Class AAAA playoff primer

Farewell regular season. It was good to know ye. Now the real fun starts. Here are some odds, ends and musings on the Class AAAA brackets:

Toughest bracket: The GHSA didn’t name or otherwise designate the bracket sections, so I will. The toughest is the Southwest Regional, (so designated because it’s on the bottom left portion of the bracket on the GHSA website). Three of the top five teams in the GHSF Daily final regular-season rankings are there – No. 1 Sandy Creek, No. 3 Burke County and No. 5 Griffin. It also features 9-1 Carver and running back Montravious Taylor and Eastside, which just ripped previously unbeaten Monroe Area 35-0. One of those top five teams will be out after the second round.

De ja vu: Jonesboro traveled to Albany and played Westover on Sept. 7. Sparked by a 75-yard kickoff return by Patrick Petty, the Cardinals overcame an early deficit and won 34-12. The Cardinals get to make the trip again this week with their season on the line.

Most likely 4th seed to advance: Notice I didn’t say best fourth seed. I think that’s Eastside, but the Eagles face the steepest uphill battle in AAAA with a first-round game at Sandy Creek. The fourth seed that appears most likely to advance is Riverdale. The Raiders enter the playoffs having won three of four.

They played No. 6 Jonesboro within a touchdown and seem to have smoothed out the defensive kinks that showed up in the middle of the season.

Best potential first-round pairing of quarterbacks: Shaw and Chandler Whittlesey visit Monroe Area and Stanton Truitt, who missed the final three games of the regular season with an ankle injury. Potential because Truitt is questionable to play this week. Whittlesey has given opponents fits for most of the year, and with him making plays the Raiders were within 31-26 of Sandy Creek in the third quarter on Oct. 12. They’re the only team that has scored 20 against the Patriots.

One score away club: Five teams in AAAA finished 9-1 and within one score of either winning or tying in their loss. Burke lost 21-14 to Thomson, which is expected to make noise in AAA. Marist lost 21-17 to AAAAA mainstay Thomas County Central. Ridgeland lost 42-35 to Calhoun, the odds-on favorite in AA.

The most initeresting of the group are Griffin and Jonesboro. Griffin beat Jonesboro 34-33 in a big fourth-quarter comeback that was the Cardinals’ only loss. The Bears lost two weeks later to Stockbridge on a buzzer-beating field goal. It was a game in which Griffin was out-played but clawed even with a fourth-quarter score. Reverse either of those two results, and the AAAA brackets look different. Griffin, for instance, would avoid a potential second-round matchup against Burke County if they’d beaten Stockbridge.

And finally, predictions to make the semifinal round: In the aforementioned Southwest Regional, Sandy Creek and Burke advance to the quarters, where the Patriots win a nail-biter. In the Northwest Regional, Monroe Area beats Jonesboro in a quarterfinal shootout. In the Northeast, Vonn Bell and Ridgeland make the semis with a win over Mary Persons. In the Southeast, Marist survives a second round scare against Carrollton then handles Stockbridge to earn a semifinal berth.

Look for Sandy Creek to steam roll Eastside by 5 touchdowns and I’m being generous.

Don’t dismiss the Carrollton Trojans so quickly; their three losses came againt two # 1 ranked teams and a ranked team in Alabama’s largest classification. Don’t be surprised if you see Sandy Creek/Carrollton, round two, in the Dome!

@woodpecker.. Dont ever doubt Mr. Green and his ability.. Burke County will meet the Creek.. Griffin doesnt have a chance against a very physical Burke County team. Who wins between BC and the Creek… Im not able to make that guess. Sandy Creek is awesome but, I will never pick against my alma mater.

Burke County will face Sandy Creek and this should be a close tough game. My Bears are fast and should give Sandy Creek their toughest game of the season. No disrespect to Griffin, the game will be over by halftime. Keep on bashing the Bears the same way you did last year the end result, AAA state champions. Our strength and conditioning program make up for what we lack in size in a few key positions. My prediction Burke County over Perry by 40 points, Griffin by 21 and Sandy Creek by 7. The real high school football season is about to start. Go Bears!!!!!!!!!!

Any team can lose on a given Friday night… Sandy Creek has size and speed so they will be a tough out. I will never underestimate Griffin because they always come to play.
I love Gator Green, but I think it will take the talent around him coming up big if Burke has a chance of making it out of this bracket

I wouldn’t be surprised if Carrollton earns a rematch with Sandy Creek. That’s an extremely tough second-round draw, though.

@ Bird dog keep dreaming partner, keep hoping that Griffin loses not happening. In order to be the best you have to beat the best. So once we bounce that team from Albany we welcome the challenge of the 2nd and 3rd round whomever that may be Burke Co. or Sandy Creek. Griffin’s does not fear no one. Keep sleeping on the Grip.. You have to play the game, talk is cheap!!

Burke Co. have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, but as we all know defense wins championships. SC front four is unstoppable and their linabackers are superfast and their corners give the best run support in the state. SC was young and and inexperience with a first year starter at QB six new starters on defense. I watch some of BC game film and do a lot of running up the middle. No disrespect I can’t see BC beating SC.

I’m a BC Bear stuck in VA for the next few years. This years state champion will come from the SC, BC side of the brackets. Burke is young this year with only a few seniors. They lost a grip from last years squad but played so many they reloaded. Next years squad should be even better as everybody returns.

Burke County is more than one great pllayer, just because Green has scored 28 touchdowns to date, there are a LOT of other players stepping up and doing their fair share. The Thomson game was a fluke. Thomson didn’t win it, Burke County gave it away. Perry this weekend will get squashed. Really enjoyed all the great roadtrips last year, One game at a time, When Burke wins state this year, they will be undefeated next year.

Do not understand why Carrollton wants more of Sandy Creek.
They looked like a bunch of hackers week and a half ago.

I agree that Carrollton did not play to their potential against Sandy Creek but If you remember UGA
” looked like a bunch of hackers” against South Carolina too but look what they have done since then.

Burke county has the best playermaker n the state(Gator Green) u can stack the box u can simulate n practice what u think u r gonna c but until u get across the field and get a taste of true speed combined with true talent will u understand why even after we lost the majority of our starters we r still the team u dont want to face.

Gator this, Gator that. I went to two of BC’s games this season, one of which they pounded on AAAAAA Coffee County. Yes, Gator Green is off the chain, but let’s not try to keep all the focus on him. Burke has talent on both sides of the ball. I even witness the entire 9th grade team come out and play most of the 2nd half and dominate the opponents first string. All I gotta say is, last year was last year, this is 2012, and every game is not the same. Never know whats bound to happen. So, after BC triumphs over Griffin, we will see ya in the Creek!!!

Oh yeah having an explosive offense is just a bonus.

Woodpecker, I watched Sandy Creek and Carrollton on GPB and I must admit Creek look pretty good. the Trojans made some costly mistakes on special teams which help put Creek in good field position. I was amazed at all the talent they have on offense. The two Sophomore backs look awesome and they have good wide receivers. If BC Bears meet Creek we will have to play a flawless game to beat them. I do believe our offense is better than Carrollton and we should be able to put up points. If we meet it should be a great game and Creek have a bunch of players that will be playing on Saturday. Two more days until kick off.

OK, I WAS WRONG. BURKE DID NOT WIN BY FORTY POINTS. I SHOULD HAVE SAID WILL SCORE AT LEAST 40. AND DONQUELL GREEN DIDN’T GET 3 TOUCHDOWNS, HE GOT FOUR
AND THREW FOR ANOTHER. HIS 40+ YARD INTERCEPTION RUN WAS GREAT, BUT HIS 98 YARD KICK RETURN FOR A TOUCHDOWN WAS UNREAL. HE NOW HAS 32 RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS. OH, HE ALSO RAN IN 3 PAs. AND THEN MONROE, THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER
TALENTED PLAYERS. YEP, ONE GAME AT A TIME. “COME ON BURKE COUNTY” !!!
