Two region titles on the line

The Class AA football playoffs don’t begin until next week, but things might reach a fever pitch this week at Bowdon and Lovett.

Bowdon takes on Heard County for the Region 5-AA championship, and Lovett hosts Greater Atlanta Christian for the 6-AA crown.

“We’re excited about having an opportunity to play (at home) this week, and there in the playoffs,” Lovett coach Mike Muschamp said. “But any time you get to play for a region championship, you’re excited for your kids, parents and the whole program.”

Here’s a glance at the classification’s two championship games and a few other intriguing matchups, too:

– Heard County (9-0, 7-0) at Bowdon (8-1, 6-1): Duranta Dunson rushed for 153 yards, Tori Rogers 108 and Qua Reid 103 in the unbeaten Braves’ 54-28 demolition of Spencer last week. Bowdon has ripped off four straight wins since losing to Manchester in Game 5.

– GAC (7-2, 3-0) at Lovett (5-4, 3-0): The No. 5 Spartans come in perfect in region, having beaten Wesleyan 42-20 last week by breaking open a 14-14 game with four consecutive touchdowns. No. 10 Lovett takes the field perfect in region, too, thanks to last week’s 10-7 win against Westminster, clinched by Willie Candler’s 30-yard scoring pass to Andrew Siegel with 6:54 left.

– Cook (7-2, 3-2) at Early County: The No. 7 Hornets are coming off a 57-22 demolition of Berrien in which Ross Pickle passed for 196 yards and rushed for three touchdowns and Grant Wilson ran for 142 yards and scored four TDs. The Bobcats have won three of their last four and beat Pelham 41-20 last week.

– Union County (6-3, 3-3) at Jefferson (8-1, 6-0): The Panthers, who stopped a two-game skid by shutting out Social Circle 31-0 last week, will have their hands full with the No. 9 Dragons, who’ve won eight straight and haven’t allowed any of their last five opponents more than 10 points.

– Screven County (8-1, 5-0) at Dublin (2-7, 2-3): The Gamecocks are seeking a sixth consecutive win over the Fighting Irish, who began 0-6 but have won two of their last three.
