Mill Creek 41, Alpharetta 39

By David Purdum / For the AJC

Jacorey Lewis rushed for 343 yards and scored five touchdowns, but Mill Creek needed a 25-yard field goal from Bryson King with seven seconds to play to advance past resilient Alpharetta, 41-39, Friday in first-round playoff action.

Trailing for the first time all night, Mill Creek converted a 4th-and-10 from its own 16 en route to setting up King’s winning kick. King had a kick blocked earlier and also was thwarted by a botched snap on a field-goal attempt, but the sophomore was pure on the winning kick.

Alpharetta (7-4) took its first lead, 39-38, on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Josh Dobbs to Daniel Clements, followed by a two-point conversion from Dobbs to Adam Schildhammer with two minutes to play.

But a banged-up Raiders’ defense couldn’t come up with a stop when it needed it most. Alpharetta lost star defensive end Naim Mustafaa, a Georgia commitment, to a leg injury in the second quarter and also played without suspended receiver Carlos Burse.

The Hawks (8-3) will face No. 1 Lassiter Brookwood, which upset No. 1 Lassiter.

Lewis dominated, gashing the gut of the Raiders’ defense and scoring on runs of 43, 37, 14, 13 and 1 yard for the Hawks. He had two big first-down carries on the game-winning drive.

Mill Creek rushed for 421 yards.

Dobbs, who’s headed to Arizona State, was under constant pressure, but still managed to complete 23-of-40 passes for 271 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.

Bryce Grauss blocked a field goal, and Stefohn Perry scooped up the ball and raced 94 yards for a tying score in the third quarter for Alpharetta.

These two teams met in Week 2 last season, with Mill Creek winning 42-7. Friday’s game started off in similar fashion with the Hawks jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter.

But Alpharetta scored 10 points in the final minute of the first half and would hang tough throughout. Dobbs found Schildhammer in back corner of the end zone for the Raiders’ first score with 50 seconds left in the second quarter.

Tre Whitaker’s interception setup a Thomas Waller field goal to cut the Hawks’ lead to 17-10 at intermission.

(Correction: Mill Creek advanced to the second round to face Brookwood).

I think Mill Creek would be better off preparing for Brookwood since they won the game against Lassiter in OT

Congrats to MC great game hell of a running back. The Raiders could not over come the loss of both their Defensive Ends. This is by far one the most exiciting High football games I’ve ever watched. Hate that their had to be loser. Dobbs regardless of how this post season shakes out i can honestly Josh Dobbs is the best High School Quarteback I’ve ever seen play the game Arizona State got a steal. Good luck to the seniors of Alpharetta and God Bless.

Proud of our Hawks’ win tonight. Way to go boys! On to Brookwood at home! However, I have to agree that the QB at Alpharetta is truly the best high school QB I have ever seen, as well. Good luck to Dobbs in the future. Can’t wait to watch him on TV on Saturdays in the coming years.

missy is no Hawk fan. Dobbs isnt better than haynes of n Gwinnett or Z Moon of Brookwood. Dobbs can’t win the big game. Real football players get it done on the gridiron. Dobbs is a CAMPER not a GAMER.

@hawk fan 39 points is not a gamer he put his tean up with 2 mins to go. Defense got to hold. So Please stop talking out of your @$$ and get real ask either coach who they would take and each would trade their starting QB in a heartbeat, Men lie women lie numbers don’t he performs at camps and comes back to lead the state in passing on the gridiron and this is what you come up with. Waisting my time responding to you. Good day Sir/Madam.

System spread QB. not impressed. never won a play off game, doesn’t make anyone around him better, the system covers up inadequacies of an average QB. 4 losses in a weak region? Not one quality win with Dobbs at QB. OVERRATED

what 4 losses in weak region 1 loss in region to WF, Lovejoy top 10 team, West forsyth top ten team, Milton. One lose in region get your facts straight. Then you get lucky with both DE’S going out in the first half and one of the states top receivers doesn’t play. he doesn’t make anyone around him better yet He has #86 Clements 1300+ yards 12 TD’s as a junior who is top five in the state in receiving and no running game to speak of. Once agin stop talking out of your @ss . Average is your QB no TD”s 1 Int. You run the spread to hide his short comings thats why you run the ball. I would love to see you play our schedule and see what happens. Good luck against brookwood you will need it.
