AAAAAA blog: Camden defends No. 1 ranking … Four teams clinch region titles

Five things we noted from Class AAAAAA on Friday –

- No. 1-ranked Camden County is the champion of Region 1 after traveling to No. 4 Lowndes and winning 24-7. Lowndes scored on its opening drive, but Camden controlled the game from there. Camden (9-0) plays No. 10 Colquitt County (6-3) next week in an attempt to finish unbeaten in region play, but the No. 1 seed is secured.

- Hughes, Lassiter and McEachern joined Camden in clinching region titles. Hughes (8-1, 4-0) won its first in history, in Region 2, with a 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities. This is a 4-year-old south Fulton County school that had finished 2-7, 2-8 and 3-7 in its previous three seasons. McEachern (7-2, 6-0) won Region 4 with a 62-21 victory over Harrison. It’s McEachern’s third title in four seasons. Lassiter (9-0, 6-0) won Region 5 with a 28-14 victory over Roswell. It is Lassiter’s second region title, first since 20009.

- South Gwinnett remained in contention for the title in Region 8 with a 42-38 victory over Brookwood. QB Jordan Ramey passed for 382 yards and four touchdowns. South Gwinnett (7-2, 6-1) can clinch at least a No. 2 seed and home playoff game with a victory next week over Parkview (7-2, 6-1). For South to win the title, Brookwood would have to upset Grayson (8-1, 6-1). If Grayson and South Gwinnett win next week, Grayson is the champion.

- Walton is the No. 2 seed in Region 5, but might be missing Tyren Jones, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return in a 21-16 victory over Etowah. The win clinched a home playoff game for the Raiders. Jones returned to the field in the second half but did not play. He was expected to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Jones, who is committed to Alabama, entered the game with 1,675 yards rushing.

- Joshua Dobbs of Alpharetta might’ve become the first player to pass for 3,000 yards this season. Unofficial stats for Friday’s game – a 41-23 victory over Centennial – credited him with 382 yards and four touchdowns. That would put him at exactly 3,000 yards passing on the season with 24 touchdowns.

FYI – If Coffee beats Valdosta, and Camden beats Colquitt, next week, that will force a 3-way tie fir first place. The likely playoff teams then would be Coffee and Colquitt.

The tiebreaker, if I understand it, would be points allowed against those three teams + Lowndes and Camden. In other words, ”all playoff contending teams.”

That would eliminate one team. After that, it’s head-to-head.

As it stands, the points allowed are …

Colquitt – 64
Valdosta – 96
Coffee -97

Told vikingtilleye I would post. That three touchdown win he predicted almost came true for the other way. Good game. I am a little hoarse today. I also would think that barring a major upset Camden and Lowndes will go deep into the playoffs. I am a wildcat first but in the end I would like the title to come back to south Georgia. Just to run it in the faces of the ones that pitted the 7 teams from the south against every team north of Tift. And I will also say that I agree that Lowndes has a good D but Camden D was a little better.

okay I watched the replay and stand corrected. Lowndes only dropped 4 punt returns in the second half.

Hey bksmith I agree that short punt was the key to the touchdown. The only thing you seem to forget was there were about 10 Camden players around him when he punted that. Stop bad mouthing your players for playing poorly most of what you call mistakes were the direct result of defensive pressure and even the fumbles on punts. Let the punt go and there’s no risk of fumble. Your ifs and buts are a disgrace to your boys give it up. And that comment about being over the line of scrimmage is wrong but if you want to keep believing that then just tell yourself it was payback for the stupid block in the back call that brought back a big return.

hereswhatittakes there were 2 blocks in the back on that return and the announcers were wrong. They were blocks in the back.

Doesn’t matter though the best team won Friday night as expected.

Good win for Camden.

Glad you guys are in Region 1.

This year will be your easiest run through though as Region champs.

Hang around, it will not get any easier.

Now ya’ll take it to “Hereswhatittakes/confused/andsoontobesurprised” so he can get back to watching what he calls real football on Sunday afternoons.

For all you dunces down south…

Number one- The number of humble people supporting Camden can be counted on one hand. I’ve never seen such an arrogant fan base anywhere.

Number two- I’m talking about 2012, I know you boys like to live in the past but the teams thus year will win or lose on this years talent and coaching.

Number three–Lowndes and Camden are decent teams they just are not as good as you think they are. Neither one would win region 7 or 8 THIS YEAR!

Sorry to break it you Camden fans both the humble and the arrogant, but your team is not the best in the state this year.

Look it up….So good catch imjustsayingwhatimsaying!! “”Coach Herron said Tip my hat to Lowndes, they probably outplayed us and outcoached us, but we will take it. We will probably meet again in the playoffs”"

Here is an example of a Camden fan having a conversation with a Lowndes fan-

Camden fan- God what a great game last night you guys played GREAT but we played GREATER!

Lowndes fan-Yeah, too bad one of us had to lose because we are both so GREAT

Camden fan-I know, but when two GREAT TEAMS play one has to lose even though we both have GREAT coaching and GREAT players and GREAT fans

Lowndes fan-I couldn’t agree with you more we are GREAT and your team is GREAT

Camden fan-why won’t those idiots up north agree that we are so GREAT?

Lowndes fan-I don’t know, maybe because in order to see GREATNESS you have to be GREAT and really know your football and they just don’t know football like we do down here

Camden Fan-now that was a GREAT Point!!!

Lowndes fan-see you in the Dome for a GREAT Champiuonship game

Camden-Ok Mr. Lowndes, I really don’t know why the dummies at GHSA are making us play all the games to get to the Championship because anyone that knows anything about football knows that Region 1 is now the Greatest Region

Lowndes Fan-You got that right Mr. Camden we are the GREATEST

@Unimpressed

sorry, but a team’s “track record” in the playoffs DOES matter. Just go look at playoff history. teams that are there, year in and year out, know how to travel and know how to handle the atmosphere. Now, my biggest question for YOU, who have YOU played?

Yo… There were probably other blocks in the back on that play but the one they called was not. No problem though. The only problem I have is if you are going to call a foul then be consistent. If you think one thing is to be called a certain way than call it that way for both sides. I saw some that Lowndes did right in front of the same ref and no call. Just be consistent so the boys know how to play. It’s the same way in baseball call strikes the same way all game to both teams. That’s what good ref’ing is all about. I agree on the facemask penalties though they just got to keep their hands lower.

lovejoy will have to beat lowndes and grayson to be able to get to dome……THAT AINT HAPPENING

grayson is going to wind up winning region 8 bc they will beat brookwood and south gwinnett will beat parkview next week……which will put grayson on lovejoy and lowndes side of the bracket

Ppaady123-The trophy will come home to Gwinnett County just like it has the last two years. That will make it three years straight. And when you boys are scratching your heads and telling each other how life is not fair because the greatest team in the state, with the greatest players and the greatest coach didn’t win it, we will be celebrating another title for the best football played in the STATE…GWINNETT COUNTY.

I love it when you get a group of arrogant parents in a room and they are all lying to each other in regard to how great they are and how great their team is and they all know deep down it’s not the truth but they can’t tell the truth because they will be pushed out of the community. And then when things turn out differently all of you guys turn on each other and start pointing fingers. It is so funny yet so damn sad.

if you take away the 13 yd punt lowndes had when we were up 7-0 and take away the muffed punt by #5 at the 6 min mark then the game most likely winds up 10-7 with camden winning the game still………with that said ….our 2 best players were not playing. Say what you want but if we are both fortunate enough to meet again (going to be a very hard task) then lowndes will be able to even things out a lil more with our 2 best on the field.

At that point camden only had 143 yds of total offense……wound up with a lil over 200….like 212……i want to see some other team do that to them this year!!!!………..grayson is the only d that has that chance

I think you have confused me with someone else. I’ve never said Gwinnett didn’t play good football. I do think Region 4 will be over-matched against Region 1 in the 1st round of the playoffs. As it stands right now, it looks like Colquitt will come out of Region 1 as a 4 seed. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to deal with them in the 1st round.

Don’t get me wrong I am not saying that Camden is that good, but what I am saying is that they do have more talent than Lowndes and the QB match up isn’t even close. If you played Camden 100 times you might beat them 10-15 times. Not a very high percentage. If you guys get past the second round this year you guys would have overachieved.

Camden74-Nope not a clue. No one knows football like you boys down south.

The thing is that I have probably forgotten more about this game then most of you south georgia boys know. The wing T is a dinosaur and your defensive schemes although coached well, are vulnerable. And when I say that you guys were unimpressive last night I was trying to be nice because I have watched at least a half dozen teams that would take Camden to the woodshed. I also know that speaking to someone that is an unconcious incompetent is like speaking to a brick wall, so I’ll end this conversation by saying I told you so. Cut that out and paste it on your Fridge so when you are sitting at home watching two Gwinnett teams play for all the marbles a light may go on…albeit very, very dim.

How many 6A teams does Gwinnett have? Other than region 1 how many other teams are 6amorbthe highest class? My point is this if Gwinnett has a large number of 6A teams then they should have a proportionally large number of championships. Now compare the number of championships region 1 has and the championships Camden has and mathematically it should not be that way. So you can take your recent history and enjoy it if it makes you feel good but don’t think you are forever in the big time just because your county has more 6A teams. Even with a mathematical advantage the southern teams will take home more championships. Time will tell. Ask any coach if they could pick their opponent and he will tell you that he definitely won’t choose a team from region 1. Ask North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, NSWR, Newnan they will tell you who they would prefer to play when it’s win or go home.

All of the hostility is insane. Titles won in AAAAA are history and part of some great programs. Last year is last year, this is a new year and history will be made in AAAAAA. There is no reigning AAAAAA champion, one has yet to be crowned. The matter at hand, defense will win you a sate title, sak Grayson, that is the number one reason they were being ranked high in all polls, why? A defense that returned 10 starters, and an offense(Wing T) that ran with power. Norcross is a running team, who has the ability to flood passing zones, Lassiter is a passing team with a very effective running game. Camden is a finesse running team, with a passing game to keep you honest, not their forte, but will burn you if you get to close. They have a defense that is fast, and effective. From what I have seen this year, there is not any particular team that is dominant, but all are effective in what they do. The playoffs are around the corner in Ga and this will be one of the most competitive years in a while. What was and what could have been is gone? The regular season closes out thursday, friday and saturday. We will know who will be where then, until then we can all only speculate.

@ Your Highness74 == I give in. You have converted me. With your guidance and watching the best high school game I have ever seen, I have come to realize that I too am a Camden Fan. That was the best Defensive game, wasn;t it ? Nothing like a good slugfest. I now know that the Wildcats can run the ball very well. I also took note of that mighty defense you talked about. Lowndes is no slouch . They are very talented and will be a tough out come playoff time. They represented themselves well. Camden showed what a champion looks like. Three yards and a cloud of dust. Good old fashion football. Well, I hope you accept me into the family. It is kind of lonely being the main voice for a team that has no chance. I want to live right and I believe you can show me the way. I know a little about footbal but I will admit I can use some additional knowledge of the game and it’s finer points. What was the last thing…… oh, wait a minute, dang, I was sleep ! All the Gwinnett people you will get a chance to play Camden at some point. Be careful what you wish for. Right now the only thing Camden cares about is beating Colquitt next Friday. We will discuss the various perceived weaknesses each of us think the other one has later. See ya in a few weeks. Now look out Packers because Camden has something to show you or they may just say you don’t matter and play the middle school teams which will probably beat you anyway :)
