Milton hires Keys to replace Boyd as boys basketball coach

Milton, the 2012 Class AAAAA boys basketball champion, named Van Keys on Thursday the interim head coach to replace David Boyd.

Boyd was forced to resign earlier this month amid allegations of undue influence to persuade student-athletes from other schools to transfer to Milton, which won state titles in 2010 and 2012.

Keys, a P.E. instructor at Milton and the school’s girls tennis coach, was head coach for nine seasons at Milton in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also is a Milton alumnus. He has served as athletics director during his 23 years teaching at his alma mater.

Milton graduated four starters, three that signed with ACC or SEC schools. The fifth starter, Jalyn Patteson, transferred to a school in Florida. The team won’t be without some weapons, though. Mo Lewis IV, a key member of the ‘12 team returns with younger brother Chris Lewis, rated by many the top freshman in the state.

…to all of this year’s transfers – did they all go back home after Boyd was fired? If they did it will be interesting to see if the GHSA requires them to sit out…

If everybody would say what they mean, then we would all know what not to do.

The other Round Ball that is — It is still volleyball season, and the AJC has stopped reporting on the sport for some reason. Elite 8 matches this weekend. Come on AJC.

Yes, it would be quite interesting if the 3 transfers that were coming in 5-6 weeks ago will be allowed to play or have gone elsewhere. Please look into that for our curiosity Todd!

How did Van Keys do as a head coach previously?

He did well, I don’t have his year to year records, but good coach and quality guy, worked with him at SFHS when our sons played BB together.

If Milton wants to earn back integrity and respect of this program, then Van Keys is the “PERFECT” choice as well as extremely qualified and more than capable of driving this team at the state/national level of competition. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the game folks, Milton is holding the “Keys” to a very successfull basketball season!
