Evan Kasian scored on a 12-yard run with 38 seconds remaining to cap a 268-yard night rushing and complete a fourth-quarter rally as the Wolverines beat rival Whitefield Academy Friday to clinch the Region 6-A Division B title.
It was a fitting end to the night for Kasian, who hurt Whitefield Academy in just about every way imaginable.
Kasian carried the ball 38 times, scored two touchdowns and ran in a two-point conversion. He entered the game as the second-leading rusher in Cobb County, trailing only Walton’s Tyren Jones, and pushed his totals to 1,653 yards and 20 touchdowns for the season.
“What can you say,” said Walker coach John East, in his first season with the Wolverines. “He’s quite the running back. I’m very proud of our line, and certainly Patrick McPherson and Bradley Moore as they come in at fullback and keep pounding and leading for him. We came out and miscued on a few things early, but I’m very proud of the fact that we just hung in there.”
But Walker had a few wrinkles in store, as well. Kasian also was 2-for-2 passing for 32 yards, his first two pass attempts of the season. His biggest came on the first play of the fourth quarter, when he threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Crouch on fourth-and-5 to cut the lead to 14-12. His two-point conversion tied the score.
Kasian set up the winning touchdown with a 58-yard punt that pinned Whitefield back on its 15-yard line with a little more than four minutes to play. The Wolverines forced a three-and-out, and Walker took over at the Whitefield 48 after a short punt. It took the Wolverines eight plays to score, with Kasian carrying four times for 28 of the yards.
Walker’s Mitchell Boylan intercepted a pass at the Wolverines’ 31 with less than 20 seconds to play to preserve the victory.
Walker (8-0, 4-0), which came into the game as one of only two unbeaten teams in Class A, is closing in on its first playoff berth since 2005 and its second in the 12-year history of the program. Whitefield Academy (5-3, 3-1) can wrap up second place in the subregion with a victory against Mount Pisgah next week.
Walker outgained the Wolfpack 353-227 and held Whitefield to 49 yards in the second half after trailing 14-6 at halftime.
