Northside, M.L. King win big showdowns to clinch region titles

Here are five of the big stories from Week 11 in Class AAAAA:

*Northside still rules: Keshun Hill rushed for two touchdowns and had two TD receptions to lead Northside to a 35-28 victory over cross-town rival Warner Robins to clinch the Region 2-AAAAA championship. The region title was the fourth straight for the Eagles, who have won 30 consecutive regular-season games and seven of the past eight against Warner Robins. The Demons trailed 28-21 and had the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie, but Northside’s Marquez Moore came up with an interception to set up Hill’s final touchdown, a 25-yard touchdown run that put the game away.

*M.L. King wins 6-AAAAA: Monquavious Johnson threw three touchdowns passes, including two to Demarquis Polite-Bray, as the second-ranked Lions beat Tucker 24-17 to clinch the championship in Region 6-AAAAA. It is the third consecutive region title for M.L. King, which moved down from the highest classification this season. Tucker, which won the Class AAAA championship in 2011, has now lost two regular-season games for just the second time since 2006. The Tigers are left to battle with Stephenson, Miller Grove, Mays and Southwest DeKalb for positioning and the region’s other three playoff berths.

*Kell, Union Grove win subregions: Kell and Union Grove earned No. 1 seeds for their regions’ play-in games with victories on Friday. Kell beat east Cobb rival Pope 31-3 to take the 7-AAAAA Division B title and will play Forsyth Central for a shot at a state playoff berth. Union Grove rallied from a 33-14 halftime deficit to beat Drew 34-33 and capture the subregion title in 4-AAAAA Division A. The Wolverines will face McIntosh next weekend for a playoff berth.

*Gainesville’s stunning loss doesn’t change playoff picture: Loganville pulled off perhaps the upset of the year in Class AAAAA when it rallied to beat Gainesville 46-41, but it didn’t alter the playoff race in 8-AAAAA. Gainesville (7-2, 6-1) will still win the region title if it beats Flowery Branch (7-2, 7-0) next weekend and would finish second with a loss. Loganville (3-6, 2-5) already had been eliminated. Bernard Merriweather scored on a 1-yard run with 24 seconds left for the Red Devils, who outscored Gainesville 26-0 in the second half. “We out-executed them and punched the ball right down their throat,” Merriweather told the Gainesville Times.

*Playoff drought ends for Richmond Hill: David Katzman rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns in Richmond Hill’s 44-14 victory over Jenkins in Region 3-AAAAA as the Wildcats (7-2, 4-2) clinched their first playoff berth since 1996 and their second in the 27-year history of the program. The 1996 team, which finished 9-4 and reached the Class AA quarterfinals, is the only other one in school history to win seven or more games in a season. Richmond Hill will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed and face Northside or Warner Robins on the road in its first-round game.

I wonder how much Northside not having Austin Roberts (one of the state’s top 20 defensive linemen) last night, hurt the defense. Warner Robins sure gave us a scare.

First again? Cannon Rules…you are slipping.

Finally, the game we have all been waiting on in Region 5 is upon us! EAST PAULDING vs Allatoona for the championship. The RAIDERS took care of business last night, beating an over-matched Lithia Springs team. While Allatoona was destroying North Paulding 56-27…very impressive!

Should be a great game and the BONEYARD will be rocking!!!

Best play of the game last night in East Paulding game had to be Miles Hemphill putting what must have been an 85 yard kickoff WELL through the uprights like an extra point kick. Then getting a standing O from the EP fans.

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

OK ALLATOONA that’s the sound of the COUNTDOWN CLOCK…it’s officially ON & RUNNING!!!

This Friday Nov. 9th in “THE BONEYARD” UNDEFEATED EAST PAULDING 9 / 0 vs. UNDEFEATED ALLATOONA 9 / 0 for the REGION 5 AAAAA CHAMPIONSHIP and the # 1 SEED in the Playoffs!!!

A few interesting Stats to compare…

ALLATOONA has scored 338 / 116 1 OT game and 1 Shutout win…Avg. = 37.5 / 12.8 per game!

EAST PAULDING has scored 400 / 83 4 Shutout wins…Avg. 44.4 / 9.2 per game!

I’m not a real big fan of comparing stats but what makes this interesting is both teams have played the identical opponents so it is a fair comparison.

Several of us went to the NORTH PAULDING / ALLATOONA game last night and it was a good game to watch. It was closer than the score seems late in the 2nd quarter as it was 21 / 7 with NORTH on the goal line with 4 seconds left but no time outs. They chose to run up the middle and would have scored but ALLATOONA stopped the QB at the goal line…a footnote here refs missed a blatant facemask on the QB and NORTH should have got another play but the clock ran out and it was 21 / 7 at the half. That seemed to take the steam out of NORTH and the 2nd half was all ALLATOONA. Congrats to ALLATOONA for a real good 9 / 0 season to date!

So ALLATOONA went to overtime against HIRAM winning 20 / 17…Beat PAULDING COUNTY 36 / 0…went to SOUTH PAULDING and won 28 / 14…then went to NORTH PAULDING last night and won 56 / 21…

This week in “THE BONEYARD” you will find out it’s just different when you come EAST!!!

Love that “chant” your stands were doing whenever the “D” stopped NORTH’s offense…How did that go…”OH NO YOU DON’T, YOU CAN’T DO THAT”…cute…How bout you guys help us out this Friday with a slight revision to it…As the CANNON fires after each EAST TD and thru the smoke you see the scoreboard, how bout…

“OH YES THEY CAN…HOW’D THEY DO THAT???”…

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
GO RAIDERS!!!

well I know one thing for sure, Region 5-A will be represented well in playoffs 1-4 seeds. Good win MLK. Congrats on winning your third region title & the first since the realignment. Ok now we will see what park leagues will put their kids now as they get older. Will it be MLK, Tucker or Stephenson getting those feeders now since all are in the same region?

Congratulations Stephenson. In a game that easily could have went the other way, I am reminded that “Favor ain’t fair” and praise GOD in it. Well, go on to Tucker. As I’ve seen all of the top teams, All can be beat. We beat Tucker and see what favor brings. Gutsy play on the fake punt, we should have been ready for it. Selah.

I don’t believe that Mays has lost by more than 7 points in any game this year and has probably been one the most consistent teams in our region, they have just been a play or two short against the best teams in region. This was an issue people blogged about early in the season about there being so many good teams in one region that at least 2 playoff caliber teams won’t make the playoffs.

@ swatguy, WELL SAID! I was at the Stephenson Mays game, it was a very played, well fought and well coached by both teams. I was suprise when Stephenson went for the fake punt. The coaching staff really showed me some maturity. Mays has a great team and region 6AAAAA is tough, it’s sad that we can only represent 4 teams while I’ll entire region is tough… ;)

Got chance to see the Stephenson vs Mays game on last night Mays is a heck of a team. The region maybe log jammed again if Mays beats Tucker and SWD wins their final all will be at 6-3 and fighting for 2 spots I wonder how it gets sorted out. The three teams would have all beat each other so there has to be a system in place to decide who goes. I was just looking at it Tucker could possible be out…Wow crazy! or it could be Mays and Tucker but no SWD someone please find out.

@MakeThe Call. If SWD wins their last game against Dunwoody they will get 4th seed. If the 3 teams end up tied at 6-3, SWD will get the nod because of their head to head wins against Miller Grove and Mays. I believe Mays could still make playoffs if they defeat Tucker next week and SWD loses to Dunwoody.

I was at the Mays-Stephenson game too and Mays came out very flat, but turned in on in the 2nd half. Stephenson got a big break on a Mays punt, from my vantage point, it relly looked like Stephenson punt returner touched that ball, which should have given Mays the ball inside the 20. Well they kept the ball and that led to their fake punt for td. And tough that Mays missed the Xpt. Mays has got to be the most bad luck team it is. They have blown games to Carver, MLK, and Stephenson this year.

As far as playoff scenarios, I just dont see Mays beating Tucker, but for the sake of arguing, I am not sure, but if Mays,Tucker,SwD end up tied, wouldnt they have to have a mini playoff or something since none of them played another 5A school? There is also a 4 way tie scenario that is possible if Miller grove beat MLK. 4 way ties are easier to break, a 4 way tie with MGrove,Mays,Tucker,SWD would go to Tucker and Mays. And even more far fetched is a 5 way tie is technically possible, but it would take North Atlanta beating Stephenson which aint happening.

@ Dekalb Co Guy, I was at the game too, It was a very physical game to me between Stephenson & Mays, Mays also had an easy score before the half when Stephenson fumbled the ball around the 28 yard line. The missed extra point by Mays in the 4th qtr. came from a Stephenson defense partially blocked, I got it on video from my phone; it was some good coaching plays for Stephenson ib the 4th qtr. @Jab

I didnt say they blew a lead, said they blew a game, they had a chance to tie Stephenson and missed/had blocked extra point. So would classify that as blowing a game that they might have won.

Stephenson had 1 good play in the 2nd half and thats the fake punt. Stephenson played very conservative in the 2nd half and got lucky.

We always play conservative

November 4th, 2012

Stephenson always does that, that’s what cost the games in the past and will in the future. we Run the ball straight up the middle with all out blitzes all night. Wow, wow, wow. This has to stop. Open up the offense, please, your team is better then you are allowing them to be. Coach up, Coach up, Coach up. Be innovative on both side of the ball. And if you can’t cover, like we can’t, then blitz more. everyone blitzes the hell out of us and we don’t return the favor. I hope we see the light in the next two weeks,it’s not to late.

Actually SWD doesn’t control their own destiny. SWD has to beat Dunwoody and Mays has to lose to Tucker. If Mays beats Tucker then Mays Tucker and Swd would be in a three way tie ( assuming MG loses to MLK). If a three way tie accures it would go to a point system that would eliminate Swd and May would be 3rd seed and Tucker 4th seed.

The point of interest is Tucker is still the Champion. Anything can happen in the playoffs. And let me make this point to someone that mentioned about Stephenson & MLK wouldn’t have competed in 6-A this year thats why they played down…. Here me well idiot. If MLK & Stephenson when opened there programs played in there respected divison they would have always been in 4-A when there were 5 classification, and both scholls played up. Now there is another classification added both schools decided to stay where they were to suppose to have been all along. Taking nothin away from any school, but if you look at the previous years there is no telling if either school would have a state title by now or would have been competitve. I am glad to see more games within the county now between all the schools and that is the real reason why MLK & Stephenson didn’t play up. Don’t think those schools weren’t asked. Now everyone in the dekalb countyto enjoy football within there county. There is a good game on a week to week schedule. Whoever thought you see in the same region Tucker, Stephenson, MLK, Swd, Mays, & upcoming team Miller Grove. I think dekalb county fans enjoyed a very good season.
Region 6 will be represented very well in the playoffs

Old Gold Panther………. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information but if SWD wins against Dunwoody it’s a wrap. The first tie breaker is head to head competition which SWD owns against MAYS and Miller Grove because they beat both. The ONLY way MAYS can get into the playoffs is if the beat Tucker. THen some other things things need to happen. SWD is in with a win no matter what anybody else does.

No they are not in with a win…. ok pay attention
If SWD wins they finish the season with 3 region losses
If Mays wins they also finish with 3 region losses
By Tucker losing they would also finish with 3 region losses
Since all three would have the same amount of region losses and would have beaten each other it would create a tiebreaker situation that goes to points.
What would make everything even more complicated would be if MG beat MLK then MG would also finish with 3 region losses making it a four way tie

@ SWD Panther Paw,

didnt you just contradict yourself?

First you said, SWD is in if they beat Dunwoody, then you said if Mays beat Tucker then something else happens. Which is it? If it is a 3 way tie between SWD, Tucker, Mays please let us know what gives SWD the playoff spot? Old Panther logic seems possible.

@King of Diamonds

Your information is inaccurate. MLK never played up, they always played in the class they were assigned in. MLK had to play in the largest class the last few years. When regions were aligned for 2010-2011 Stephenson had the option to play down, but chose to play up in 5A with MLK, the previous 2 years.

@ Old Gold Panther & SWD Panther Paw Thanks! OGP I did get the info on the tie breaker and you are right. The Region tie breaker rule is a point system and if Mays beats Tucker which is 50/50 the way they have played this season they will go and Tucker will go SWD will not. SWD Panther Paw the Panthers do not win in the point catagory sorry but it is a fact. The other outlook is if MG wins over MLK but Mays still wins in points and Head to Head there. Well looks like the Raiders just have to pull an upset what a great Region everyone on their toes to the end. Good Luck!

LETS GET THIS STRAIGHT, MLK HAS NEVER PLAYED UP !!!

STEPHENSON HAS PLAYED UP ONLY ONCE !!!

The records are available if you pull them up!!! Thats why God invented google.

Enrollment for 2010-2011 seasons

MLK – 1919.5 students was third smallest school and 5 away from being in AAAA (Right Classification)

Stephenson – 1820.5 Students was Third largest school in AAAA (Played Up to AAAAA)

Tucker – 1423 students was the smallest AAAA school and 3 from being in AAA (Right Classification)

Aslo MLK spent 2 seasons in AAA and two seasons in AAAA and still have no ring.

Plaenty of teams has lost games in the regular season and won the Title. Hell TCC wnet 5-5 and finished the season 10-5. Until the eliminated from the playoffs they are still defending there title.
