Maxwell Ratings: 9-0 vs. toughest AAA schedule = No. 1 ranking for Thomson

Thomson is the new No. 1-ranked team in Class AAA after the Bulldogs’ 28-14 victory over Washington County in a game between unbeaten teams, according to this week’s Maxwell Ratings. Thomson jumped Peach County and Buford. Thomson has played the toughest schedule in Class AAA, per Maxwell.

Each week, AJC.com will publish the Maxwell Ratings to give fans a computerized look at how Georgia’s 412 football-playing teams rank in each class and in all classifications.

Below are the rankings through games of Oct. 20.

The Maxwell Ratings are based strictly on scores. As the season progresses, the rankings will rely more and more on this season’s results and less on previous seasons. By the playoffs, the rankings will reflect 2012 results entirely.

How bad does your program have to be to earn a negative rating from Maxwell? Does that mean your team is losing games it has not even played?!:)

@ War Eagle

Well if its Cross Keys, they have. Saw their first game this year, knew they didnt have a chance of even coming close to winning a game.

@sportsnut: “Loren, Clarify for me again, what scores ? This seasons ? This and last seasons ? Historical ? and if so, how long back ?”

Good question, sportsnut. First, a slight disclaimer – some of the descriptions featuring the ratings and such are written by Todd. Todd has a great general working knowledge of the ratings, but sometimes the description is slightly different than the actual mechanics of the system (sorry, Todd!).

Anyway, the current season’s ratings are compiled from the results from current season and the *ratings* (not actually the scores) for past seasons. Technically, every single past season I have ever rated is used (back to 1948), but more recent seasons are weighed much more heavily. For example, the last five years account for about 97% of the past seasons’ impact.

As the season progresses, the impact from the past ratings become less significant as the current season’s games begin to weigh more.

The exact mix between past ratings and current results depends on where a team is at in the season. One game into the season, the mix is about 50-50. Four games into the season, about 20 percent of the rating is due to past ratings and 80 percent due to the four results of the current season. Eight games into the season, the mix is about 5 percent to 95 percent while 10 games into the season the mix is only about 0.5 percent past ratings and 99.5% current season’s results.

By the end of season, the past ratings usually account for less than 0.01 of a point difference in the rating.

@WarEagle: “How bad does your program have to be to earn a negative rating from Maxwell?”

The ratings are scaled so that only the very best teams will top a rating of 100. Of the over 19,000 GHSA teams that have fielded a team since 1948, only 54 have achieved a rating of over 100, the last time being a rare trio of teams rated over 100 in the same season in 2006 with Northside (Warner Robins), Dublin, and Charlton County.

Since the ratings represent the relative of teams to each other, there is no provision to keep any team from falling below 0 for a negative rating.

Norcross better hopes that Parkview loses another game so they don’t play Grayson in the second round of the playoffs, because Norcross don’t want none of Grayson.

Raider-first of all your grammar is atrocious! Secondly, you have to beat the best to be considered the best, so not only our we rooting for Parkview, we are also rooting for Camden so we can beat Grayson and Camden back to back in rounds 2 and 3!

Please have someone else type your post next time!

Nutball-that was a spoof…I am glad you got it.

Raider-My bet is that you have never seen Norcross play. If you had, you would know that there is not a defense in this nation that could hold us to 10 points. Not even the Rams. OUR offense is explosive.

Congrats on the GED…I’ll drop off a card at McDonald’s for you.

Raider-be serious…we are 9-0 and 5 of our wins are vs. top 20 above. Our team speed on offense will give Grayson problems. If they try to load the box we can beat them with the pass. We are multi-dimensional with great balance. I look forward to playing them and then Camden.

@ The Cross == I hope you beat Grayson but I don’t think you will. I know you will be the underdog and I always pull for that. If what everyone says is true, Grayson should stop your running game. If not, you guys can pull it off. Kamara and or Autrey will need to do their thing but does your line have what it takes to make Graysons D look beatable. That is the question, Can you score enough to win ?

Nutball-although we really have a good run game, our passing game is just as good and I believe the key to beating Grayson or Camden. Our line is very big and athletic, our QB is extremely accurate with good wheels and we have 3 super WR and TE that are underrated.

I guess we will see in a few weeks, but if anyone thinks that the secret to beating Norcross is to shut down the run game then they will be sadly mistaken.

That’s because Loren dumbs it down for me. He saves the PhD explanation for you guys. :)

Grayson looked pretty good last night,@ The Cross if i where you i would be hoping that Parkview loses to SG,if not it is going to be a short playoff run for Norcross. After last night i am going to change my score to Grayson 38 – Norcross 7,they will score a late touchdown on Grayson B team.
