The fifth-ranked Tigers took over sole possession of second place in Region 6-AAAAA with a win over the Wolverines at Adams Stadium.
After a scoreless opening period, Tucker’s Detric Dukes crossed the goal line on a 6-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Miller Grove answered with a 65-yard drive, capped off by Ken Allen’s 6-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Vauchon Cojoe.
On the Tigers’ next offensive play, Dominick Sanders took the handoff and burst through the line on his way to a 69-yard score. The Wolverines’ Zavier Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to set up the next touchdown, a 5-yard run around left end by Jonquavious McBride.
The Tucker defense put some points on the scoreboard, as Corey Hunter picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with just under a minute to go before halftime. The Tigers led 21-13 at intermission.
After driving inside the Miller Grove 20 early in the fourth quarter and missing a field goal, Tucker came up with another big play on defense. A second-down pass was tipped by a defensive lineman and intercepted by Kirk Tucker, who ran it back to the Wolverines’ 2. Dallas Rivers took the ball into the end zone on the next play with 6:03 to go.
Miller Grove put together one final drive, with four pass completions from Allen, but a final pass on fourth-and-8 at the Tucker 33 fell incomplete. From there the Tigers were able to keep the ball on the ground and run out the clock.
The Tigers square off against M.L. King next Friday in a battle of the top two teams in the region. The Wolverines face Southwest DeKalb Saturday.
