In the end, the arm of Monquavious Johnson was too much.
The senior threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class AAAAA No. 2 M.L. King to a 24-17 win over No. 5 Tucker.
The victory clinches the Region 6 title for M.L. King (9-0, 8-0). It’s the Lions’ third consecutive region championship.
The Lions led by just a touchdown late in the third quarter, with Johnson scrambling behind the line and looking downfield.
Suddenly, Romello Shumake broke deep, and Johnson slung it toward the end zone, connecting with the junior for his only catch of the game, and it proved to be the difference.
It was Johnson’s third touchdown strike of the evening, and his second of 42-plus yards. The first of those went to Demarquis Polite-Bray, who finished with five catches for 77 yards and two scores.
On the next Tucker possession, it appeared the Tigers (7-2, 6-2) might go quietly after MLK took a two-touchdown lead.
Tucker was facing a second-and-22 on its own 34-yard line, with quarterback Juwaan Williams facing pressure up the middle. He stood his ground and threw the ball up for grabs to the MLK 21, where Kazim Aminu wrestled it away from a Lions defender to put the Tigers into scoring position.
It just took one play for Williams to take advantage, hitting Dallas Rivers for the touchdown, and it was suddenly back to a one-score game with 53 seconds left in the third quarter.
But Tucker got just one fourth-quarter possession, and MLK was able to run out the final 4:37 when the Tigers handed the ball back to them on downs.
The first half was dominated by the offenses, as both teams had long scoring drives early to set the tone.
M.L. King started it off with a 12-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 32-yard field goal. Tucker answered with its own 13-play march, capped off by a Juwaan Williams touchdown run that put the Tigers in front.
The teams traded scores for much of the first half, en route to a 10-10 tie. But they had very different ways of getting there offensively.
While the Lions made their hay through the air – 126 passing vs. 5 rushing – Tucker was just the opposite, amassing 88 of its 102 total yards on the ground.
Tucker senior lineman Ian Rigby was carted off the field with an injury in the third quarter, after lying on the turf for 15 minutes. No more was known on his condition at press time.

I was at the game sitting on Tucker side, MLK beat them up & down the field, the score could have been uglier if it wasn’t for a broken play inwhich Tucker quaterback through the ball up for grabs and (Tucker) player came up with it! Tucker played a good game. They just have too many key plsyerz going both ways. Stephenson and MLK wore them down. You cant be getting hit and hitting somebody every play. Today the game is more phyiscal and Tucker players were getting up slow every play. MLK coach gave Tucker a break, becsuse he started to play not lose. It was some hard hitting out there tonight. I pray and hope that Rigby is Okay, because that was aa phyiscal game. Everybody who was at the gsme need to Pray for Rigby and his family, because it could have been anyone of our kid. @dboy scott man come on please with all this state talk…Tucker like the oldest school in Dekalb been around since the 40’s and their first State Championship didnt come till 08 like 60 years later…give MLK a little time to wn….school only been in existance for maybe 12-13 seasons and the same for Stephenson…maybe 17 seasons..we will see where they are by year 60…just eat ya crow like every other Tucker Fan…they not the best in Dekalb this year..and now that all the big doggs or should i say big cats in the same region we wont have to make assumtions on who is Dekalbs best…all I can say is that…MLK is the best in 2012..and from what i saw they coulda did what ever they wanted on Tucker..as we as Stephenson…I saw earlier on the blogs that a Tucker fan stated all MLK quarter back do is throw the ball up for jumps…he must have been talking about his own QB because if not for a spectacular play by his receiver the scores cpuld have verg well been 31-10..MLK region champs nuff said…good luck to Region 6 in the playoffs!!!

Congrats to MLK on the region and good luck in the playoff to the top four teams. I know 99% of the mouth flapping on this forum is harmless, but people, it’s that other 1% that makes me wonder.
Was at the game – Tucker had chances as did MLK. These young men played their butts off on both teams, but in the end there is only one winner. I am sure their effort was not to please anyone on this post.
I’d take any one of the top 4 teams in this region and they could be competitive in 6A and I can assure you they will do just fine in playoffs.
I agree with supporting your team as a loud and proud fan, but be respectful, otherwise what kind of message are we sending these young men.

Bcs2019. It don’t matter how they do it. We still played NSWR last year in before the championship game and we clearly was the 2 best teams in the state last year. Lovejoy moved up to 6A ball unlike MLK and Stephenson

@ bCs2010 they don’t decide the region standings by points in HS Football but by wins if (ALL) are tied Stephenson & Tucker are now tied with 2 loses a piece, Stephenson gets the #2 spot bcause they beat Tucker head up! @ Dboy Scott, to address another issue that you stated, The reason Stephenson and MLK is playing in AAAAA and not AAAAAA because they don’t have the numbers (enrollment); Georgia High Association has an cut # for enrollment in each division. Stephenson doesn’t have more students than Tucker, MLK slightly have more than Stephenson; I believe D. Hills, MLK & Lakeside is the largest Dekalb County schools in that order. You can elect to play up in division with less students; but if you have the GDE numbers your school must play in the division. That why Buford had to play up in AA, Clarkston is in our division but is playing a non region schedule (Because they can’t compete) so as , Druid Hills is pplaying in AAAAAA because of it’s numbers…

@Dboy…if you look at the attendance, MLK, Stephenson and Tucker have close to the same amount of students, which is what mostly determines their classification. MLK and Stephenson had the guts to play in 5A the last few years, even though they were a 4A school. MLK did opt to play up, but the Dekalb Athletic department didn’t submit the paper work in time. They both have competitive in the highest classification. For them, just maybe that State doesn’t mean as much if it’s not in the highest classification. Trust me, Tucker would not have beaten Camden Co. or Grayson last year. Just a little food for thought.
On another note, great job by both teams tonight!!!

I haven’t seen so many so loser with so many excuses. STEPHENSON and MLK school enrollment is for 5a Sports. And for your information Dboy crybaby Scott MLK try to play up but Dekalb County Athletic Deparment didnt turn their paperwork to GHSA. Stephenson chose play down instead of up in fact Tucker have more students than Stephenson. Tucker you was always on here bragging about you did in a scrimmage and now your season doesn’t mean nothing until you win the big one. That sound like a sore loser, because in college only two team can play for the NC and you can go 12-0 and still don’t get pic but your season didn’t mean. We have told y’all for years that play either Stephenson or MLK in a real game. The outcome will be the same, because your players would have a hard time finishing the game. Like i said too many kids going both ways and you aren’t the only one with speed. Just thank Stephenson and MLK for playing up when you won State them year, because they could have played 4a GHSA sports, because they were a 4a school playing up. And for you can’t be mad about how many players on team and how both school fan follow them. They just have so many kids wanting to play football. Both school make DC Athletics Department a lot of money and especially when they play each other. The game is soldout. So, Tucker quit crying and making excuses. You lost to two schools that should have been in your region long time ago and know that they are in your region. It should be some good football on Friday and good girls and boys basketball. Not forgetting girls track anf field. REGION 6-5A are going to rule State in them 3 sports

I can’t wait too see what the excuse going to be next year, because all 3 schools have a young defense with a lot of returnee. Then you have Arabian Mountain returning a lot of starter on both side. Region6-5A is going to be interesting, because Arabian should have beaten SHS and Tucker this year. They dropped a lot of TD passes. Then they had MG 20-0 in the 4th quarter and lost because they couldn’t finish. So next year going to be interested. Its Playoff Time in 2 weeks. DC school represent your county with class and let’s try and have 2 schools from the same region playing at the Dome. Just like we did in girls and boys basketball this year with SWD and MG playing in Gwinnetti Arena

WOW!!!!!!! the LIONS are the KING of the jungle (5areg6)! Congrats MLK on your victory and being REGION CHAMPS for the 3rd year in a row. After what the team had to endure at the beginning of the season with the coaching change, nothing but a TREMENDOUS job by the coaching staff, team and the community that supported them! On a different note, i hope the young man from Tucker is fine. And not the bash you Tucker fans, you have a wonderful program but now you are playing two other wonderful programs. They might not have the CHAMPIONSHIPS that you have but they are coming soon. Stephenson and MLK have experienced playing against teams with size and speed. This is nothing new to them. Tucker you must adjust NOW! 0-2 VERSUS THE TWO BIG CATS!!!!! Will the Tiger fold and go in it’s cage or come out and FIGHT? Only time will tell!!!! Just some observations…The Tucker Tigers Head Coach will get a pass this year but he will have to step it up next season…The Offensive Coordinator needs to step down or make significant changes to the teams offensive game plan, i.e. implement a more balanced attack

Would you guys stop bickering about this. MLK is the king this year. The Region 6 top four will play the Region 7 top four in round one. The only team in Region 7 that is worth a toot is Kell. Region 6 is the best AAAAA region in the state by far and I’ll bet that the top three will go deep in the playoffs this year.
From what I have seen MLK is the best overall. Stephenson has a great rushing defense (I think we know about their pass D) and a serviceable offense. Tucker has a defense equal to MLK but cannot pass if the run game is not working (which it is not this year). Miller Grove has a good passing offense and a serviceable defense. Have not seen Mays play. SWD does not have enough offense this year (or last year).
I predict 1-MLK, 2-Stephenson, 3-Tucker, 4-Miller Grove. Mays always lets me down. Sorry Mays.
It’s anyones guess about Region 7. It looks like 1-Kell, 2-Creekview, 3-Pope, 4- Sequoyah.

@6AAAAA Fan. I disagree with your assessment. Coach L seems to be the right person for the young men and coaches at Tucker. He brings a different coaching style to the field. The team has had to adjust to that style, which I ‘d say is quite different from Coach Stephens. Not saying better or worse – just different. I enjoy watching the Wing T, it requires defenses to be physical and disciplined.
I think the DC has been on the staff for a while, so maybe this is just the wedding period. Again, when you come right down to it – its about instilling discipline, commitment and teamwork into the lives of 16, 17 and 18 year old young men. A tough chore in todays world

I hate to criticize coaches because they never call a play thinking it’s not going to work. I think it’s just expectations are so high any miscue or questionable call will have you second guessing a call.
I think defense played good, just 2 mental break downs that gave up easy touchdowns.

The difference in tucker offense this year is they don’t run the option as much. They still use the wing t offense but with Stephens as the coach the ran the option out of the wing t a lot. This makes no sense to me because Tucker’s QB is there best player and he would strive in the option. Tucker uses there wing t this year to run simple handoffs and there defense missed ALoT of tackles last night. That number 2 from MLK never got tackled from the 1st defender.

@BcS2010…Even if Miller Grove beats MLK, the standings will be a follow; 1. MLK, 2. Stephenson(head to head because they beat Tucker), 3. Tucker, 4. Miller Grove(most likely). MLK is undefeated so they have no region losses. All of the other teams have at least 2 region losses, so if MLK loses to MG, they will still only have one region loss. I heard they may not play many of the starters, which may hurt the ranking, but not the playoff seedings or the home field through out!

Bizarro back at ya!! Lets talk about last nite a little. Tucker loses another game this season to MLK the self proclaimed KINGS of DEKALB!!! Tucker lost to Stephenson earlier this season also. Now you can’t live in the past but until YA”LL WIN STATE TITLE’S HUSH!!! If I’m not mistaken winning a state title means winning games outside of DEKALB!! Some of you all mind set is so simple KINGS OF DEKALB please win when it counts!! Stephenson win was their Super Bowl ; MLK win now they the KINGS OF DEKALB so what!!!!! Now let me explain how playoffs go 1st round easy you play a fourth seed typically not good; 2nd round about the same(upsets can happen); 3rd round all the trash has been taken out; you have to practice on Thanksgiving Holiday (distractions); you may have to travel into a hostle atmosphere where they calling you the N word; 4th and State you playing DAWGS they all GOOD!!! Watching the game if not mistaken Tucker shut down the run (YOU MUST RUN THE BALL TO WIN A STATE TITLE) passings the ball is cute ; but Tucker tapped out #33 bless his heart he talked so much noise during pre game. When MLK started running the ball the game was pretty much done!! Throughout all this Tucker is still in the mix!! Bragging rights in Dekalb ya’ll can have all you want I rather be recognized as State Champs being Fitted twice that means when the ring guy comes and sizes your fingers which finger you want to wear your ring!!!! Tucker 15-0 team had 20 plus seniors alot of experience you suppose to win with that (still 15-0 is a helleva task); this year 1 starter on defense; 3 starters on offense they definitely taking their lumps they suppose to!! And again Tucker is still in the mix. I was hearing so much about this being BIG BOY football with Steph and MLK playing previously in 5AAAA. Please show me evidence were they DOMINATED that classification!! You must understand why schools are in the classification they’re in( school population) sometimes classification is overrated when comes to football. Question for the people that really understand this and not about the hype of being KINGS OF DEKALB you don’t think BUFORD would kick ass in any classification?? Why cause they dress just out as many as 5AAAA or 6AAAAA schools. Someone stated you win one game at a time. True statement but you must win BIG GAMES when they really count!!! I’ve seen all the teams. MLK has the best team in 2012. I see them as the flag ship team for 2012 DeKalb football. Besides NSWR I think they have a chance to win it all.
Stephenson beat Tucker but I think they’re about even. Depending on how they are seeded I would give Tucker the edge as far as how far they go in the playoffs. Tucker went 15-0 and won a state title in 2011 and two in the last 4 years so until someone wins a state title Tucker has the best program in DeKalb. Stephenson as a program is equal to Tucker but some whatever reason hasn’t been able to finish the deal. Prayerfully Gartrell will get one.
Tucker lost too many seniors for expectations to be as high as they are. The change in Tucker’s coaching staff has to be evaluated but not this year. Coach L has to be given the same leeway as Stephens when Stephens lost to NSWR in the Dome. They are both good coaches who have to receive support during rough stretches.

The simple fact that everyone keep bringing up the fact that MLK and SHS beat Tucker let me know how highly regarded we are in the county and in you guys eyes. I don’t see anyone bragging about beating Dunwoody or SWD.
Everyone keep saying Stephenson is 2nd best in the county when they don’t play consistent enough to win a against Miller Grove. And I never seen anyone so happy about being MLK little brother. I guess since you guys as so use to losing to them every year.

The NSWR program that beat Tucker in the dome moved up the next year and beat Camden. After two years they dropped down and Tucker beat them on the way to the 4A championship last year. Stop with the 4A versus 5A. Miller Grove was 4A last year and beat Stephenson this year. Beat whoever is on the schedule and win a championship at any level and you’re to be congratulated. Even if it is true it doesn’t explain why the 5A programs in DeKalb didn’t beat who was on their schedule. It’s a bad testimony to say “poor us we had to play camden, and grayson, and …”. Don’t play the victim. That said MLK is this year’s flagship so we need for them to go and get it done.

As I stated earlier today in one of blogs when you get to the 3rd round your better be coached up WELL in all phases Offense, Defense and Special Teams. Oh yea if you want to find out how good a team is WATCH THEIR SPECIAL TEAMS!!!! May’s lost because of special teams tonite or at least go into overtime.

What is wrong with SHS and MLK playing in ther right CLASSIFICATION. Understand this Tucker sore losers both schools could of have played in your region when your team won them 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, but chose to play up in the largest classification. If you are so mad about them playing in their right classification, you can blame the county for KING, but SHS chose too stay in 5a. Its playoff represent the county well, as of the games last night looks like all of the CATS are in. MLK, SHS, TUCKER and SWD. When SWD lost to MLK and SHS did they act like Tucker know they took their lost with class. They didn’t act like you guys. People wouldn’t be talking so much about Tucker if you guys wouldn’t brag about beating both SHS and MLK in scrimmage. Which we told y’all its was just a scrimmage play us in a regular season game where it counts. So, you lost to both schools this year and that’s it. Know hard feeling, its PLAYOFF and go out there and represent your community and county

Had no idea that some Tucker fan were such cry babies. When y’all won state most Dekalb fans were happy for you all for representing the county well. But as soon as you all moved up to 5A many of you posters came in talking much trash like you were going to automatically steam roll Stephenson and MLK instead of just coming in and proving yourselves on the field in the this division and letting the events speak for themselves. Any team can lose. Take it like a grownup and move on. Posters being sore losers is a really a bad look.

Then y’all moved up to 5A and many of your bloggers got so excited that they immediately started trash talking everyone, especially MLK and SHS. Acting like you were going to steam roll everyone in the division when had never even been tested. On any given weekend, any team can lose. Take it like the grownups that you say you are and move on. Being a bitter sore loser = not a good look. Definitely not a good example for the kids out there playing hard on the Tucker football team.

@ Bizarro, Like I said the Stephenson Mays game was very physical from the beginning to the end, it is true they both teams have speed and talent on both sides of the ball, both had many weapons, and Stephenson coaching staff show me something that I have never seen since they beat Roswell in a State playoff game that they can come up with some good play calling to seal the victory. I AM SENDING A SHOUT OUT TO THE ENTIRE REGION 6AAAAA ABOUT 70% OF IT’S TEAM ARE TOUGH THIS YEAR, IT SHOULD BE ONE GREAT PLAYOFF RUN TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR NOW I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO (ALL) GO MLK! Some more observations…#1 Seed M.L. King, #2 Seed Stephenson, #3 Seed Tucker, #4 Seed SWD….Unless M.L. Kings lays down this coming friday night to Miller Grove then M.G. will be out or if Tucker loses to Mays then M.G. will be in, Tucker can go from the #3 seed to the #4 seed with a loss…Yes the Wing-T offense can make defenses stand tall and be more physical but that doesn’t mean you can’t implement some strong passing plays into your offensive game plan, I watched the Camden vs Lowndes game and it was a very physical game between the two teams but the OC for Camden called some pretty safe but timely pass plays all night, my point is you can’t continue to try and run when the stronger defenses you will encounter during the season and playoffs will stack the box with 10 and 11 defenders and not have some kind of audible to either your tightend or halfback that you talked about or practiced during the week, that’s called making in-game adjustments!

@6AAAAA Fan. I believe if SWD wins their final game against Dunwoody they will get the 4th seed. If Miller Grove, Mays and SWD end up at 6-3 in region, I beieve SWD gets the nod because of their head to head victories against them.

@True Blue….ditto, nicely said. I too am just a little amazed at the sour grapes(trash talking) from the Tucker bloggers. Last year MLK & SHS fans were all cheering and congratulating Tucker. @whoknew and 6AAAAA fan, thanks for the sanity. Tucker fans who were predicting a Tucker rout….were put on notice that MLK & SHS were tested programs (even without a State Championship), because they were in a higher classification(against schools dbl in size…and yes MLK did beat Valdosta 2011). Tucker bloggers said that it didn’t make a difference-”they had it” All we are saying now….is “it did”. When it’s all said in done, we are all on the same team. Dekalb should be well represented in the playoffs. Let the healing begin…

It looks like the Tucker Tigers will be on the same side of the playoff bracket as the Northside Eagles. If both teams advance, then they will meet at the :MAC” in Warner Robins for a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals! That ought to be interesting! GO BIG BLUE!!! IT’S GREAT TO BE A NORTHSIDE EAGLE!!!

Tucker fans are not sore losers but sore winners. When you’ve won like Tucker it’s hard to lower expectations if only for 1 year. Let’s be real, two state championships in four years and only having one in the last 5 where you lost multiple games will spoil some people.
In high school sports there is a two year window to win a state football championship. Tucker’s two years were last year and the year before when they lost to Whitewater in the semi’s. Prior to that it was the team that won in 08 and the team that let NSWR come back in the dome. Prior to that it was the 04 and 05 teams that lost to Statesboro in the last seconds. You win with juniors and then those juniors become seniors and try and make another run. Stephenson’s two years were when the group with Marcus Ball was junior and seniors, the year when Reggie Ball’s group were juniors and seniors and the year when Raymond Sanders and his group were juniors and seniors. Like Tucker this year’s Stephenson team is not on the level of what Stephenson normally has and I apologize because I don’t mean to slight anyone but recognize that Stephenson is a great program. I’m not as familiar with MLK but this group has to get it done because the window will close and they have to come up with another group. Last year they made a run but this year they have to get it done or start over. I don’t mean from scratch but they have to bring together another group.

Alright. I am going to do this again, for the folks who missed it. MLK schedule last year was as follows: South Gwinnett, Collins Hill, @Newton, @Newnan, @Langston Hughes, @Valdosta, Westlake, @East Coweta, Stephenson, …………..I am missing a couple of teams but my point is made!!!!! The Lions were undefeated with this schedule in the previous 5A. There are not too many current 5A teams who would have the same success facing that schedule. If any!!!!!!! Holler at me!

All I have ever done was Rep. Stephenson & MLK. Go check my record when Gwinnett Co. schools was going in you guys last year I went harder than any poster on this site defending MY COUNTY. I was born and raised on Snapfinger and still live in the area now!!!
Then you guys drop down and talk crazy like we havn’t been playing ball, we havn’t beat anyboy and if you was in AAAA y’all would have won 5 titles in a row disrepecting everything Tucker has accompliched. If one of you guys don’t win state I bet it will be so many exsuces this site will crash.
MLK played in there rightful calssification according to there enrollment numbers, THEY HAVE NEVER PLAYED UP !!! I checked the numbers and they don’t lie !!!
Stephenson has only played up once and that was for the two previous seasons.Check the numbers on that too!!!
MLK also has played in AAAA and AAA for a total of four seasons and don’t have Ring to show for it.
True that banner for Region Champs is goning to look good hanging in the Gym, but a Ring looks a lot nicer.

Enrollment for 2010-2011 seasons
MLK – 1919.5 students was third smallest school and 5 away from being in AAAA (Right Classification)
Stephenson – 1820.5 Students was Third largest school in AAAA (Played Up to AAAAA)
Tucker – 1423 students was the smallest AAAA school and 3 from being in AAA (Right Classification)
