AAAAAA blog: Camden defends No. 1 ranking … Four teams clinch region titles

Five things we noted from Class AAAAAA on Friday –

- No. 1-ranked Camden County is the champion of Region 1 after traveling to No. 4 Lowndes and winning 24-7. Lowndes scored on its opening drive, but Camden controlled the game from there. Camden (9-0) plays No. 10 Colquitt County (6-3) next week in an attempt to finish unbeaten in region play, but the No. 1 seed is secured.

- Hughes, Lassiter and McEachern joined Camden in clinching region titles. Hughes (8-1, 4-0) won its first in history, in Region 2, with a 17-13 victory over Tri-Cities. This is a 4-year-old south Fulton County school that had finished 2-7, 2-8 and 3-7 in its previous three seasons. McEachern (7-2, 6-0) won Region 4 with a 62-21 victory over Harrison. It’s McEachern’s third title in four seasons. Lassiter (9-0, 6-0) won Region 5 with a 28-14 victory over Roswell. It is Lassiter’s second region title, first since 20009.

- South Gwinnett remained in contention for the title in Region 8 with a 42-38 victory over Brookwood. QB Jordan Ramey passed for 382 yards and four touchdowns. South Gwinnett (7-2, 6-1) can clinch at least a No. 2 seed and home playoff game with a victory next week over Parkview (7-2, 6-1). For South to win the title, Brookwood would have to upset Grayson (8-1, 6-1). If Grayson and South Gwinnett win next week, Grayson is the champion.

- Walton is the No. 2 seed in Region 5, but might be missing Tyren Jones, who left the game in the first half with a knee injury and did not return in a 21-16 victory over Etowah. The win clinched a home playoff game for the Raiders. Jones returned to the field in the second half but did not play. He was expected to get an MRI on Saturday morning. Jones, who is committed to Alabama, entered the game with 1,675 yards rushing.

- Joshua Dobbs of Alpharetta might’ve become the first player to pass for 3,000 yards this season. Unofficial stats for Friday’s game – a 41-23 victory over Centennial – credited him with 382 yards and four touchdowns. That would put him at exactly 3,000 yards passing on the season with 24 touchdowns.

FYI – If Coffee beats Valdosta, and Camden beats Colquitt, next week, that will force a 3-way tie fir first place. The likely playoff teams then would be Coffee and Colquitt.

The tiebreaker, if I understand it, would be points allowed against those three teams + Lowndes and Camden. In other words, ”all playoff contending teams.”

That would eliminate one team. After that, it’s head-to-head.

As it stands, the points allowed are …

Colquitt – 64
Valdosta – 96
Coffee -97

Looks like Lassiter will get Brookwood in round 1. They are gonna have to find a way to avoid those lulls in the middle of games once playoffs start.

Get well soon T Jones. If Nicky Satan withdraws offer , UGA will have you.

Congrats Camden Co. on the Region Title!! Everyone thought it was gonna be a blow-out – didn’t happen. Defense wouldn’t allow that to happen. This is Lowndes not Beach!! I ‘m sure Camden knows Tre Jackson huh?? LOL….He lowered the “BOOM” on a couple of occasions!! Lowndes stuck it to them tonight!! And J.J. Green couldn’t really get anything going. Got hit in the back field too many times. Our defense played great tonight even with a loss. I’m proud of the Vikings!! It wasn’t suppose to be close and we held the high powered offense of Camden Co. to their lowest points of the year. Can’t wait for Burgman and Lang to return in time for the playoffs. All in all, great game by both squads. Hope we meet again when we’re at full strength!! Again, congrats to Camden Co. on the win!!

Oh yeah, is there another stadium in GA. with an atmosphere like Martin Stadium?? We know how to do it and we do it right!! I know, I was there….

Agreed Heisenberg. Was watching Lassiter online and the 2nd qtr and first half of 3rd qtr was a poor display of some fundemental tackling and coverage. Roswell has a good team though that has improved all year. Depending on their class breakdown, they could have a very solid team next year.

Printz had a couple passes that were right off of the WR fingertips too that cost Lassiter a couple big plays. Looked like perfect passes just one of those things if a guy is a little taller with longer arms e gets those.

Need a strong game at Etowah to get focused for the playoffs. Brookwood has a good team and will want some revenge for last year season opener at the Dome if they do indeed get the 4 seed.

5 time….we are goin to be hell to beat when we get lang and burgman back if our d can lay like they did tonight…..24-7 was not any indication on how close this game was……….if we dont muff a punt with 6 min to go we have the ball 1st and 10 on camdens 45…..but #5 who was filling in for #2 lang muffed the punt…which was his 3rd muff of the night.

Camden is good….very good…..but i like our chances if we can meet again if we get lang and burgman back…..would be a much closer game

Congratulations to Lassiter for securing the Region Title. It was a blast last year to reach the semis by winning three playoff games on the road, but I can’t wait to start a playoff run this year at home. Go Trojans!

Yep I am (after this game against Camden) more excited about our chances in the playoffs.

bksmith14….I agree!! Good point on the turnovers!! As a matter of fact, we did the exact same thing in 09 when we played Camden. That second touchdown should have never happened tonight!! We stopped them on 4th down, but nooooooooo, we get called for holding!! They get the ball back and score!! :-( We seem to always commit the costliest mistakes in a critical situations!! SMH….I also like our chances if we shall meet again!! Most people are shocked that Lowndes shut down Camden’s running game!! I don’t understand why?? That’s what Lowndes do lol…I mean, didn’t Lowndes prove that in 04 and 07?? What would be any different tonight?? All I know is I wasn’t shocked!! LOL….Burgman and Lang should have plenty of time to heal before the playoffs start….Starting tonight!!

J.J. Green is an outstanding player no doubt but he is no Greg Reid!! They shouldn’t use him for running the ball!! IMO – He’s great at the DB position and on special teams!! He got shut down tonight and he got caught behind the line of scrimmage on some occasions!! I can’t remember his name but he lowered the “BOOM” on J.J one good time!! I mean he met him at the line of scrimmage and stuck him!!

Since we played Thursday night, my wife and I decided to go to the Brookwood – South Gwinnett game. It was a barn burner for sure! South won in the last 2 minutes 42-38. The interesting thing was I did not see a lot of basic football. It was big plays or nothing for the most part. In the first quarter, the South quarterback had all night and tomorrow too while dropping to throw! It was crazy! Brookwood has speed, speed, speed when their backs can break loose. R8 just got a little clearer but I sure would like South to beat Parkview next week. After watching South the past three weeks against the Rams, Archer and now Brookwood, I think they have a good chance. Certainly not a sure thing because Parkview is a good team but I will be surprised if the Panthers roll over the Comets.

bk and 5 Time…….I was going to congratulate you guys on a good defensive game. But since you seem not to realize what exactly went on tonight, let me lay it out for ya. I don’t agree with Herron going conservative on offense, but I understand. Camden managed to win the game using minimal offense. They played just enough offense to win. Better still, they didn’t expose anything that people haven’t already seen. I guess that’s why he’s the Head Coach, with three State Titles and not me! Please tell me what made your HC kick to J.J. Green? If you noticed, Camden ran the ball right into the teeth of the Lowndes defense all night long. There were times when Lowndes had 9-10 men in the box, Camden still ran the ball straight at you. Most of J.J.’s runs were between the tackles. But what you guys weren’t expecting was the running of the other backs. Those guys hurt your defense more than J.J. did. If Camden and Lowndes are fortunate enough to meet again in the playoffs, Camden will win again, by 3 TDs! :-D

camden74…….yall ran the ball 35 times and had 78 yds rushing…….thats barely over 2 yds per rush……brice ramsey beat lowndes with his arm tonight……….not camdens running game……camden is the same ol camden….plus brice ramsey….when he is gone…yalls passing game will be also…..but he is not so enjoy it the rest of the year.

bottom line is our defense took it to camden all night long……with camdens BEST team on the field all night…….yall had 210 total yards of offense the entire night.

we only had like 130 yds………but we also did not have our 2 best players………..burgman #21 senior has almost 800 yds rushing and 9 tds this year. That was a huge loss not having him on our offense and #2 lang…….he doesnt run that much but has 265 yds rushing and 5 tds in limited action. His main job is safety and kickoffs and ount returns……

Yall won the game…….but yall beat a lowndes team without its 2 best players…i am not saying we win the game if they play…but the game is closer if they play

It was 17-7 with 6 min to go in 4th and yall are punting out of the back of the endzone and we muff punt……..which #5 muffed about 4 tonight.

Good Job camden 74………..yall have a hell of a team…but i know yall did not face the best lowndes had to offer tonight. yall won……congrats…but the real season starts in 2 weeks

IN my opinion………..right now there is not a better team in the state of Ga in class 6aaaaaa than CAMDEN COUNTY……..

The lowndes vikings lost ……but we played a great game to not have our 2 best players in the game…..they mean that much to lowndes……..WE ARE YOUNG guys……not a lot of experience behind these 2 seniors……..#4 ahmad brown…..who scored for lowndes is a 10th grader….

Lowndes can play with anybody and i think we can possibly beat camden if we had our 2 best players…..they account for over 50% of our scoring each game…..so add that to tonight and who knows what would have happened

bksmith14

2:02 am

camden74………yall have an excellent defense…….one of the top 3 defenses in the state………i dont think yall are better than us on defense though…….its a toss up. Yall have brice ramsey…we dont…that is the BIG diff………he is outstanding. Dont take me wrong……….i am not syaing we beat yall uf we had our 2 best but i really think its a much closer diff game……

Jj green only made one big play all night…the 72 yd kickoff return to open the 2nd half…..which led to yall scoring…lang and burgman for lowndes have the big play making capability that he does

ESPNU…….they made sure everyone knew our 2 best players were not playing…….they WOULD have made a diff……..maybe not enough for us to win……..maybe they would have

there were 3 or 4 key plays in this game that made the game swing in camdens favor. The int that our qb threw was his own fault…the guy was open…had that not happened ….we go on and prob score at least 3……..

Yall won the game……..maybe we will meet again. good luck to yall the rest of the way. i hope yall beat everyone yall play except us if we play again

Camden74….Because, ya’ll are the #1 Team!! That should speak for itself. And besides, we was not suppose to compete with yall!! Ya’ll were suppose to run and pass up and down the field on us!! Our “DEFENSE” wasn’t suppose to shut you guys down!! I believe that’s why, yes??

bksmith14

ramsey was past the line of scrimmage on that last td for camden ………..watch it on espnu replay if youdont believe me. game was over anyway…but ust saying.

i am excited for lowndes ….if we get burgman and lang back we got a shot.

#14 our qb………he played his worst game tonight. I dont know what was wrong with him…guys were open. He was 6-7 for 132 yds passing against valdosta…..3 of those passes were to burgman. camdens defense had a lot to do with it……but a lot of it was he just had a bad night…he could not pull the trigger

bksmith14

November 3rd, 2012
2:10 am

camdens defense is on par with grayson…but i got to go with grayson as having the best d in the state….they just dont have brice ramsey……graysons qb is nowhere near as good…not even a contest. I would pick camden in that game with no hesitation.

bk & 5-time, The Camden -v- Lowndes game was the best defensive battle all year. I know Lowndes was missing 2 top running backs. Maybe it would’ve made a difference, but then again, maybe not. Thats how these 2 teams got here, DEFENSE. Camden has only given up an avg. 5.6 pts per game. Lowndes gave up only 12.2 pts per game. Camden has alot of seniors and Lowndes is a very young team. I’m a BIG Camden fan and alumni, played there in the early 80’s. I can’t wait to see what Lowndes does in about 2 years. They should be awesome! But Camden is awesome too. Brice Ramsey, goin to Georgia next year?! JJ Green too! Camden & Lowndes are gonna put out many of great battles in the future now that they are in the same region. ESPN & all of the sportcasters are calling region 1 the SEC of highschool football in the NATION! I hope that we as a region, get to keep the State Title reign down here in our region. Don’t you?

bksmith14

November 3rd, 2012
2:22 am

bigcatjt…..lowndes as a team had only given up 10.6 points per game coming into tonight……..the varsity defense had only given up 8.2 points per game……

i just want to say this……camden is a great football team…….we may not have beat them with our 2 best…….but we shot ourselves in the foot tonight 2 times and both were costly…and really cost us the game……the first punt to camden which wnet about 13 yds…..set camden up with the ball on our 43 1st down and 10……….and then when we muffed the punt…….that was ballgame.

if we clean a few things up and get #2 and #21 back…lowndes will be very dangerous

i dont see any team beating camden this year…but if i had to pick 3 teams that have a shot…it woud be grayson…norcross…and lowndes (if we get another shot and #21 #2 are healthy)……..lovejoy is good also…but i dont know enough about them….they loss 14-7 at colquitt

bk……My plan was to cut you some slack. But you don’t seem to understand what happened in the game tonight. Herron played conservative football tonight. I paid a lot of attention to play calling, J.J. seemed to be the game’s sacrificial lamb. The entire Lowndes defense was focused on him and they paid dearly for it. They were run blitzing all night long. The other backs and receivers did exactly what they were supposed to while everyone was keying on J.J…..What purpose did it serve? The play that Camden used to score it’s final TD, I was waiting for it ALL NIGHT LONG!

Now, let’s talk about Camden’s defense. On your first and only drive of the night, you know the ONE that I’m talking about. The 80 yard drive, the one where 30 of the 80 yards came on penalties, remember that? How many rushing yards did Lowndes have tonight, as a matter of fact, how many total yards did Lowndes have? If you’re going to beat Camden, you need to have a very good, balanced offense and a very good defense……. Camden’s defense played lights out!

Once Camden went up 17-6, I knew what was coming. Camden did what I dislike, ultra conservative cruise mode. But I understand, why show any more of your offense than you need to? Lowndes played pretty good defense. But they still gave up 24 points, and that was with Camden playing conservative offense. If both teams are fortunate enough to meet in the Title game, Camden will win by three TDs! :-D

brice ramseys do not come along very often….camden needs to find a way to win a title while he is still at camden….

5-Time……Lowndes’ defense gave up 24 points and LOST the game. Camden went totally conservative after the first drive of the 3rd quarter. Camden was trying to win the game, not embarrass your team! Do you really think if they had gone all out in the second half, they would not have scored any more points? I’ll ask you the same question I asked bk, how many total yards did Lowndes have? I know, y’all are just happy not to have been blown out, I understand……. :-D

Camden needs to hope parkview loses to south gwinnett or else grayson may meet yall in the qtrs if yall reach them. grayson would have to beat norcorss which i think they would, i would however pick camden to beat grayson

bksmith14

viking fan……..in order to see camden again we will have to make it to dome…..having to go through lovejoy on the road in rd 2 and then prob grayson at grayson in qtrs…..being that they are prob going to be region 8 champs since parkview will prob lose to south gwinnett imo

Camden74….Everything you posted was suppose to happen, yes?? You guys have the better team this year, yes?? So, I’m not mad at all about the loss. I’m really not. I’m just impressed by our efforts minus our injured players. You mentioned penalties on our drive. What about all of our penalties that also helped you out, yes?? It goes both ways!! Most of your points was because of our penalties, yes?? It doesn’t matter now, you guys won. I’m just ready for the playoffs. You blow every body else in the region slap out, but when it comes to Lowndes, you played conservative?? I don’t believe that for a second!! Lowndes was the only team Camden has played all year and didn’t score 40+ points. Maybe our defense had something to do with it, yes??

bksmith14

if you take out the bad punt where our punter punted the ball 14 yds when we were up 7-0 and if we dont muff the punt with 6 min to go….then the game may have had a diff outcome…..def would have been a lot closer…..

not having #2 and #21 tonight hurt us on offense more than most know. when you take away 1000 yds rushing combined and 14 tds….on offense it hurts… these 2 also are on our kickoff coverage and do the punt and kickoff returing. It really hurt lowndes tonight.

I am not making excuses……camden won…we made the mistakes….they did not

but we have more points on the board and less less mistakes in the game had these 2 been able to play. i hope we get another shot with them on the field

5-Time…….I’m not saying Lowndes’ defense didn’t play well, they did. But I don’t believe Camden’s goal was to score a lot of points. You did notice how conservatively they played after they went up 17-7, right? But let’s be real, other than the first drive, which was aided by two 15 yard penalties, Camden’s defense shut Lowndes’ offense down, totally! I believe Camden’s philosophy was to win the game, whatever it took. The score didn’t matter, win by 40 or win by 1, it’s still a win. Good luck to you guys in the playoffs. Hopefully, Camden and Lowndes will meet again, in the Dome. :-D

Conservative must have been the plan all night. They did the same things in the first quarter as they did in the forth. I’m sorry but that was a little like park ball. I am hearing all kinds of talk about this game. There is really nothing to talk about. Who impressed ? No individuals, neither team. Nothing special. As I said before, if this is the best, there are going to be many, many upsets.
