East Paulding-Allatoona showdown to decide 5-AAAAA title

The only game in the state this weekend matching 9-0 teams takes place at the Boneyard in Dallas on Friday when third-ranked East Paulding hosts No. 5 Allatoona to decide the Region 5-AAAAA championship.

Both teams have offenses and defenses that rank in the top 10 in Class AAAAA. Allatoona relies on two 1,000-yard rushers in Josh Bettistea (1,103 yards) and T.J. Herron (1,038). The Buccaneers score 37.6 points per game while allowing 13.6. East Paulding has two good backs of its own in Kamani Thomas (1,428) and Kyler Neal (825), and quarterback Mitchell Webb has passed for 1,135 yards and 17 TDs. The Raiders are averaging 44.4 points per game and allowing 9.2. It’s worth noting that those numbers have been compiled against the same nine opponents as the 11-team region has played a full round-robin schedule.

The winner will open the playoffs next week at home against Clarke Central, the No. 4 seed from Region 8. The loser will host Heritage of Conyers.

But the Region 5 title isn’t the only one that will be determined on Friday. Here are three other games in which the top two teams from a region will square off to decide the championship:

*Harris County at Thomas County Central (1-AAAAA): Harris County has never won a region title, and the prospects didn’t look good this season when the Tigers opened with four consecutive losses. But Harris County beat Douglas County in three overtimes in its final non-region game and then won four consecutive region games (three by a touchdown or less) to set up the winner-take-all battle with Thomas County Central. The Yellow Jackets have won 11 region titles, with the most recent one coming in 2009.

*Effingham County at Ware County (3-AAAAA): Effingham County got off to a similar slow start, losing its first two games by 20 points each to Class AA schools Benedictine and Screven County. But coach Rick Tomberlin and the Rebels rallied to win six of their next seven and need just one more victory to claim the school’s first region title since 1995. Ware County was expected to be in this position, and the Gators haven’t disappointed, winning eight straight since a close loss to AAAAAA Coffee in the opener.

*Gainesville at Flowery Branch (8-AAAAA): Gainesville’s almost inexplicable loss to Loganville last week didn’t take anything away from this showdown. A victory over their rival would give the Red Elephants their fifth consecutive region title and 29th overall. Flowery Branch tied for first place in the region last season but ended up as the No. 3 seed on the tiebreaker, so a victory against Gainesville would give the Falcons their first outright region title in the program’s 11-year history.

The Allatoona/E. Paulding game may turn into a real classic. To demonstrate how deep Allatoona is at running back, Quentin James, a D-1 recruit at tailback, transferred from N. Cobb to Allatoona and now he is playing defensive end. Short of returning kicks, he hasn’t carried the ball once for the Bucs.

EP vs Allatoona

I think this game is going to come down to Mitchell Webb and that gives EP the edge. It will be a good game. I see Maxwell Projections has EP by 8.

The Branch will be ROCKING Friday night.

I think FBHS has advantages in virtually every aspect, but Deshaun Watson is the great equalizer. How he performs and how FBHS defends him will determine the outcome.

Go Falcons!

Given the talent at RB in this game on both sides of the ball I think it really will put the pressure on both defenses to wrap-up, pursue and gang tackle because none of them go down easily.

I think East has played the run slightly better to this point as North put over 430 yds of offense up against Allatoona and only mustered 180 against East.

I like others think that Mr Webb at QB for East makes all the difference. 17 TD passes and only 1 INT. That is fantastic at any level. His running abilities are rarely need but excellent also. I’m guessing Toona coaches will have a good game plan but know East is an extremely dangerous team and they they will need to play their best game just to keep it close.

Looks like the the winner will get Tucker in the 2nd round. Looking ahead to the quarter finals, if East makes it that far. They will again face another team with lots of tradition in Ware County if both teams make it that far. The swamp is a very special and tough place to play, I’m hoping Ware will have to travel to the Boneyard if they both end up seeing each other in the quarterfinals. I absolutely love the playoffs, so much history and tradition that surrounds a lot of teams, I just love it.

Do we know if the Altoona (sic) vs. EP game will be online anywhere? Doesn’t look like it warranted gpbtv coverage…they are covering two Gwinnett Cty games, go figure!

Slow down buddy. There is a ton of football before that, starting with the game tonight. Lets not get ahead if ourselves. All we know is .. Allatoona tonight and a round one home game against either Clarke Central or Heritage-Conyers. One at a time.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE EAST PAULDING RAIDERS!!!

UNDEFEATED SEASON!!! REGION 5 AAAAA CHAMPIONS!!!

ALLATOONA, who had jumped from AAA last year to AAAAA this year, came into “THE BONEYARD” at 9 / 0 last night. This was a game we had all been waiting on pretty much from the 1st game this season. The ALLATOONA fans FILLED the visitor’s side and spilled over with folks standing on the fences. GOOD JOB “TOONA” fans that’s how you show the kid’s you appreciate their hard work…

Facing “TOONA” was the UNDEFEATED EAST PAULDING RAIDERS also at 9 / 0…this game was for all the marbles! The 2012 REGION 5 AAAAA CHAMPIONSHIP! & the #1 SEED in the playoffs!

With FOX 5 “HIGH FIVE” & Bill Hartman in the house along with COMCAST XFINITY doing a tape delay that will be available “on demand” the excitement level was over the top!!! EAST won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half…the ball was set, the CANNON fired it’s first shot of the night and BOOOOOM!!!! it was ON!!!!

EAST scored first to go up 7 / 0 then added a 2nd TD but “Mr. Automatic” actually missed the extra point! Everyone was going “HUH”!!! That just doesn’t happen! Score was 13 / 0 and with the “D” stepping up ALL NIGHT, ALLATOONA couldn’t score…”TOONA” made several long clock eating drives but couldn’t finish until the 3:35 mark of the 4th quarter when they threw a pass into the corner of the endzone for their only score of the night!

EAST had a TD called back due to a block in the back (it was a good call) and a missed FG or the score could have been 35+ but at the end of the night as the CANNON fired to signal the victory, the COACH got doused with the water cooler and EAST had it’s 2nd REGION CHAMPIONSHIP in school history.

EAST PAULDING RAIDERS 25 / ALLATOONA 7!!!

EAST gets CLARKE CENTRAL next week in “THE BONEYARD” and ALLATOONA has HERITAGE / CONYERS coming to them….REGROUP “TOONA” and take care of business next week!!!

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
GO RAIDERS!!!
