The second season begins

Football season gets considerably more serious this week, as the playoffs begin and every game is do or die.

It’s perhaps toughest for the eight region’s third and fourth playoff seeds, who must travel to face second and first seeds, respectively.

From here on, it’s simple: Win and move on; lose and go home.

These matchups should whet your appetite:

– Wesleyan (4-6) at Calhoun (10-0): As the fourth seed from Region 6-AA, the Wolves face the daunting task of facing unbeaten, defending champion Calhoun on the road, where the 7-AA’s top-seeded Yellow Jackets have won 13 of their 25 straight. Remarkably, Wesleyan is in the playoffs for the first time in two years despite a losing record.

– Bacon County (6-4) at Screven County (9-1): The Gamecocks, top seeded from 3-AA, ride a seven-game win streak into their first playoff appearance in five seasons. Bacon, fourth seeded from 2-AA, hasn’t beaten the Screven in two tries, region meetings in 1996 and ‘97.

– Model (6-4) at Greater Atlanta Christian (7-3): This one should be interesting, especially because 6-AA’s second-seeded Spartans and 7-AA’s third-seeded Model are 1-1 against each other and haven’t met in 17 years.

– Northeast Macon (8-2) at Fitzgerald (8-2): Region 1-AA’s second-seeded Purple Hurricanes embark on a 13th consecutive playoff appearance. The Raiders come in third seeded from 4-AA and having lost the teams’ two meetings nine and 11 years ago, both in the playoffs.

– Bowdon (8-2) at Washington-Wilkes (9-1): This game between the Red Devils, third seeded from 5-AA, and Tigers, second seeded from 8-AA, is a rematch of the first-round matchup in 2009, which Bowdon won 49-35.
