Higher seeds go 14-2, but Flowery Branch and Creekview knocked out (updated)
The first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs went according to form, for the most part, as the higher-seeded teams went 14-2. Here’s a look at the biggest surprise and the other games of note:
*The upset: North Paulding made a big splash in its playoff debut, beating top-seeded and eighth-ranked Flowery Branch 63-43 in a game in which the teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense. North Paulding, which led 42-7 at halftime, got five touchdown passes and a TD run from quarterback Chase Newnan, according to the Gainesville Times. Flowery Branch was the Region 8 champion and earned a No. 1 seed for the first time in the program’s history but was the only No. 1 to lose its opener.
*The upset? Not really: Fifth-ranked Tucker was the only No. 3 seed to win on Friday when it beat Creekview 42-25, but it was hardly unexpected. In fact, it’s rarely an upset when the Tigers win a playoff game – they are 18-3 in the postseason with two state championships since 2007. Nonetheless, it was a great season for Creekview, which matched the school record for victories with nine in Al Morrell’s final season as the Grizzlies’ coach. He announced his retirement earlier this season.
*Rating the regions: If playoff success is the ultimate measuring stick of a region’s strength, then Regions 5 and 6 came out on top as the only ones to go 3-1. Region 5 got victories from top-seeded East Paulding, No. 2 Allatoona and No. 4 North Paulding. Third seed Rome lost to Gainesville 41-14. Region 6 got victories from M.L. King and Tucker on Friday, and Stephenson defeated Pope 31-11 on Saturday. Region 6 came close to making it 4-0, but fourth-seeded Southwest DeKalb gave up a late score in a 19-14 loss to Kell.
*Still perfect: Three Class AAAAA teams (East Paulding, Northside-Warner Robins and M.L. King) were 10-0 during the regular season, and all three moved on to the second round. East Paulding is trying to reach 12-0 for the first time since 2007, when it lost to Thomas County Central in the AAAA quarterfinals. Northside won its first 13 games last season before losing to Tucker in the AAAA semifinals, and M.L. King was 12-0 in 2011 when it lost to Lassiter in the AAAAA quarterfinals.
*Looking ahead: There will be two second-round games that match teams ranked in the top 10, and both involve Regions 5 and 6. Second-ranked M.L. King will host No. 10 Allatoona, and No. 3 East Paulding will host No. 8 Stephenson. Here are the second-round games:

For us to be going without our star QB and RBs we played alright last night.. GAME shudda been 34-7
but a simple mishap caused a SEQUOYAH TD!! My hats off to SEQUOYAH for making it too the play-offs.. Now yes region 5 has a lil advantage right now because all four teams battled last night out of that region and they came up (3-1) but you have to realize STEPHENSON did not play last night BUT will “W” tonight and you can take that to the bank and deposit that..JAGS been playin behind schedule all yr but clearly is not one to OVERLOOK as their record stands 7-2 in which they loss to a really guud undefeated team(THATS US) and they understimated MG’S ability to score!
POINT, BLANK, PERIOD dont underestimate that JAGS, just like KING they have the power to demolish a championship team…
@ KELL fans – I warned yall not to sleep on SWD!! Yall barely escaped with yall lives but congrats is in order for your win last night..Yall played well..please enjoy it while you can tho…… HEADS UP that was just our 4th RANKED 6-5A team givin you all the hell in your house!! Chip – you are correct…the RAIDERS took care of business last night 31-23 against Clarke Central that was definitely not as close as the score would indicate. It was another sleep walking version of the EAST team last night…no emotion, no discipline and definitely not the kind of execution needed to win a State Championship!
While I’m on my rant, I would also like to point out two other issues from last night…the EAST PAULDING crowd or should I say the lack of one and the officiating.
I was expecting an upgraded group of officials for the playoffs but apparently not the case. That was the worst officiated game we have had all year…horrible!!!!
Back to the crowd, while the EAST fans that braved the cold were certainly LOUD and ROWDY as usual…the overall attendance was WEAK!!! This is an undefeated RAIDERS team with a very good chance to make a deep run in the playoffs, the stands SHOULD be overflowing every week!!! I challenge all of Paulding County to be at the 2ND ROUND STATE PLAYOFF GAME at the BONEYARD!!!!!!!

Well I was planning to get hoe from the game last night and post…
I got in,started several post and then stopped…needed some deep breaths…
FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT…
the score—> EAST PAULDING 31 / CLARKE CENTRAL 23!!
RAIDERS move on to ROUND 2!!
Now the VENT…EAST has had issues thru the year (like many teams) with an several refs usually from the ETOWAH VALLAY ASSOCIATION! I have decided this is just going to happen…some take the job too serious and call a game way too close and don’t let the kids play while others are just plain STUPID with their calls! The best we can hope for is that one of the bad call (use mistake, error, missed or whatever term you want here) doesn’t change the outcome of a game… ESPECIALLY A PLAYOFF GAME THIS TIME OF THE YEAR!
Last night unfortunately was one of those games and as they announced the refs and where they were from it appeared they were each from different associations..maybe the G.H.S.A. does this and mixes them up?…I don’t know…
This game should have easily been EAST 38+ / CLARKE CENTRAL 9 (maybe)…
On the last TD drive alone these REF’s called 3 different 15 yard penalties against EAST!!! Late in the game allowing CLARKE CENTRAL to pull within the 31 / 23 score…this left the game within a onside kick recovery and a TD with a 2 point conversion of being tied!!! UNREAL!!!!
During the game they called pass interference calls against EAST when BOTH players were looking back at the ball and going for it. NO HOLDING, NO HANDS wrapped around the receiver nothing but two players…one going for the catch the other for the interception! AND they made the calls late after the play as if he had to “THINK ABOUT IT”.
They called bad grounding calls against the EAST QB while allowing the QB to be sacked, hit and rolled on without calling roughing the passer! While allowing the CLARKE CENTRAL QB to avoid a sack by simply drop the ball as he got hit and calling it an incomplete pass!
OK…I feel better now…………..again the most important thing!!

@Bigdawg1989…I think we had a pretty good crowd but they seemed to be in cruise mode meaning they didn’t seem to be as much into last nights game as they were against Allatoona. Maybe the lack of support by C.C. fans had something to do with it. I think their band was the largest part of their crowd. I know it’s a long drive but that didn’t stop us when we traveled to C.C. two seasons ago. It’s kind of sad that a team with the history in the playoffs such as C.C. didn’t get any more support from its fans than it did.
Congrats to the other region 5 teams that moved on, especially N.P.. Great job Wolfpack, I knew you guys had more than just a chance of winning but man that was SSSWWWEEEEEEEETTTT!!!!!

WOW, Tucker gets a home game in this year’s playoff, Thanks in part to North Paulding. As the Tucker Fan base mention, the Tigers are the BEST #3 seated team in this year’s race for the crown. Congrates to Creekview on a very successful 2012 season and good luck in the future.

Went to the North game last night. I was not the only one that was sitting there with a dropped jaw most of the night. Having a 3TD lead with 5:42 remaining should be enough but we were still worried. :18 later it was a 2TD lead and the ensuring onside kick(5th of the night I think), bounced right off the North player right back to FB but then it ricocheted right back. Unbelievable game. It was a magical night for that program and now they get to experience Adams stadium and facing Tucker. It should be an easy W for your Tigers, but after what I just saw, I truly believe in the “On any given night” theory, but oddly now I think those kids might also. WOW
Didn’t think I’d have to make this decision but will arrange to find you next week to say hey if I decide to watch North. Not going to see East and probably Stephenson will be really hard.

Congrats to all the teams who got a W last night. 2 more games Lef and then it’s the sweet 16!. I’m so proud of my Tucker Tigers for how they played. The score was 35-3 at one point and then they took a step back. The final was 42-25 but trust me it wasn’t really that close. Well north paulding is next and they come to ADAMS stadium! Tucker’s last loss at Adams was in 2009 to SWD. This is jus saying that we don’t lose at home! I’m more than happy that north paulding upset flowery branch because y’all have given tucker a home playoff game!! Well it’s time for round 2!!!

Tough game last but guess what we still here and believe it or not we had a a bunch of players banged up some starters not even dressed but I can say SWD has always been very athletic coaching was the difference. Very good running team not much passing. Well looks like we will see the Red Elephants and a sure enough great QB

Warner Robins Demons got a scare tonight. Had to hunt to find the score but finally did. It was 14-9 at halftime WR, and now I see the final against Richmond Hill was 17-15. Looks like WR only got a FG in the 2nd half and RH scored a touchdown and went for two without making it. That’s what I’m guessing as I have seen no details yet. That’s a lot closer than most thought it would be. So it will be WR vs Harris County. Should be a good one!

Within all due respect, the winners of those games in round had gone accordly expect for the SWD vs Kell. I really expected all upset by SWD. I was saying all week that SWD can beat Kell if they elimante mistakes and if the game was low scoring which would be in SWD favor. It was low scoring and it ws in favor for SWD but lost in the final minutes of the game. I am sorry to say this for SWD fans & I know the fristration you must be feeling now, as I hate to say this but a COACHING CHANGE IS NEEDED! Starting over with the entire staff. I know you heard this before but if you continue with Coach Godfrey you will not make the playoffs in the future. The region is strong and you have up comings teams like Miller Grove, Dunwoody, Mays, & North Atlanta that will be very very competitve in the region. Just something to think about.
Now onto the ending of a great weekend of football. To some people, did you think Stephenson was going to lose in the first round? I know what your thinking, I really wasn’t expecting Stephenson to lose but I sure was hoping so. LOL Not going to happen. I predict and three team dekalb county semis with and all dekalb county state Championship game. I think I will make the trip to EP vs Stephenson game. I been seeing this TICK… TICK… TICK… BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM all over the blog so I really want to hear this cannon sound off or either fizzle out. I am expecting another good game by Stephenson with a 24-17 victory over EP. Good luck to Tucker & MLK.

@ THE “CANNON RULES”!!, (BOTH TEAMS WAS PENALIZED, 31 – 11 I DON’T THINK SO) ‘The real story is that Stephenson defense was too much for Pope offense. The only true offensive drive that they did accomplished (POPE) was haulted by a field goal. Stephenson played real sloppy in the first half, in the second half Stephenson defense just crushed Pope, the only score that they did score was because Stephenson was penalized for accessive celabration on the kickoff, Pope got the ball around their 40 yrd. line and Stephenson got penalized again for a called that very questionable (that was half the distance to the goal). After that Pope didn’t moved the ball, 2 turnovers, an interception by Stephenson that lead to a touchdown and big runs by Stephenson RB that was unstopable by POpe. “YOU WANTED THE REAL TRUE STORY!’…

The real story is Stephenson was not very impressive, they are smaller and slower then I expected. If not for a few Pope mistakes late in the game this would have been a far different outcome. EP Family we have (nothing, zero, nilch) to worry about. This game won`t even be close. 42-17, and I`m being generous with the 17.

All I no is this is high school football and most of these team are good and I can say I’ve been around it for 20years. It’s anybody’s game when the lights come on seen many 4seed nock off plenty ones seed 3 seed nock of 2 seeds. But in order to be consider a power house you got to have a state championship like NSWR. Camden, Tucker , and SWD to call Miller Grover a power house is a insult to the real ones. Great post Horns, you are so right East is not there, but we are pushing for it. MG is a powerhouse, why? because they beat you beloved Jags, really JAB. @JAB – “How many top ten ranked schools did you play”
I’ll put it this way. We only play region games. We beat Allatoona ranked 5th at the time. We also beat North Paulding (away) who just destroyed 8th ranked FB and a #1 seed. Our region also went 3-1 in the first round last year, beating Marist, Mays and SWD. So maybe you should be concerned our region only schedule is stronger than you think.

Stephenson just got out of the 1st, for the 1st time in 4 yes i said four years. MLK has not won a thing and the rest I won`t take the time to mention. SWD was once a decent program, but to many school built around it took all the talent, in the coach style is still the same, so the results are still the same.

See I agree with JAB that they have strong teams in their region. BUT I also think we are stronger than people think. North Paulding, East Paulding, Allatoona and Hiram defiantly have strong feeder programs, and our playoff results the late several years is showing that.

SOmehow I can’t believe the comment you have to win the state championship in order to be called a powerhouse? Really EPRaider? You must had to much moonshine when you wrote your blog. Yes Tucker, MLK Stephenson are powerhouses football programs, I don’t think you wouldn’t find to many people to disagree with that unless you mention have MLK & STephenson won state. I can agree with you on that No they haven’t but has East Paulding won state? I am not sure, I have to check the records on that unless someone can tell me. Has East Paulding gotten as many football players in college over there historic program? So to answer your question about powerhouse programs when the scouts come to your school ask them what school they heard are powerhouse programs I am sure many will mention theschools I named above, but maybe your bias will still make you think no those are not powerhouse programs.

I try not to get too much into the trash talk, but some of you make no sense. MLK and Stephenson has by een playing up the last few years because they want to compete in the highest classification. They have had much success there. Even though they have not won titles, they have remained in the top 10 in the highest classifications. MLK is arguably the best team who has not won a state title. I’m willing to bet; if they played in their correct classification, they would probably have a state title by now. Look at NSWR…they didn’t make it too far in AAAAA, when they were there. As a matter of fact, they never even won a region title in AAAAA. Now that MLK and Stephenson is playing in their proper classification, let’s see what happen. Don’t be surprised if your opinion of them change…just a little food for thought!

King of Diamonds: I hear your concern that NSWR needs to be on alert when they play TCC Friday. No team can be taken for granted in the play-offs. All team Sophmores can now be considered Juniors and battlle tested. I believe that why some teams do so well at the end of the season. My concern for NSWR and Tucker is that the winner have something left for the semi’s. after beating up on each other. This also goes for this week’s game between East Paulding and Stephenson. .

Reality bloggers the best team in AAAAA over the last 3 years is “TUCKER” 2 titles in 3 years, they are in region 6AAAAA, have been region champions before MLK & Stephenson got here from the state’s largest classification, if our point is not valid why is it that the only regular season opponent that Tucker lost to was MLK & Stephenson. Now that’s the end of “POWERHOUSE CLASS 101″, I’ll be teaching a new class after next week playoff titled; (Region 5AAAAA not all that 102)… Lol.,

MLK has never said they won a State Championship!!!! But, I need to be reminded when East Paulding has won anything? Help me out, because I really don’t know.
Also, I was a little nervous about the playoffs once the MLK QB was injured. However, the junior QB just threw for 300 plus yards and was throwing an excellent ball doing it.

I never said that EP was a power house and yes I consider MLK ,Stephenson.,East Paulding great programs , but not power houses you guy haven been around long enough, I can bet who ever makes it to the championship game your facing NSWR . I don’t no a coach in this state that like his odds, people respect teams with long wining history NG not a power house just a great program BUFORD is a power house .The way you classify a power house is your business, but as a circle of coaches we don’t see it that way just because you make the playoffs every year don’t mean squat. Wow! All this chatter, this thing is beginning to heat up! We’ve been here before so no need for us to shine a light or rain on any ones parade. Our new found region 6 buddies are enjoying themselves as they go through this new league. No big deal for us. I must caution everyone of you not to look at Tuckers record or who we lost to and try to draw conclusions as we could have won anyone of those games.
It is clear that we have a new head coach and everyone on the staff were trying to find their roles this season. But that was this season, the playoffs is a new season and best believe that we are a new team with a new purpose. If there is anyone out there that think that Tucker is weak and wish you were playing us then let him or her speak now. If not then get ready for the same old same old.
We don’t like losing but we learned somethings about ourselves that has made us a better team. After we deal with North Paulding we are coming for you NSWR. Don’t slip up before we get to you! I am tire of hearing those lame excuses as to why we came into your house last year and beat you. It’s funny how karma works, you ask for us and you are about to see us again. You should be careful about what you ask for because you just may get it.
Look out GHSA because this 3 seed team is playing with a chip on it’s shoulder and we are looking for someone to prove that we are still the reigning STATE CHAMPIONS, and no matter what field we play on you still have to go through us to get to the championship!!!!!!!

Stephenson has never won a road game in the playoffs. All 14 of Stephenson’s playoff victories have come at DeKalb County’s Hallford Stadium. East Paulding is 6-1 in the playoffs at its home field, the Boneyard. The only loss came last season against Warner Robins in the quarterfinals.

WOW!!!…I went to the FALCONS game yesterday, stayed off the blog and missed all the fun!

Sorry I missed the game Saturday night, really wish now I had went…Everything I am seeing shows a 4th quarter score of STEPHENSON 14 / POPE 11…then everything seems to have blew up! That’s a tight game it seems…not being there in person I don’t know…BOTTOM LINE is STEPHENSON won and a “W” is a “W” and you guys advance! (Like the FALCONS yesterday it was sloppy and UGLY but they won!)
Looking forward to this Friday in “THE BONEYARD”…I will take YOUR word about STEPHENSON and IF they are as you ADVERTISE on here then we are all if for a REALLY GOOD GAME! If stats mean ANYTHING…STEPHENSON is allowing 16.7 per game while EAST has allowed only 10.27, and STEPHENSON is scoring an average of 33 points per game / EAST 41+. Additionally STEPHENSON LOST to M.L.K. & MILLER GROVE and barely escaped another loss to a very average MAYS team in a 28 / 27 win!
Conceding that STEPHENSON played a stronger schedule and comes into this game at 8 / 2 and EAST is UNDEFEATED at 11 / 0 this looks like a VERY GOOD match-up on paper!

You say you sholda won but you didn’t then you give a reason to why your team lost. Here is the bottom line regardless of how you win its a WIN. The game is played for the entire let me say this againe THE ENTIRE 48 MINUTES.UNTIL THE CLOCK REACHES ZERO! If a team wins off a hail Mary guess what.. THEY WON! if a team kicks a field goal and win by 1 point guess what THEY WON! So please stop saying well we played good up until stop it stop it please with your excuses. I don’t care how many points Stephenson win by as long as it’s a win and the losing team can keep talking about what happen in the game but guess where they will be talking about the game.. The article ALSO had a quote from the POPE coach who said how proud he was of the POPE players who played hard against a STEPHENSON team that “had more pure athletes on it’s KICKING TEAM than POPE has on it’s ENTIRE TEAM”!!! Now that’s a coach respecting the other team! He was “tipping the hat” to STEPHENSON for their WIN!!!

To everyone who mention about MLK lack of a state championship/powerhouse. Not making ANY excuses but we have only played 10 years of varsity made the playoffs 9 straight. Has WON more games in the first 6 years than ANY team in the state! Like all DeKalb county schools has revenue sharing with ALL schools (20+). Condos to ALL coaches in DeKalb, because you LOVE the players and the game. I am willing to bet over 85% of the coaches in the state will not come to DeKalb b/c of the $$$. Everyone knows that the TALENT is here!

East Paulding has a solid program and looks great this year. But you seem to have forgotten the only time the Raiders have made it to the semi’s, in 2006. In that game, East Paulding was defeated by Marist of Region 6 by the score of 27-7.
Having said that, I would be surprised if EP doesn’t beat Stephenson on Friday. The Jaguars are dangerous and athletic, but they haven’t looked sharp since beating Tucker 13-6 earlier in the season.

Historian – Youre right, I was at that game and we had no answer for the ‘white buffalo’. That Marist team only lost to Tucker and then the 30-0 Northside team in the final.
Top to bottom region 6 is the best in AAAAA, but that’s due to MLK and Stephenson moving down this year. Tucker – yeah, great tradition, and SWD played some great ball back in the day. But Marist is beating up on AAAA teams now, and SWD and Mays haven’t done much lately.
Back in the day, Rome used to kill EP by 4 or 5 or 6 TD’s, but East has owned them going 5-0 since 2006.
Back in the day Valdota and Lowndes wouldn’t have lost in the 1st round.
Point is, THIS ISN’T BACK IN THE DAY.
This is the dawn of the era of Paulding County. East is leading the way and North and South look like they’ll catch up pretty soon.

MLK is a very complete team this year,been a joy to watch….I believe this is the team that will get it done this year…The last three years weve come close, Lost to Walton by a last second field goal,Colquitt County in a shoot out by a missed two point conversion, last year to Lassiter in a very close game….This team has talent, heart,and well coached……

@RealisticFan . . . . .Stephenson has a great combination of size, speed and athleticism. Defense is underated. Their speed and athleticism, makes up for any mistakes. Defensive line, is where the size and athleticism shows the most. Offense, everyone talks about their slasher as a good running back but #23 can take it to the house any time he touches the rock. Quarterback (in my opinion) is under utilized. This guy has tools but (in my opinion) is lost running the system he has to run. Overall, when this team is clicking, it is tough to beat. #23 is a beast!

One thing I will say about EP this year. They have shown up for the big games. The team that played Rome and Allatoona I would put up against anyone. I hope everyone has recovered from the CC game. We had a few young men a little beat up and some pretty big shoes to fill if Aaron Black is out.

I appreciate the reply, I would really line more of a scouting report. Type of offense, special teams , defense 3-4. 3-5?, yes the strengths but weaknesses also. Thinks that you as a fan know your jags are suceptible to. Coaching tendencies ? Something REAL.
I really don’t care about how many D1 candidates their are because unless all that potential “all in” fur the team and not for what might be at the next level then it doesn’t mean a dang thing. Give me 40 kids that love each other, respect the game, their coaches and committed to one another any day of the week over a group of D1 capable individuals. I may be way off base but the Stephenson bloggers act as it D1 talent translates to wins in a team sport.

tcc Champs!: Worry not! NSWR is taking one game at a time. TCC is a quality football team and I am sure angry for losing to Harris Cty—– so they will come out strong. All teams are banged-up this late in the season. I doubt there are any teams that do not have some players sitting out due to injuries. I know NSWR has four or fiv, a couple done for the season.
The exception may be teams in 5A Region 6. They seem to be injury free based on their blogs.

@Blu eagle, I just can’t figure out this facination that you NSWR fans have with TUCKER. It’s like having a death wish. You keep asking for us as if we don’t work hard over here.
You have got to understand that this is not what you want. We get up every morning during the week to lift weights and even sometimes on game day. We have been practicing since the season was over last year. When we lost our coach our fathers took over the team and kept practicing. We have a very unique community over here. We are surrounded by Gyms and speed training facilities so we never stop working. The coach never requires us to work in the off season but our kids want to get better so they weight train with a personal trainer and the skill kids go to the SPEED facility and get faster.
Football in Tucker is not just a sport, it’s a way of life for most, and a business for others. So if you think that Tucker is going to have a down year then you are sadly mistaken.
I have tried to explain to anyone that would listen on this blog that we had a coaching turn over and got off to a slow start (8 -2 is a slow start at Tucker) but we are clicking on all points right now. This team is loaded with talent. Most of these kids have been on the field since they were 9th graders. To make this worst the whole defense is coming back next year and the entire back field as well so we will be even more potent next year!
Keep asking for us and this bulletin board material is going to get our motivation so high that we wont need a bus to get to Warner Robins we will just fly down! It is on now. All I can think about is destroying NSWR and shutting your mouths once and for all. NO EXCUSES!!!!!!! IT”S ON!!!!!!!

Oh, I would be remissed if I didn’t mention North Paulding. We have not overlooked them. We have done our homework. #21 is big and strong with decent speed. They run the spread with their favorite play being the off tackle draw. #4 is a speedster and can get out if you don’t contain him. Very physical defensive line and aggressive linebackers. Average cornerbacks.
All I have to say is the Allatoona game told the story. They run a simular offense to us and they exposed your weakness in the first 5 plays of the game. If you insist on being tight in the box there will be some openings in the secondary. If you loosen up we have speed coming out of the backfield that will be standing in the enzone eating a tuna fish sandwich before you realize he’s scored.
Very well coached team, as I can see why they beat Flowery Branch. I know they will present some problems but I doubt that they have been hit in the mouth like we are going to on Friday. This is what we do. We played this kind of football all year long. Thanks to MLK, Miller Grove, Arabia Mountian, and Mays we have seen the spread all year long and we have held it down.
