AAAAAA blog: Camden defends No. 1 ranking … Four teams clinch region titles

Five things we noted from Class AAAAAA on Friday –

- No. 1-ranked Camden County is the champion of Region 1 after traveling to No. 4 Lowndes and winning 24-7. Lowndes scored on its opening drive, but Camden controlled the game from there. Camden (9-0) plays No. 10 Colquitt County (6-3) next week in an attempt to finish unbeaten in region play, but the No. 1 seed is secured.

- Hughes, Lassiter and McEachern joined Camden in clinching region titles. Hughes (8-1, 4-0) won its first in history, in Region 2, with a 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities. This is a 4-year-old south Fulton County school that had finished 2-7, 2-8 and 3-7 in its previous three seasons. McEachern (7-2, 6-0) won Region 4 with a 62-21 victory over Harrison. It’s McEachern’s third title in four seasons. Lassiter (9-0, 6-0) won Region 5 with a 28-14 victory over Roswell. It is Lassiter’s second region title, first since 20009.

- South Gwinnett remained in contention for the title in Region 8 with a 42-38 victory over Brookwood. QB Jordan Ramey passed for 382 yards and four touchdowns. South Gwinnett (7-2, 6-1) can clinch at least a No. 2 seed and home playoff game with a victory next week over Parkview (7-2, 6-1). For South to win the title, Brookwood would have to upset Grayson (8-1, 6-1). If Grayson and South Gwinnett win next week, Grayson is the champion.

- Walton is the No. 2 seed in Region 5, but might be missing Tyren Jones, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return in a 21-16 victory over Etowah. The win clinched a home playoff game for the Raiders. Jones returned to the field in the second half but did not play. He was expected to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Jones, who is committed to Alabama, entered the game with 1,675 yards rushing.

- Joshua Dobbs of Alpharetta might’ve become the first player to pass for 3,000 yards this season. Unofficial stats for Friday’s game – a 41-23 victory over Centennial – credited him with 382 yards and four touchdowns. That would put him at exactly 3,000 yards passing on the season with 24 touchdowns.

FYI – If Coffee beats Valdosta, and Camden beats Colquitt, next week, that will force a 3-way tie fir first place. The likely playoff teams then would be Coffee and Colquitt.

The tiebreaker, if I understand it, would be points allowed against those three teams + Lowndes and Camden. In other words, ”all playoff contending teams.”

That would eliminate one team. After that, it’s head-to-head.

As it stands, the points allowed are …

Colquitt – 64
Valdosta – 96
Coffee -97

You won’t bring proof bc you can’t, like I did. Every one has their opinions though. Good luck to both teams friday

I only know what I heard from our coach about his action after the game last year. I didn’t think to record the conversation or that I would need to prove it in any way(laughing). Anyway, I hope it is a great game and everyone comes out health even classless coach Rush

@ Your Highness74 == Why are you constantly down playing or degrading Lovejoy ? Since day 1, that is all you have done. I have continued to give the team of your choice props but not to say they are the best but all you do is put down. What is wrong ? Does the presence of Lovejoy frieghten you ? Being silly is not listening to your elders and continuing to do things your way when you have someone with knowledge of the situation trying to give you information that may be helpful in your future endeavors. I use the appropriate language for the perspective audience. Simply put, Lovejoy is coming to play ball. They will not run from Camden, Lowndes, Grayson or any other team,. You can claim what ever you like but Lovejoy and many others are on the same quest and no one, I repeat no one is going to lay down for Camden. I am glad that those kids don’t have to cash all these checks you keep writing !

I honestly don’t care about a Rush Propst compliment and none of the other Camden should either. Colquitt has a very good team in that they can run and pass very well. There defense is stingy and Rush is a good coach whether he has an attitude problem or not. I don’t care. With all that said I hope Camden beats the living daylights out of Colquitt on their home field.

Nine games through their step onto the big stage, Camden County has been beyond good. They’ve been perfect.

Located in the picturesque far southeast corner of the state of Georgia, Camden County is home to Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, Cumberald Island National Seashore and now, most notably, arguably the best high school football team in the country. The 9-0, top-ranked Wildcats have been a powder blue splotch atop the Peach State polls for years. This season, however, they’ve officially broadened their stroke.

Camden County entered 2012 having not lost a region football game in over a decade. While the Wildcats more than made up for their former region’s lack of depth with a consistently-trying non-region schedule (see participation in the Kirk Heirbstreit Classic, games against Hoover, Miami Central, St. Thomas Aquinas), some pointed towards their old alignment as part of the reason for their relentless dominance. The question long asked was a simple one: could the ‘Cats maintain the status quo with a dramatic change of scenery?

Preseason discussions this summer focused on the Wildcats’ highly-anticipated move to Region 1-AAAAAA, a grouping of south Georgia powers considered by many to be the toughest in high school football. Camden County’s new neighbors included Coffee County, Colquitt County, Lowndes and Valdosta, the latter two schools coming from ESPN’s “Titletown”. Joining Jeff Herron amongst the region coaching ranks, known commodities Rance Gillespie, Randy McPherson, Rush Propst and Robby Pruitt. Of the seven colorful coaches in the region, six of them have won at least two state championships. The other made title game appearances with two different teams and lost by a total of three points.

Nine games through their step onto the big stage, playing in what’s been called the “SEC of High School Football”, Camden County has been beyond good. They’ve been perfect. More so, their results this fall have not been much different than in season’s past. The Wildcats are winning games by an average score of 43-5, with their offensive and defensive totals and margin the victory being the most in the state’s largest classification. No prep team in the state of Georgia is allowing fewer points per game.

Camden County has handled each challenge this season in stride, though the consecutive victories haven’t come without adversity.

“It is a very stressful thing from a coaching standpoint and it puts a lot of stress on our kids too, physically and mentally. I think the worst part of all of this is that we’re all kind of limping into the playoffs,” explained head football coach Jeff Herron to Kevin Thomas on “The Afternoon Blitz” on The Fan Sports Radio 103.7, ESPN Radio Southeast Georgia. “You can’t play this type of schedule and not get some kids banged up and hurt, just physically and mentally worn down. That includes coaches, too.”

The Wildcats faced their most formidable foe to date last Friday night in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU against undefeated region-rival Lowndes. Facing the famed Vikings in Martin Stadium in Valdosta, Herron’s squad emerged with an impressive 24-7 victory.

“It was a great atmosphere, probably the loudest stadium I have ever been in. An unbelievable band, their band is something else. It really is a hard place to play, communication is extremely difficult, but what a good setting for a high school kid to get to play in,” he continued.

With four different players ranked in the national top 55 at their position per Rivals.com, commentators used the broadcast to discuss, among other topics, Camden’s prominent recruits. Quarterback Brice Ramsey and athlete J.J. Green are both currently committed to Georgia, linebacker Jarrad Davis has pledged to Auburn and offensive lineman J.P. Vonashek has verballed to South Carolina. Though televised games are nothing new for the Wildcats, Herron feels like all of the attention may have disrupted his team’s focus.

“I can honestly say I don’t think we played our best. I thought it was one of our worst performances in terms of mistakes, but Lowndes had a lot to do with that. They came out and had a very good gameplan and really took it to us right off the bat. I think our kids might have been caught up in all of the hype and TV and all of that mess,” the veteran head coach acknowledged. “We stumbled out of the gate a little bit, but I was proud of them and I think we got momentum back really quick and kind of got control. Lowndes had a very good plan and they executed it really well. It was an extremely tough game.”

With the win, Camden County secured a region championship in their very first season in Georgia’s 1-AAAAAA. It’s a feat that, for now, has silenced some of the critics. The Wildcats have moved up to fifth in the USA Today high school rankings. While it’s extremely difficult to contrast teams from across the country, this resume is one that must be under serious consideration.

“We’re certainly pleased that we were able to win it in our first year in there. We heard a lot of the stuff about coming from the weak region and all of that so it did make it kind of special. We’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us,” Herron admitted. “One of our goals was to win the region but that wasn’t our ultimate goal. We need to take care of business the last week and head into the playoffs and try to keep this going.”

Next up for the ‘Cats, a chance to rewrite some wrongs against their lone nemesis from a year ago: Colquitt County. Camden has won 21 of their last 22 games, their one loss coming in the playoffs last season at the hands of the Packers. This Friday night the Wildcats make a return trip to Moultrie. While the region crown has already been clinched, Colquitt County will serve as a strong litmus test in the regular season finale. The 6-3 Packers have lost their trio of games by a grand total of seven points.

“It certainly is a big challenge. They’ve got a good team, they beat us last year and knocked us out of the playoffs. We had a very long trip this week, we got back really late Saturday morning. It’s a short turnaround, we don’t have anyway out of it. I guess we could just forfeit and rest up for the playoffs now but that probably wouldn’t be the best thing to do. We’ll hopefully get through this week, put Friday night behind us and be ready to go next Friday,” Herron stated.

For a program with a recent-tradition as proud as any in the country, mission one has been accomplished. The next big goal remains winning their fourth state championship in a decade. Here, the mettle of Herron’s team will truly be tested.

“We’ve all joked about preparing for the ‘SEC’ and all that but the difference is that after that SEC Championship, they get a month off to go play one bowl game. We don’t get any days off,” he detailed in reference to the start of the postseason. “We just have to tee it up the next week and have five straight playoff games to achieve our ultimate goal. That’s going to be tough. I really think everyone in region one is going to struggle with that. Hopefully we will be good enough to overcome it, but it’s not going to be an easy task for any of us.”

Camden County football has become a recognizable name nationally. At a program long known for producing former NFL running back Stump Mitchell, Herron has built a paint-by-number perennial power where sheer supremacy is the annual expectation. The final leg of another run towards that will soon begin. For a coach who has seen a lot of greatness in his career, he still has more questions than answers for a team that has not been played within two scores this season.

“I think as a coach, sometimes, it’s hard to compare,” Herron added of how his current team stacks up to his others. “We really have never looked at it like that, we just worry about what this team is capable of doing. They’ve proven themselves through the region and regular season schedule more than any of our teams have probably ever had to do before. Does that make us better? I don’t know. We won’t know that for five more weeks. We’ll see where we’re at then.”

With perhaps his most talented team ever, Camden County’s Herron appears to be coating one more masterpiece. This canvas, through his eyes, remains a very real work in progress. An abstract look offers some uncertainty as the Wildcats move towards the playoffs. A retrospective one, though, hints that this could be yet another work of art in the making

@Colquitt Fan I think the grounds that most Camden Fans are using are his actions such as accusing a coach of cheating, illegal recruitment, bad temper on the sidelines during games etc. Only two of those can actually be proven in my eyes. Honestly I think Rush is a good coach because to me he outcoached Herron last year. He may have Herron’s number for all I know. But he does get a bit too emotional for my taste as Titletown USA said earlier. We all want to win but you’ve got to be more composed than that.

Sounds like locker room material to me. And I wouldn’t say Propst has his number, y’all sent us home three year ago in the final four. Rush just made a gutsy call last year bc he knew we wouldn’t win in OT. Just a really good rivalry starting to begin. I can assure rush respects Camden and Herron as he’s said it numerous times

camden county has the best team they hve had in years…..the diff between camden is lowndes is really one thing and thats the talent behind center. If we had a kid like ramsey or even a better qb than we got now then we would be right there with them.

I know …i know…i have said a million times had our 2 best players been in the game it would have been different. That doesnmt mean lowndes wins……i just think the game is much closer. Lowndes made to many mistakes to have a shot at beating camden with or without our 2 best on the field

Camden will not be as good next year….They dont have a brice ramsey or jj green next year……Sure they will be very very good….but this is the best team they have had in a long time.

The three best teams in the state in my opinion are camden..grayson..lowndes….lovejoy is not far behind nor is norcross and a few others. This is my opinion.

I am not a fan of lassiter…..they always have a good passing game ….but there defense is nowhere near the d that the top 3 in the state in my opinion have

Lovejoy will have a shot in 3 weeks to prove they belong in the top 5 or so in 6aaaaaa…….i just hope our two best players are back for that game…..we will need them to win that game….lovejoy is good enough to beat lowndes if we arent at our best

What made it a big deal is being called a liar and rumor starter by you. I am neither. I only spoke what I know to be true. As far as you believing me, I dont really care if you do. the reason I posted it was so colquitt fans will understand if Herron decides not to take he foot off of the gas and go conservative. It will not be because he disrespects Colquitt in any way but it will be a way for him to poke back at Rush. Believe me Herron will never say any thing out of line to anyone but he will make his point on field. So like i said earlier. tell your team to strap it up a little tighter this game. @Bksmith=After we lost to u guys i could have gave everyone on the ajc blogs 4days of excuses but i am not that kinda guy,hey we lost but i don’t have to say we played our worst game of the year and still had a chance to tie or win do i.The better team did not win that night i don’t care what u say cause only having 200 yards if that against Lowndes and the 3 int’s and put that with the 5 int’s we gave Valdosta yet we still had a chance to win both games. We should have been blown out in both games but good teams find away to overcome mistakes and good coaches always put their team in position to have a shot in the end. Coach Mac always does a great job but with at least 5 cupcake teams he couldn’t let his 2Qb’s throw the ball at least 10 times a piece to try to develope at least one QB.Now with the playoffs around the corner u think 2 players will take u to the title. Now i do understand Lowndes has a good team but i don’t think u can compare Lowndes to last years Grayson team because it was the Grayson QB who won the game against us and saved their season.Just look at that last drive i think he converted 2 or 3 third down convertions with timely throws that were perfectly placed to keep the drive alive and he threw the winning TD.So at some point in a big game on third down and long in the playoffs in the last 2mins down by 7 can u depend on your Qb. I promise u in these playoffs it will happen cause their is going to be some good teams with good athletes Defense does win championships but alot of times it takes balance to get u there.I still will be pulling for Lowndes in the playoffs as i will for all of region 1 because me rooting against my region and the south is absurd and will never happen but i do respect Atl teams. This is just my opinion but their is no reason why no one has to game plan for your Qb this late in the season because he can’t hurt anyone but i don’t blame the young man because he is doing what his coach tells him to do.Coaches have all season to get their teams playoff ready and prepared for all types of situations and against soft teams (6 to be exact) your coaches should have threw the ball more so in the playoffs you guys would have at least a little balance to keep defenses honest. This type of thing could cost a very good Lowndes team a title if your Qb is put in a situation that is too big for him cause he is not been adequately prepared, but hey as long as u guys don’t get down by 7 or 14 points he wont be put in a bad situation huh

Lol lets bring it back folks. I wonder if Camden’s secondary has improved from last year. I’m inclined to say yes but feel we’ll get a chance to see if that’s true come Friday against Colquitt

@Camden74 – I reposted *your* direct words, no one else’s. You have shown a remarkable propensity over the past couple of years of doing exactly what you accuse everyone of by not accepting any position except your own and you have to have the last word. Neither Sportnut nor I run and hide from you. I got into a back and forth with you last year and said I wasn’t going to do it again. Camden is a good team but they don’t walk on water like you claim they do. No team does. There are plenty of other good teams in the state that you spend most of your time talking down about and attacking people that don’t agree with you. I don’t intend to get into it with you any further. I intend to discuss the great football played in this state at all levels.
