Second-round playoff preview: Class AAAAA

Thomas County Central at Northside

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, McConnell-Talbert Stadium, Warner Robins

Records, rankings: Thomas County Central is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAAA and unranked; Northside of Warner Robins is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 2-AAAAA and ranked No. 1.

Last meeting: Northside won 47-7 in the 2011 regular season.

Three things to know:1. Northside QB Glenn Smith rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown and threw two TD passes in the 41-13 victory over Effingham County last week. The score was 34-0 at halftime. The win improved Northside’s record to 34-2 under third-year coach Kevin Kinsler. 2. Thomas Central has won its first-round games the past two seasons in double overtime. In 2011, Central beat undefeated and third-ranked Statesboro 31-28. Last week, it was a 27-24 victory over Creekside. QB Adam Choice rushed for 168 yards and scored the winning touchdown, and Central survived three lost fumbles, one that Creekview returned 88 yards for a tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. 3. Northside has never lost to Thomas Central. Though they are about 150 miles apart, they were members of Region 1-AAAAA the past two seasons, and Northside won their games 47-7 and 34-14. They met in the 2005 second round, and Northside won 14-7.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Northside by 16

Winner plays: North Paulding/Tucker winner

North Paulding at Tucker

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Adams Stadium, Atlanta

Records, rankings: North Paulding is 8-3, the No. 4 seed from Region 5-AAAAA and unranked; Tucker is 9-2, the No. 3 seed from 6-AAAAA and ranked No. 5.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. North Paulding was one of four No. 4 seeds to win last week. They were 4-36. North Paulding beat Flowery Branch 63-43. QB Chase Noonan was 20-of-27 passing for 293 yards and five TD passes as North took a 42-7 halftime lead and won its first playoff game. The 106 points are tied for ninth-most ever by both teams in a GHSA playoff game. 2. Tucker beat Creekview 42-25 in the first round after taking a 35-3 lead in the third quarter. Tucker is a No. 3 seed but gets an unexpected home game this week because of North Paulding’s upset of No. 1 seed Flowery Branch. The game will be at Adams Stadium, where Tucker has won 10 consecutive playoff games and is 17-2 in the playoffs since 2000. 3. Both teams have first-year coaches. Tucker’s Bryan Lamar took over for Franklin Stephens, who won state titles at Tucker in 2008 and 2011 before moving to Lamar County. North Paulding’s Scott Jones took over for Heath Webb, who started the program in 2008. Jones started Kennesaw Mountain’s program in 2000 and never won a playoff game in his 10 seasons, but he got one in his first shot at North.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Tucker by 6

Winner plays: Thomas County Central/Northside winner

Union Grove at Ware County

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Waycross

Records, rankings: Union Grove is 10-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AAAAA and unranked; Ware County is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from 3-AAAAA and ranked No. 6.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Union Grove RB Derrick Craine rushed for 211 yards and his team’s three touchdowns on 37 carries in a 21-14 victory over Bainbridge last week. Craine unofficially has 2,001 rushing yards on the season. He has gone over 200 yards in four of the past five games. Union Grove, a McDonough school that opened in 2000, is 10-1 for the first time. 2. Ware County’s 27-7 victory over Lakeside of Evans extended some winning steaks. Ware has won 10 consecutive games overall since a 21-14 loss to Coffee and won six straight first-round playoff games. No other AAAAA school has a longer streak of making the sweet 16. 3. Ware County is 11-3 at home in the playoffs over the past 10 seasons. Ware has won four straight in the playoffs at home, the most recent loss to Northside of Warner Robins in the 2007 Class AAAAA championship game.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Ware County by 13

Winner plays: Stephenson/East Paulding winner

Stephenson at East Paulding

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Raider Stadium/The Boneyard, Dallas

Records, rankings: Stephenson is 8-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAAA and ranked No. 9; East Paulding is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 5-AAAAA and ranked No. 3.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Stephenson beat Pope 31-11 in the first round in a game that was 17-11 in the fourth quarter before Stephenson cashed a fumbled kickoff and intercepted pass into two quick touchdowns. RB Evan Jones rushed for 114 yards and scored two touchdowns. 2. East Paulding beat Clarke Central 31-23 last week and allowed a touchdown with 48 seconds left to make it close. East has two outstanding running backs. RB Kamani Thomas has rushed for 1,549 yards on the season, but Kyler Neal ran for 156 yards against Clarke, his sixth game over 100. 3. Stephenson has never won a road game in the playoffs. All 14 of Stephenson’s playoff victories have come at DeKalb County’s Hallford Stadium. East Paulding is 6-1 in the playoffs at its home field, the Boneyard. The only loss came last season against Warner Robins in the quarterfinals.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: East Paulding by 17

Winner plays: Union Grove/Ware County winner

Warner Robins at Harris County

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tiger Stadium, Hamilton

Records, rankings: Warner Robins is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AAAAA and ranked No. 7; Harris County is 7-4, the No. 1 seed from 1-AAAAA and unranked.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Harris County won its first playoff game in history last week in the 31-14 victory over Northgate. That came a week after Harris upset Thomas County Central and won its first region title. Esias Chapman rushed for 217 yards and four touchdowns. 2. Warner Robins beat Richmond Hill 17-15 last week on Matt Monday’s 32-yard field goal with 25 seconds left. RB Danny Hite rushed for 165 yards, and the Demons overcame two Richmond Hill backs who went over 100 yards rushing in Dominique Allen (185) and Davis Katzman (111). 3. The playoff histories of these schools couldn’t be more opposite. Harris County is 1-6 in the playoffs and putting on its third home playoff game in history this week. Warner Robins is 53-30 with four state championships, the most recent in 2004.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Warner Robins by 10

Winner plays: Gainesville/Kell winner

Gainesville at Kell

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, C.J. Kell Stadium, Marietta

Records, rankings: Gainesville is 8-3, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAAA and unranked; Kell is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from 7-AAAAA and ranked No. 4.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Gainesville broke its first two-game losing streak in five years with a 41-14 victory over Rome last week. QB Deshaun Watson, who is committed to Clemson, was 25-of-30 passing for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Watson has more than 2,600 yards passing on the season. 2. Matthew McGuigan threw a 32-yard TD pass to Julian Burris with 33 seconds left to give Kell a 19-14 victory over Southwest DeKalb in the first round. Burris was playing his first game since knee surgery. Kell trailed 14-12 when it started the winning drive from its 22-yard line with 3:05 left. 3. Gainesville has lost 12 of its last 13 road games in the playoffs dating to 1987. Gainesville is 17-4 at home during that time, all in the past 11 seasons under coach Brent Miller. Gainesville’s last road playoff win came against Cedar Grove in 2004 at Panthersville Stadium, a shared field among DeKalb County schools. Gainesville’s last playoff win on an opponent’s campus stadium came in 1986 against Stephens County.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Kell by 4

Winner plays: Warner Robins/Harris County winner

Glynn Academy at Whitewater

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Wildcat Stadium, Fayetteville

Records, rankings: Glynn Academy is 8-3, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAAAA and unranked; Whitewater is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from 4-AAAAA and unranked.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Glynn Academy got its second playoff victory in 25 years last week, beating Jones County 26-14. The other win came in 2010 against Lovejoy. RB Jonathan Alford rushed for 164 yards and scored all three of Glynn’s touchdowns. Jones County RB Undre Williams did not play because of a knee injury and finished the season with 1,863 yards rushing. 2. Whitewater got its first 10-win season in history (opened in 2004) in the 49-7 victory over Lee County. Whitewater scored its seven touchdowns in the first half. RB Kendall Conley had three of them. 3. Glynn Academy is trying to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1972. Whitewater has never made the quarterfinals, falling a game short in 2007 and 2010.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Whitewater by 7

Winner plays: Allatoona/M.L. King winner

Allatoona at M.L. King

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Hallford Stadium, Clarkston

Records, rankings: Allatoona is 10-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAAAA and ranked No. 10; M.L. King is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 6-AAAAA and ranked No. 2.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. M.L. King QB Roland Rivers, subbing for the injured Monquavious Johnson, passed for 338 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-14 victory over Sequoyah last week. Rivers also scored a touchdown. WR Demarquis Polite-Bray had six catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns. 2. Allatoona won 24-21 in the first round after Heritage of Conyers missed a 42-yard field goal in the final minute. Allatoona trailed 14-0 in the first quarter after giving up an interception-return TD, but QB Jeremy Uzee came back to throw a TD pass and score a touchdown. 3. Allatoona made the quarterfinals in AAA last season. M.L. King made the quarterfinals in AAAAA (the highest classification). Each wound up in what is now the second-highest classification, AAAAA, after reclassification. Allatoona is actually a significantly larger school based on the GHSA’s enrollment numbers in grades 10-12 used to classify the schools. Allatoona’s figure was 1,426, tied with North Paulding for largest in AAAAA. M.L. King ranked 50th with 1,194.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: M.L. King by 8

Winner plays: Glynn Academy/Whitewater winner

LOL, High5 oh little do you know about the East Passing game. #15 can stand back there for east and sling it with the best of them in the country. Stephenson will probably see a lot of screens and slants all night long. Please do not under estimate the Raider running game. They have a FB and RB who can take it the distance from anywhere on the field. Yes Stephenson is a very good football team, but so is East. The Raiders can and will throw the ball if they have to on the Jaguars defense, I don’t care how good that Safety is for Stephenson. The Raiders, are totally different from last year. Their Oline is bigger and very aggressive just as their Dline is. Stephenson will find out what Mays and SWD found out when they made their trips to the Boneyard. Its just a different atmosphere than what they are use too and the Raiders will come out and hit the Jags in the mouth all night long.

Again we win 10 games for the 15th year again we win our region, again we win our city. county, and finally our state. Tucker also is not the same team as last year, thy did not win region, city, and they are worse than last year.Hope u make it past N paulding, but don”t sleep on them either!

That country football that East Paulding plays will not work against a battle tested Stephenson team on Friday. East Paulding has played no one this year and struggled against some non playoff teams out of their region. Just because your undefeated doesn’t mean your a great or even really good team. If any of the top four teams out of Region 6-AAAAA [ML King, Stephenson, Tucker, SW Dekalb} played that schedule they would be 11-0 as well. You have to look at the whole schedule and who teams actually played and or beat. Stephenson 21 East Paulding 14.

High5, yes sir thats what Im saying. Ep runs the right at you out of the I formation. They dont need anoffense that relys on a lot of misdirection plays from a wing t offense. Trust me, Kimani Thomas and Kyler Neal are as good and probably better than anything that Tucker has running the ball. Just look those boys up plenty of film on them.

HIGH5. You better start watching some film on East. Because when they are running and throwing the ball all over Stephenson I dont want it to be a shock to you. Mitchell Webb has thrown for atleast 1300 yards this year probably more. I do believe he has only thrown 1 maybe 2 interceptions all year long. Again, find some film and watch it please!!!!!

@Gamer, this is the math I used…. #25 is a junior and our current fullback who has been starting for two years, #5 is a junior who is a wing back and has been starting at either WR or WB for the last two years, #28 is a junior who is a wingback and started early in the season last year but was out for the NSWR game with a season ending injury but he’s back as well, #7 is a WB who has started all year but he will be our QB next year so that’s how I explain a full assortment of offensive backs coming back next year. Oh by the way, #40 is a sophmore and he is a beast playing backup fullback. So we are loaded.

@High 5, You are exactly right on your point. That is exactly how I saw it as well. However, you might want to get your pass defense tighter because East Paulding can pass as well. They will not dominate you but if you slip in the secondary it could make their running game more potent!

I’m really excited that the entire high school football community is getting a chance to see what region 6 5A football is all about. We have played such a competitive schedule this year that you can’t just assume that a teams record from this region is defacto. The records are scewd because of the competitive matchups every week. Our stats won’t look dominating either because we are playing playoff footback 6 out of 10 weeks. Soon you all will know that this is the real SEC football conference!!!!

@Cowbellman, Okay I was content at letting you talk your talk but you have gone too far. You have lost your mind! Tucker has a STABLE of backs like your Kimani Thomas, the only difference is that we share the rock over here so no one back will stand out all the time. We have backs taking it 90 yards at a time to the house but that may be on 9 carries. IF you give them 20 it would be over. We run a system and that’s why we win championships and not just regions.

Let me explain something to you people over at East P. I understand your exuberence over the success that you have had in the past few seasons and I wont knock that, but your region is so weak that you should temper your enthusiasm. Enjoy the blog but you are going to have your hands full with Stephenson. You have not faced a tougher opponent with the speed, size, and athleticism that they have. I caution you to not try to match them mono emono. You may out scheme them but you will not line up accross from them and intimidate them. You are in for a long night.

@TuckerDad, from what I have seen for the smallish Jags, our guys can not only match man for man, our ball boys are even bigger, strong and faster then theirs. You Reg 6 folks have no ideal how good we are. Reg 5 will rep, in possibly sweep 6. I just don`t see anything Stephenson has talent wise, they seem average at best, we are so much better at every position. Do you know our guys warm up by catching balls shot out of the Cannon, that`s just to get game ready at practice. Fire comes out of Mitch. W. mouth when he calls the plays, Lightining strike the ground when Thomas or Neal hits the hole. So I know your Reg 6 mates are intimidated, and they should be. Hell I`m scare for them.

Just win Baby.

@The One
“Country Football”. That is simply any ignorant statement. Have you bothered to come watch a Reg5 game first hand?…. If not then do do before you try and talk about what ‘type’ if football is played here

@TuckerDad
You obviously have not seen East play first hand either. The system Tucker runs, the wingT requires a stable of backs with similar qualities Mostly they are your small type. 5-8, 5-9, 160-175 type. Able to get to and turn the corner quickly. The full back us a bit bigger but not much. Because you have a 95 % tuning team you have to have that stable of 5-6 guys that run in and out to keep them fresh. At East we run the I and with that we have the TB who in our case goes 5-10, 190, and the FB who is 6′0, 205. The FB plays the TB position on ocassion because of his exceptional speed. He is also a gifted receiver. I will assure you the East running backs ‘this’ year are far more talented then your stable. Both operate within the system provided but talent wise …… Like I said … You obviously have not seen them.

Also interns of line play …… Ah forget it, not worth the typing strokes.

@5AReg6Fan
I love ya, but you’ve gotten way to close to the cool aid that your region breathren are serving. Keep with your support of Tucker. Just be happy to be facing NORTH and not EAST Paulding this week. Much much different teams as many have learned.

@RealisticFan, Thanks for the link. He’s a good looking kid. Runs hard, has good technique on defense and tackles through the runner. I like that! However, I still contend that your region is weak and that will make any average player look great! Not saying that E. Paulding is not a good team, but you always seem to do pretty well until the higher rounds. Which is where you find most of the competition at. Unfortunately for you this year region 6 was stacked with good teams and we are sending some great teams into the 2nd round. You will be lucky to beat Stephenson. The only thing holding me back from being 100 percent sure that they are going to beat you is their coaching.

No problem not being. 100% sure I AM 100% sure and that EAST wins.

Also be careful when you criticize East for what they do in the higher rounds(qtr finals or better 5 of the past 6 years). They have played 5 more games(60-15) then Stephenson(57-13) in that same span meaning they have at least played well enough to average getting 1 round further each year. The quality of our region and opp could be seen as superior over that same span using your own logic. Coincidently MLK has played 2 less (60-13), and Tucker 4 more (70-9).

Oh my, I remember with Mizzu said UGA’s style of football was “old man” football. Yea that didn’t turn out to good for them. Miller Grove lit you guys up by throwing the ball, well guess what. East can sling it and run it. Your 8-10 Div 1 guys are gonna find out what big time football is all about tonight at the Boneyard. Yea, you beat Tucker and shut their running game down. Well guess what, thats why you beat them because thats all they can do is run the ball out of the wing t. The Jags defense is gonna be reeling tonight folks. If the Jags can’t find a way to run the ball tonight, they are in for it big time. I’ve said it all year long, the key to having success against this Raider defense is having success running the ball so it will allow for some passes down field. South Paulding, and Hiram, were able to have some success. But don’t come in expecting that you can either win by just slinging the ball or running the ball cause its gonna gonna happen. Ask North Paulding, Rome, and Toona how that goes for ya. All 3 were blown out because they couldn’t maintain a balance on offense. Safe travels for all you Stephenson fans, I’m looking forward to hearing the band tonight as well.

WOW!!! It is amazing how everyone counts out the RAIDERS!!! I do feel the game will be closer than 3 scores, but the Raiders will prevail… I am impressed with the new staff and the game plans they come up with each week… @High5 the passing game is pretty good when needed…But why pass if you dont have to!!! Good luck to all still playing…be injury free…and safe in your travels!!! Congrats to NP as well!!! lets see if the county can put 2 feathers in the cap and move on to round 3!!! GO RAIDERS!!! Wait for it…Wait for it…I will let @CANNON handle it for ya!!!
