AAAAAA blog: Best five matchups of the first round

Five best first-round games in Class AAAAAA …

Mill Creek (7-3) at Alpharetta (7-3)

- It matches the state’s leading passer in Alpharetta’s Joshua Dobbs and perhaps the state’s best interior defensive lineman in Mill Creek’s Kelsey Griffin. Plus, these teams played last season in an odd game. Mill Creek won 42-7, but didn’t make the playoffs, finishing 5-5. Alpharetta went on to win 5-AAAAA, the school’s first region title.

Milton (7-3) at South Gwinnett (8-2)

- Milton has never won a state playoff game, but this is probably the best team in school history, which dates to the 1950s. DE Carl Lawson (Auburn commit) has more than 20 sacks, and Peyton Barber (Ole Miss) has rushed for more than 1,500 yards. South Gwinnett has bounced back from a 3-7 season and taken the No. 2 seed in Region 8 after beating Parkview and Brookwood in the same season for only the third time in history. Watch for QB Jordan Ramey, who most of his junior season injured but has bounced back to become one of the top passers in this classification.

Colquitt County (7-3) at McEachern (8-2)

- Can Region 1 sweep Region 4?  Colquitt County, ranked No. 9, is a pretty good No. 4 seed. Region 4’s champion, McEachern, is unranked, but also is the hottest team in AAAAAA outside of Grayson and undefeated Norcross and Lassiter. The Indians have won eight straight games after losing to 2011 finalists Grayson and Walton. They haven’t been handles since QB Ty Griffin has been at full health.

Parkview (7-3) at Walton (7-3)

Parkview’s bid for a first region title since 2004 was lost when South Gwinnett kicked a game-winning field in the final seconds of last week’s game. Final score, 16-14. Parkview went from a potential No. 1 seed to the No. 3, which means a road game in the first round. But Parkview would find no small consolation in getting its first playoff victory since 2005. The opponent is walking-wounded Walton, which will be missing Super 11 RB Tyren Jones to a knee injury.

Hillgrove (6-4) at Camden County (9-1)

No one is expecting Hillgrove to win this one. The Maxwell Ratings project Camden as a 29-point winner. But there is intrigue here. Hillgrove defeated Camden County 28-26 in the 2010 second round at Camden in one of the biggest upsets in state history. Camden was the two-time defending of Class AAAAA and ranked No. 1 at the time. Further, Camden’s bid for a 10-0 regular season and unbeaten run through Region 1 this year was upended last week by Colquitt County in a 13-12 loss last week. It could’ve cost Camden a national title. Camden was ranked as high as No. 2 in one poll. Given the history, this is probably not a good time for Hillgrove to visit Kingsland.

@big john – Who’s gonna smoke them? I think every team in the playoffs now has a chance to go all the way; but, Lassiter is a very well coached, balanced, athletic team and I find it hard to believe anyone will smoke them…

May not have mattered against Grayson, but I think McEachern would have beaten Walton if Griffin had been healthy and played. I think they could be a final 4 team. My only issue with McEachern is while watching the game against Walton on TV is they had a defensive back get tossed for head-hunting after he did it a second time in the first half. He should have been tossed after the first one. I did not care for his celebratory display after getting tossed, nor the fans cheering him, nor the McEachern coaching staff for not correcting him. Maybe it was a 1 time thing and they have worked on proper tackling techniques since then so I try to keep an open mind. But if you draw McEachern, advise the zebras about this guy before the game starts.

I have seen both Colquitt and Mceachern play and i think this will be a really good game. I’m leaning toward Mceachern because i believe Colquitt may have a little letdown after beating Camden and i believe almost everyone is underestimating Mceachern.

It’s not listed here as a best matchup but i will not be surprised if North Cobb beats Valdosta. The Cats haven’t been a very good playoff team in recent years.

As for the games listed here i will go
Mill Creek over Alpharetta
South GW over Milton
Parkview over Walton since TJ is not playing
Mceachern over Colquitt
Camden big over Hillgrove in a revenge game

No disrespect meant to Alpharetta or Milton, i haven’t seen either team except in highlights
im just going off the history, normally the football programs aren’t quite as strong as some other regions.

I only saw Dobbs from Alpharetta on TV for the first time last Friday. He looks like the type of QB that can keep his team in any game. I have not seen Mill Creek but a couple folks on this blog indicated their size in the trenches would be too much for Alpharetta. Part of me would like to see Alpharetta win to set up a Lassiter/Printz vs Alpharetta/Dobbs second round shootout. But as a Lassiter fan maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

As for Milton, they have a lot of good players but have not risen to the occasion against the heavyweights in their region (Lassiter/Walton). I would have thought an offense with 3 D1 O-linemen and 2 D1 running backs would have been tougher to keep in check but both Lassiter and Walton did just that. I watched the South GW/Parkview game (yes both at same time on 2 different TVs in the man cave) and the South GW defense is probably a bit more stout than Lassiter & Walton. And despite Milton having 1 good pass rusher, you can throw on that secondary. Milton is good but not ready for prime time.

Grayram…. As a fellow ram, I have to disagree with you on the Colquitt/MAC match up. Colquitt comes to play during the play offs. History has proven that. Last years team lost 5 games and gave up 70 points to that Mississippi team during the regular season and almost knocked off our Rams. I predict Colquitt blowing out MAC, but eventually losing out in the later rounds. I am going with Norcross in that bracket. Norcross VS Grayson final. No disrespect to the others, but I think Norcross is for real.

I think the first 4 games listed are probably toss ups and I will be surprised if there is more than a 7-10 point spread (if that) in any of them. I guess it will depend on which team comes to play for each game. The Hillgrove-Camden game could be interesting. Hillgrove has been there and beat Camden before. Camden is fired up after losing to Colquitt and I think it might get ugly for HG. Camden by about as many as they care to put up. Sorry HG fans, I just don’t think it will happen for you this year.

@Falconguy45 – Colquitt didn’t lose 5 last year, it was the year before. Last year they were 11-3 with the final loss being to us. You may be experiencing a local time warp. ;-) I’ve seen the Packers go both ways and look very, very good and not so good. (Sounds like another team we know, huh!) I really think McEachern has a very good team this year as well. Like I said earlier, I don’t know which team wins but I’ll be surprised if it is more than a 7-10 point differential.

Dobbs can win a game by himself! Not really, but he can definitely keep his team in any game. I would love to see a rematch of Alpharetta vs. Lassiter. Last year it went into overtime. It’s a tough game for coaches since they know each other well. Run the same offense and similar defense. But Printz has proven that if he is hot he can take them far. I doubt their defense is as strong as last year, but Danforth is a grown man/Tasmanian devil type.

Unless Grayson runs up on someone who can get up on them and force them to throw it, it’ll be tough to beat them. Definitely looking forward to seeing what Cecil Flowe can do this year. Don’t count Rush out, as well. It’s gonna be a good post season. I predict a dark horse will make it to the Dome, from there anything can happen. Parody would be good for 6a….

Alpharetta over Mill Creek

Milton over South Gwinnett

McEachern over Colquitt County (McEachern has a lot of team speed….probably 1 of the fastest teams in the state)

Parkview over Walton

North Cobb over Valdosta (blow out style)

A good time for Lassiter to show what it has against Gwinnett competition. Brookwood has given up 42 points twice in a row. Can Lassiter top that? Not that Brookwood will win, but it should be an interesting way for Lassiter to make a statement.

If there’s any game I’d love to see tomorrow night, it would be McEachern hosting Colquitt. McEachern has lost these in the past against far more mediocre teams than Colquitt. Right after that Valdosta at North Cobb. Let us find out what these top seeded Cobb County teams are all about, and in the process, 1-AAAAAA will either be great, as some have so proudly and repetitively claimed, . . . or not.

Sportsnut……I attended 12 Walton games in 2011 and about 6-7 this year. They had good team speed in 2011. This year, they are pretty slow as a team. Tyren (who isn’t playing) and DJ Smith have good speed.

Parkview can’t pass. QB will bootleg – that’s their best play. The strength of the team is defense, slow or not, and the offensive line for the run. I’ve never been a believer, however. Stack the box, as Norcross had to have done, and Parkview can be beaten.

The day of reckoning is finally here! After this weekend, half of the playoff teams will be headed home to start basketball season. The smack talking from the regular season will be a thing of the past for some. Only a handful of the faithful will remain. Who will hoist the Title Trophy in Class 6A? Will it be Camden, Grayson, Lowndes, Lassiter, Colquitt, Norcross or a surprise dark horse that shocks everyone? Will the Gwinnett Teams lay claim to another 6A Title or will Region 1 step up and turn the tide? Will a Cobb or Dekalb Team make it’s presence felt? No one knows for sure, so stay tuned. The answers to these questions start tonight! If you have a weak constitution, maybe you should leave the comments section prior to tonight’s games.
