Class AAAA: Big second-round matchup between Carrollton, Marist

Games to watch in Class AAAA this week:

No. 10 Carrollton (8-3) at No. 2 Marist (10-1): Carrollton’s Rayvan Teague and Marist’s Alan Chadwick have 516 coaching wins between them. Carrollton has scored 40 points or more eight times in 11 games, keyed by the running of Trey Chivers (790 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Jarvis Terrell (695 yards, 8 touchdowns). Marist’s Myles Willis has rushed for 831 yards and passed for 707, accounting for a combined 19 touchdowns.

Grady (9-2) at Monroe Area (10-1): This one carries multiple story lines. After missing multiple games with an ankle injury, Monroe Area quarterback Stanton Truitt returned to the lineup last week and scored the winning touchdown against Shaw. Monroe Area coach Matt Fligg has family ties to the Grey Knights’ program. His father, the late Jack Fligg, was head coach at Grady from 1958-1963 before moving to the college ranks.

Mary Persons (9-2) at No. 7 Cairo (9-2): Fresh off coach Tom Fallaw’s 100th career win, the Syrupmakers meet Mary Persons in a battle of dueling Davises. P.J. Davis, who scored a pair of touchdowns in Cairo’s first win over Riverdale, spearheads the Syrupmaker offense, while Nick Davis, who rushed for 163 yards in a blowout of Statesboro last week, leads Mary Persons.

Monroe (8-3) at No. 3 Burke County (10-1): The best matchup of quarterbacks in the second round features Burke’s do-it-all Donquell “Gator” Green against Monroe’s Charles Stafford, who has thrown for nearly 2,700 yards and 22 touchdowns. Green and the Bears have won 10 straight and have scored at least 33 points in all 10 of those games.

South Effingham (7-4) at Westover (8-3): Westover and running back Shannon Saunders (more than 200 yards in the first round) get an unexpected home game against South Effingham and running backs Josh Mercer (two touchdown runs last week) and Cordaro Leverette.

Shaw was okay. Our region consisted of # 1Sandy Creek, Langrange and Shaw. We CARROLLTON destroyed lagrange and shaw. We also played #1 Calhoun. Who barely squeaked by on a onside kick and fumbled kickoff. The winner of the Marist vs Carrollton game will be in the Dome to play SANDY CREEK or BURKE COUNTY. The other brackets are a waste of time. CARROLLTON 28 MARIST 14. To much speed for carrollton. Runnin backs Shivers and terrell run 4.4’s. both of our cornerbacks run 4.4’s. And there all juniors. 27 track&field championships. Speed!!!! GEORGIA DOME HERE WE COME!!!!

@trojan power — they all run 4.4s? Well then, who is going to catch our QB — he runs a 4.3?! Anyway, this ain’t about track & field — the guys won’t be running around an oval with a baton. Marist has plenty of football speed. Both teams will be playing grown man football.

I had high hopes for region 4 but after that first round I don’t know if Stockbridge was really good or just the best of a bad bunch. Prior to the first round I had Stockbridge going to the dome but now I guessing Ridgeland or Marist

@wareagle- I agree it will be grown man football. Marist has a good football team. But beware of the mighty trojans. Dont let that 8-3 record fool u. Sandycreek was hand wrapped a victory. 2 bad punt snaps and a dropped pick 6. Changed the momentem. Ghsa Really miessed on these brackets. How do u have the 4 best teams in the state. In the same brackets. Sorry but the DOME IS GONE BE OUR HOME THIS YEAR!!! GO MIGHTY TROJANS!!! Dont be intimidated. Cause we bring the whole city!!! We travel well.

It is a good thing that THE CAIRO SYRUPMAKERS were elimiated in the 1st round this year or I would have them going to the DOME. I just sad to have to watch either Carrollton, Marist, or Ridgeland take our shot at the DOME. Out side of (BURK) the only team that got a chance to peek at the DOME last season. I think we are 16 wins agains 4 losses in the last 6 playoff seasons (this one included). That means we did not lose in the first round. I have a feeling there will be some Pleasant surprizes at the end of this playoff season.

I was born in Monroe and own rental property there; however, my children are graduates of the Grey Knights of Grady High School and I love and support Coach Ronnie Millen’s program! With that said, Go Grey Knights!!!

The winner of Sandy Creek/Burke will face the winner of Marist/Carrollton. I personally think we will see Sandy Creek vs. Carrollton II in the Dome.

I think it will take longer to decide the finalist in the right side bracket than the left.Looks like round 3 will decide the left side barring any major upsets.Good luck and enjoy the games-just remember all but 1 team will lose(in each class)by the end of the playoffs.Appreciate your team for what they accomplished whether they win it all or not.

War Eagle-does the Marist QB really run a 4.3 forty?Thats about the same as Reggie Brown of Carrollton; Georgia and the Phil. Eagles.I’m not doubting it-just saying that a 4.3 is a rare feat.I think you may have been toying with another blogger’s bragging.

Just a Fan…..While I’m not a Marist fan, I saw first hand how fast their QB was on the field. The QB out ran Carver’s entire secondary on one scoring TD and they each had 10 to 15 yard angles on him. However, that’s why we play the game because it comes down to matchups and defensive stops! I’ve seen some exceptionally fast guys on the football field over the years and I rate this QB as one of them. He’s probably a legitimate 4.3/4.4 runner with ease! But we all know that he will not be playing QB at the next level. More like tailback or slot receiver!

Trojan 94-True-Teague is very conservative but sometimes the strength of the other team can make a coaching staff look bad;its hard to tell the difference sometimes.I think this game has been overhyped-you have a top 3 team(Marist) against a team having an off year that just re-entered the rankings at #10.It must be the tradition of the 2 teams that has attracted so much attention.A win for Carrollton would be an upset but I will be there cheering for the Trojans.

Well one thing I can say. If Burke Co don’t win it all this year, they will be there next year. You can do a lot with only three seniors on your team.

Finally the game we’ve been waiting for.. Burke Co. vs. Skanky Creek.. I think Sandy Creek’s weak schedule will show next Fri. night. Burke Co. 35-Sandy Creek 20.. It could be a lot worse if the game is played in the bear den.. Welcome to real football SKANKY CREEK!!!!!!!

I’m not fixing to get on here and say those Bears are gonna beat the Creek, but it will be one hell of a game. The penalties the Bears got in the first half of the Monroe game could’ve cost them the game if they were playing the Creek, the Trojans, or Marist. Luckily, they wasn’t. But I do have a question, where in the world is “Trojan94″ and “Trojan Power”??? I guess we won’t be hearing from them no more this season. Whew!!!!

I have news for everyone, Stockbridge is loaded. A very good and fast team…The defense plays lights out and for anyone keeping up with High School Football knows that this team is averaging on the Defensive side of the ball 12 points a game…Offense seems to be able to score at will to this point. Marist vs Stockbridge should be one great game.

Last night’s Marist-Carrollton game was agonizingly painful for Marist fans like me. We came away with a quintuple-overtime victory but a lot of questions about mistakes and sloppy play. Six or seven false start penalties, two interceptions, a dropped pitch on the option play, and a fumble by our punter who could not catch the long snap. Even worse, a mixed extra point, which would have turned the score at the end of regulation from 13-13 to 14-13. Coach Chadwick was breathing fire and smoke–I could see that from way up in the stands, and he’ll be spending time this week trying to make sure they play an efficient, error-free game against Stockbridge next week. Having said all that, I salute the superb Marist defense for stopping drive after drive and for working out how to neutralize a Carrollton passing game that looked brilliant in the first half. Most of all, hats off to Gray King for blocking what would have been the winning field goal for Carrollton as time expired. Coach Chadwick called three consecutive time outs to ice not just the kicker but the whole line, the snapper, and the holder. It worked! We were all expecting the worst but then got a breath of new life. After that kind of stress, the five overtimes seemed almost emotionally endurable!

Congratulations to the Grady Knights on a GREAT season!

Knights, don’t be disappointed by last nights “L”. Anyone who attended the game knows that you won the game and had we played the same game on our home field with our refs, you would have defeated them 28-14 with no OT. The truth is the truth! Film doesn’t lie Monroe Area. You know the Knights were cheated out of the win. Remember…CHEATERS NEVER WIN!!! A “W” on paper with a “L” in your heart is not worth the victory.
