Schools with the longest current streaks of reaching the playoffs

Three Class A schools with playoff streaks of 15 or more years could be at the end of their rope on Tuesday, when the GHSA is expected to determine the teams that qualified for the postseason under the new points plan. Charlton County (5-5), Commerce (5-5) and Clinch County (4-6) each lost last week and will drop in the standings. Charlton was eighth, Commerce 11th and Clinch 14th going into their final games. Here are the longest streaks of making the state playoffs – if those three teams survive:

31 – Lincoln County

23 – Carrollton

*22 – Charlton County

22 – Camden County

22 – Peach County

21 – Thomas Co. Central

19 – Marist

17 – Northside (Warner Robins)

16 – Athens Academy

16 – East Coweta

*16 – Clinch County

*15 – Commerce

*Does not include possible 2012 berth.

Marist has made the playoffs now for 29 straight seasons. The last year that Marist played only the 10 regular season games was 1982. The discrepancy with the list above is that prior to our current state playoff system, the 11th game of the season was a region playoff game, rather than what is now the first round of the “state” playoffs. If you want to compare apples to apples, I think you need to include in the streak the years that teams played in an 11th game in the region playoff, prior to the current state playoff format.

@ War Eagle

Q: Was it a STATE playoff game?
A; If the answer is no, then the above posting is correct. Get over it.

@dougmo2 — read the headline: “Schools with the longest current streaks of reaching the playoffs”. Was it a playoff game? Yes. Get over it? Jeez, just clarifying that today’s first round “state” playoff games essentially were called “region” playoff games previously. Really not a big deal, and certainly not worth your being a jerk. Get over yourself.

I just noticed my Johnson (Sav) AtomSmashers in the state playoffs. I honestly can’t remember the last time they went to a state playoff game in football, maybe in the 60’s before integration? If this research could be done, it would probably be interesting.

It’s good see the schools in Savannah finally acknowledging their school sizes and competing against similar sized schools. Getting beat by Camden County every year in football was getting old.

Johnson was last in the playoffs in 2008. Lost to Newnan in a 1st Round game.

@Ernest: I went back and looked at the GHSA record books and found that a public schools from Sav has never won a state title in football since records were established in 1947. Savannah Country Day won the title in 1969. Not sure if they were public?

Thanks to all that responded to my earlier comment! Savannah teams were known more for basketball than football over the years. Beach was the first predominately black school to win in bball during the first year of integration. Coach Russell Ellington was the coach. His son and namesake passed recently also.

Savannah Country Day is a private school.

Agree with WarEagle. The headline says “reaching the playoffs”. That means ANY bonus games played after the regular season. Example. The Atlanta Braves made it to a one game playoff this year.

@ Class A Wizard……Lincoln Co. would be exiting the playoffs as soon as ELCA got a hold of them too, that is, if their coach wouldn’t have cried and cried till he got what he wanted !!!! No matter how far Lincoln goes, there will be an asterisk beside their name for weaseling their way out of a BUTT WHOOPIN from ELCA !!!!
