M.L. King, Tucker emerge in 6-AAAAA; Warner Robins, Northside tune up for showdown

Here are five of the big stories from Week 10 in Class AAAAA:

*Region 6-AAAAA title picture a little clearer: M.L. King (8-0, 7-0) and Tucker (7-1, 6-1) moved to the top of the crowded field in the 6-AAAAA championship chase with victories on Friday against Stephenson and Miller Grove, respectively, and set up a huge matchup for next weekend when the Lions and Tigers meet at Hallford Stadium. A victory would give M.L. King the region title. Tucker will win the region if it beats M.L. King and then Mays the following weekend. Both should reach the playoffs. Miller Grove, Stephenson, Mays and Southwest DeKalb all have two or three region losses and will fight for the other two playoff spots.

*It’s rivalry week in Warner Robins: Northside and Warner Robins improved to 5-0 in 2-AAAAA on Friday to set up next week’s showdown that will determine the Region 2-AAAAA champion. Northside recorded its second consecutive shutout and fourth overall in beating Greenbrier 35-0. Warner Robins scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Grovetown 35-14. Warner Robins leads the city rivalry 33-21, but Northside has won nine of the past 11.

*First victory for Cambridge: The first-year school in Milton collected the first victory in the program’s brief history when the Bears beat North Springs 45-13. Cambridge had been outscored by an average of 44-9 during its 1-7 start. It was the 31st consecutive loss for North Springs, which hasn’t won a game since a 39-6 loss to Stone Mountain on Oct. 16, 2009 was overturned by forfeit.

*First victory for Winder-Barrow in a very long time: The Bulldoggs snapped what had been the longest active losing streak of any Class AAAAA team – 31 games – when they beat Cedar Shoals 31-21. Winder-Barrow had not won since beating Monroe Area 48-41 on Oct. 9, 2009. “It’s been a long time coming,” Winder-Barrow’s Soloman Sims told the Barrow Journal. “Needless to say, a victory feels really good.”

*Subregion title still up in the air: Union Grove took sole possession of first place in 4-AAAAA Division A with a 35-13 victory over Mundy’s Mill, but the Wolverines need to beat Drew next week to secure the subregion title. Drew will win the title if it beats Union Grove and Mundy’s Mill loses to Ola. Victories by Drew and Mundy’s Mill would create a three-way tie for first place.

THE "CANNON RULES"!!

Walking out of SOUTH PAULDING’s stadium last night I was just GLAD to be doing it with another “W” on the scoreboard!!! EAST 20 / SOUTH PAULDING 16!!! RAIDERS still UNDEFEATED!!!

But this one was NOT easy…I struggle to complain on here about bad / questionable officials calling these games BUT thru the years we had had our share of…let’s just say “situations”. It seems the majority of the officials doing our games come from The Etowah Valley Football Assn. out of Cartersville Ga. Last night was one of those nights where from the start it appeared the officials were not sure how they wanted to make calls. By that I mean they would throw a flag (many times well after the play was over) then have a LONG conference between themselves before breaking up and making the call. They WOULD not blow many running plays dead consistently as the kids were pushing back and forth in bunches or in piles but then when other players jumped in to try and “finish” the play they would throw a flag for “piling on”!! It’s either a DEAD play or let them keep playing…you can’t have it both ways.

After this was called SEVERAL times it caused players to be afraid to finish a play or to assist when they though the play was over not wanting to be flagged for a late hit. This type officiating gave SOUTH PAULDING a late TD when it appeared the play was over and EAST players let up as the SOUTH PAULDING player was in a pile but since no one else piled on him he got up and ran in for a late TD…EAST blocked the extra point attempt but it made the game closer than it needed to be at that point.

This game was a defensive struggle from the start as SOUTH PAULDING has a pretty good “D” at stopping the run and EAST was determined to feed them a dose of Kamani Thomas ALL NIGHT! EAST didn’t try but a handful of passes all night and didn’t score any special team points, which is very odd.

Well a win is a win…and the RAIDERS are still UNDEFEATED at 8 / 0 with LITHIA SPRINGS next week then the NOV. 9th game in “THE BONEYARD” with ALLATOONA to decide the REGION CHAMPIONSHIP for 5 AAAAA!

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Next week is HUGE!! Tucker gonna show that the loss to Stephenson was nothing but a admiration. That game 2 of our top 3 rushers were suspended from school that same week. Our star back was kicked off the team but we just needed a little time to get the backup runners ready for game action. Now we good and got MLK next week. Should be fun to watch. Get ur popcorn ready!!

Apparently, EAST and Allatoona were both looking past their opponents last night. The RAIDERS did their version of sleep walking…pulling out a 20-16 victory which really wasn’t that close. That was some of the worst officiating I have ever seen! I am at a loss to explain the lack of fire from the RAIDERS. Also not sure what message coach Goddard was trying to send by the 99% run game plan. If EAST is going to win the region and make a deep run in the playoffs, the passing attack will have to improve!

Thankfully for REGION 5, Allatoona was lucky to pull out an OT victory 20-17 over Hiram thanks to stuffing a fake field goal attempt at 6″ line.

Despite the sub-par performance by both teams last night, November 9th in “The Boneyard” should be fun!!!!

Go RAIDERS!!!!

We are the team to beat, I saw Tucker against Stephenson and Stephenson is very very bad. They may not make the playoffs, and they shouldn’t we don’t want an early exit from out region reps. But Tucker you have a Lion in your yard, and we bite. I think you will get the same thing the lil s guys got. But maybe a little closer, you have better coaches. 35-21, Region Champs MLK……. 70-7? Stephenson was leading MLK 14-7 (should’ve been 21-7) in the FIRST half. But when your coach starts making bad calls you start to lose momentum and the other team starts gaining it, Which is a HUGE game changer. I don’t think this game reflects Stephenson ability because they did beat Tucker. So if Tucker loses the region standing will be

1.MLK
2.Stephenson
3.Tucker

If they win it’s

1.Tucker
2.MLK
3.Stephenson

And Tucker what since would it make for you to talk crap about Stephenson when they BEAT you already????? It dosen’t matter WHO you had missing, Stephenson had starters missing at the Tucker game also. AND Stephenson has a young team (alot of sophmores) and they still won. What does that tell you?

You guys are not going to beat MLK, and you will end up BEHIND Stephenson in the region at #3

Dboy…even though you have two state titles, you would not have had them in 5A!!! You didn’t have to play the same caliber teams that Stephenson and MLK had to play to get that title. They were always 4A schools who just had the talent to play up!!! You do have to give them that much! I’m just saying!!!

Dboy Scott

Dekalb all the way, that is ur theory. I say we could have won in in any division. It’s not like it’s that much difference between 5A and 6A. That’s student body #’s in the school doesn’t mean the teams up there are so much better. Bad analogy. Oh guess that’s why Stephenson and MLK stayed down cause they think it’s gravy to win state in the so call lower division. Well to those to schools who stayed down but should have played up win 1 then if it’s so much easier!! I will even argue that our division last year was better that MLK and Stephenson division in 5A last year.

@Dboy. . . . . .I do agree with you about the classifications. I believe that this 5A class has a lot more competition in it. However, there are teams that are in 6A that is on another level. I followed MLK last year and the quality of teams that they played last year made for an all around tough schedule. South Gwinnett, Collins Hill (A), East Coweta(A), Newnan(A), Valdosta(A), Stehphenson, Newton(A), Langston Hughes, Westlake. They were undefeated last year. They lost in the semi’s to a quality Lasseter team. I don’t want to take anything away from 5A but there are some power teams in 6A.

Dboy Scott

I agree uncle junior! What MLK king did last year was pretty good in the playoffs but how hard was their region in 5A last year not the state playoffs. Tucker region last was harder in my opinion. Now that they are in the same region it’s even harder but Tucker still stands their ground! We will see come Friday tho. We not any strangers to MLK ask them about those beatings they took when we played them in the glorified scrimmage. 21-0 at halftime before lighting struck and the game was called. That spread won’t work against us. Our players to good and our coaches are to good for that

@ dboy scott- no offense at all when I say this but what quality teams did you guys play last yr that makes you think yall schedule last yr was alot harder than MLK..and no disrespect when I say this but I was at the stephenson and tucker game..Yall didnt score til the forth qtr.. Now keep in mind they defense on yall and realize we beat them 49-28.. so when I estimate those odds I honestly do feel confident that Tucker is goin to get a hurtful rude awakenin when they play us.. But aye man im not a trash talker neither is most of the mlk fans, we dont have to make songs and music videos to prove our point..We just show up on the field and do what we do best amd thats demolish and heartbreak feelings..Cmon man you already know its gonna be a hard game to beat us..YOU ALREADI KNOW!! Mighty

As I stated on another blog, MLK has no balanced offense. The QB doesn’t read defenses, it’s predetermined who he is gonna throw to. He chucks the ball down down field and the WRs adjust and makes plays on the ball. Nothing wrong with that, but we have the DBs to match up. MLK doesn’t block good on passing downs. and it will be a lot of pressure on the QB accompanied by tight coverage. I look for no less than 3 int’s and 6 sack.

Your defense plays well, but they do over peruse and with our misdirection plays we will get some big gains. By the second half you D will be worn down and tired of tackling #25.

And you can’t compare how another team played against someone else. That’s meaningless, different teams cause different match ups. Miller Grove passed all over Stephenson but not against Tucker.

@Tiger4Life…

Without getting ahead of ourselves as everyone has a LOT of football to play before we get to this point…according to the playoff bracket, the # 2 Team in REGION 6 in Round 2 plays the # 1 Team from Region 5 (if both teams were to win the first round game)…if current standings hold that would put TUCKER playing EAST in “THE BONEYARD!!!

That would be an interesting match-up…just something to think on…there’s a lot of football between now and Round 2.

I said it once I’ll say it twice if your play calling is timid more than likely you going to loose. There was never any adjustments that Stephenson made throughtout the game. One thing I did like was the I-formation that gave MLK trouble but didn’t go back into the I until 4th quarter again when they scored. Now on onto the defense. Very young in the secondary with a freshman stating. Ummm. Thats speaks volumes. Well anyway, Stephenson will do well in state playoffs. I expect Stephenson to make it out of the first & second round this year..I said this before I have seen the number 3 & 4 seeds make it all the way to the State Finals, so nothing is impossible. The bottom line is to get there and let the chips fall where they may.

@ Gamer = Lovejoy. We play our players. Some, like in south Georgia, they put stock in the JV. At Lovejoy, if you suit up and play on friday night, you play varsity. That is how you build experience. Let the young ones play early and by the time they are juniors and seniors, they are ready. Our seniors played as freshmen and gained valuable experience. Unlike schools such as Grayson, who I think caught lightning in a bottle last year, do not play anyone but juniors and seniors. This is a coaching thing. Some coach’s have it and some don’t. It has served Lovejoy well playing the under classmen. We have 33 seniors, 18 juniors, 27 sophomores and 13 freshmen. Winning the way we do, we are allowed opportunities to play the kids and it is a plus. If you are a talent, it is seen early and are already at the level where he can learn the system in live situations. Nothing like game speed for teaching.

@Jab 65 – 2 is funny! Not until that statement was I sure that you are a dope smoker.
This region is one of the most competitive that I have seen in a long time. We have six teams that can compete on any given Friday. I watched Mays play Miller Grove and they looked like they could have beaten anyone that night. Then problem is they are not consistent. That is the difference beteen a #1 seed and a #4 seed. However, I wouldn’t sleep on them if I were Stephenson because we’re not. I expect a competitive game with them at the end of the season @swatguy.

The fans in this region are funny. We try to act like we respect other teams as we give lip service on this blog but at the end of the day we feel our team can beat any team. This is starting to feel like the presidential election. I think even before the debates most people know who they are going to vote for.

What I predict this Friday night is a very good game that is low scoring. Our defense is the best in the region (check the stats before you debate this) and we have yet to give up over two touchdowns. We will see if MLK will fight back after being punched in the mouth. We will not back down and we will keep coming.

@rwdekalb …..actually the playoff sceneraio is like this and it is very complicated

-SWD needs to beat MG and Dunwood and, Mays has to lose one of their last two for SWD to get 4th seed, a loss to MG eliminates SWD

-Mays needs to win out to capture the fouth, but 1 loss by Mays in 1 of the last 2 games and they need SWD to lose one of their last 2 and MG to lose 1 in order to capture 4th seed

-Miller grove needs to win out in order to capture 4th a loss to SWD all but eliminates MG but they would still technically have a shot but it would require SWD to lose against Dunwoody or Mays to beat Stephenson

-If Mays and MG wins out Stephenson would be eliminated

Here is where it gets tricky: If Mays beat Stephenson and SWD beats MG all four teams could potentially be in a four way tie for the last 2 playoffs spots depending on the results of the final week
.
So yea still a lot of football left to be decided. LOL
