Tucker 28, Miller Grove 13

The fifth-ranked Tigers took over sole possession of second place in Region 6-AAAAA with a win over the Wolverines at Adams Stadium.

After a scoreless opening period, Tucker’s Detric Dukes crossed the goal line on a 6-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Miller Grove answered with a 65-yard drive, capped off by Ken Allen’s 6-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Vauchon Cojoe.

On the Tigers’ next offensive play, Dominick Sanders took the handoff and burst through the line on his way to a 69-yard score. The Wolverines’ Zavier Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to set up the next touchdown, a 5-yard run around left end by Jonquavious McBride.

The Tucker defense put some points on the scoreboard, as Corey Hunter picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with just under a minute to go before halftime. The Tigers led 21-13 at intermission.

After driving inside the Miller Grove 20 early in the fourth quarter and missing a field goal, Tucker came up with another big play on defense. A second-down pass was tipped by a defensive lineman and intercepted by Kirk Tucker, who ran it back to the Wolverines’ 2. Dallas Rivers took the ball into the end zone on the next play with 6:03 to go.

Miller Grove put together one final drive, with four pass completions from Allen, but a final pass on fourth-and-8 at the Tucker 33 fell incomplete. From there the Tigers were able to keep the ball on the ground and run out the clock.

The Tigers square off against M.L. King next Friday in a battle of the top two teams in the region. The Wolverines face Southwest DeKalb Saturday.

Having seen both teams play the last 2 weeks, Miller Grove should handle SWD easily.

I hate to say this, but this was the 4th game this year I attended in Dekalb Co. with horrible officiating. They are taking it to far with the unsportsmanlike. Word of caution “do not give your teammate high fives or chest bumps after any play” !!! There were five blatant missed false start on both teams and blocks in the back. I hope these are not going to be our playoff refs. geezzz!!!!

Besides that debacle by the officials a good competitive game was being played. Good coaching and the kids played hard on both side of the field. Half-time adjustments made the differance in this one.

Now for the showdown with ML King next week.

Tiger4Life I agree about the officials. What is going on out there? There were bad calls on both teams and obvious penalties missed that everyone in the stands could see. The officials slowed that game to a crawl by taking forever to identify the call. Pitiful job guys.

@ Gomez…I have been feeling the same way! It takes to “eternity” for them to announce the call and move the ball. They seem so indecisive at most times! Definitely slowing the game down to a snails pace! I have to admit….they
do this bad officiating consistently this year!

I agree with all on the officiating and mostly the lack of control by white hat official. Agreeing with Tiger4Life, this type of poor officiating has been in place ALL year against ALL teams.

Miller Grove, shouldn’t hang their heads, this is a quality football team. The sad thing is TWO quality football teams will not make the playoffs and if playing in another 5A region would be playing in the post season, as HIGH seated team.

Tucker Nation, it’s on to meet the Lions for region champion. I said it in early season posts, Nov 2nd would be the deciding game.

The officiating just gets worst in high school football. While I agree, Tucker is a good football team and well coached, I believe several missed “blatant” calls, and questionable unsportsman penalties took the fight out of the Purple and Silver. Case in point, MG drove the ball down inside Tucker’s 5-yard line on its first possession of the 2nd half, but was called for an unsportsman penalty. On the play, the QB Allen kept the ball on a read option, but was stalemated by a host of Tigers. The whistles blew, and momentum stopped. There was nothing flagrant on both ends, but MG gets called on the penalty. That was a garunteed score, that turned into a third-and-goal from the 35 yard line.
In the fourth quarter, there was another bad call. Miller Grove defensive back #12 Quentin Turner made a great play on an attempted wheel route pass to #5 Dominic Sanders. Turner made the incomplete gesture, while Sanders jumped got up and jawed at Turner, as he attempted to get back to the huddle. The unsportsman like was called on Turner, giving Tucker a first down inside the 20.

I could go on, but I made a valid point, that officials are not good anymore. The solution would be mandatory professional development. The flags took away the excitement of a great game.

@Football4Life, I would like to see what you base your prediction on? Its going to be a great game, because of the nature, but I will believe most will say that MG should be favored in this game. I just want the stripes to officiate a great game.

Yall can say what u want and I understand why it is being said. But like I said last week for those that saw/see SWD as an atferthought, will see who is sitting home when the playoffs start.

If you know the officials are going to call certain things when players do it, why do it? Is it necessary to chest bump, hi five or chest pound? No discipline! :-)

If you have a complaint about officials, contact Dr.Ralf Swearingin at the state office in Thomaston. He will listen and is official conscience man.

I have noticed a lot more questionable calls by the referees this year and this is from watching several different games, not sure whats going on with the officiating this year.

Tucker as a real chance to win this game. They have a lot of talent to deploy on the field against MLK. The return of some players like #2 to it line up will boost their potential. But some players not mentioned a lot will have to play big like numbers 1, 42, 55, 17, and 9. But keep your eyes on who I think is a hidden gem of a player #11. He is making some truly solid plays on both sides of the ball and special teams. He has the total package when you are looking for multi-functional player to plug in to make a play.
