AAAAAA blog: #1 Camden falls … Grayson wins region after all … South Gwinnett denies Parkiew … Check out the playoff draw

Four newsworthy happenings from Friday –

- No. 1 Camden County goes down – Camden had clinched a No. 1 seed in the state playoffs, but don’t think the Wildcats didn’t want to beat Colquitt County to run the table in their first season in vaunted Region 1. Instead, it was 10th-ranked Colquitt pulling the upset, 13-12. John Boatright’s 3-yard run in the fourth quarter and the ensuing extra point gave Colquitt the final margin in the final minute. Camden missed an extra point and later a two-point conversion and then a desperate 55-yard field goal in the final seconds. Camden County was ranked in the top five of four national polls with a high of No. 2 in the CNN/SI rankings. The seedings for the state playoffs in Region 1 remained the same. Camden is No. 1 and will play at home against Hillgrove, and Colquitt is No. 4 and will play on the road at McEachern.

- South Gwinnett denies Parkview’s Region 8 title – South Gwinnett upset No. 9 Parkview 16-14 on a field goal in the final seconds. Parkview (7-3) could’ve clinched its first region title since 2004. Parkview drove for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, but South Gwinnett (8-2) had the final say and wound up with the No. 2 seed in Region 8 and a home playoff game next week. Parkview fell to No. 3 in the region standings and must travel in the first round.

- Grayson wins Region 8 after all – Grayson, the 2011 champion of AAAAA and the preseason No. 1 in AAAAAA, fell out of the Top 10 briefly after a 22-7 loss to Parkview on Sept. 7. Since then, the Rams have taken it out on seven straight opponents, winning by average of 48-7. They gave Brookwood a taste o it 42-13 on Friday. But Grayson still needed Parkview to lose twice to claim the region title. Parkview slipped to Central Gwinnett 30-27 on Oct. 26, then to South Gwinnett. The drama of Robert Nkemdiche’s de-commit from Clemson wasn’t a factor Friday night. The Grayson defensive end and running back rushed for 74 yards and had two sacks.

- Playoff teams nearly set – Except for Region 5, the four state-playoff teams from each region are set. Valdosta eliminated Coffee in Region 1 with an impressive 44-8 victory. … Rockdale County took Region 2’s fourth playoff berth with an 18-14 victory over Druid Hills. … Tri-Cities took the final playoff berth in Region 3 with a victory over Douglas County. … Wheeler apparently made it in Region 5 despite talk of mini-games. … South Cobb has a small chance of slipping in from Region 4, but Hillgrove got the fourth seed despite losing to region champ McEachern 33-30. Hillgrove will travel to angry Camden County in the first round. Make that doubly angry Camden. Hillgrove stunned No. 1-ranked Camden on the road in the second round in 2010.

@57Cat – Looking at Google maps/Earth, it looks like North Cobb might seat 1,200 tops. I think I counted 10 rows but there might be 11. Small stadium for sure. Just Google North Cobb High School and click on the map. Looks like parking will be a challenge as well.

@5-Time – Same thing for Lovejoy so far as looking at the stadium. Looks like 20 rows, 2,100-2,300 per side or so. I’m sure sportnuts will have a better answer.

Google maps is a powerful tool! :-D

@bksmith14 – Why don’t you tell us what you really think? :-D I’m glad you have your opinion of their polls but I think I might stick with the people that do this for a living and have access to better resources. They’re not perfect and I bet they don’t claim to be. Chip and Todd do a real good job tracking the teams across the state in 5A & 6A and the other guys cover the other classifications. I can vouch for one of them in particular that doesn’t cover our class.

BK stands for “Beyond Krazy”…what a goofball.

I heard from a reliable source that he is Lowndes’ “Radio” like the poor kid in the movie.

Fred and BK: I think Chip and Todd can look at these rankings without emotion. That’s something we fans can’t do, and that’s why we often disagree.

That’s not nice, The Cross. For all you know, he may very well be the Forrest Gump of Lowndes.

Grayram-Bk listed his picks just above your last post. It is a shocker but Bk picks an all Region 1 Final Four and maybe Grayson slips in there.

Fred….Thanks for the info. Lovejoy’s stadium is Lame!! I don’t know. . . Maybe I’m just spoiled by the TitleTown’s H.S. Football Stadiums and their wonderful fanbase that I couldn’t settle for a stadium of that size and stature….Just saying….

If Colqutt plans to beat McEachern, they’d better shore up the middle of their pass defense! They can be exploited down the middle…… :-)

Grayram-That is the extent of Bk’s picks. He won’t/can’t pick a game unless a region 1 team is involved. Last year he picked Coffee over Grayson and they were not even in the tourney. He loses focus as he has to continually stop pushing his shopping cart to readjust his transistor radio.

@Marietta Fan: Good news – Hillgrove now has visitor seats. So next year how’bout traveling the three miles and filling them up? Marietta fans do a great job filling their stadium for home game but do not travel well.

I find it amazing. I think it was either last year or the year before. Colquitt finished the regular season 5-5. And went on to loose in the championship game. But everyone on this blog complained and stated how a team that finished with a 500 recorded or loosing recorded shouldn’t be in the playoffs. And this year we have 4. Yes 4 teams with a loosing record. Alcovy 4-6, rockdale 3-7, east coweta 4-6 and tri cities 4-6. And I can’t believe it no body from Atlanta is complaining that there is teams with a loosing record in the playoffs. Go figure. If you are south of the Gnat line you better have a winning record. But north of the Gnat line the northern teams are soooo good that a team or teams with loosing records can and will make it in the playoffs. I guess we good ole boys from the south will sit back and smile. As all four of these teams go out in the first round. The games won’t even be close. But the southern football teams now that a southern team with a loosing/500 record is a force to be reckoned with. As colquitt has already shown.

@ 5-Time == We do have a relatively small stadium. It will hold maybe 5-7 grand with temp. seating. We are a small town. Only about 6,500 people. You may be correct about attendance. The majority of our fans will be family and outsiders who come to see high school football playoffs because it is near them. Ware, and Warner Robins filled the visitors side last season with no problem.

@ 5-Time == What makes a stadium lame ? I think you will enjoy watching a game at 12 Oaks. This is a county stadium. None of the Clayton schools have what can be called their own except Lovejoy and Drew. We have no control over any of it. !2 Oaks is on Lovejoys campus and Southern Crescent is at Drew. There are only 3 stadiums for schools to use. The stadium serves as a primary home for Mundy’s Mill and Lovejoy. Tara Stadiun, in Jonesboro is used by Jonesboro, Mt. Zion, Morrow and Riverdale. Southern Crescent is home to North Clayton and Drew. We share. We have been guest on our campus.

Man just watched a replay of the game and Colquitt has a great team! I can see them going pretty far in the playoffs. I hope Camden is ready for Hillgrove. I hear they have a great team as well
