M.L. King 49, Stephenson 28

In the end, M.L. King just had too many weapons.

Class AAAAA No. 9 Stephenson barely hung around in the first half, but the Jaguars’ defense couldn’t figure out a way to stop the No. 2-ranked Lions in MLK’s 49-28 win.

After its offense had been stagnant for much of the game, Stephenson made two plays for making this a game with its first two sustained drives of the night, starting late in the third quarter.

The first went nine plays, covering 78 yards, and it was the Jaguars’ first multi-play touchdown march. With the Lions (8-0, 7-0 Region 6-AAAAA)missing the extra point after their previous touchdown, it made the score 27-21 as the third quarter wound down.

Their next drive covered 64 yards in eight plays, ending with an Evan Jones touchdown run to get back within six points, at 34-28 with 7:34 left.

But, as was the case most of the night, the defense had no answer for M.L. King’s balanced offense and quick-strike ability either time.

The Lions answered with backbreaking drives. The first went 84 yards in seven plays, the biggest being a 31-yard catch from Donald Clark. The touchdown made it 34-28. They followed that with a big kickoff return, followed by a 37-yard pass to Demarquis Polite-Bray (5 catches, 133 yards, 2 TD) that set up an easy Spencer Williams touchdown run to put the Jaguars (5-2, 5-2) away.

M.L. King dominated the first-half statbook, but Stephenson was right there in the one stat that matters – the one on the scoreboard.

The Lions had 296 total yards, including 210 for quarterback Monquavious Johnson through the air, to Stephenson’s 97. Of the Jags’ 97 first-half yards, 85 came on their first play from scrimmage.

M.L. King’s offense also had massive advantages in first-half plays (43-10), first downs (17-1) and time of possession (17:27-6:33). But penalties and a turnover were big blows that allowed the Jaguars to hang in there early.

Polite-Bray’s night could have been even bigger, but his first-quarter kickoff return for a touchdown was called back due to an illegal block.

Johnson was 17 of 23 for 321 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions. Teammates Jamel Smith (93 yards, 2 TD) and Williams (92 yards, 1 TD) almost hit 100 yards. Stephenson’s Evan Jones had 13 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns, the first coming on an 85-yard run on the Jaguars’ first play from scrimmage.

M         7          14       6          22 – 49

S          14       0          7          7 – 28

M – Demarquis Polite-Bray 14 pass from Monquavious Johnson (Bray kick)

S – Evan Jones 85 run (Wisdom Nzidee kick)

S – Ryan George 75 fumble return (Nzidee kick)

M – Monquavious Johnson 1 run (Presley Bray kick)

M – Polite-Bray 26 pass from Johnson (Bray kick)

M – Jamel Smith 4 run (kick missed)

S – Justin Holman 1 run (Nzidee kick)

M – Smith 2 run (Bray kick)

S – Jones 9 run (Nzidee kick)

M – Spencer Williams 4 run (Polite-Bray pass from Johnson)

M – Wesley Green 70 INT return (Bray kick)

Mad respect for JAB, not much of a Stephenson fan but want them to succeed in the playoffs
because you are a Dekalb team, Jags should at least get to the quarters or semi’s this year. Looking forward to see how the MLK-Tucker game turns out.

Regardless of what seed Stephenson is, they will be a tough out in the playoffs. They might be a three seedfrom what I can see now if they win out, but sometimes that may not be a bad position to be in. You start looking at seedings to see who you may play . I am not sure what region plays against who but let this be known Stephenson will make it past the first & second rounds this year!
Congrats MLK on the victory tonite. Defense just couldn’t stop that offense. I am glad to see some of MLK players that use to play at Stephenson given a chance to play & prove themselves they are good football players.

@JAB don’t worry about our Jags, they will be just fine when playoff time comes around. At worst they are a number 3 seed and I have seen 3 seeds go all they way to the dome. Depends on how the coaches make adjustments as the season goes along.

Hey the team we had in 2007 was good but the team this year is better. The team in 2007 lost in the DOME, to the STATE CHAMPS. My point is MLK has the talent to win it all this year.

My point is clear look at MLK, their head coach is one that was on the staff and took over a the start of the season. He a replacement coach that knows what to do with talent. Stephenson do yourself a favor and reassign who is you first and only head coach. How can you NOT be perpared and performed the way Stephenson did last night, to their biggest rivalry, and not to mention in was Homecoming. For those that this Stephenson team will make it out of the first round of the paly-offs, must be smoking crack. This is a young and talentless Stephenson team.

MLK put a beat down on the Jags last night, we had no answer for their offense . We made no defensive adjustments the whole game. You can’t win in 2012 with a defense you have been using since the 1990’s , it’s time for a coaching change.

Stephenson still has time to work it’s kinks out with 2 tune up games remaining before the state play-off; they shouldn’t hasve no problems with N. Atlanta & Mays, but judging how they played last night Mays could get that “W” if they come out flat… ;)

good job MlK the best coached team last night won this could have gone either way for stephenson but the coaching again last night was lacking…after we went up stephenson went into conservative mood..it seem like we were trying to run the clock out but still had 3qts left…im mean the offense was so predictable 24 lead 23 lead 22 dive 21 dive…no passing game …we didnt even try to establish a balance offense…the defense was confused you would think that #4 could get some help over the top with #10 who’s a stud..but really MLK beat us in the flats…again the stephenson DC not prepared for a good passing attack…he should have taken #4 off #10….personally MLK could win it all they got the right team to do it…AND IT PAINS ME SO MUCH TO SAY IT

Stephenson needs new coaching, they had the ball all of 5 minutes in the entire FIRST quarter because of STUPID plays, they refused to air it out even on 3rd down and long.

That old stephenson saying “We don’t rebuild we reload” is absolutley FALSE this year, they lost over 30 starters last season, alot of the guys on the varsity this year were just on jv last season…this is defiently a rebuilding year. NO WAY a reloaded stephenson team get dominated……even when playing “top teams”

MLK however RELOADED from last year which gave them the edge…..

Fire the ENTIRE Stephenson coaching staff…Stephenson has the most players in NFL in GA, Most players in D1 school in Georgia yet with all that talent that has come through Stephenson, GARTRELL couldn’t get 1 state title????

@Dylan…I agree Stephenson refuse to pass the ball but when they finally did they had a pretty good passing game. I don’t understand why they did not mix pass and run early, bad play calling. On defense that cornerback who kept getting burned was with the receiver every time but somehow he just refuse to look at ball location. He had his back to the ball every time MLK receivers caught long bombs. MLK on the other hand has two GREAT!!! wide receivers and a very good qb. And that big boy running back was a total beast. MLK dominated the game but if Stephenson mix up their plays they probably could have mad it closer, I don’t know if they could have won but they could have made it closer.

The play calling is horrible, you have a bunch of decent backs that just run dive after dive. How hard do you think that is to stop. No pass, no fakes, no misdirection nothing. This is elementary. Herchal Walker would have a hard time running in this offense. And the defensive scheme is the worst I have ever seen. The coaching choice to put #4 on #10 was terrible. #4 is the safety why play him at corner, you have corners. And if you don’t than why in the hell do you have 7 runningbacks. Make 2 or 3 of them corners. It is not rocket science.

To MLK you looked great, period. Keep on rolling you or Tucker has a chance to win it all. Rep Reg6

Lets be honest here Stephenson showed me nothing. They were dominated in all three phases of the game. They had only two sustainable drives in the whole game and only one big pass play. The offense and defense were suspect. MLK had 3 or 4 touchdowns called back on some bogus penalties so the score should’ve been worse than the 21 points. In the first half MLK 43 plays to SHS 10 and 17 first downs to 1 is all thats needed to be said about this game.

@Cam74 that is why we are talking about coaching. 4 is your safety, and a decent safety i might add, he is just a junior, he has played there the last 2 years. So why would you move him to corner to cover one of the best receivers in the state. Corner and safety are not the same. I’ve have played them both so I do know what I’m talking about. You set him up for failure. Now you put your back up safety in his spot, he is not quite there just yet, so you lose something in two position versus one. Either way the scheme suck. Back to back weeks a team has caught a TD with no time on the clock going into the half. Both passes 25 yards or more. At some point you would say hey let’s put some guys in the in zone already, since I think that’s where they want to throw the ball to with no freaken time on the clock. Wow, Wow and Wow. Hey you know what, I just realized I maybe rocket scientist and I didn’t know it. Well I did stay at a holiday inn last night. I had too my friends are MLK fans so I couldn’t go to the party.

Stephenson want win anything and I am a fan . The talent is just not their this year. This is got to be the softes team in Stephenson History. They let MLK do what they wanted to do. The score should have been worst than 49-28. The last 3 years , Stephenson Defense have given up too many points . No other Stephenson Defense have given up TouchDown like these last 3 teams. MLK have a good team hopefully they will stay humble and let their action on the field speak for itself, because that team have a lot of Weapons on Offense.

@Mr johnson- I think you’re getting a little ahead of yourself. Stephenson can’t beat MLK? Aren’t they tied in the overall series? The thing MLK did that Stephenson needs to do is get rid of coaching. People have been saying it for years. MLK has never had more talent then Stephenson (maybe aside from this year). Stephenson has the most players in the NFL and in D1 school in the entire state of GA.Year after year they send over 15 kids to D1 schools. Talent has NEVER been the problem, Stephenson has had talent for days. The COACHING decision is what ultimatley keeps this team disappointed year after year. What kind of coach CONTINUOUSLY runs the ball on 3rd and long, when it didn’t work the first two times? When he FINALLY started running the ball how he should’ve been running it the entire time they got Touchdowns on back to back possesions. They led MLK in the first half but (as we seen with Tucker) instead of keeping the foot on the pedal they decide to play conservative, which is a momentum killer. It was a downward spiral from there as MLK gained momentum.

Like I said before MLK reloaded from last year Stephenson is rebuilding. Lost over 30 starters in the class of 2012. This team is comprised of mostly underclassmen

On a Good note, IF Stephenson gets rid of gartrell and gets someone more competent they will win state. These boys on the stephenson team are young, but talented.. As freshmans, sophmores and juniors look at the level they are playing at? Give them some time to mature these guys are going to be NASTY.

We are a different breed than you, we recognize when a team just out played us, which you did. It’s nothing more. As you see we rebounded and we will suit up to fight another night. You people will never be successful because you’re so negative that you will never see how to compete with the big boys.
