Chattahoochee 29, West Forsyth 28

By David Purdum / For the AJC

Chattahoochee shook up Region 6-AAAAAA with a stunning upset of No. 5 West Forsyth, 29-28, Friday at the Cougars’ field.

Travis Marshall scored on an 8-yard scramble and then found a diving Collin Lisa on the edge of the end zone for a winning two-point conversion with 38 seconds to play.

The Wolverines (7-1, 4-1) reached the Chattahoochee 34 on their ensuing drive, but Timmy Hartshorn’s 51-yard field goal was no good as time expired.

Lisa caught two touchdowns from Marshall, who finished with 227 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Cougars (5-3, 3-3).

West Forsyth entered the game averaging 41 points per game, but found itself in a 7-7 defensive battle in the second half.  Four times, the Wolverines had drives fizzle inside Chattahoochee territory, resulting in three missed field goals and a turnover on downs.

The miscues allowed the Cougars to stay in the game, even though they were getting dominated in time of possession and total yards.

Jake Weiczorek scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 10-yard reception that put the Wolverines up 28-21 with four minutes left.

The Cougars answered with a 10-play, 65-yard drive capped by Marshall’s touchdown run off of a play-action scramble.

Chattahoochee coach Terry Crowder elected to go for two. Marshall rolled out to his right and delivered a strike to Lisa on the side of the end zone.

Momo Camara scored two touchdowns for West Forsyth, who drops back into a tie with Johns Creek in the region. The Wolverines beat Johns Creek 37-16 in Week 6.

C.J. Leggett caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Marshall on a screen for Chattahoochee, which jumps back into the thick of the race for one of the four playoff bids out of the region

Chattahoochee hosts Lambert next week, West Forsyth returns home to face South Forsyth with a chance to clinch the region title.

West Forsyth     7              0              7              14           — 28

This actually makes Region 6-AAAAAA much more interesting. Alpharetta has climbed back into the discussion with an easy win over Lambert and is now tied with JCHS and WFHS for first in the region at 4-1. If Alpharetta and John’s Creek win next week West cannot clinch until week 10. If Alpharetta wins the next 2 weeks, they will finish in at least 2nd place and host a playoff game. Not bad after the 1-3 start.

I thought after WF run in the last games of the play offs last year, they had a pretty good team, I was wrong, No they are not out of it just as Last year, no one gave them a chance at either pay off games last year, and ended up getting beat by the state champs, grayson..

IMO they may not make it as far this year as they did last year…By 1 (one ) point… but again don’t count them out, because Chatt. does have a good team also… Just do not see the state champion coming for either regions, or either team… No disrespect intended… There will be better day ahead..

This wasn’t the only one of the top ranked team that dropped their first one.

Hey NG17 and fellow haters – .

Do I agree these teams are at a huge disadvantage to the Gwinnett and South Ga megaschools – heck yeah and shame on Ralph Swearinger and the GHSA for allowing this megaschool monopoly to occur.

That said – you Gwinnett boyz should just keep believing that your 18 yr olds can whip our 18 yr olds every day. That’s what makes upsets so fun – overconfident kids. One or more Gwinnett teams will go down in the first round – could be NG?

I agree with Hoochfan. Impressive comeback win after losing a tough one last week. Hats off to Coach Crowder for getting them ready and then trusting his kids and going for 2 at the end to get the win.

The game was rigged. I go to Chattahoochee and I think West Forsyth should have won. First of all, the reason Harthorn’s kick did not count was NOT because “time expired.” The time moderator had the reflexes of a sloth and would not stop the time right after each play was finished, making the players lose at least 10 crucial seconds of play time overall. And Hartshorn’s kick did in fact make it in. Also, Chattahoochee’s two point conversion was caught WAY out of bounds, yet the refs still counted it because they just wanted us to win so much that they were willing to bend the rules for us. When the game was not even over, us fans were allowed to storm the field, which is against the rules but we were just so excited that we beat an undefeated team on our homecoming night through cheating. By the way, you spelled Wieczorek’s name wrong.

Thanks for offering an unbiased account of this matchup. Overall, the officiating this season in Region 6 AAAAAA games have been pathetic and this game was the crown jewel. The clock official needs a shot of Red Bull before he approaches the controls as he (or she) truly did have the reflexes of a sloth (or slug?) and it cost WF dearly on multiple occasions. Also, we had spoken with several people since last night that had watched the game via live streaming on the internet and they all indicated that the Hartshorn kick was through the uprights. Guess these officials need to visit their Optometrist as well. However, aside from all the gaffs from the (Un)Officials, the WF kids just didn’t play to their previous levels and it is what it is. Gotta put it behind you and move on to the next game. I will disagree with you Hooch however on the 2-point Cougar conversion pass in the final seconds. I was standing right there on the sideline it was caught and while the actual catch was indeed way outside of the sideline, the receiver’s feet were definately inbounds and for once the official got it right…but it was one of few correctly made calls. In fact, WF QB A.J. Erdely was called earlier for intentional grounding when he made his pass from the freakin’ sideline? Since when was the pocket expanded this far??? Jeeze, best of luck to those of us in Region 6 AAAAAA that still have games left under this type of officiating.

Hooch played good game.. Regs should never work another game… 2 pt conversion was worst call ever…West’s defense has alot to improve on… As far as Gwinnett county goes???? doing alot of talking … alot of talking.. Most likely a self confidence issue… If you have to brag… ???

The entire WFHS band, 150 of us, sat directly behind the goal post and watched a field goal by West soar straight through but the refs said it was no good. Chattahoochee also caught a 2-point conversion about out of bounds but the refs didn’t call it, and whoever was managing the clock had the reflexes of a sloth, sometimes waiting over 5 seconds to stop the clock, and even letting it run continuously when it was supposed to be stopped. West won that game but the referees didn’t do their job.

congrats to Hooch wasn’t at the game so don’t have a dog in the fight but the refs are horrible all over 6A this year. With that being said WF has great offensive weapon in Mr Erdley and good players around him. But as long as their Defense is as good at stopping good offenses as a colander is for catching water then this will be a long and hard post season run for them. Hooch I know the Qb is good and mobile and 13 catches everything, but please use the backs more. Good luck to both teams.

I go to West Forsyth, and I’m friends with Wieczorek. Their 2 point conversion was a heck of catch, and he was in bounds. Diving catch with both feet in by a foot or more. Can view this catch on Comcast xVinity under local, sports, high school highlights. We had our shots. Give credit to their defense who slowed us down and gave us difficult field positions most times. We are still #1 seed and will be Region Champs. Not bad for a new school.

@jaycee there is no pocket rule in high school football, intentional grounding can be called from anywhere

@Hooch, there’s no damn way you go to CHS. First off if you did, you’d would have been on the Hooch side of the field and would not have had a good view of Colin Lisa’s feet, Next, the official game clock is actually kept on the field by one of the ref’s. The clock operator only responds to the actions of the refs on the field on whether to stop the clock or not. On the missed field goal, there is a ref under each upright and a ref behind the kicker, plus there was no protest coming from the WF players or coaches that the kick was good. Finally and this is the kicker, I know for a fact that the Hooch fans did not storm the field before play was over. That gate is kept locked by Officer Walker and is not opened until the game is over. I really believe that you are nothing but a cry baby WF fan that cannot stand the fact that you will not have that perfect season, much like Hooch did in 2010, STATE CHAMPS a perfect 15 – 0 record.

I agree the time keeper was slow, but I don’t think three seconds would have saved you. The likelihood of you throwing a touchdown pass at that time was very slim, and even if you had moved the ball to make it a 40-yard attempt instead of a 51-yarder, you guys already missed two of two that night, and the kick was already about 15 yards short anyway, so you still wouldn’t have scored most likely. Overall though, you guys played a great game, and you deserve to be #1 in the region. We’ll see you in the playoffs, gunning for the number 3 seed.

@DaCoach- Maybe you ought to watch the replay…his feet wasn’t down as he was flying through the air to catch the ball. I can send you a clip if you like…and the fans did storm the field before the game was over…didn’t you see them all being directed off the field for the final kick?? Congrats on the perfect season in 2010…but, this is 2012 and playing Norcross in the first round will seperate the men from the boys…sorry we won’t see you again deep in the playoffs; but, hey…atleast you will make the playoffs, right? Just not past the first round…best of luck :)

First of all, the 2 pt conversion was good and an amazing catch. But as for the field goal during the 3rd quarter, it was clearly good and a bad call by the referee. I have reviewed the film from the game and the kick was clearly inside the right goal post by 3 or 4 yrds. Score should be 31 – 29 west.

Unfortunately the team of referees at the game were out to ensure that West did not come out with a win.

But the worst part was that during the game someone from Chattahoochee stole several of the West players bags and personal belonging. I did not realize that we were playing down in the Hood.

WF… Get over it… you lost move on… But I can tell you this, from I saw on Friday night WF will win the region and get bounced in the 2nd round… We had 4 three and outs in the first half ( 6 total) along with 15 penalties… plus you guys had field position most of the night and WF should have been up by 21 pts… your special teams and kicking game is a tremendous weakness for your squad and it was exposed. Championship teams put a team that is playing anemic offense away and enforce their will on them… you simply did not… @ Gulo Gulo you were not playing in the Hood but I certainly would expect that comment coming from a Hick in the sticks of Forsyth County….

Good Luck the rest of the season!!

@Anakin Skywalker, I am anything but a Hick. Clearly you do not know the demographics of the population of the West Forsyth district.

When we have teams playing in our stadium we actually provide them a locker room where they can lock up their belongings Not that our crime rate is no where near as high as where we played Friday night.

I fully understand that we did not play our best Friday and we had several opportunities where we should have scored but went away empty handed. I just believe that the referees should be impartial and call a fair game and that is not what happened this past Friday!

We will win our region as we continue on our path to the Dome!

@WTG49. Those were not the fans, those were the players, and they were being directed back by the coaches. Now if there were some non players that were on the field, yes maybe they went out, but not the fans, What replay were you watching, not the iHigh replay I hope, Those two bone head announcers couldn’t see in front of their noses, nonetheless it’s what the refs saw and not us. I would love to watch that replay, why don’t you post the link on here so we all can see it. As for this year’s playoffs, if Hooch makes it in, who knows. You guys weren’t suppose to mount any challenges last year and you make it down to the quarter finals I believe against Grayson. So who really knows, it depends on which teams shows up. Like last week, Hooch did and West Forsyth didn’t. Hooch was 20 point underdogs. Hooch is really a 4A/5A school, if it wasn’t for some 120 kids from Banneker High School (South Fulton County), which put Hooch 20 heads over into the 5A/6A level because of some Fulton County No Child Left Behind BS, which most of them returned to Banneker, they would be in the proper athletic level. Any how, Good Luck with the rest of your season, WF will win the region and if we don’t progress deep into the playoffs, I will be rooting for you, because I believe in our region 6AAAAAA and want to see us do well. It benefits all of us.

@Anakin Skywalker, you must understand @Gulo Gulo, they’re not hayseed hicks, they belong to Hawks Ridge Golf Club and stable their ponies at the Polo Club. Folks, like us, carry their golf bags and tend to their ponies. We are just the Hoi polloi to them. But one thing our players have that they will never have, are State Champion rings from a perfect season 15 – 0. In the 20 years of coaching and the 15 years of playing, I have never seen a bigger bunch of cry babies about losing a game. OMG get over it, go beat South Forsyth and Lambert and be the #1 seed from 6AAAAAA and represent the region well.

@Da coach, If you are a real coach, you should do your job on the current team and quit living in the past. If I remember correctly, I think your school had more students that some 5A teams when you were playing 4A = so quit whining and making excuses for your current team. Maybe with the GHSA crackdowns on recruiting, you have to depend on your own talent pool. The Gwinnett teams you will have to play IF you make it to the playoffs will have you really living in the past.
