They’re celebrating in Quitman

Alas, Brooks County football players accomplished what their predecessors couldn’t.

With Friday night’s 43-14 Region 1-AA win over Berrien, the Trojans completed their school’s first 10-0 regular season, taking a step beyond the 9-1 effort of 2008, when this year’s Trojans were in middle school.

Next comes the now nine-time region champions’ attempt to exceed that year’s semifinals playoff appearance and duplicate the school’s state championship of 1994.

Here are other newsworthy bits from Friday:

– Talk about turnarounds: Coosa, the 7-AA team that languished with an 0-5 start this season, completed a 4-1 second half of the year to squeak into the postseason as that region’s fourth seed. Denver Penney’s three touchdown passes and running back Dequaylon Dennis’ three scores capped off the decisive 41-14 victory over Murray County, according to the Rome News-Tribune.

– Can anyone stop Calhoun?: With a 49-14 demolition of Chattooga, the defending AA champion Yellow Jackets have won 25 straight since losing the 2010 state championship. Remarkably, the top-ranked Jackets are 65-5 in their run toward at least a fifth straight championship game appearance.

– Lovett keeps hanging around: The No. 10 Lions, who remained ranked despite four consecutive losses in the middle of the season, further proved their resilience by winning a fourth straight and clinching the 6-AA championship with a 31-30 victory over Greater Atlanta Christian. The Lions overcame a 17-7 deficit with 17 straight points and clinched the victory by blocking an extra-point kick late.

– Model’s back in the dance: The 7-AA Blue Devils (6-4) are in the playoffs for the first time since finishing 5-6 in 2003 and are riding their first winning season since going 6-4 in 1999. “This is a no-fear team,” Devils coach Gordon Powers told the News-Tribune following Friday’s 41-21 defeat of Dade County. “It’s good to see some validation of what we’re doing.”

– Seems Jefferson’s picking up steam: With Friday’s 42-7 win over Union County, their ninth straight, the 8-AA champion Dragons now have held six straight opponents to 10 or fewer points. That 22-7 season-opening loss to Commerce seems distant, now that the No. 9 Dragons have outscored their last six foes 42-5 on average.

You may need some Arm and Hammer backing soda to deal with all the stings you get from Yellow Jackets in Calhoun. Congratulations to Brooks County on a 10-0 Regular season and hope we both make it to the 3rd round. And that Calhoun wins the coin toss if we’re both there.

I totally agree @ jvillbil and @ CalhounJacketDad you guys dont play real football you guys will see us in the 3rd round hopefully and you guys don’t have as much pressure on yall. Let me asked do you think we’ve not looked at the tape when they took the chance to play Buford away and said we didn’t score that touchdown and the referee said he didn’t score well its been a sour tase in our mouth the same as Valdosta not wanting to play us because we are a 2AA school but guess what we haven’t forgotten……………………………………….

If region 1 is so tough how come they have not made the finals in the last 4 years? Seems like Calhoun playe them each year.

Why no love for vidalia in your blog? 10-0 and I rarely see them mentioned. But you talk about a 6-4 team?

Calhoun and Brooks County better both worry about their first round opponents before they start planning a rematch in the third round. Looking ahead is a recipe for defeat. In the playoffs, all the teams are good and overconfidence is a killer. I can guarantee that both coaches will emphasize this point before Friday. You can’t play worrying about next week or the week after. At this point it’s win or go home.

You can say what you want about the region we play in. We can’t help that Calhoun is located waay up here in North Ga. But let the record show that when the playoffs roll around and you have to play the tough teams, we hold our own pretty good. We have went deep in the playoffs now for the last decade and are now stranger to playing on the road, no matter if it is in south Ga., or the Ga. Dome…You better come ready to play because you know we will!!!! P.S. Please learn to spell and punctuate if you are going to exhaust the effort to post. RBHS

Trojan4Life and YellerJacketz1,

I am talking to players, because some of the players (and coaches) read these blogs. I’ve got a lot of coaching experience at the high school and lower levels and I can tell you that kids have a tendency to get overconfident when they read all the media hype about who is supposed to play whom and who is going to win.

I’m just saying that you can bet that both the Calhoun staff and the Brooks County staff will tell their players not to even begin thinking about each other until week three of the playoffs. You have to win weeks one and two to have a shot. Many teams have went down looking ahead. I don’t want that to happen for either team. I want to see Calhoun and Brooks County play because I believe they are the two best teams in AA.

I highly appreciate your respect for both teams and that’s one thing I can agree with you on I’d that coach freeman will not let them look ahead. And I think they are both the best teams in AA.

Lol are you serious dude your not sure we play in the most intense region in AA do try to take nothing away but yeah we as fans are looking ahead and want a rematch with Calhoun cause of this that goaline play and the end of that game in 2008……..

That play in 2008 was caused because the REF called the back down, HE WAS DOWN, and he jump up and threw the ball, should have lined up for another play. Last year ??? So what was the excuse ?

Jefferson

Brooks had a good chance to win that game in 2008. Get mad at the ref, if you want to get mad, still if the ball was put back in play their chances were good.

One thing I’m not mad. Just that we have been basically over looked so we want our revenge simple as that you guys get on here and talk much trash when that shouldn’t even be the case I only said we want them because of what the Refs did not blaming Calhoun hell I rooted for the to beat buford and was glad they did. And also since you running your mouth Buford was recruiting players that why they won many state championship guess they got tired of Charlton County and when Charlton Co. was dominating AA in the playoffs who they where they playing every season us Calhoun has been consitent in the past 5 years before that the haven’t did nothing since his dad was coach.

Lets see I think Brooks came to Calhoun last year and had it handed to them. Also Calhoun played their second string in the second half and Brooks County kept their first team in to make score respectable. Final was 49 to 20 or something like that. Is my memory correct?

Calhoun has been in 5 of the last 10 finals, how many of the last 10 had region 1 teams in the finals. Lots of final 8’s , but not the big one. Buford is still a good team this year too.

Brooks Co. Beat Fitzgerald in the last few seconds of the game! We in Fitzgerald are having a down year and still they barely beat us. It’s the playoff’s and every week is a new challenge! And Calhoun don’t count your chickens before they hatch! One week at a time!!!!!

Im gonna make it short and simple I feel strongly region 1 will sweep the 1st rounds of the playoffs and don’t be surprise this year if the semi-finals/state championship be an all 1-AA affair yes these 4 teams loses are mainly to each other and these 4 teams of Brooks, Cook,Early, & Fitzgerald are just that good to pull it off for 1-AA this year.

Well @ Jacketaxe come on we don’t get respect in Region 1 AA point blank nobody including Cook, Fizgerald, Early not only Brooks dude we play football no matter who you are and where you from I wish we played you guys go check the books. Like I said before you guys even came back in the picture us small AA schools down here where dominating AA. Like I said before Buford and you guys since like 06 in the playoffs who won the championships. l bout to show you though make valid pont yall wasn’t know for nothing ya’ll won a region title in 50 and 51 then you guys won a state title in 52 then nothing else until a region title in 95 now you guys gone on a 6 yr slide and have won region titles in a weak region with 1 maybe 2 teams over .500 since 2001 with one more state title in 2011. And out of those 11 yrs we missed the playoffs twice lost to the go on to win state title holder like 5 times. You guys made the playoffs every year but only made it to the dome 2 twice prior to 2009 and when ya’ll got put out the playoffs since 2001 the teams that put ya’ll out was mostly a region 1 school remember Cook, Early, Etc…………. I give you guys props and so should we but we don’t need to get them we earn them. And when you want more point stats and everything else just let me know I give you the run down……..
