AAAAAA blog: Region-by-region rundown of playoff scenarios

Region 1

Camden County clinched the region title with its 24-7 victory over Lowndes on Friday, and the Wildcats will be the No. 1 seed regardless of the outcome of their game against Colquitt County this week. Lowndes will be the No. 2 seed. A Valdosta victory over Coffee would make Valdosta the No. 3 seed and Colquitt County No. 4. Coffee still has a shot, but the Trojans must beat Valdosta.

Region 2

Lovejoy and Newton have clinched the top two positions, and Alcovy has clinched a playoff berth. The winner of the Rockdale County-Druid Hills game will be the other playoff team. If Rockdale County wins, the Bulldogs would be the No. 4 seed and Alcovy would be No. 3. If Druid Hills wins, the Red Devils would be the No. 3 seed and Alcovy No. 4 (unless Alcovy upsets Lovejoy, which would then give Alcovy third place).

Region 3

Hughes clinched the first region title and No. 1 seed in the program’s short history with its 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities on Friday. The winner of this week’s Newnan-East Coweta game will take second place, and the loser will be No. 3. The winner of Friday’s game between Douglas County and Tri-Cities will be the No. 4 team.

Region 4

McEachern has clinched the region title and No. 1 seed. North Cobb (which plays Campbell), Marietta (vs. Harrison) and Hillgrove (vs. McEachern), can clinch the second, third and fourth seeds with victories this week. Hillgrove can earn a playoff spot even if it loses to McEachern if South Cobb loses to Pebblebrook or North Cobb beats Campbell. South Cobb can still make it if it wins, Hillgrove wins and North Cobb loses.

Region 5

Lassiter has clinched the No. 1 seed, and Walton has wrapped up second place. The No. 3 seed will be the winner of the game between Woodstock and Milton, which has clinched at least a playoff berth. Etowah can take fourth place if it upsets Lassiter and Woodstock loses. However, barring an upset by Woodstock or Etowah, Wheeler would finish as the No. 4 seed if it beats last-place Cherokee.

Region 6

Johns Creek, West Forsyth and Alpharetta are tied for first place and have clinched playoff berths. The region’s other playoff team will be the winner of the Chattahoochee-Centennial game. West Forsyth will be the region champion if it beats sixth-place Lambert. If West Forsyth loses, the winner of Friday’s Johns Creek-Alpharetta game will take the title.

Region 7

Norcross has clinched the region title, and North Gwinnett will be the No. 2 seed. The winner of the Collins Hill-Mill Creek game will be the No. 3 seed, and the loser will be the No. 4 seed.

Region 8

Parkview, South Gwinnett, Grayson and Brookwood have clinched playoff berths and play each other this week (Parkview vs. South Gwinnett, Grayson vs. Brookwood). Here are the four possible outcomes and the seeding they would produce:

*If Parkview, Grayson win: 1. Parkview, 2. Grayson, 3. South Gwinnett, 4. Brookwood

*If Parkview, Brookwood win: 1. Parkview, 2. Grayson, 3. South Gwinnett, 4. Brookwood

*If South Gwinnett, Grayson win: 1. Grayson, 2. South Gwinnett, 3. Parkview, Brookwood

*If South Gwinnett, Brookwood win: 1. South Gwinnett, 2. Parkview, 3. Grayson, Brookwood

I almost want to say that there are too many teams in the playoffs, but I would rather have a system that ensured all good teams get in even if it means some lesser teams get in as a result. It gives it a March Madness type feel that gets everyone hype and looking for a glass slipper.

My crystal ball (actually I rubbed a Viking helmet) says all four region 1-AAAAAA teams will make it to the final 8. Valdosta defeating Hughes to get there, Lowndes defeating Lovejoy, Camden defeating anyone it plays up to this point, where it will go to war against Grayson (at Camden), and Colquitt defeating McEachern then the 2nd place team from Region 3-AAAAAA. Looking past the 3rd round is cloudy at this time.

@VikingFan — I am calling for a Grayson win and Parkview loss. This will put Grayson on opposite side of Camden until the Championship. It also means you will be taking a trip up here to Atlanta to play Grayson again in the 2nd round. Should be a good battle once again!!

I hate to sound like you, BK, and make excuses, but the infamous Douglas area officiating crew had a lot to do with the outcome of that game last year. They and the Golden Isles refereeing crews aren’t going to let the visitors get too comfortable a lead, or establish much momentum before the yellow hankies start falling like acid rain. The Vikes will see that when you visit Brunswick next year. Count on it.

@bksmith14 – Nope, not trying to avoid Camden at all. It would be nice to win region and get two games at home before the famous coin toss. Based on the two teams’ strengths, I think some people in R8 really think South can beat Parkview. I have a hard time calling it. If South plays like the team I saw play Brookwood and Archer, I think they have a good chance. If they play like the team we beat, Parkview wins.

So far as Camden, we aren’t afraid of them at all. Respect them, certainly, fear them, I think not. We will gladly play which ever team the schedule works out. Still a lot of chances for the brackets to change. If the Packers beat Camden and we wind up in first in R8, I think we still match up with Camden in the same bracket. This year more than most it really is going to come down to the last game to decide everything.

South Gwinnett will beat Parkview. Grayson needed that punch in the mouth by Parkview to wake up and I think they will be #1 in the end. Too much is going right in Grayson…………Grayson will win it all again this year. Camden is only team that can possibly stop them.

@Fred …regardless of the results from the Camden-Colquitt game, Camden is still the region champ & #1 seed from 1AAAAAA …therefore the only way to avoid a possible early 3rd round match-up between Grayson & Camden @ Camden is for Grayson to win their region…

…either way Grayson will have earned it if they make it to the Dome again …(barring upsets) 2nd place & you get to go to Camden in 3rd round …1st place and you get Lowndes at home in the 3rd round …being a 1AAAAAA fan …I’m thinking that one of the wildcards this year will be Colquitt (if they make the playoffs) …3rd place (…Coffee beats Valdosta) & they are on left side of bracket …4th place (Valdosta beats Coffee) & they are on the right side of bracket…

So no matter what it looks like Brookwood will visit Lassiter in round 1. Considering Lassiter beat Walton and Walton beat Brookwood this should be a favorable match up for Lassiter.

In addition to Alpharetta as a dark horse to watch, I think McEachern is in decent position to make a run to the dome.

Final 4 prediction: Lassiter, McEachern, Grayson, Camden Co.

This is kinda off subject….but notice that Camden after Friday night will have had away games with the 2nd 3rd and 4th seeds in Region 1. That’s a pretty tough road. Anyway losing did wonders for Grayson. They look unstoppable. I wonder if it would do the same for Camden

i hear carson the good rb for parview may be out vs s giwnnett……..if so i really dont see parkview winning that game .

and through the first 4 rounds of the playoffs…the higher seeded team host…..no coin flip.

so if lowndes wins the first 2 rounds and grayson does also if they are the 1 seed then lowndes and grayson would have a quarterfinals showdown. Grayson will not score 25 points on this years viking defense…..would be lucky to get 2 tds in my opinion. And if we have our 2 best players on the field in that game …i expect one heck of a game…decided by 7 or less. Lowndes will not get beat by the run of grayson…knemdiche or not this time. It will take grayson goin to the air and i will take my chances with that bc graysons qb is not bad but nowhere near a qb the caliber of brice ramsey

@DATS RIGHT=I do have to admitt it,we are not as fast as alot of teams in the playoffs and we aren’t playing defense like i would like over the last 4 games but its my team and we have to go with what we got ya know. But we do have a capable team but i don’t know how far we can go and u might be right, hey we may not even get out of the first round but then we may get on another run. The theme for everyone is Anything Can Happen.I do think McEachern also has a very talented team and it will be a good game but i still like my team and our coach is outstanding in the playoffs and sometimes thats the difference.I mean McEachern wont be the first team that was more athletic than us heck most of the teams we have played in the playoffs over the last 3 or 4 years were more athletic than us and some even had better teams but like i said coaching sometimes makes a difference but its going to be fun either way

Let me get this straight, you think Lowndes will be able to run on Grayson and not have to throw, but Grayson will struggle with Lowndes defense running the ball and will have to throw to win?

sportsnut

The fight in the first round is going to be good. Region 1 vs. Region 4 will, I think, produce an upset or two. At this time, Camden will face either Hillgrove or Marietta. Both are 6-3 and can put points on the board in a hurry. The problem here is that Marietta is giving up 24 ppg. Hillgrove is allowing 17. Against Camden, they must be able to score early and often. If this can be accomplished, they have a shot at the upset. Unless Ramsey is allowed to throw, it will be hard for a wing T team to play catch-up. On the other hand, if they, either Marietta or Hillgrove does not stop the run, they will be in for a long night.
This scenario is duplicated for the 2nd seed for Region 1, Lowndes. The same things apply here except Lowndes has no passing game and it will be less of a challenge if either of these two teams can score effectively. Lowndes has shown that it can stop the run but what happens when the passing game comes into play ? Will Lang be the star that comes through ?
Colquit or Valdosta will be 3, the other 4. North Cobb and Mceachern can and will put points on the board. They face a problem that all the Region 4 teams face. Playing D. The lowest scoring D in the region is Hillgrove, giving up 160 points this year. They are followed by North Cobb at 163. They must be able to limit the scoring of these teams to have a shot.

@sportsnut nice assessment of region 4 vs region 1. I think you’re spot on with the ppg allowed for region 4 and the lack of a passing game if region 1 teams get behind. However I do think the wing t is more difficult to stop than most teams realize and I think stacking the box against a Lowndes will still work to an opponents detriment. They’ve won three rings without a solid passing game to be honest. Actually I think the last few state winners ran the ball better than they passed… Much better. Even Grayson. What they also had in common were exceptional defenses so I guess they didn’t have to worry much about trailing a team and playing catch up

@ CamdenBlue == I have a theory about the wingT. It has worked before, maybe not on this level at this time but there is a reason the NFL and college teams do not run it. The defense became aware of the fact that since sometimes you don’t know who has the ball, they decided to tackle the backfield. Tackle everyone behind the line of scrimmage. This is legal as long as it is behind the line of scrimmage. No holding calls for that reason alone.I have seen teams abandon their run game when this happens. If they do not realize it soon enough, they will find themselves down. Against a passing team, which they will face more than likely, you can’t continue to run and allow the clock to tick. Having a good D is paramount. You must be able to stop the run first, and then the pass. Pass happy teams will come at you early and often, especially if they realize they can’t stop you. The worry I have for Region 1 is that it is a running region. They will be tested by some good Qb’s and recievers come round 1.

“it will be hard for a wing T team to play catch-up” this statement always cracks me up when I read this. It usually comes from those that have never had to stop the Wing-T. If you have the ball and keep the ball you don’t have to play catch up. When run properly (And Camden does) it eats up 3-4 yards per time. You don’t get the ball back. Now for those of you that think Camden can’t play with the so called big boys that throw the ball. Go back and look when Camden played Miami-Central. They did play with throwing the ball and didn’t have as good of a quarterback as they have now. So when you’ve stopped the Wing-T come back and tell everyone how you did it. Lowndes slowed it down and Camden stopped Lowndes every time except once but until you do stop it don’t think it’s that easy.

Camdenblue

@sportsnut you make good points. Region 1 will be tested by great qbs especially if they play Lassiter. Your points are good in theory. It’s just that in high school football there is rarely a qb good enough for those theories to be put into practice. When he gets to the next level is when he improves significantly. It’s actually been proven that the teams that run well win state chips even when up against good passing teams. That’s just the way high school is.

@BK
…it is always higher seed hosts …if teams hold the same playoff seeding(i.e. #1 for their region), the host team is determined by coin flip & that can happen as early as the 3rd round(quarters) …a 9-3 #1 seed has just as much of a chance at hosting as a 12-0 #1 seed (the flip of a coin) should their fortunes align…

It looks like Marietta will be at Lowndes in round 1 barring a Campbell upset of North Cobb. I’m interested to see how we can play against Lowndes. It will be a great challenge, but if our defense shows up, it could be a close game. Mceachern only beat us by 1 on a 2 point jump pass with 30 seconds left. We spotted North Cobb 14 when Jennings had 2 uncharacteristic turnovers. I would be on the lookout for a close game

No disrespect to anyone yall have played…but yall have not played a team that has a defense as fast as Lowndes.

Camdenfan ……camden did shut lowndes running game down after drive 1…….you need to be reminded that yall shut it down with lowndes backup running backs…..the other 2 lang and burgman are much more explosive and faster. It would not have been as easy if they had been in the game

hillgrove and marietta are much better rd 1 opponents than lowndes has had to play over the last several years other than last year. Lowndes had to go on rd to stephenson and all the d -1 talent they had and shut them down 7-0. this defense is much better than that one

@bksmith14 Let it go. Man I understand that Lang and Burgman are REALLY good but unless they’re superhuman beings they wouldn’t have escaped 6 wildcats coming at them at a time. The offensive line got manhandled plain and simple like Mcpherson said. Lang and Burgman would have had NO running room at all just like JJ Green had NO running room against a very stout Lowndes defense. That is all.
