Colquitt County and Coffee play on Friday in Moultrie in a game that might decide which team makes the playoffs out of Region 1-AAAAAA. According to the computer Maxwell Ratings, Colquitt is the eighth-best team and Coffee is the 13th best in AAAAAA. But they also have the toughest two schedules in the state, and the loser will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs. Here are the Maxwell Ratings’ rankings of each team’s strength of schedule for AAAAAA and AAAAA. We’ll have the other classifications later in the week. The rating is an indication of strength for the average opponent. For example, Colquitt’s average opponent is about 13 points better than Lassiter’s average opponent, according to Maxwell.

@eaglenationrising – I do agree with you on the super region thing. Local rivalries are the best. I fully understand the issues with geography the southern part of the state faces. Believe it or not (and I think you will as you live in Atlanta) some of the Atlanta area regions face some nasty travel times not due to mileage but due to traffic.

@ENR…….At the end of the day, High School Football is still a game played by kids. IMO the lessons learned are more important than the wins and the losses. I am a NS grad and my daughter graduated from HOCO . My son will finish at WR.( rezoned twice ) The Dixie Demons have finally gelled as a team . Our Eagles peaked three games ago and are losing some of their power. As painful as this is, I am predicting a Dixie Demon win. They are morphing into the little train that could and it may prove hard to derail them.

@ Fred: I do have a finance degree and an economics MBA. I love numbers. Those numbers are about wins and losses. Those are not subjective. When Northside (Warner Robins) lost to Tucker in the semifinals, someone could have written a book as to how Northisde controlled the game and lost on a goal line fumble which led to a 103 yard fumble return.
However, the tangible number was that Tucker had more points and won the game in route to their second State Championship. I like real numbers…not subjective speculation. I do not like speculation in the financial markets. I, especially, hate subjective numbers for high school CHILDREN.
Believe what you may. The overwhelming majority of the AJC staff sees games in the metro Atlanta area. To accurate speculate in a “Sports Book” scenario, you have to see the teams that you are speculating. Do you really believe that the AJC sees 15% of the teams that play football in this HUGE state???? Do you know how big a staff would have to be to cover the entire Peach State? There are twice as many high school football teams in Georgia than all of college football (FCS, FBS, D2). It is completely subjective based on (in many cases) no data.
Look Fred, if you believe that one of America’s largest news publications inputting spreads for children sports is not a big deal, you are entitled to that opinion. In a state that is so sensitive that adults can not legally gamble, I find it laughable that the AJC would publish and print this chaos. What do you think a spread means to the kids that will play their hearts out in the big MLK vs. Tucker game? It means nothing. What will a SOS from Maxwell mean when the state playoffs start. I have played in a state playoff game. I have played against nationally ranked football and basketball teams. It means nothing to a kid. ABSOLUTELY nothing.

@ Double Standard: Time will tell. Bryan Way is good for an extra 10 points for Northside. That is a fact. Do you remember how the game opened last year. That guy should join the circus!
Keep up hope that Northside has peeked. FYI: Kinsler has NEVER lost a regular season football game as head coach. NEVER. Good luck with that coming to an end.

@eaglenationrising – Traffic is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?
I think our difference is that this is not a sports book as my exceeding little knowledge of gambling makes me think of it. ALL this is and ALL it is purported to be is a computer analysis based solely on the scores of the games. A sports book on the other hand, I *think* has real people behind it trying to take into account all of the readily available (and some not so readily available!) knowledge about the teams involved. A sports book would consider rivalries, injuries to players, effects of weather on a certain team’s normal game plans, etc.
Again, I’m not a gambler and really don’t understand all the stuff about taking points and covering the line and everything else that happens. Heck, I don’t even participate in the March Madness pools! I can most definitely agree that putting high schools kids into situations where they are the focus of gambling is a very bad thing. I just don’t see this as doing that. I really think you are possibly reading too much into this.

ENR…..I don’t always agree with your post, but I love the way your post gets everyone’s blood pressure up, It’s great!
By the way, there are those who still feel Camden has a weak schedule. They even go as far as saying that if it were not for Camden’s weak past schedules, they would not have won any State Titles………And you ALL know who you are!

Wow . . . fascinating blog today
I would guess a full third of the postings are by readers who seem to be upset this type of analysis is performed and published, but there seems to be no room in their minds for the other readers who enjoy and appreciate it. Fred is just one example (thanks Fred!) who is indirectly under attack because he enjoys a different perspective than just what the standings can provide.
Maybe in light of my vested interest my question can be easily dismissed, but why shouldn’t those who want to look at the ratings be able to? Conversely, if you are a reader who finds the ratings, SOS, predicted margins, etc., upsetting, why not simply ignore them?
Also, there seems to be a belief that presenting a strength of schedule ratings is implying teams in weak regions are not competitive. I’ve not read where anyone has put forth that idea. Some regions are both weak overall and have great teams. There’s no contradiction and no insult to say a region with weak teams is a weak region. Boise State and Texas Christian recently fielded strong teams while playing in a weak conference for several years at the college level and, as has been pointed out, Camden County did it as well.
Finally, and this should go without saying, the predicted margins (not spreads) are in no way provided or even intended to support gambling. With the exception that they are grounded in an objective analysis of scores and schedules, they are absolutely no different than any number of predicted scores or margins posted by the AJC writers or the many readers who throw out similar predictions in the blogs.

All the little hate towards Colquitt is good. But we will be just fine and we are still just as dangerous as ever. The problem is that we are more dangerous to ourselves than any team is.Like i said once we learn to get out of our own way then look out,but trust me we fear no one. Right now up next is Coffee Co.We are a threat no matter what seed we are.Home field advantage is only good for the first round cause by the second round really good teams are left and good teams can win anywhere with good coaching. I know what people are going to say,(first u have to make the playoffs) but to me that won’t be a problem. Lets Go Pack!!!

@Todd H. Given that East Paulding has better all around stats than Allatoona why do you think this list has E.P. with the tougher schedule? Shouldn’t that be the other way around or am I missing something that makes the difference? As you would say Allatoona has to play the Raiders and the Raiders don’t.

@RAIDER FAN: “why do you think this list has E.P. with the tougher schedule?”
Chip Saye had the exact same question when I sent in the ratings this week.
Although they play the exact same teams, the difference is the location of the games. Both play five home games and five away games, but each opponent has an individual home advantage, so that accounts for the difference.
The difference in their schedule strength is only 1/10th of a point, so with the home advantages being updated each week it’s entirely possible for the schedule strengths to swap rankings.

I would say that thus far Camden is feeling pretty good about being in region 1. And @ vikingtilleye; I would like to point out that our running game is all that and more. Of course when you average pretty close to 300 yards a game rushing then maybe you would call that mediocre. I do like to look at similar opponents and three stand out like a sore thumb. #1 Camden 43 – Valdosta 6 in Valdosta (especially liked the way our defense let them run up and down the field, oh wait, they crossed the 50 like three times). On the flip side Lowndes 17 – Valdosta 14 (and lowness pulled that one out by the seat of their pants). #2 Camden 39 – Coffee 12 while on the other hand Lowndes 31 – Coffee 29 and again with a prayer at the end. They both beat the tar out of Brunswick but if I am not mistaken Brunswick had about 350 yards rushing and over a hundred passing and rang up right around 500 yards total on Lowndes while last Friday, Camden held them to right around 150 yards total. So I guess the Camden defense just bows down to Lowndes. That was sarcasm by the way. I am not going to guarantee a win against Lowndes but I will say that if I was in charge of laying down odds I would not bet against Camden. Should be a good one and I am looking forward to trying to stay warm and watching every minute of it.
As far as the strength of schedule argument. I would like to reiterate that with 32 teams to include 4 from each region you should be getting a fair share of the better teams. Are some teams left out that could probably compete? Well absolutely but to try to do it any different would create a lot more arguments. For the most part I believe that the regions are well represented. And to the phooey about Camden’s weak schedule; I guess three titles and perennial play deep into the postures every year against the best of the rest in the state should speak for itself. They deserved to be there.

@WildcatManiac see that’s where people always get it incorrect. To compare offenses is of no use because we’re not pitting Lowndes offense against Camden’s offense or pitting Lowndes defense against Camden’s defense. The question is will Camden’s defense be able to stop Lowndes offense and will Camden’s offense be able to move the ball against Lowndes defense. You can’t even compare Brunswick’s offense to Camden’s because they run different styles. The Lowndes defense is much more familiar with what Camden runs and will be able to stop their offense. Camden won’t be able to move the ball and Lowndes will run up and down the field on Camden because they’re stronger and faster

And it’s crazy to compare common opponents. Valdosta dominated Colquitt and Lowndes almost lost to Colquitt but Lowndes beat Valdosta. That doesn’t make sense in theory but it happened. I don’t know why people do that.

ENR & Jefferson (along with every Northside Eagle fan across the globe) would like to announce our unyielding support for Warner Robins head football coach Bryan Way! We officially endorse a lifetime contract for the Demon head football coach who is like a gift that just keeps on giving.
While Georgia High School Hall of Fame and former Warner Robins head coach Robert Davis went 21-7 as the head coach at Warner Robins against Northside (Warner Robins) while winning 2 National Championships and 3 State Championships. The great Bryan Way has hoisted one State Championship in 2004 for the Demons has amassed a record of 2-6 in the Big Game (City Championship).
H-mmmm let’s see if I’ve got this correct. “the great Brian Way has only one state championship.” How many does Northside Warner Robins have in their entire history? TWO!!!!!!
Just saying!

@Wildcat Maniac — You have incorrect stats. First of all, it has been several weeks since Lowndes hosted Brunswick. Secondly, Lowndes gave up 150 yards rushing and only 55 yards passing (Brunswick completed 6 of 17 passing attempts)
Lowndes on the other hand had 480 yards of offense against Brunswick.
To compare games and opponents one must also consider at what point in the games did the winning team put in their B Teamers and 9th graders. Then you also have to compare those to whatever team you are comparing them to. It goes on and on. See how silly your argument is now?

I will post again Friday night regardless of the outcome. I will also say that your argument about not comparing common opponents is ludicrous. If you consider that you dominate a team because you won 17-14 then you are drinking the kool-aid. Making the statement that Lowndes is bigger and stronger is also pretty weak and not correct. Camden has 72 seniors and juniors that have been in the wing-T system since they were 6. If you think that our boys cannot play against that offense then again I will say that you need to put the cup down. I expect a good game that should have some breakout plays that decide it along the way. Hopefully those are on the Camden side buy I would not be surprised to see a few on the Lowndes side as well. You all seem to have a knack for pulling rabbits out of a hat.
As far as stats. Lowndes stats as follows per game: pass – 63.4yds, rush – 270.3yds, 37points scored with 9.5points allowed. Looking at the Camden stats and taking into account that they have played similar opponents I still do not see how you are making your prediction that Lowndes will win by 3 touchdowns. If they do then my hats off to you but I am firmly of the opinion that it will either be close or it will be Camden winning by two or more touchdowns. I say that because it seems to me that we are just as fast and just as strong and the Camden players want the region and the perfect season just as bad. IMHO, Lowndes needs to hope for a close game.
Camden as follows per game: pass – 118.8yds, rush – 301.5yds, 46.1points

WildcatManiac

And in every Camden win the fourth quarter and in most cases at least half of the third quarter has been played by our third and fourth string offenses and defenses. That of course is every game thus far. So if you want to say that that is a reason that the Lowndes stats are lower than they should be I would come back with the FACT that the Camden starters have been on the field much less time than the Lowndes starters have been on the field.

I don’t understand the SOS rankings. How does one determine that a team being faced in one region is stronger or as strong as one being played in another region when they have absolutely no common opponents or have not played each other? Colquitt County’s SOS for instance is based on a schedule comprised of NG, Lowndes, Camden etc but Dacula is very close behind with opponents like Grayson SG and Collins Hill. But why is Dacula ranked 3? Why not 30? Brunswick plays the same opponents that Colquitt does with a few exceptions. And these exceptions are teams that may be tougher than the ones Dacula faces. But who knows? They haven’t played each other. Is this based on rankings which are also very flawed or historical data (e.g. number of wins per season, number of times in the playoffs)

@WildcatManiac Why is not comparing common opponents crazy? I just provided an example in which it doesn’t make any sense. The so called logic of comparing common opponents is flawed especially in Region 1. Valdosta DID dominate Colquitt and lost to us on a last minute field goal. Stats will back that up

I truly enjoy the maxwell ratings and sos information. It makes you think on many different levels as it relates to teams in different classes, different areas of the state. To rate NSWR high in the rankings when we had not played anyone of signifigance was backwards thinking when in fact overall strength of schedule and historical put us there. Anyway keep up the good work, I am not naive enough to believe there is no gambling in hs football but it is not fueled by these rating systems.

@ Your Highness74 == November is here and it is time to get down to business. There are many good teams in 6A and the playoffs are going to be fun. Now comes the time to see if Lovejoy can truely compete with the so-called “Big Boys”. Now we will find out if Grayson is still king of the hill. Will Camden return the title to South Georgia ? Does region 4 shock region 1 ?Will Cobb get it’s first state champion ? Who survives the Gwinnett wars ? Many more questions to be answered and the test starts real soon. Time to cram and brush up on possible opponents. In reference to your comment on who we lost to and why. We lost to Colquit County. We were beaten by the officials and ourselves. The complaint department is closed. Case closed. Serious times ahead. Good luck to the wildcats friday. Hope to see you soon.

Please Lord even if Camden doesn’t win it all let the title return to the south so order can be restored and these North GA teams will stop thinking they can compete. Amen

it make’s sense to me that the better the team the easier the schedule…lol I think Lovejoy has a fine team this year. As usual they must prove themselves. im sure if they won state this year there would be a reasonable explanation like… “they had an easy playoff bracket” or “they didnt play in an SEC caliber region so they were injury free”. hehe. Anywho, i guess we’ll all find out in das playoff . Best of Luck!

@ Pjboy24 == I’m sure the kids would appreciate your view. Do you remember the start of the Gulf War ? ” Shock and Awe ” is what they called it. Watch for this to happen, starting friday and continuing until round 4. Surprises await for many. 6A is wide open. My favorite, of course is Lovejoy but like I keep saying, it’s wide open.

A few of things…local ranking determines seeding only, the final outcome on 15 Dec says it all…one must expect injuries during the year and hope someone step up…love the passion here for football but understand anything can happen on Friday or Saturday…like when Lowndes was called PLOWBOYS…. last but not least, someone needs to posted the cooking instructions for crow

@ Your Highness74 == For many teams, the next 2 weeks are going to clear up a few things. Travel ? Where ? Winning is paramount this and next week. Winning can answer those previous questions. It will be interesting to see how teams match up. Region 1, with their grind it out type of football against region 4 and it’s mix of running and throwing teams. Region 2 may go 3-1 against Region 3, with Lovejoy(R1) and Hughes(R2) being on top. I think Region 8 will do well vs. Region 5. Different style of football. Lassiter will need to be tough. They will be facing a pretty good 4 seed. Region 6 vs. 7 is going to be good football. Can’t call that. Pretenders will go early. In 2 weeks, it will be nice to be both lucky and good. The show is about to start.
