AAAAAA roundup

By Score Atlanta

Brookwood stormed back from deficits of 21-0 in the first half and 21-6 in the fourth quarter to stun host Lassiter 24-21. Brandon Morrow kicked two field goals to keep the Broncos within striking distance, and they struck with a vengeance in the final six minutes.

Josh Brown rushed for a touchdown, Zach Moon added a 2-point conversion, then Moon tossed a game-tying scoring pass to Ky Priester with eight seconds remaining. After forcing overtime, Brookwood maintained its momentum with an interception by Colin Cotter. That set up Morrow’s third field goal of the game, the clincher from 32 yards out.

Camden County 52, Hillgrove 17: Visiting Hillgrove led Camden County 10-7 in the second, but Camden County would score 35 unanswered points to regain the lead. Antonio Wimbush scored three rushing touchdowns to fuel the Camden County rally. Senior J.J. Green added a 73-yard touchdown run for the victorious Wildcats.

East Coweta 25, Newton 20: Visiting East Coweta trailed 12-7 early in the game but rallied behind Dee Godfrey’s three touchdowns. Godfrey rushed 14 times for 131 yards. He also made a leaping catch to intercept a pass late in the fourth quarter. East Coweta’s Anfernee Burks led the way on defense with seven tackles.

Grayson 49, Wheeler 9: The host Rams took the lead just 13 seconds into the game on David Fennell’s 80-yard touchdown run. Running back Wayne Gallman led Grayson with three touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of 53 and 30 yards, followed by a 52-yard catch. Aares McCall added a 29-yard touchdown run for the Rams.

Langston Hughes 37, Rockdale County 3: Host Langston Hughes took a mere 9-3 advantage into halftime, but inserting backup quarterback Kinan Humphrey for the second half proved to be a decisive move. Humphrey completed all four of his pass attempts for 82 yards, including a 26-yard scoring strike to Keion Davis and a 32-yard touchdown pass to Bingo Morton. Davis added two touchdowns on the ground.

Lovejoy 51, Tri-Cities 13: Visiting Tri-Cities could not muster any offense against Lovejoy and was down 37-0 at halftime. Travis Custis scored four touchdowns for Lovejoy. Brandon Davis scored on two key plays for Lovejoy with a 90-yard interception return and an 80-yard return of a missed field goal.

Marietta 30, Lowndes 27: Marietta led 16-6 at halftime and survived a late rally by host Lowndes. Quarterback Anthony Jennings threw three touchdown passes, one each to Chavez Hemphill, Tyree Harris and Jordan Mathis. In the fourth quarter, Jennings broke free up the middle for an 88-yard touchdown run. Two sacks by the Marietta defense ended Lowndes’ final drive.

Newnan 38, Alcovy 0: Newnan put together a spectacular defensive effort to shut out visiting Alcovy. Kelvin Khayyam scored two touchdowns for Newnan late in the game. Also scoring for Newnan was Rodney Tennie, who returned an interception for a touchdown. Tray Matthews also scored for Newnan, catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Bailey Bryant.

Norcross 34, Chattahoochee 7: The backfield combination of running back Alvin Kamara and quarterback Joseph Wilber were unstoppable for host Norcross. Kamara scored on two runs and caught a touchdown pass from Wilber. Wilber also connected with Trey Smith and Myles Autry on touchdown throws. Norcross led 27-0 at the half.

Parkview 20, Walton 17 (2OT): Justis Rosser made big plays all night to help visiting Parkview advance. Rosser scored in the third quarter on a 48-yard run to tie the game 7-7. In the second overtime Rosser stopped a Walton ball carrier on the 1-yard line forcing a field goal, then scored from 15 yards out to seal the victory.

It’s too bad the Lassiter’s QB’s dad couldn’t help bring in a few more players at Lassiter; maybe they would have gotten out of the first round. Why was Burse suspended for Alpharetta’s game; that hurt in a 41-39 last second loss.

@ Gwinnetts Finest == Parkview is slow on D. This will be a problem going foward. West is going to pass, pass and pass some more and your Db’s are going to have to play all-out. They do not have enough speed to keep up with West. If your D-line does it’s job, it may be a different story.
@ LovejoyDad == Nice to hear from you. I was lonely for a while but knew I would have company real soon. You are correct on the schedule issue. I don’t know why this is so hard for people to understand. We play who we are assigned to play and that is what it is. Lovejoy is the most complete team standing. All phases of the game being played at a high level.
@ FNLF == This is 2012, not 2011. We play where we are told. Up or down. Go back and complain to the GHSA that you want to play “Big Boy” football and maybe you can get your team moved.
@ Outsidelookingin == G.A.T.A. == They have done it again. They have found themselves back at the door and this time I hope they don’t knock but kick it in. 50 yard line Friday, as usual, watching them “Put dem Paws on Em”

FNLFis just a hater. We are used to this. Bad teams, weak region, We’ve heard it all before. Fact is Lovejoy really has 5a #s now. That will not be an excuse for winning or losing. We play with 11 at a time. One thing is for sure. Whoever wins state in 6a will have earned it.As long as Region 1 has to use state refs and not their south GA HOMEboys the games should be won fare and square. At least 1 other Region 1 team will go down this week. AT LEAST ONE!!!!!!!!!

Great game last night at Lowndes. Very impressive program they have. I’m sure they will agree that Anthony Jennings is probably the best QB in GA this year (although Brice Ramsey in a different offfense might be just as good). But Lowndes played their tails off and capitalized on a nice 99 yd kickoff return and a botched punt. they never quit. But now really, they do need to work on the passing game because Marietta had nine guys in the box all night. No doubt Lowndes will be right back in it next year. Thanks to the Vikings for your hospitality.

@ Marietta == Watched your game this morning. Very well done. We will be looking foward to you coming to 12 Oaks. At least you don’t have to leave the metro. Jennings is a good ball player and I only hope we can contain him. Again, congrats on the victory. We thought we would get the chance to shut their mouth’s but you did and that is O.K. by us. As long as someone did. Talk at you later. I have to find more outlets to continue laughing at both Lowndes and Valdosta.

Sportsnut/Lovejoydad – take your blinders off and read from the beginning. I was responding to Sportsnuts claim, November 16th, 2012, 11:56 pm of not being the weakest region. I did not bash or say Lovejoy was bad. I only pointed out you have only been tested twice. I believe (personal opinion) you shouldn’t claim not to be in the weakest region until yon have wins to back that up. Region 5 went 0-4 against Region 8. Region 8 has the potential to go 4-0 against ANY region. Your Region would likely go 1-3 against all with Lovejoy being the only win (see I give you credit) and in some cases 0-4. Maybe you just missed my point or I wasn’t clear enough. Sorry

I left the Lassiter/Brookwood game at the end of the 3rd quarter with Lassiter leading 21-6. As I walked along the fence behind the bench I commented to someone about the Lassiter players laughing and horsing around on the sidelines, not paying attention to the action on the field, as if they were counting on their #1 ranking to get them to the finals. I wasn’t totally surprised to learn they lost in the final minutes, nor was I disappointed that I didn’t hang around to watch them blow it in the end
.

That region going 0-4 makes them the weakest, no matter how you slice it. We have been tested every time we take the field. So has every other team. Each game is a test. We do not look at it the same way. Just as many of the region 1 posters said that they were not worried about non-region loses. They should worry about them all. From pre-season to the championship, every game is important. ” We could lose to Lovejoy and not be worried because it is not a region game”.This from a Colquit poster early in the season. It is important to establish an attitude of winning full-time and not just when you think there is something on the line. Fact is, there is always something on the line. Home field, we want it. No travel, we love it. Start at the beginning and try to win them all, no matter who you play.

My son plays for North Gwinnett but unfortunately his season/career ended vs. Peachtree Ridge with 2nd Head Injury this year. Ive noticed North Gwinnett is not getting much ink or much of a chance even as a dark horse. That’s really how you want it. That way it takes pressure off the team. The pressure is on Grayson because they have to live up to the hype. They are a really good team and we will have to play a perfect game but no one is unbeatable. Donnie Miles is off the team and wont be back we sure could use him.

@LoveJoyDad Much respect to LJ High on their win. The AJC and many other bloggers have been selling Region4 and Marietta short all season, just as they have done to LJ. We just took the “fly under the radar” stance. I hope all your guys are healthy as well as ours so we can both be at full strength for the game next week. I don’t know much about the type of offense you all run but it appears to the spread. If so, we seem to be a mirror of each other. Should be an exciting game.

I have to agree with Tide Roll… UGA will never win a national championship as long as Mark Richt is the head coach. Anybody that tries to make a Heisman trophy winning QB into a TE has so many issues on so many levels. Richt can’t keep the top player’s in the nation in the state of GA because of HIS issues. If my fellow Carver-Columbus alum, Jarvis Jones, had not sustained a neck injury and Pete Carroll leaving USC and going to the NFL, UGA would not be in the top 10. Jarvis chose Southern Cal over UGA for a reason. If he wasn’t as home sick as he was when he was in L.A., he would’ve ended up at LSU or Florida. That is the only reason he’s at UGA. These are facts…

Not to offend or disrespect UGA, but Jarvis would never tear down what he has built at UGA by admitting to any of this in public. So, be happy that Jarvis was home sick UGA fans…

I thinkk that Camden was satisfied with the 35-10 score, but #1 decided to play dirty, so Camden continued to score and could have hung 60, but they let the clock run out on the 1 yard line. #1 is very talented, but some of his play leaves something to be desired.

@ kevrock? I’ve asked a dozen people and nobody can tell me what happened to Donnie Miles. I know that he did not get arrested because I checked Gwinnett Mugshots for all of this month and last month…so what the heck happened? This is a HUGE loss, but the fill in CB’s shut down any hopes of
Johns Creek passing Friday so we might be ok. I worry though because Donnie was such a physical presence at CB. We definately would need him to carry the rock a bit against Grayson…oh well best of luck to him and his family.

@ NGHS09 == Yes it can. Lovejoy is more balanced this year than last. Bennifield has grown up and that has enabled the Cats to lead the state in scoring at 44 ppg. They have only played 2 complete games this year. Nine of our 11 games have been played with the running clock. Imagine if they played the whole game. They do not do all the scoring by themselves. Our D scores on a weekly basis. You can call it predictable but it is hard to stop if you don’t have the athletes. Covering our receivers is a hard task. 6′1, 6′4, 6′4, and 6′6. Travis Custis is being Travis. He again has scored20 + Td’s but his yardage is down from last season due to the increase in the passing game and the scores that have been put up.

Sportsnut, As a Packer fan, I hope that you guys go far. I have been reading these blogs all year and you guys get dissed on hard. I was at the Colquitt vs. LJ game and you guys have a good football team. You basically shut us down except for a few big plays that we got 14 points out of. Down in moultrie, we are used to the hate.

I hope the Pack can make a run but I’m afraid our running game is lacking to make a serious run. Ole Rush will have to use his trickery but that only goes so far.

How good is Newnan. Will the Pack have trouble with them?

N5672

November 17th, 2012
8:13 pm

@R31768-

Offensively, they control the ball well. They have a couple of good running backs. In the few games i’ve seen, the starting tailback was huge and when i looked it up, he is on Newnan’s roster as 5′9″ and 245 lbs. and he runs like that. Like a mack truck. The other back also starts in the slot for them so you can tell what kind of skill set he brings. The two outside recievers are more than solid. One of them is Tray Matthews, the prized Georgia safety commit, and the other has made HUGE plays everytime i’ve seen him play and has great ball skills. Apparently their quarterback was injured last week so we’d have to see how that transpires but I heard the backup entered the game and went 5 of 6 and did a pretty good job.

Defensively, they bring alot of talent to the table. They bring an all-american to the table in Georgia S commit Tray Matthews who at 6′2″, 200 lbs. is physically impressive and lays the wood, but surprisingly in my opinion is maybe the third best player on that defense which is saying something. Their MLB is closing in on 100 tackles and consistantly makes plays for them, but the most impressive player to me is the corner that they trot out. Now i’m warning you now, dont let warm-ups fool you. Fans who see #1 in warm-up may want Rush to attack him constantly but this kid is a game changer, especially in big games. I honestly feel like his game is identical to Tyrann Mathieu. I looked it up on Newnan’s roster and the list the kid at 5′6″ so he is probably about 5′5″ but he plays like he is 6′3″. I honestly think he would be the highest ranked corner in GA if he weren’t for his height. Yeah, higher than the Wiggins kid from Sandy Creek. He apparently recorded his 8th interception on Friday. and he has had 4 picks in the last 2 weeks. Which were Newnan-EC (one of the state’s most heated and competitive cross-town rivalries) and the first round playoff game vs. Alcovy. My point? He makes plays in the biggest games. He is great in coverage. His vertical and athleticism allow him to compete with ANY receiver. I saw their scrimmage aganist Griffin and they trotted out an NBA center at WR in the redzone and attacked #1. He intercepted both passes. He is good.

On special teams, the Cougars more than capable of hurting you. In the kicking game, their punt coverage is amazing, they haven’t allowed a return of more than 15 yards all season and the kicker is 12/15 on FG’s. In the return game, #1 once again dominates. He has been amazing in the kick return game and i believe he has at least 3 back for scores. He was back as a punt returner on Friday and shares the role with #16 who does a great job fielding punts for them and actually ran one back on Friday.

The Cougars are scary good. They are trying to go back to their dominance like in 2009 when the Ogletree’s (both at UGA) and Jamal Ransby (GA State) were there and the made it to the Final Four 3 years in a row. Had Newnan not played Sandy Creek, The would have finished (9-1) if not undefeated and region champs because they stuck with Hughes for 2 and 1/2 quarters. and Langston is a darn good team. Newnan should NOT be taken lightly, with that said Colquitt is Colquitt. Newnan will make a dogfight and them being at home, just gives them more advantage.

R31768
