AAAAAA blog: Five teams can clinch region titles Friday; ESPNU to televise Camden-Lowndes

Five Class AAAAAA teams can clinch region titles Friday. Here are some the things to watch for this weekend in the highest class:

- No. 1 Camden County (8-0, 4-0) plays at No. 4 Lowndes (9-0, 5-0) in a game televised by ESPNU. This is the first time that these state powers have been in the same region. They’ve played in the playoffs four times since 2003, and the winner of their game has gone on to win the state title. Camden has been criticized for its easy region. Camden is 86-0 in region play since 2000, which until this year was old, weak Region 3-AAAAA. Region 1 fans have felt Camden got an easier draw in the state playoffs that greased the way to three state championships. With a chip on its shoulder, Camden has won its four Region 1 games by an average score of 43-7. But now Camden travels to Lowndes and No. 10 Colquitt County to finish the regular season.

- Perhaps a more life-or-death game in Region 1 is the one between Coffee and Colquitt County in Moultrie. Both are 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the region. The loser, especially if it is Colquitt, could be out of the playoff picture.

- Hughes (7-1, 3-0) can clinch Region 3 with a victory over Tri-Cities (3-5, 1-2). Hughes, a 4-year-old school, has never won a region.

- McEachern (6-2, 6-0) can clinch Region 4 with a victory over Harrison (4-4, 3-3). It would be McEachern’s third region title in four seasons. Note that the Region 4 champion will play Region 1’s fourth-place team (probably Colquitt County or Coffee) in the first round.

- Lassiter (8-0, 5-0) can clinch Region 5 with a victory over Roswell (2-6, 1-4). It would be Lassiter’s second title in history. The other came in 2009. The Region 5 champion will get a fourth-place Region 8 team in the first round. (See below.)

- The best metro Atlanta game will be South Gwinnett at Brookwood in Region 8. Both are 6-2 overall, 5-1 in the region. Although they are part of a four-way tie in Region 8 with Grayson (7-1, 5-1) and Parkview (6-2, 5-1), neither is likely to win the region. But the loser is almost certainly to be on the road in the first round of the playoffs. Parkview is the one that controls its destiny. Victories over Berkmar and South Gwinnett would give the Panthers the title. Brookwood could win the region by beating South Gwinnett and Grayson if Parkview loses one of its remaining games.

Projected region champions –

1 – Camden/Lowndes winner
2 – Lovejoy (clinched)
3 – Hughes
4 – McEachern
5 – West Forsyth (must win final two games)
6 – Lassiter
7 – Norcross (clinched)
8 – Parkview ( must win final two games)

This will be a very exciting game between the two. I have a great deal of respect fr both teams. This will be a “BRUISE BOWL” ! The way Camden County is Man Handling Region 1-AAAAAA opponents, I believe that they will win this game. I wish the two the very best this coming Friday.

Last week ESPNU moved Walton-Milton to 9PM start. Will Camden-Lowndes have same 9PM start? Would like to catch second half after seeing Lassiter clinch at home on senior night.

Yeah Region 1-AAAAAA Camden has really struggled this year in your big bad region. The biggest advantage Lowndes has this week is that Moe, Larry, and Curley, residents of Valdosta, will call the game. lol

I will be at Lowndes stadium rooting for our cats. I anticipate a hard fought and hopefully well reffed game. I do not want anything to taint this one. On paper I would say that Camden should walk out with a comfortable win given the performances of the teams thus far this year. But that is why the game is played on the field and not on paper. I would say that Camden has proven that they can play in R1 6A and given the fact that the 3rd and 4th stringers have played a lot so far this year they should be fine next year as well. That said, the next two weeks are going to be the hardest and to come out of the hard fought match against Lowndes at Lowndes and then travel to Colquitt the next Friday will really test the mettle of our boys from Kingsland. Hopefully Tiquan and Bergmann plays this one because again I would not want any excuses, but if JJ and Kalvarez were in the same condition I think I would rather Herron sit them instead of risking an injury that would go through several playoff games rather than play them in the last game of the year when the playoffs and at least a #2 seed was sewn up. We shall see what we see. Again, see you all there, and yes I already have my ticket. I figure this one will sell out. Nachos and good football. What could be better?

WildcatManiac ………..tiquan and burgman are not playing this one…….camden will be going up against a wounded lowndes team with our 2 best athletes watching this one from the sideline….which would just make a win for us that much sweeter.

grayson will wind up being the region 8 champs…….which will put them in the same bracket as region 1 team 2…….parkview would have to beat south gwinnett at south gwinnett to keep grayson from winning the region………i dont see that happening……..another lowndes and grayson showdown is highly likely.

if parkview loses to south gwinnett that would mean lowndes would have to beat lovejoy and grayson on its way to dome…..that will be a big task.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. We’ve been hearing little else from you-know-who.

Of far greater interest, if Camden is the #1 seed, and Grayson becomes the #2 seed, I believe they meet in the quarters if both get that far, at Camden.

Lowndes would travel to Lovejoy in the 2nd round. Hope the excuses wouldn’t be necessary by then.

Grayson at Archer tonight. Archer is an enigma to me. Lost to Parkview & Brookwood by 2 and 1. Could of and should of won both. Then get nailed by SG by 4 TDs.

McEachern vs #4 seed from Region 1-AAAAAA Coffee, Colquitt, Valdosta? Might that be the best game of the first round? #3 seed from 1-AAAAAA in my opinion has the easier draw, probably Marietta, then Langston-Hughes(?). The #1 1-AAAAAA seed will play a North or South Cobb team, it appears, and of course, the North Cobb team was rated as high as #5 until they lost.

Region 2-AAAAAA? The best team of the six teams that aren’t Lovejoy are 3-5? Region 3-AAAAAA doesn’t seem any better.

Grayson traveling to Norcross in the 2nd round is an equivalent bloodletting back when Lowndes would collide in the 2nd round with Camden (where’s The Cross, does he know?) Winner does play Camden. Parkview slated to meet North Gwinnett as it stands now. I’d take NG.

Camden is not to tough. It took poor officiating for them to beat coffee.

The final week in region 8 will be interesting for the playoff brackets. If Parkview wins the region, it makes the left hand side of the bracket wide open. I don’t think any team is a clear favorite but I think Lassiter would hold the edge. Lassiter made a good run last year as a 4 seed from their region and I believe that experience helps them. The runner up in region 1 may have to make back to back trips to N. Atlanta area for the quarters and semi finals and that is a tough thing to do. If Grayson wins the region, they become the clear favorite from that side of the bracket to get to the championship.

@the truth, if Parkview wins the next two, putting Grayson no better than #2, then the upper right bracket is loaded with Camden, Grayson & Norcross. Wild card here is South Gwinnett, however. They may win their next two putting them as the #2 seed.

I have said it before. I was there. Coffee spotted Camden 30 points and even though Coffee outscored Camden from around the 6 minute of the second quarter to the final gun. Coffee did not have a prayer of coming back to win the game.

Coffee spotted Lowndes the same amount and came within 2 points of coming back to beat them in the final 6 minutes.

Camdens defense is sooo disciplined, really fast and well coached. Lowndes is just fast. Lowndes also had their two walk-on-water, (according to bk), players during the Coffee game.

Any team that beats Camden this year will have to play four back-to-back quarters of mistake free football.

@Truthseeker….Are you serious. How did bad officiating cause Coffee to lose 39 to 12. I was at the game and I have been very complimentary of Coffee and their team. But now I am tired of the comments from people saying that Coffee ran over Camden. Yes during the game Coffee moved the ball somewhat but at no time were you guys any threat to score points. Moving the ball between the twenty yard lines is not manhandling anything. So the niceness is over. Coffee was not very good in the game against Camden. Camden ran at will and scored at will. The score could have been 70 to 12 if the coaches at Camden wanted it to be that high. The only reason it wasn’t that much is the Camden coaches did not want to embarrass their region teammates. Now stop trying to convince yourself that you are in the same league as Camden. You’re good but still in the second tier of Region 1. Next year maybe but not this year.

Man it gets nasty on here! LOL. It happens on the field boys, not in the BLOGS. Good luck to Lowndes, they are a great, well coached team. No matter what, it should be a great game. Whoever plays mistake free ball wins (in my opinion.)

hereswhatittakes………..coffee did outplay camden in the 2nd half……..say what you want to……adjustments were made…….coffee lost 39-12 but had more yards on offense as well……ran and passed all over camden just as valdosta did……but for whatever reason…both teams could not put the ball in the endzone on camden……moving the ball against them has not been a big problem..scoring has and that is what matters

i dont want you camdenytes to get me confused……….i still feel our boys have a shot..without lang and burgman……but our shot just took a hard blow. i would pick us to win this game with these 2……but without i cant. I havent seen us play enough without these 2 to know. Yea we scored 35 on tifton after burgman went out of game……but tifton is not that good.

Brookwood can lose the next two and still make the playoffs. Last year they played Grayson during the last regular season game and lost 14-7 on one stupid play. In eight days, they go to Grayson and play well, they should be more than ready to give their first round opponent a good game.

bksmith14 is correct , something should be done concerning Lowndes 2 best players being out this week…..My suggestion would be , Camden should spot Lowndes 14 points and Instead of 10 yards in 4 downs , 10 yards in 3 downs for the Camden offense, that should even things out….Lord knows that there has never been a team at any level go into a big game with 2 starters out .

Lang and burgman would have a huge impact on this game if they were able to play.

Grayson 48 Archer 0. I don’t understand what is going on with Archer. They did so well in the beginning of the season. I found out last week that many of their starters are sophomores. They have just seemed to be outmatched and tire out.

fred…archer has no depth…..and no defense…and yall were way to fast for them.

The biggest diff i have noticed along with several others abouth this years grayson team is that yalls defense is obviously as good as last years…but the qb is nowhere near as good as last years. Sure he can put up good stats against weak defenses…..but whats he going to do when he goes up against some good defenses in playoffs……parkviews defense is not to bad and he did not look good in that game. Time will tell………Defense wins championships…..and yall def have that ……..prob the best d in state still……but yalls qb scares me…and the grayson offensive line doesnt seem to be as dominant as last years……….i know…i know……yall have blown out everyone here lately but none of the teams yall have blown out are on par with camden…lowndes…norcross….colquitt…north gwinnett….etc..

i just dont feel grayson is as good on offense as last year…..and i feel its going to show against a really good defense

like the ol saying goes…..grayson is the reigning champs…and will be until someone knocks them off….and it will not be easy…the defense is so good….it dont matter how the offense plays….grayson will be in every game

@ Gwinnett Dad

The only way that South could get the 2 seed is for Grayson to lose to Brookwood which will not happen and they go 1 and 1 in their final 2. That would give each team 2 loses in the region but Grayson has a game in hand with their win against South. They are playing with the same attitude they played with last year and imo the Parkview game woke them up. Grayson’s key will be their offense and if they continue to execute the way they have since the Parkview game I like them to repeat.

bk..I hate to break it to you but Lowndes schedule has not been that great. To Lowndes credit, they have won the close regions games, but blowout wins over 2-7 Luella, 3-5 Newton, 1-5 Windsor Forest from 5A, and 2-6 Hardaway also in 5A is not that great. Outside of region, Grayson has beaten McEachern who is 6-2 and winning their region, and Central of Miami who is 6-2. Central is ranked 6 in FL and their only other loss was by 10 points to Manatee in FL, ranked 8 in the nation and 1 in FL. The loss to Parkview was actually a good thing for Grayson. They are playing well and that will carry into the playoffs.

Grayson looking much like the AAAAAA champion , smothering defense , Archer yes , but still the Rams put on a defensive show tonight. I especially liked the pick 6…….The Parkview South Gwinnette game weighs heavy (seeding)……Camden and Grayson Dome bound if Parkview loses , It would be a shame if both were on the same side of the brackets.
