Five things we noted from Class AAAAAA on Friday –
- No. 1-ranked Camden County is the champion of Region 1 after traveling to No. 4 Lowndes and winning 24-7. Lowndes scored on its opening drive, but Camden controlled the game from there. Camden (9-0) plays No. 10 Colquitt County (6-3) next week in an attempt to finish unbeaten in region play, but the No. 1 seed is secured.
- Hughes, Lassiter and McEachern joined Camden in clinching region titles. Hughes (8-1, 4-0) won its first in history, in Region 2, with a 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities. This is a 4-year-old south Fulton County school that had finished 2-7, 2-8 and 3-7 in its previous three seasons. McEachern (7-2, 6-0) won Region 4 with a 62-21 victory over Harrison. It’s McEachern’s third title in four seasons. Lassiter (9-0, 6-0) won Region 5 with a 28-14 victory over Roswell. It is Lassiter’s second region title, first since 20009.
- South Gwinnett remained in contention for the title in Region 8 with a 42-38 victory over Brookwood. QB Jordan Ramey passed for 382 yards and four touchdowns. South Gwinnett (7-2, 6-1) can clinch at least a No. 2 seed and home playoff game with a victory next week over Parkview (7-2, 6-1). For South to win the title, Brookwood would have to upset Grayson (8-1, 6-1). If Grayson and South Gwinnett win next week, Grayson is the champion.
- Walton is the No. 2 seed in Region 5, but might be missing Tyren Jones, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return in a 21-16 victory over Etowah. The win clinched a home playoff game for the Raiders. Jones returned to the field in the second half but did not play. He was expected to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Jones, who is committed to Alabama, entered the game with 1,675 yards rushing.
- Joshua Dobbs of Alpharetta might’ve become the first player to pass for 3,000 yards this season. Unofficial stats for Friday’s game – a 41-23 victory over Centennial – credited him with 382 yards and four touchdowns. That would put him at exactly 3,000 yards passing on the season with 24 touchdowns.
FYI – If Coffee beats Valdosta, and Camden beats Colquitt, next week, that will force a 3-way tie fir first place. The likely playoff teams then would be Coffee and Colquitt.
The tiebreaker, if I understand it, would be points allowed against those three teams + Lowndes and Camden. In other words, ”all playoff contending teams.”
That would eliminate one team. After that, it’s head-to-head.
As it stands, the points allowed are …
Colquitt – 64
Valdosta – 96
Coffee -97

First let me say that Lowndes has a great facility and their band really rocks!! Best pregame ceremony I think I have seen in high school.
Next Ya’ll did an awesome job stopping the run. We could not run at all on you guys! It was a great game. I saw it live and then came home and watched it again on my DVR. To me the difference maker in this game was Bryce Ramsey. The offenses and defenses were mirror images of each other with the exception of the QB.
After watching it on TV when I got home, I am not so sure about the second facemask penalty on the first drive. It looked like he might have gotten all jersey but it was hard to tell. Also that block in the back penalty on the punt return was bogus. Totally clean hit. But other than that, excellent game. The Vikings are a good team and we will probably run into you again before it is over. Like I said, I was very impressed with your facility and I really liked the band. And I don’t usually pay much attention to the band!
The Packers are next to complete the clean sweep!

I saw it this way Camdens defense shut Lowndes down. The first drive Camden gave up 30 yds. on the penalties. Shut them down. Conserative offense by Camden, don’t show em nothing, pound it between the tackles. Good games Cats. Next bring it to Moultrie.

I have heard enough of 2 best didn’t play ,it’s football, put your best 11 out and snap the ball. I beleive I am a Lowndes hater because of your silly remarks.

Camden vs Lowndes game…….. I watched the game on ESPN U and here are my thoughts on both teams. The difference between both teams is that Camden has a balanced offense. They have a great running game and a very good QB that can throw the ball, which keeps good defenses like Lowndes guessing. Lowndes’s offense is run, run, run, with no balance. They have several good running backs, but you can’t go deep in the playoffs with just a running attack. A big up front defense with fast linebackers will control it and that is what we saw in this game. Sorry Lowndes…. I don’t see this team as a State contender. I will say it again…. It will come down to Grayson or Camden. Grayson is big and fast with 44 seniors returning from last years championship team, but I have not seen Norcross play and I have heard that they are loaded. The best thing that has happend to Grayson is the lost to Parkview and to get that # 1 in the nation monkey off it’s back. Since that loss, they have destroyed every opponent they have played. I think that Grayson will probably travel to Camden in the 3rd round.

BK…. I know your passionate about your team, but last night’s game was total Camden dominance. Sometimes you have to chalk it up like a man and congratulate the other team. Read my previous comment, Lowndes does not have a balanced offense. They reminded me of a City of Atlanta team last night on offense with very talented players, but no offensive scheme.

@ bksmith14 – How you like the QB we gave you guys? If the games comes down to #14 having to win to throw for Lowndes to win, the Vikes will be in trouble!!!! I must say I was impressed with the Vikes defense last nite. I do think Camden played conservative. Thats was probably because Camden didn’t feel Lowndes offense could score enough points to win.
I also have a question for bksmith14 and all the rest of the Lowndes insiders. You had a 80yd drive,( most because of penalties aginst Camden), with #4 running the ball out of the single set backfield.
Why in the HELL did Mac go away from that the rest of the game??? Why didn’t #4 get 40 carries last nite????

What a game last night. Great atmosphere, cordial fans, intense defense from both teams, exactly what you expect when these to schools hook it up. Enough bad calls to go around for both teams. It is unfortunate when the officials are as noticeable as the players…Was impressed with Lowndes ability and speed which prevented us from running wide…just had the sense that Camden was not going to allow itself to be beaten…Give it up to Lowndes, the teams that meet them in the playoffs are in for a rude awakening.
Heading to Colquit next week and as usual our Wildcats will strap it up and play like we always do…So glad we moved to Region 1…playing these types of games will serve the Cats well as they head into the playoffs…Hard to believe there is a better defense in the state than our Wildcats..sure they have some surprises on offense waiting for the playoffs
Again great game and look forward to you visiting us at Chris Gilman stadium next year…Go Wildcats!!!

Camden fans are we really going to argue and say Camden dominated. We all know that is not the case. Here are the stats. Camden had 83 yards rushing 132 yards passing. Lowndes 118 rushing 3 passing. Both teams had 9 first downs. Camden 44 plays to Lowndes 40 Camden’s highest rusher had 29 yards and their longest rush was 14. Lowndes highest was 49 yards and longest 29 yards. Camden had 11 penalties 83. Most for face masking as they were trying to decapatate our players. LOL. Lowndes 6 penalties for 55. The big difference was two big pass plays on for 33 yards set up a score and the second for 72 yards for a TD. Both times caught the DB looking into the backfield. Being young will do that Also Lowndes muffed the punt and threw an interception. Camden also had the ball 5 min longer which was due to running down the clock. Basically both defenses played one hell of a game. And he who made the least amount of mistakes won. Congrats Camden on a well played game. Hope to see us both in the Dome

Lowndes played a great game last nite!!! I think they were more emotionally charged up for Camden than Camden was for them. That probably had alot to do with the home field and the injuries to LANG/BURGMAN. However, Lowndes has got to fix that passing game. #14 looked like his old self when he was at Valdosta. I knew he had played way over his head in that Valdosta game.
The key to this game for Lowndes on defense was their speed on the d-line. Camden is a east-west wing-t team. They really don’t run alot of power stuff. Lowndes speed on the d-line was able to nuetralized most of Camdens speed stuff therefore allowing Lowndes to play 2 deep safety and keep Camdens passing game in check for the most part. Camden is mostly a big play team on offense. They really don’t sustain alot of long drives. Lowndes did a great job of taking away the big plays.

One heck of a game last night between 2 of the best teams in south Georgia as well as the state…..everyone was saying it was going to be blowout but i knew it was going to be a grudge match and a real true test for us(CAMDEN)for 4 qtrs and i really think it will help us heading into the playoffs….not overlooking Colquitt on next week but i really think we needed this type of game to test us as a team and coaching staff as a whole…..yes its true Lowndes was missing 2 key players and i wouldve love to see them compete on last night but a smart decision by Coach MAC to keep them out to be ready for post season play and hopefully a deep run into the playoffs…..Good luck to both teams and bring the SHIP home to REGION 1……GOOO CATS!!!

Logistically the concrete palace sucks. It’s the worse stadium I have seen in a long time. The designer should be shot. Can’t go up the steps but one at a time. The ramps entering the visitors side was so steep it’s a wonder they haven’t been sued so many times. You can’t even go in and find a seat. I hope the home side is better but I don’t think so. I will say that you guys had the best sound system I’ve heard but get the lights fixed on the time clock. I also have to like the way Camden not only shut down Lowndes offense but shut their band up as well. Did like the pre game show but wish we visitors could’ve seen the whole halftime show without the big signs blocking us. Sounded good but wished we could see too.
Synopsis of the game. Both teams got one score with the help of penalties….Lowndes on 30 yards on first drive and Camden on a pass interference. Camden probably had no chance to catch that ball anyway. So take both theses scores out. Can’t argue with a 47 yard field goal from the backup kicker. Long return called back on bogus block in the back call shoulda been 7 but not. Long pass great catch Camden executed Lowndes was beat so Camden up. Second half kickoff big return. Lowndes fumbles punts, did you see what Camden did on several punts. They didn’t even attemp a return because they did not want to risk a fumble. Learn from real coaching. Final score Camden executed Lowndes did not. Bottom line is both defenses played good but Camden’s team was just 342% better than Lowndes was. That’s 24-7 in case you were wondering.

I agree with sportsnut. Camden and Lowndes are good football teams but highly beatable. I love it when someone puts your teams in proper perspective and you guys want to tell everyone that they don’t know football. The truth is that you guys are stuck in the ’80’s as it relates to football. There is a reason why college football and the pros abandon the wing T. If you guys don’t want to hear the truth go to the Ga Vent where all you blowhards can lie to each other and tell each other how great Sourh Georgia football is!!!
The fact is we all got to peek behind the curtain last night thanks to ESPNU and you guys are not that good. Read my last line again. It means you are good football teams just not great like you try to articulate. Grayson sends Lowndes home in round 3 and Norcross does the same with Camden.
Sorry to pop your bubble South Georgia but Gwinnett plays better football.

Unimpressed…stuck in the 80’s huh. Three state championships for Camden. Camden team of the decade. Lowndes numerous state championships. Running the 80’s offense. Tell me again how many championships you have won? Grayson last year running that old outdated offense. It’s not sexy but it is effective. Watching on tv is not the same as going toe to toe. Ask NSWR. O’yea remember defenses win championship in any league and Georgia high school is the same. I personally don’t know anything about Norcross but if their defense isn’t up to the task they will go home. Ask anyone that knows anything about football and they will tell you a good defense beats a good offense every time. So bring it on because I know Camden has the defense and if you bring that new fangled spread offense they will shut it down as well and when you get up there and concentrate on stopping the run look out cause a 57 yard touchdown pass is coming.

mistermak I actually saw the face mask on both occassions clearly. Trust me if it wasn’t so I would admit it.
Also, believe it or not I saw 2 block in the backs on the punt return but they could only throw 1 flag.
I have not watched the replays on tv though. I will.
I had predicted a few weeks ago that Lowndes would either win by 3 or lose by 14. So I was admitting that I felt Camden was the better team. That prediction was before we had our 2 players hurt. After that I was very concerned about our ability to stay on the field with Camden at all. I think we can all admit the game was much closer than the 17 point differential. Camden had a total of a little over 200 yards of total offense. Much of it coming on 1 pass play at the end of the game. Lowndes offense was totally shut down after that initial drive. A young team who I hope has 5 more games to continue improving. If so, look out.
I have been extremely impressed with Lowndes coaching staff this year and how they have brought this team along. They deserve a ton of credit. Not even Lowndes fans expected in the beginning of the year for us to be playing for a region title the last game of the season. We knew we were young, and Camden, Colquit (and to listen to Valdosta fans, Valdosta
) were the favorites this year.
But there we were down 10-7 at half time to what many consider the best team in the state and with out our 2 best playmakers. Amazing. And it took an errant Lowndes pass for Camden to have a chance for that field goal. Our qback had a bad night and Camden deserves much credit for that. I think though he was trying to hard to carry the team given our 2 playmakers out because he has played much better this year and Camden did not pressure him any more than other teams had.
Regarding Camdens conservative play calling lets be real. That was good coaching. The only way Lowndes was going to beat Camden on this particular night was if the defense won the game for Lowndes by Camden mistakes or turnovers. Except for that last pass Lowndes had Camden covered all night when they did attempt to pass. So why chance it when you have a lead and you are smothering the opposing teams offense?
Camden74 that is why Herron coaches and you don’t.

unimpressed the only teams from Gwinnett winning state championship lately are those who are playing S. Ga. type football. The only exception being that embarrassingly weak year in Ga. football when Brookwood pulled it out of the hat while giving up 600 yards on defense to a suspect Colquit team.
sportsnut has yet to have a team prove they know what good football is. So his opinion doesn’t count. Since you are in agreement with him I guess that puts you in the same territory. By the way, who is Norcross? I’ve heard of Grayson but Norcross? Are they a Lovejoy wanna be?

Todd, you meant to say a tie for fourth place in Region 1. Camden and Lowndes have a history of “grind it out” football. There was the one exception, the playoff blowout during Coach McPherson’s initial title run with the Raiders. There is silence on Camden’s dominance of Region 1 and too many excuses. Both teams have a chance at the title run. It is difficult to win 5 postseason games. Go Camden.

Don’t think that those of us who watch high school football was expecting a blowout by Camden. Afterall if you look at the other side of the coin, Lowndes was avg 36 or 37 points a gain with over 279 yds rushing a game, but was held to 125 yds total for the game, onlky allowed 35 yds in the second half, yes Camden only had 215 total yds. The game was decided where I figured it would be special teams, who had the turnovers would lose. Lowndes coach, frankly out coached Camdens coach. The difference between these two football teams is passing. Camden proved that they were more than a trick pony with #4, #1 and #14 running. The game plan for Lowndes was to shut down J J Green on offense and it was accomplished, but the return to start the 2nd half I question kicking it to him. Both teams will go deep in the playoffs. Everyone can like their teams, but facts are facts and stats are stats. But the game is played on the field and determined on the field. Defense wins championships, offense wins games.

How is Ramsey the difference maker in a run offense? He is immobile and has demonstrated no promise as a passer outside of camps. That analysis is dim. Camden’s offense is more effective with a quaterback who can make plays with his legs. The kid is a better punter than quaterback and will likely have a shot to play on Sundays in that capacity. Georgia quaterbacks are historically overated.

Thats the only reason yall pro scored the first td……starting at our own 40
Lowndes defesne did its job……cmaden was conservative? lol……give me a break…jj green had 18 yds rushing on 10 carries……..ramsey was the diff maker and thats the bottom line…..and camdens defesne shut down our offense after the first drive….this was all done without our 2 best players on the field…

what game did you watch last night? The Lowndes defense did play a great game. But it’s asking a lot of them to constantly defend poor field position. the Lowndes offensive plan was to ask #14 to do something they hadn’t asked him to do all year; make plays. He’s spent the entire year handing off to #2 and #21, yet last night he was supposed to be the offensive leader against the best AAAAAA team in the state? Really? Who out-coached who?

as for the lowndes and camden game……i knew going in that we were going to have our work cut out for us with #21 and #2 on the sideline watching in street clothes.
alex did play bad…..and we made to many mistakes to win
take away the muffed punt…and the 13 yd giftwrapped punt from our punter and camden may only have 10 points at the end of thenight……….he bottom line is that both defesnes shut the others offenses down….camden had 143 yds of total offense if you take away the last td pass which should have never been allowed due to ramsey being almost 2 ydspast the line of scrimmage when he released the ball…….
lowndes will be hell to beat in the playoffs if we get our 2 studs back..we can beat camden with these 2 on the field in my honest opinion…..hope we meet again

@Sportsnut & Unimpressed. The Camden County Wildcats are very humble, we just go about our business week by week. No one in the state of Ga will ever be impressed with our style of play so I guess we will just continue winning championships and force people to recognize. Every year its something different, they say you guys don’t play anyone,HUH? How many teams in the state of Ga can say they have played the likes of teams like Alabama Hoover, Miami Central, St Thomas Aquinas, and other great teams from the states of Ohio and South Carolina. We like it this way, continue to doubt the Wildcats,LOL, you guys are too funny.
Another point I would like to make is this, lets give credit Lowndes for playing one hell of a game. Holding us to just over 200 yards total offense is impressive. Coach Herron is a very smart guy, if he really wanted to open up the offense more points could have been scored. But why? When Camden went up 17-7 early in the 3rd Qrt, Coach Herron shut the offense down, sort of like he did against Coffee. Our Defense was playing great so why take unnessary risks against a great defensive unit like Lowndes. Coach had the pulse of the game and executed it like a doctor. And just when everyone thought Camden was simply going to run the clock out, Coach conducted surgery and went deep for a TOUCHDOWN!!!! So I hope you don’t think for a minute that Camden is just a running team. Check the stats, #12 has almost 20 passing touchdowns this year. Not bad for a team that runs most of the time.
