass well they may be able to handle the Jags but if not, it will go down to the wire! Should be a good one though!

@ THE “CANNON RULES”!!, come on man’ I thought we was partially buds, for someone who didn’t come to the Stephenson/Pope game you sure did get alot of wrong info. I know Stephenson Band director and he is a total gentlemen, he makes sure that their band don’t play when the other teams has the ball; the real true reason is that Pope band didn’t even come on the field for half time, probably because of the Stephenson band pregame show on the field. After they saw that huge mega band spread out all over that field with their loud sounding classy band. I was sitting on Pope side and many of their fans was clapping after Stephenson performance and said that they are a classy band…

JAB, I’m a alumnist and a former Jag football player. I love your ethusiasm about my alma mater, but tone it down a little. All the D-1 talk means nothing until we show consistent presence in the playoffs. I was on one of the best Jag teams yet in 2002, and a D-1 signee, but even I and some of my teammates dont gloat that this much. Talk trash, but keep it reasonable. We appreciate your support, and I dont know if your a former player or not. Us former players are actually pretty humble. Lets stay humble also.

I’ll say this… as far as Stephenson vs EP, I wouldn’t expect EP to be able to run the ball on Stephenson like they did on Clarke Central. Even though, alot of the “big run plays” on Clarke Central were due to misreads and what not. EP is pretty good, but it wont be a blowout on either side. Stephenson just has to make sure they can put up points against the EP defense.

@jab…You really shouldn’t falsify the definitions of words. Your definition list is for a raid NOT a RAIDER, you just added an “er” to try to fool people. It didn’t work. The correct defininiton of a RAIDER is….. a soldier specially trained for close-range fighting. Check the Mirriam/Webster dictionary. I told this to toona fans before our game with them…..”our soldiers will be waiting to on the field for a little close range scurmish”. We will be adding some kitty cat bones to the pile of toona and gladiator bones that were once our opponents come this fri.. High5, you may want to look up East football and watch some film brother. Because the Raiders can sling the ball. They have one of the best qb’s in the country back there and he has cannon and is very accurate. If EP has to throw the ball to win they can sure do it. They will run the ball, they have two very good back in the back field who can get it done. I encourage you to go and watch some film, because EP is a pretty balanced football team, like NSWR. If the Raiders are able to run the ball effectively Friday night, watch out.

JAB, how man times did Stephenson get out of the 1st round while they were in 6A ball. Yea thats what I thought. You see, OMAC is trying to explain to you. That in order to consider your Stephenson team a powerhouse. They have got to start making some noise in the playoffs. Yes, maybe this year is a start. Oh and by the way, please don’t let that POPE score go to your head. Because I watched that film and Pope moved the ball against your Great defense fairly well, they just made some mistakes and had some penalties that shot themselves in the foot. In fact the score in the 4th qtr at one point was 17-11. Pope then fumbled the ensuing kickoff return which set up a short field for Stephenson to score a quick TD and then Pope turns around and throws an Interception on the following offensive possession which then sets up yet another quick Stephenson TD. Just some bad break for the Pope Greyhounds. Had those turnover wouldn’t of happened I believe Pope would of edged out the Jaguars. So please take not when I say this, Stephenson better bring it this Friday night, because EP is a world better than POPE and if the Jags slip up just once, they will get blown out of Dallas, Georgia.

@ COWBELLMAN, Stephenson made some of the same mistakes. Stephenson offense couldn’t be stopped by Pope, and since you watched the film you will see that after Stephenson scored a touchdown to make it 17 to 3 they were penalized at the kick off, then another another penalty half the distane of the goal, then Pope scored. Pope defense didn’t stop Stephenson and you will not stop them. If anything else I see a high scoring game with Stephenson edging you guys by a field goal because we have a very good field goal kicker…

There were some of the most uncalled for and incorrect calls I have seen in several seasons. Even a 5-5 Clarke Central was not exactly a team to be taken lightly, they have a history as a very good team through the years that can’t be overlooked. As far as Stephenson is concerned…..

Sounds like to me that both teams have good running backs. I don’t know to much about EP skilled postions or their defense. What I do know is they are undefeated and that is a sign of a good football team. As of right now both teams are 1-0 in the playoffs and whoever wins the game moves on. I know that Stephenson has played in a pretty good region all year long. I can say that because I seen all the teams they played this year. Maybe i am alittle bias but I can only comment on what I seen. If Stephenson wins, I don’t think to many people would consider it an upset because of all the press Stephenson has gotten over the past years, and most would say it won’t be because of coaching it would probably say because they had better athletes than EP. Which really i never understood that comment.
If EP wins then it would be considered an upset because of Stephenson past in getting so many D-1 athletes in school and people still remember those days instead of what is going on now and the AJC focus more in the Metro-Atlanta area when covering high school football.
Now onto my predictions of the game. Whoever has the ball last will win the game unless there is a sizable lead of 14 points or better. I thhink Stephenson is battle tested to win close games and have the defense to bend but don’t break attitude. EP from what i seen on youtube has good athletes as well. There QB is a runner along with their do it everything running back. If you can control those two good football players Stephenson has a chance in sneaking into the Boneyard and getting a win. If EP gets in going early it could be a long nite for the Jags.

The one thing I will not miss is Cannon and EP’S fans. I think the most obnoxious in HS football. No more tick, boom and dome. No more stories of how scary it is to play in the boneyard. You are definitely the biggest bad luck charm the school has. if not for all the smack you talk, they might win one of these years. same crap every year and then after a lost you get so humble about how a great season and wait to next year, you have been singing that song for a few years now. as far as all the smack from the jag fans, you deserve it, you baited them well, even writing a little story about them and waking up. It was funny but you did it again talked so much smck you willed them into losing just so you would shut .. Next year tone it down a bit, put away the tick boom road to dome crapit does not work! Well I can say one thing Gainesville has the best QB out there he single handed wiped our butts.congrats to the Red Elephants.on the other hand I’d like to thank our coach for believing he played the best QB guess it bit you in the butt seems your philosophy has come back to haunt you each year seems you set your self and your team for failure my advice for any athlete that’s thinking of moving to KELL high school is don’t he’s a bully coach and hold grudge’s and hypocrite. And if you have enough $$$$$ he put you on the field even if you are just 40 day incarcerated fresh out jail for the second time!!! so good luck to all teams left.

Congratulations to North Paulding on a good game. I believe, once Tucker adjusted to NP’s offensive tempo and begin to bring a bit more pressure, they were able to gain control the game with it’s running game. I also thought Tucker’s speed played a role. Hope your QB is OK . . . he’s a heck of a player.
