Five things we noted from Class AAAAAA on Friday –
- No. 1-ranked Camden County is the champion of Region 1 after traveling to No. 4 Lowndes and winning 24-7. Lowndes scored on its opening drive, but Camden controlled the game from there. Camden (9-0) plays No. 10 Colquitt County (6-3) next week in an attempt to finish unbeaten in region play, but the No. 1 seed is secured.
- Hughes, Lassiter and McEachern joined Camden in clinching region titles. Hughes (8-1, 4-0) won its first in history, in Region 2, with a 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities. This is a 4-year-old south Fulton County school that had finished 2-7, 2-8 and 3-7 in its previous three seasons. McEachern (7-2, 6-0) won Region 4 with a 62-21 victory over Harrison. It’s McEachern’s third title in four seasons. Lassiter (9-0, 6-0) won Region 5 with a 28-14 victory over Roswell. It is Lassiter’s second region title, first since 20009.
- South Gwinnett remained in contention for the title in Region 8 with a 42-38 victory over Brookwood. QB Jordan Ramey passed for 382 yards and four touchdowns. South Gwinnett (7-2, 6-1) can clinch at least a No. 2 seed and home playoff game with a victory next week over Parkview (7-2, 6-1). For South to win the title, Brookwood would have to upset Grayson (8-1, 6-1). If Grayson and South Gwinnett win next week, Grayson is the champion.
- Walton is the No. 2 seed in Region 5, but might be missing Tyren Jones, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return in a 21-16 victory over Etowah. The win clinched a home playoff game for the Raiders. Jones returned to the field in the second half but did not play. He was expected to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Jones, who is committed to Alabama, entered the game with 1,675 yards rushing.
- Joshua Dobbs of Alpharetta might’ve become the first player to pass for 3,000 yards this season. Unofficial stats for Friday’s game – a 41-23 victory over Centennial – credited him with 382 yards and four touchdowns. That would put him at exactly 3,000 yards passing on the season with 24 touchdowns.
FYI – If Coffee beats Valdosta, and Camden beats Colquitt, next week, that will force a 3-way tie fir first place. The likely playoff teams then would be Coffee and Colquitt.
The tiebreaker, if I understand it, would be points allowed against those three teams + Lowndes and Camden. In other words, ”all playoff contending teams.”
That would eliminate one team. After that, it’s head-to-head.
As it stands, the points allowed are …
Colquitt – 64
Valdosta – 96
Coffee -97

Sportsnut, Camden74 is right in his assesment. With the exception of 2010 when Brookwood beat Colquit in 2010, 11 of the 12 champions have been exactly as he stated. Play good defense, run and pass when they want. It has not necessarily been the wing t, but they have been run heavy. I do think a change is going to come in offenses with more passing and spread formations mainly because that is what college recruiters are now looking for. Texas has really gone from run heavy to state to throwing the ball all over and it is only a matter of time before Ga starts in the same direction. Older, more established coaches will not change what is successful for them, but as younger coaches come in, they will change the offenses.
I am looking forward to watching Colquitt and Camden, watching the different styles.

The Truth…..You’re absolutely correct! But keep in mind that in 2010, neither Brookwood nor Colquitt had a defense. It was a shootout and Brookwood got the best of it…….
Katy is one of the few remaining Texas powers who still have a run first offense. But I’m sure if they ever have a QB with a live arm, they’ll probably turn to the Spread Offense too, well, eventually…….

@Camden74 He loves attention and gets caught up so then you get Mr Hyde. He’s usually calm and laid back otherwise. I noticed the post mentioning the 2010 Brookwood-Colquitt game. Our horrible defensive play that night is why Rush ditched the DC and scooped up Travis Pearson who’s arguably the best coach we have.

Speaking of Rush, I want to bring this up. Watching the game online Friday, Colquitt lined up for a field goal. Colquitt had just had a TD called back and I think Propst called two consecutive timeouts to fuss at the refs. He as away from the team huddle and had the ref and a line judge to the side and was going to town. It appeared the ref had enough at one point and just walked away during the first timeout but the line judge stood there and listened for the rest of the first time out and all of the second one. I wanted to see if it had an effect during the game but it did not appear to.
I understand the need to talk to the refs on occasion, but this was overboard. It may work for him at home, but this may be a problem when he is on the road. As much as any of us don’t want to think it happens, high school refs are far from perfect and can get caught up in the excitement of the game. I would hate to see the players hurt because Propst goes off on a ref with a short fuse and he winds up getting thrown out of the game. It also bad that his ability to coach is often times overlooked because of his attitude on the sidelines.

@YO — You asked what happens if Coffee beats Valdosta by one point, with each team thereby surrendering the same points to region playoff teams, and Camden bearing Colquitt, causing Colquitt, Valdosta, and Coffee to be in a 3 way tie. Unless Colquitt surrenders an absolute ton of points in a loss to Camden, they would have given up the fewest of the 3 tied teams. In this scenario, Valdosta and Coffee would have surrenderd the same amount of points. That 2 -way tie would be settled by head to head, and Valdosta would – in this scenario- be eliminated, leaving Colquitt and Coffee tied with 3 losses. Colquitt would be the regions’s 3rd seeded team because of their win over Coffee. Coffee swould be the region’s 4th seeded team. The only way for any of that to happen is Coffee to beat Valdosta, which I do NOT see happening. AND, Colquitt might, MIGHT, up and beat a still celebrating Camden, which would give Colquitt outright 3rd place regardless of the outcome of the Valdosta vs Coffee game.
If three teams are tied and all give up a different amount of points to region playoff teams, the team giving up the most is simply eliminated, leaving two teams tied, each with a 3 -3 region record. That would be settled by head to head, and Colquitt would be 4th and Valdosta 3rd because of the Cat’s win at Cleveland Field.
Camden has locked up our region’s 1st place, and Lowndes is locked in at 2nd place because of our win over Colquitt. I know this is as clear as mud! Todd Holcomb and I communicated back and forth Saturday about it, and I think he is going to describe and explain our region’s “3 way tie-breaker” rules in an upcoming article. Our region’s rule does not encourage a team to run up scores, but at the same time does recognize and rewards good defenses.

@CamdenCOFan said “The truth be known, the best football in the state is always played in the southend.” Not always. Maybe in the past but not in the recent past. It has been pretty even since 2000 and I think I am comfortable saying that most S GA fans recognize that the N GA teams are not all pushovers. I think this is true in all classifications.

Gamer appreciate your toughts there. If there is any one who respects but not “reverences” Camden it is Lowndes. No body has been in more dog fights with them more than we have. I personally have never disrespected them, despite their weak region. Seems many up North would choose to do that but Lowndes fans no better.
As for bowing at their throne every year….we’ll see. I think Camden knows better too. I’m pretty confidant over the years we have earned their respect also.
It is definitely a mutual respect even if we do get on here and talk a little trash at times.

Fred when it comes to championships it would appear only the Gwinnett teams finish the drill of the teams from the North. We mess with you guys and feel over all we play consistently better football, but Gwinnett has our respect.
Now here is what is interesting. When we say North play off seeds we are talking 28 teams. When we say South playoff teams there are only 4. With only 4 though we like our chances.

sportsnut have you ever thought you run a balanceed attack because you have to? Just maybe Lovejoy doesn’t run the ball as good as Lowndes and Camden.
As far as playing passing teams Camden and Lowndes have seen plenty of that too. We do both play Colquit you know (just to name one). Why don’t you check out FSUs defense and see how many Lowndes players are playing in the defensive backfield despite Greg Reid not there this year. The fact is if there is any thing Lowndes is known for when it comes to being recruited into Div 1 college it is defensive backfield. You can be sure it isn’t just because they are good tacklers.
When Camden did throw I didn’t exactly see wide receivers running wide open did you? And that despite our #1 DB injured. If any thing a Georgia signee qb with a powerful rushing attack should be able to get wide receivers open. It is called play action off of your great running attack (and Camden has one). On the other hand Lowndes was getting some time to throw but apparently or wide receivers were locked down pretty good by Camdens dbs.
So bring your passing games to the contest against either one of us. We are ready. Fact is I would say that the only team we have extreme respect for at this point from the North is a non passing attack and you know who that is. Why? Because like Lowndes and Camden they play suffocating defense against tough competition.
In your points comparison with Camden you left out one very important fact. Who the 2 teams played. Camden’s was one of the toughest schedules in the state and to put it nicely Lovejoy’s wasn’t.

WILDHAWG2012……. I have no problem with Propst’s coaching ability. Because he definitely knows how to attack the 3-3-5 defense. But he’s whining and crying to the officials every play! He acts as if the rules don’t apply to him. But he knows eventually, the officials will give him the benefit of the doubt and a crucial call will go his way, even if it shouldn’t. The thing that really gets me is how much the officials allow this man to get away with! Guess he believes in the squeaky wheel scenario……

@AVikingFan …with Valdosta holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Colquitt you have it backwards if Valdosta wins they are the 3rd seed regardless of what happens in the Camden-Colquitt game …Colquitt’s only chance at the 3rd seed is with a Valdosta loss & Colquitt win …or Valdosta being eliminated in a 3-way tie scenario…

Lovejoy has played one good football team all year and it was colquitt county……they loss 14-7….and they play in a powderpuff lollipop region….you guys are not battle tested and come big boy time you will suffer bc of it. Lowndes will shut lovejoys d-1 rb down completely…he will run nowhere all night when we play…and rest assured its coming…lowndes will beat hillgrove or marietts in rd 1. Lovejoy has not faced a defense like they will face when the vikings come to town…..
colquitt countys defense has been rather weak this year for the most part……gave up 38 to valdosta…26 to brunswick….and a lot of yards in those games….
all lovejoy could do was put up 7 points to more than likely the 4th seed from region 1….
lowndes will run the ball on lovejoy…and if lang or burgman are back …ouch…

Amazing what you can observe by simply reading on these blogs instead of posting lol. I’d like to point out something to both sides of the South GA and North GA frontlines….BOTH sides are essentially predicting outcomes and forgetting that GREAT teams are labeled GREAT in DECEMBER. CAMDEN and LOWNDES know this, GRAYSON and BROOKWOOD know this…PARKVIEW is trying to remember this. A lot of very good teams are being overlooked by the majority and if you would stop for two seconds you would see that a lot of underdogs have claimed victory this season. The playoffs will be no different…especially when you consider that ANYONE can lose on ANY GIVEN NIGHT in the playoffs.
Camden and Lowndes (despite the arguments) are very good. IMO Grayson is better, but I have learned not to predict or expect anything in the playoffs. There will be a lot of fans that learn this in the following weeks. My focus will be on the teams without the hype and without the publicity….dangerous teams have nothing to lose, but expected winners have EVERYTHING to lose.

Someone check the records please but I believe Camden has competed outstanding in every game played since say the year 2000. The only two games, I remember we were not close at the end was 2003 Lowndes 30 to 0 loss and 2010 St Thomas Aquinas 42 to 28. Other than that we were in the games with a chance to win at the end. Including high powered offenses from Miami Central, Hoover Al., North G. which we blanked 35 to 0 in 2009 when everyone said we had no chance. I will put our run game up against anybody’s passing attack any day. Ask the head coach from St. Thomas what he thought of our run game. (343 yds that game…..
Now lets do the math on passing and rushing. (remember this HS football). More variables invovled with passing means more opportunites for mistakes. Now dont take that the wrong way because I assure you we don’t think Camden Football in Superior in any way. We do believe we can strap up and play with the best. I think our record reflexs that. It would also explains why we get Nationally recognized in the polls. So please keep slinging the ball all over the field and we will keep harassing your QB’s and receiver’s until someone coughs the ball up. Happens every year.

NGHS 09 is the voice of reason on this particular blog. Congrats to Camden fans on the win over Lowndes…they were the better team that night. I am not normally interested in rematches, but I would not mind seeing them go at it again with Lowndes’ 2 speedsters available. Not saying it would have mattered, but I think it would make for more compelling competition.
Any HS coach worth his salt would prepare for Camden, Grayson, and Lowndes with letting their secondary know they must play lockdown football all night and then proceed to stuff the box. The question is who has the athletes to pull that off?

Personally, I like when they stuff the box. The runner either gets stuffed at the line or goes for a hugh gain. If you break the line with 8 guys in the box, it becomes a foot race to the end zone real quick.
The difference in my opinon is that teams that run the ball have more success at stopping the run because they get more practice at it. Stuffing the box only works if you have the talent and your defense plays at home (no weak links in the chain).

@Unimpressed… You appear to be confused, I’ll help you… Camden Co. is the best team in the State, that’s what the little #1 next to their name means. It’s part of a ranking system that helps define a programs performance amongst competitive peers- lower number denotes a higher quality team. Quite simple really, perhaps we could put that on your refrigerator?
I will even help you further… Camden Co. has that little #1 next to them because they earned it. Yes, predominantly due to games played in the past, but let’s remember back in 2000 no one on this post even heard of Camden Co., consequently they earned it over the past decade. That, combined with a undefeated season often yields high rewards. Still with me? Norcross hasn’t earned anything yet, in fact they have only been in the 3rd round once ever, correct? Yes, yes, I know that is in the past, but if Gwinnett football is so superior, then why wait until 2012 to turn it on? No fear, what they can earn is a chance to play a #1 team, maybe even win, but until that day you don’t have a leg to stand on.

if lowndes and camden are fortunate enough to neet again then i would expect another dog fight defensively and this time the game would be decided in my opinion by 10 points or less…….with neitherteam scoring over 21…..
with that said….both teams are going to have some very tough obsticles to overcome to make that happen
camden needs to pull for south gwinnett to beat parkview……bc if parkview wins then camden will have to beat grayson ….that is if grayson beats norcross
lowndes is going to have to beat hillgrove or marietta in rd 1…(both good teams) and then lovejoy on raod in rd 2 …..then it will be north gwinnett…or grayson or parkview in qtrs..one of those 3…then in the final round before dome my guess would say it would either be the #3 seed from region 1 or lassiter……and i would prefer to play lassiter

I wonder where you guys get this stuff on Propst. It’s really comical. Propst has always had the utmost respect for Camden’s coach. All he talked about last year was how good Camden was and how we couldn’t stop them. That’s the only reason he went for 2. He always speaks highly of Camden an Lowndes. Only person he’s called out is buzz Payne. And said Randy Mc lied about not knowing him, which everybody’s knows he does.
And the officials thing: too bad your teams don’t have a coach that will try and get a call here an there. It’s football guys. He’s a great coach that’s done great things to our program and gets kids to college. Stop believing what you read about on here from haters that don’t know what they’re talking about. Colquitt Fan….I’ve known of Propst since his days at Hoover. One of my best friends son, played for Propst at Hoover. I believe Propst is a very good coach, especially on offense. Which is one reason why IMO, his sideline antics don’t make sense! Any story that I’ve heard about the man, came from sources I trust. Those stories, along with what I’ve actually seen, helped me to form an opinion of him. I don’t know the man, I only know what I see and hear. But from what I’ve seen, the stories seem to be true. I’ve heard Camden’s only weakness is in the secondary, well were the type of team that could expose them. I expect us to score on Camden, the trick is stopping them and that will very hard to do an we likely won’t. I’ve said all along Camden is the cream of the crop and should win it all. I am going to say that outside of district, the two top teams in region 1 have not played that strong of a schedule. Camden and Lowndes have played 8 games out of region and of those 8 teams, only 1 has had a winning record and that was Camden playing Ocala who is at 5-4 and the 73rd ranked team in Florida according to Max Preps. Out of region, Colquitt has had the toughest schedule out of the region going 1-1 against current AJC top 10 teams in the state. Norcross has gone 2-0 against current AJC top 10 teams in the state.
This is not a negative on any team, with budgets you have to play teams that are near your area. It is just hard to determine who the best teams are based on schedules.

Unfortunately, the NEPOTISM will continue in it’s football program for another three years as well!!!
It’s a shame how this has been allowed and made most in authority look the other way since a lot of better players have been affected because of this by being short changed on playing time and earned positions.

It is what they are learning and the changes in rules is allowing teams that pass a greater advantage. It is also what the colleges are looking for and if Mom and Dad want to get Jr. that scholarship to a big time school, they will move to get in a program that will develop Jr.. I

We are treated as a step child in the Metro area. All the other counties get their own little section of write ups on saturday, not Clayton. We are the smallest metro county. Lovejoy has only 6,000-6,200 people. Imagine, 2000+ are high schoolers.

Sportsnut, Camden has the 8th rated pocket QB in the nation according to some recruiting sites. I don’t know his stats this year but he did throw for over 1300 last year. I think they would be fine.

WILDHOG2012 – I really like watching the Packers play and I pull for them except when its in the best interests of my Yella Cats for you to lose. Colquitt is a fun bunch to watch play football and were I living in Moultrie I’d be as avid a fan as you are. However, while I think your coach has a great football mind – he can really coach football – his antics on the sidelines are repulsive. I’m told by reliable sources who were on the Valdosta sideline, that when you guy were making your stirring comeback against us, he flashed the choke sign across the field. If that’s true, that’s bush and childish. It’s the sort of thing about which we question his qualifications to work around kids.
Notice that I did say Propst was in the middle of the field. I admit that I did not personally see the choke sign, although I trusted those who said they did. So I confess to being a rumormonger as far as that action is concerned and for that I sincerely apologize to all posters on this blog. In the future I will not attest to anything I did not witness.

I meant to say, “I did NOT say Propst was in the middle of the field.”

Well Colqiutt fan if what I said was not tru than you are calling our head coach a liar. And he is far from that. Let me be very clear. Coach Rush is an outstanding COACH. However, he lacks class and showed it last year after the Camden vs Colquitt last year. I dont mean any disrespect for your team only one man’s opinion of your coach. Heck, I like watching Colquitt play. Just glad I dont have to see that coach raging on the side lines every week. That stardom he got in Hoover has him messed up. I think again just one man’s opinon. Go Cats.

@ Yo == You need to check that schedule again. ,Camden played Peachtree Ridge (4-5), Johnson-Sav.(3-6), Beach(2-7), Tift (2-7), Brunswick(3-6), Vanguard(5-4), Coffee(5-4) Valdosta(6-3) and Lowndes(9-1). This in no way presents itself as an imposing schedule. I know our region is not the calibre of region 1. Then again, we do not claim to be the best. We do not say we play a tough schedule and then look at it and realize it was not so tough after all. Don’t worry though. Last year they said we had the weakest region inAAAA and two teams from that weak region were still standing in the final eight, with one going to the Championship game. I am not saying this is last year or the same thing is going to happen. What I am saying is that there is still football to be played and there will be a 6A Champion for the first time and many teams are qualified to be that. @ Bk == You need to realize that you will be coming to us. You will need all your stars. Both of them. I hope they are healthy because I would not want any reason other than the better team on that night won.
