Regions 5 and 6 will find out which is better
Here are some of the stories to watch this weekend in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs:
*Bragging rights: Regions 5 and 6 were the only ones to go 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs, and they will go head to head in the second round with region pride on the line. This week’s games include Allatoona (R5) at M.L. King (R6), Stephenson (R6) at East Paulding (R5) and North Paulding (R5) at Tucker (R6). North Paulding, a fifth-year program in Dallas, pulled off the biggest upset of the first round when it rolled past Region 8 champion Flowery Branch 63-43.
*Hitting the road: Stephenson cleared a big hurdle last week when it won a first-round playoff game for just the second time in its last six tries. Now the Jaguars face the bigger challenger of winning a playoff game on the road when they travel to the Boneyard to face East Paulding. Stephenson has played 26 playoff games in its history, and 22 of them have been at Hallford Stadium, where the Jaguars are 14-12 in the postseason. The Jaguars are 0-4 in playoff games outside of DeKalb County.
*Under the radar: One team that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in the postseason is Region 4 champion Whitewater, which hosts Glynn Academy in the second round. The Wildcats opened the season with a 41-3 loss to Class AAAAAA Coffee, but they have won 10 consecutive games since, including seven by 27 points or more. Whitewater beat Lee County 49-7 in the first-round, shutting down a Trojans team that averaged 45 points per game during the regular season and scored at least 31 in every game.
*Still rolling: Will Harris County’s magical ride continue? The Tigers started the season 0-4, but they responded with seven consecutive victories and have picked up the program’s first region title and first playoff victory along the way. Perhaps Harris County is peaking at the right time – its 17-point win over Northgate last week was the second-largest margin of victory during the winning streak. Harris County hosts Warner Robins in the second round.
*Looking ahead: Northside-Warner Robins and Tucker have been the top two programs in the second-largest classification in recent years, combining to win four of the past six state titles. Northside was the champion in 2006 and 2007, while Tucker won the title in 2008 and 2011. At least one of them won’t get a shot at it this year. A Tucker victory over North Paulding and a Northside win over Thomas County Central on Friday will bring the two powers together for a quarterfinal showdown in Warner Robins next week.

@ THE “CANNON RULES”!!, come on man’ I thought we was partially buds, for someone who didn’t come to the Stephenson/Pope game you sure did get alot of wrong info. I know Stephenson Band director and he is a total gentlemen, he makes sure that their band don’t play when the other teams has the ball; the real true reason is that Pope band didn’t even come on the field for half time, probably because of the Stephenson band pregame show on the field. After they saw that huge mega band spread out all over that field with their loud sounding classy band. I was sitting on Pope side and many of their fans was clapping after Stephenson performance and said that they are a classy band…

JAB, I’m a alumnist and a former Jag football player. I love your ethusiasm about my alma mater, but tone it down a little. All the D-1 talk means nothing until we show consistent presence in the playoffs. I was on one of the best Jag teams yet in 2002, and a D-1 signee, but even I and some of my teammates dont gloat that this much. Talk trash, but keep it reasonable. We appreciate your support, and I dont know if your a former player or not. Us former players are actually pretty humble. Lets stay humble also.

I’ll say this… as far as Stephenson vs EP, I wouldn’t expect EP to be able to run the ball on Stephenson like they did on Clarke Central. Even though, alot of the “big run plays” on Clarke Central were due to misreads and what not. EP is pretty good, but it wont be a blowout on either side. Stephenson just has to make sure they can put up points against the EP defense.

@jab…You really shouldn’t falsify the definitions of words. Your definition list is for a raid NOT a RAIDER, you just added an “er” to try to fool people. It didn’t work. The correct defininiton of a RAIDER is….. a soldier specially trained for close-range fighting. Check the Mirriam/Webster dictionary. I told this to toona fans before our game with them…..”our soldiers will be waiting to on the field for a little close range scurmish”. We will be adding some kitty cat bones to the pile of toona and gladiator bones that were once our opponents come this fri.. Now go try to fool some other fans on the board cause E.P. fans aren’t easy to fool.

High5, you may want to look up East football and watch some film brother. Because the Raiders can sling the ball. They have one of the best qb’s in the country back there and he has cannon and is very accurate. If EP has to throw the ball to win they can sure do it. They will run the ball, they have two very good back in the back field who can get it done. I encourage you to go and watch some film, because EP is a pretty balanced football team, like NSWR. If the Raiders are able to run the ball effectively Friday night, watch out.

JAB, how man times did Stephenson get out of the 1st round while they were in 6A ball. Yea thats what I thought. You see, OMAC is trying to explain to you. That in order to consider your Stephenson team a powerhouse. They have got to start making some noise in the playoffs. Yes, maybe this year is a start. Oh and by the way, please don’t let that POPE score go to your head. Because I watched that film and Pope moved the ball against your Great defense fairly well, they just made some mistakes and had some penalties that shot themselves in the foot. In fact the score in the 4th qtr at one point was 17-11. Pope then fumbled the ensuing kickoff return which set up a short field for Stephenson to score a quick TD and then Pope turns around and throws an Interception on the following offensive possession which then sets up yet another quick Stephenson TD. Just some bad break for the Pope Greyhounds. Had those turnover wouldn’t of happened I believe Pope would of edged out the Jaguars. So please take not when I say this, Stephenson better bring it this Friday night, because EP is a world better than POPE and if the Jags slip up just once, they will get blown out of Dallas, Georgia.

@ COWBELLMAN, Stephenson made some of the same mistakes. Stephenson offense couldn’t be stopped by Pope, and since you watched the film you will see that after Stephenson scored a touchdown to make it 17 to 3 they were penalized at the kick off, then another another penalty half the distane of the goal, then Pope scored. Pope defense didn’t stop Stephenson and you will not stop them. If anything else I see a high scoring game with Stephenson edging you guys by a field goal because we have a very good field goal kicker…

COWBELLMAN-umm if i am correct its was 21-16 middle of the 3rd aginst 5-5 team rite…the game was close all the way til the end of the thrird where you pull away aginst 5-5 team who wasn’t that good…i mean if they had somewhat of QB they would been moving the ball all nite on you guys..you guys are going to wake friday nite

Hey guy, calm down! LOL! Don’t take my Band post / question wrong…
I WAS NOT at the game as I earlier posted BUT several folks mentioned this about the band and questioned why they didn’t allow POPE to play also. I think EVERYONE is aware how good the STEPHENSON band is (and how large) KUDO’s to them! My comment was IN NO WAY derogatory towards their performance (I am looking forward to seeing them) I only stated that they should have timed their performance so as to also allow the POPE band, which had traveled to the game also, to play!

I was at the Stephenson/Pope game and JAB is correct. Pope never lined up to take the field for the halftime show, not sure why, but they didn’t attempt to perform. Now back to posting about my team.

@stephensonBLACKOPP Yes it was close but it shouldn’t have been. You can thank the Etowah Valley refs for that. Even the guys at AJC eluded to that fact. There were some of the most uncalled for and incorrect calls I have seen in several seasons. Even a 5-5 Clarke Central was not exactly a team to be taken lightly, they have a history as a very good team through the years that can’t be overlooked. As far as Stephenson is concerned…..

Even our QB will lower a shoulder on your defensive players, especially when throwing blocks against your D-Linemen to spring a running back.
