I use to follow Fitzgerald in region 1AA moved to St. Simons 2 yrs ago aka CANEFAN….and they swept the first 2-3 rounds…..I feel region 1-6A is a different animal…..Coffee will be a contender next year……..region 1-6A versus 28 teams from the norththey will contend for the TITLE!!!!!!!!!

Gamer…that is a pretty cool post. I always think about my HS playing days and how it impacted my life. I did not have a father in the home and my defensive coordinator and DB coach fulfilled a very important role in my life and I still thank them to this day. (28 years later).

Well hallelujah, the Colquitt Co-McEachern game is on GPB-TV tonite! Seems a South GA team has to be in the Atlanta area for them to ever be on GPB. Will be much better watching it on TV than on the internet. Although I have already thought of one adjustment I will have to make. I just can’t handle those GPB announcers, as they are even one notch below Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, so will mute the TV sound and fixate on the Packers announcers (Todd Holcomb’s favorites) on Cruisin 94. That should work and make for some interesting listening and game descriptions from Dorminey and Strange. I see now why TH likes them, as they do add some “redneck flair” to it. (”Redneck flair”, now that would have to be an oxymoron wouldn’t it?)

@Dum-Bass=Man u crazy dude!!! I was thinking the same thing. Even if i could have mad it to the game i still would be trying to hear Dorminey and Strange cause those guys rock!!! They love the Golden Heard for real and us Packer fans love them to death. I will be watching the game but listening to Cruisin 94 on my Laptop!!!! Enjoy the game bro

I agree with gamer. It is sad to think that for a lot of players past, present and furture that their h.s. football days were or will be the highlight of their lives. I know a lot of guys who focused entirely on football and nothing else and now they wish they had worked as hard at their education. I’m not saying all players share this future, thank goodness, but too many will. Here’s wishing all who play tonight, win or lose, have fun and stay safe. GO RAIDERS!!!!!

The day of reckoning is finally here! After this weekend, half of the playoff teams will be headed home to start basketball season. The smack talking from the regular season will be a thing of the past for some. Only a handful of the faithful will remain. Who will hoist the Title Trophy in Class 6A? Will it be Camden, Grayson, Lowndes, Lassiter, Colquitt, Norcross or a surprise dark horse that shocks everyone? Will the Gwinnett Teams lay claim to another 6A Title or will Region 1 step up and turn the tide? Will a Cobb or Dekalb Team make it’s presence felt? No one knows for sure, so stay tuned. The answers to these questions start tonight! If you have a weak constitution, maybe you should leave the comments section prior to tonight’s games. Because there will surely be some last minute, last time of the season for some, SMACK TALKING! Can you take the HEAT? Release the CATS! Go Camden County Wildcats!

You might see some of the Cobb people on here if they knock off a region 1 team (and God forbid if they knock off 2). Though some Cobb people would say Reg 1 fans would deserve any smack talk they get the way some go on and on about things.
I am a Cobb person, and just want to see good football that isn’t spoiled by a horrible call or something. Let the teams decide it on the field. Go Trojans!

@mikepete – Looks like a win tonight but Tucker does not have it this year. Offense is not improving and too many dumb penalties (illegal motion, false start, too much time). Coach Lamar has his hands full. Defense looks pretty good to me though.
One more thing, I love those guys that announce for Colquitt. The coach is crazier than a sack full of weasels but the anouncers have converted me to a fan the last few weeks.

We’re sure seeing why Cobb County hasn’t won the State in the largest qualifcation for eons. McEachern behind 30-21. Not a surprise. McEachern folded in 2009 with a GREAT undefeated team to Brookwood 20-10 in the first round, and that was after McEachern had clobbered Brookwood in the dome that same year to open the season.

re: Brookwood-Lassiter … I think there’s value to Brookwood playing in that region. Facing Grayson, Parkview, South Gwinnett, even Central and Archer. And in all of those games, there was a sense of urgency, of trying to make the playoffs. Just seemed like Lassiter was cruising after Walton.

Son of Waco, from what I know of Callaway, they have historically had trouble with the traditional powers of the State (Buford, Fitzgerald). I honestly haven’t seen them this year because I am in Kentucky, but from what I read in the online newspaper, they are VERY balanced. So I would be shocked if WACO blows out Callaway.

the refs did play a role in the game whether anyone wants to admit it or not. Brookwood played a hell of a game, good for them. Lassiter looked stale in 2nd half after Wilson got hurt and being without Dickey on the outside also hurt the passing game. But the camera a couple of times showed clear horse collars that were not called and other penalties that were called that I just didn’t see. Not saying they weren’t there, but it really seemed like the refs became too invled in the game in the 2nd half compared to the 1st.
Lassiter almost pulled it out, but the defense was dead by the 4th quarter because the Lassiter offense went into super-conservative mode like they have done all year when they get up by 15+. Didn’t think that would happen tonight, but it did.
I know there will be a otn of people making fin of Cobb football on here the next few days, but it has come a long way from just 4 or 5 years ago. And the matchups were never going to be good for Cobb this year.

Gwinnett Dad, you might want to get better info before you stare rejoicing about Cobb County. Marietta traveled to Lowndes and won, and North Cobb whipped mighty Valdosta. Region 1 got spanked when many thought they were unbeatable. Why all the hate at Cobb? Did you get some speeding tickets here? Or just jealous?

Propst and Colquitt are losers. Everyone knows Propst is an a**hole, which was further obvious by his halftime comments on TV. Then a McEachern player is hurt in front of the Colquitt bench, and no one from Colquitt tries to help while he writhes waiting for McEachern’s trainer to come all the way across the field. Yet McEachern classily helped injured Colquitt players earlier in the game.

But it promises to be a good one for sure. NG has caused 24 + fumbles this year and recovered over 16 or 17 of them. That’s our biggest strength against Grayson other than Michael Haynes, but I’m not fool and neither is Mr. Nkemdiche lol. Interesting to note though…NG has been missing from ALL media attention for once. You can kind of see that reflected in their play. They want recognition and if you want to be the best you gotta beat the best. Spot us 1 TD and an extra TO lol

Lowndes made to many mistakes. We got behind 23-6….camd back 23-20….got down again 30-20..then came back 30-27….and got it back again and our qb just could not pull the trigger

Lang and burgman both played hrt tonight for lowndes…….prob both were 80% lang had a 99 yd kickoff return for a td and 40 yd td run…….burgman made a lot of big plays….these guys showed a lot of heart

I am not completely surprised in the Valdosta game but was pretty impressed Marietta was able to go to Lowndes and get the win. That’s not easy. Lowndes defense didn’t look sharp at all. I didn’t think Lowndes had the team to go real deep this year because they are young, but thought they would get out the first and possibly second rounds. Those that want to jump on Lowndes/Valdosta or south Georgia may want to check the history. With less than 10 teams that make up AAAAAAA football in Georgia, a south Georgia team has won like 9 of the last 12 championships. Valdosta and Lowndes has proven over the years how football is played. This year they were victims of how the playoffs can be. They will be back. Especially Lowndes. Congrats to Marietta on a tough win in a place not many teams are able to come in and do. Good luck to Camden and Colquitt the rest of the way.I only lived in Valdosta for 3 years and moved away 2 years ago, but it’s hard not to fall in love with such great programs and their history. No doubt south Georgia football is like nothing I have ever seen and they have the hardware and fans to prove it.

First off, Congrats to N Cobb and Marietta for their playoff wins. As for all you posters tripping over yourself to say that Region 1 is dead all I can say is you should not let the likes of bksmith and others cloud your judgement so much…..there is a possibility that no SEC team will be in the BCS championship, so I guess you can say that the league is dead as well! I would encourage you to compare Region to Region…not the entire North to 4 teams from South Georgia and common sense will tell you they broke EVEN…..but I understand that you have been victims of senseless blogging from rabid fans (and endured years of losing to these teams as well)….So tonight is yours…celebrate the demise of Region 1 and then pray like heck that Camden or Colquitt do not make a deep run.
I have been on this blog all season telling folks that the QB play at Lowndes and Valdosta was subpar at best and it came full circle tonight. It hurts for the young men I work with and know so well, but for the coaching systems, I feel that these losses should open a lot of eyes down here. They simply do not develop African American athletes at the QB position which reduces the chance for dual threat QBs…just my opinion.

My question is, Why is everyone trying now to claim what I have said from the start of the year. Region 1 was and is Over-rated. I said from the beginning that if Colquit was the standard bearer, then region 1 had not much to offer. Let’s back track, shall we ? In pre-season, Colquit was a co-favorite to win it all, along with Grayson and Camden. Colquit, known for starting slow and catching fire late, did just that. Although they escaped tonight, they now know it won’t be easy. Lowndes, whom I have criticized for not playing as tough a schedule as we ( Lovejoy ) they were not who people thought they were. As I said, Marietta came ready to play and that running game was not enough to pull them through. The lack of a passing game will hurt you. Valdosta, what can I say. Overall, Region one did not show well. For all the hype, it was a bust. Camden did their part and to a degree so did Colquit. You are not dominant. You are, at best average. Two of your best were beaten by what you looked past. You already claimed superiority. History will show otherwise. There is good football being played all over Georgia and at some point, you will have to accept that. Let tonight be a teaching lesson and like-wise, a learning moment. So much talk. So little results. I said Camden was the only team in region 1 playing ball and I meant that.

titletown usa i agree with you……..we need to put better athletes behind center……we were better when we had a kary franklint type of qb behind center. the wing t is most lethal when you have a qb who can keep it on a fake and take it to the house…like tucker had last year and we have had in years past. we have went to the qb behind center who cant throw that well systema dn it has bit us in the butt………….got a lot of good talent coming up..we will see what happens

Lowndes had a solid year….9-2………i thought coming into the year we would be 7-3 or 8-2….we succeeded my expectations……….very young team overall……

Camden 74-If Gwinnett didn’t have to knock each other out in round 1 or 2 every yearwe would probably win the title 80% of the time but GHSA had to nuetralize the great teams out of Gwinnett. Camden74 like it or not, Gwinnett is the best area in football right now but that should be expected because of the number and size of the schools. They also have very good youth leagues that do tie in loosely to the high schools. It does not guarantee championships but like happens in region 1, it does mean Gwinnett will have schools in the running for championships.

Just as I surmised, Griffin was bounced out again early. They were completely over-matched, out-coached and out-played. Those Monroe Tornadoes came to play, and they dealt a sho-nuff butt whipping on the lame Bears. I predicted as much, but am still disappointed that Griffin barely even showed up for the game. They were absolutely EMBARRASSED in their own house. I hope that Jerk PA announcer (named Rodney McCord) has nightmares of choking on his stupid overly-biased announcements about “This is how we do it at the house” – Yeah, LOSE! I hereby rescind any and all allegiance to Griffin High School, as they are perpetual LOSERS and I will not associate with them in any way shape or form, including (but not limited to) any and all booster gifts, fund-raising support, or team help or encouragement in any way. Those that are saying stuff about Region 1 or South Georgia being overrated and then bringing up history are fools. History obviously shows South Georgia teams have dominated AAAAAA the past 10-15 years. They still have 2 very likely contendered in it this year. A 2-2 record for Region 1 isn’t great but its not like one of their title contenders went down. Lowndes could have made a little run, but Lowndes wasn’t a state championship team this year. History shows Region 1/South Georgia are the teams to beat, and this year with Camden and Colquitt still playing it is no different. Some years even Region 1 teams will fall, just like the SEC who will likely not have a team in the championship this year. Does that mean the SEC is overrated? It happens. Enjoy it while you can because we all known Lowndes and Region 1 will be back in the hunt next year.

Gwinnettdad- Did you go back 16 years just to add another Gwinnett team in there? lol Look at the numbers….Current Region 1 teams have 8 teams compared to 20+ for Gwinnett? Yet, Region 1 still has more titles. Look at the numbers the last 10 years. Obviously Parkview has several of Gwinnett’s and they have kind of just falling off the map the last 8-10 years, whereas the Region 1 teams are there year in and year out. Grayson, North Gwinnett, and others are good. Really good, but to say South Georgia is overrated because Valdosta and Lowndes lost is crazy. Lowndes loss was surprising, I’ll admit, but I don’t think you will find a Region 1 guy who would have said at any point in the season, Lowndes was a championship contender. Could they have won it? Of course, but going in Camden and Colquitt were the teams expected to win it, and they are still around.

Region 1 posters are trying to make nice now. they have claimed all year that they had the best four teams in the state in 6A. “Sweep” they say ! Barely won two. One assured and one by a thread. Yes Lovejoy did lose to Colquit, your # 4 seed but your number 4 turns out to be your # 2. That makes your 2 and 3 over-rated, which makes your region not that strong. It is what it is. Even more, after Thompson beat us game 1 this year I came back on LIKE A MAN and gave respect. I know about the Purple Hurricanes pimp, though I wasn’t alive yet… But my family was there.. Hell, my granfather’s name is on every public school in BC (former board member).. So watch your mouth. The Real Bears are moving on to play next week. That’s all that matters.. and you are right genius. I won’t be there to see BC play any games because I LIVE IN NEW YORK AND HAVE A JOB!! Please believe that, if we are blessed enough to make it that far I will be streaming it live. For now, I can rest easy knowing there will be another game in the Bear Den next week. .. Northside-Warner Robins rans through that region like a hot knife running through butter. Can one person from Titletown admit that the historic programs of Region 1 (Valdosta, Lowndes, Tift County, Colquitt County, Coffee, Bainbridge, Thomas County Central and Thomasville) have been completely EXPOSED over the past 5-6 years. It started by the region going 1-17 against Northside-WR. Domination, like that, by a program with “only” two state championship is simply a sign of mediocrity. People get upset when I call a spade, a spade. The level of football, coaching and most of the fanbases down there are slightly above average. That is it! End of story.

I want to congratulate all Gwinnett teams on a terrific night. A special Congrats to Brookwood for their come from behind win and knocking off the number 1 ranked team in the State. It stinks that we have to knock each other off next week, but it is truly the only way that GHSA can nuetralize the Gwinnett dominance.

@ JUSTAFAN No need to be salty. Both were trash talking to each other. Even f Burke does lose to Sandy Creek they don’t have very many seniors. 3 on defense and 2 on offense. They are a junior and sophomore laden team, so the team should get better next year. That’s a scary thought for other schools in AAAA. I was looking forward to the Battle of the Bears.

Brookwood made 2 adjustments that made a big difference.
1) On defense. I could not believe at first how small the Brookwood defense was that opened the game. Lassiter did not need to throw as the first few drives they could hand off and get 7 or more yards every time. This looked like a blow out in the making. Then all the sudden in 2nd qtr Brookwood has a much larger defensive line. Looks like they had a couple offensive linemen play both ways and they neutralized the run game.
2) On offense. Brookwood began spreading the field in the second half. The first half they were trying to run with tight sets and Lassiter defense was having none of it. Late in 3rd qtr Brookwood began running a more spread offense often with playmakers 11 & 32 on same side. It exposed the one weakness Lassiter has on defense – they are not really a fast defense. The corners can run and never let 11 get deep. But in the middle of the field there is not blazing speed. Brookwood got everything all spread out and 32 suddenly was finding room to run in the 4th quarter and short passes over the middle had some success.
Despite all that this was still Lassiters game to lose. A huge play came when 22 (Wilson) for Lassiter got hurt in 3rd qtr and did not return. Wilson is a do everything player. Catches passes in the slot to move chains, runs the ball out of the backfield, emergency backup QB, and HOLDS ON PATS & FGS. Lassiter missed a 4th quarter FG that would have put the game out of reach with Printz holding. He got the ball down but other than a few times in practice, I would bet it is the first time he has done it in a game.
Lassiter defense needed to make just 1 more play. A sack or pass break up would have done it but they could not come up with one and Brookwood got tying TD with 8 seconds left. Printz tried to force a pass that got picked off in end zone in OT and Brookwood kicks game winner on next play. It was spinning funny as it went through like maybe someone got a hand on it but got through none the less.
Getting a big lead early and then letting teams back in has been a pattern Lassiter has dealt with in many games in regular season. This time a quality team made them pay the price. So congrats to Brookwood and best wishes against Mill Creek.

Anywho, I was specifically talking about 2009. Since NSWR doesn’t consider themselves South Georgia, I won’t call it an all South Georgia Final, even though they played in R1.

I said it here before that after that HUGE upset of Camden to Hillgrove in 2010, Hillgrove played at Brookwood the next round rather than Brookwood traveling to Camden. I will not question the #1 ranking no matter how short it was. The fact that a Cobb County team could achieve it heading into the playoffs and even have a couple Cobb teams advance over the more traditional powerhouses after putting 2 teams in the final 4 last year shows how far Cobb County HS football has come. It is great to be part of the conversation as it relates to the best programs in Georgia and the trend line is heading up.

Last post for the night. I went 13-3 in picks tonight, losing Lowndes, Valdosta, and Lassiter. Two of three were in the lower left bracket. I know NOTHING about 10-1 Hughes other than to say they lost to 6-5 Wheeler that got thumped tonight against Grayson. North Cobb has to be heavily favored on strength of schedule. Then there’s a 4 seed (Brookwood) and a 3 seed (Mill Creek). Doesn’t that look like North Cobb to make the semis?
Last, the AJC ran an article, I believe, earlier in the season. It was something about how winning high school teams were changing from being run oriented to pass oriented. Really! The two QBs they featured, however, will be sitting from now on since they both lost in the first round.

I dont know what the reocrd is for Colquitt county against teams in and around Atlanta is but I think we are ahead in total wins v losses. Most of those wins have come on the road and without much help. i.e. 2 non exsistent PI penalties v Grayson last year.

@Heisenberg: Good summary of Lassier game. We ahd talked a bout it a little throughout the season how they never tried to put teams away, just were content with the lead. Was bound to bite tham sooner or later and did.
WR didn’t help Printz much when he was having to scramble and buy time. He would wait and wait ut no one would come abck to ball until late. Wilson would have been huge there.
Hopeefully Lassiter uses this as a learning experience for everyone and it helps them build an even stronger foundation. They are getting there, and I thought this could be the year to get to the finals, but the JV and below all look strong so just need to keep building and it will all fall into palce soon enough.

McEachern was my “Dark Horse” in the playoffs, now that their out and Lassiter, I need to figure out who’s the new Cinderella. Let’s see how far North Cobb can go, maybe even West Forsyth will make a run.
Camden offensive players didn’t get their heads into the game until midway through the 2nd quarter. I hope they don’t continue to put the defense in bad situations like that. A top team would have put up 14 points or more off of the miscues.

Trying to get an idea of some areas where NG can exploit Grayson, but I’m struggling to do so by watching the replay of their game with Wheeler (if you even want to call it a game lol). Wheeler was TERRIBLE! Grayson could have easily scored 70 if they left the starters in. Wheeler went missing when defending the run and the pass all night. The Rams are still the team to beat.

Everyones Nose Running better known as ENR please explain how a team can go 17-1 in 2 years against a region of only 8 teams (including Northside, Warner and Houston cty.) and lose 2 of those games.

@Carolina GHSF Fan – I was going to let it slid but I’m still on page 16 and you keep digging your hole deeper! First – 6A has NOT been dominated by ANYONE because this is the first year! 5A, the former top classification was split even between North and South GA – 6 and 6. To further break it down, R3 had 3, R1 had 3, R7 and R5 split one and R8 had 5. If you want to talk Region and not North and South, R8 was the dominate region during 5A’s time as the top. That takes you bake 12 years and anything past that is nice but bears NO relevance to today as most of the coaches have changed (not all) and all of the players have changed.
Additionally, there are 17 Gwinnet County School System high schools this year. During the past 12 years, there have been a half dozen or more high schools open in GCPS. I specify GCPS because we also have several private/city schools that don’t play in the highest classifications.
If you are going to try to trash us, having your facts right would really help your arguments. As it is, you come across as someone who may not be as accurate as they might believe themselves to be.

@No quit: I see what you mean, but you can’t blame them. Over the last few weeks all we have heard is about the mighty Region 1 and it’s 4 monsters. How all 4 are getting thru the first round, heck even on page one of this blog post about watch out for Valdosta and Lowndes, they will bring their A game. Always talking about the south teams get no respect and could beat all thos north teams with ease cause they play no one. Where some post talk about the history and tradition, and so on and so on. Well after all the bragging all year, they deserve to get blasted, I mean who cares about the past, great they have won all those titles, but the past is the past, lets keep it about today and today they showed tru colors. Well tey both lost to north teams from Cobb, who were according to some post from region 1 not even the best region and lost. Now the VENT…EAST has had issues thru the year (like many teams) with an several refs usually from the ETOWAH VALLAY ASSOCIATION! I have decided this is just going to happen…some take the job too serious and call a game way too close and don’t let the kids play while others are just plain STUPID with their calls! The best we can hope for is that one of the bad call (use mistake, error, missed or whatever term you want here) doesn’t change the outcome of a game… ESPECIALLY A PLAYOFF GAME THIS TIME OF THE YEAR!
Last night unfortunately was one of those games and as they announced the refs and where they were from it appeared they were each from different associations..maybe the G.H.S.A. does this and mixes them up?…I don’t know…
This game should have easily been EAST 38+ / CLARKE CENTRAL 9 (maybe)…
On the last TD drive alone these REF’s called 3 different 15 yard penalties against EAST!!! Late in the game allowing CLARKE CENTRAL to pull within the 31 / 23 score…this left the game within a onside kick recovery and a TD with a 2 point conversion of being tied!!! UNREAL!!!!
During the game they called pass interference calls against EAST when BOTH players were looking back at the ball and going for it. NO HOLDING, NO HANDS wrapped around the receiver nothing but two players…one going for the catch the other for the interception! AND they made the calls late after the play as if he had to “THINK ABOUT IT”.
They called bad grounding calls against the EAST QB while allowing the QB to be sacked, hit and rolled on without calling roughing the passer! While allowing the CLARKE CENTRAL QB to avoid a sack by simply drop the ball as he got hit and calling it an incomplete pass!
OK…I feel better now…………..again the most important thing!!

@Sportsnut – well, thanks. The poem was a momentary inspiration. Bk actually stuck around last night to his credit. In the end, he’s simply overly exuberant, maybe I should cut him some slack. If Marietta can upset Lowndes playing there, Lovejoy should have a good test next Friday. Good luck.

@ GwinnettDad == Thanks. Congrats on the night. What was it 7-1 ? Thats the way to show where football is played. I have no problem with Gwinnett football. Good ball played over there. I don’t have a favorite in Gwinnett but I do have a friend who’s son is the center for South. Have not seen them much but I guess because of that I will be pulling for them. I really think Norcross is the real deal. Maybe we will see them if we both make it that far. You know where that will be !

The blog will be missing some Lowndes and Valdosta supporters. TitleTown, Yo, Viking Dad,Bksmith14, Dosta Cat, and a few others. They made earlier statements that their team could not defend. The key thing for all is not to bring up how young their team was for 2012, the referees cheated, their best player(s) was hurt, etc. . I hear theses excuses every year from some teams.
Man-up, accept your loss and look forward to basketball season.

EagleNationRising….thump your chest in AAAAA, it’s where your team belongs! Because when y’all were in Region 1 u were still 2nd best behind Lowndes, Lowndes lost 1 region game in 2 yrs and NSWR lost 2….2 the same amount of state titles your little pathetic school could muster over the years with all those “great” teams……talk to me before posting, Napoleon! (Complex is the reference)
