Maxwell Ratings: Camden County hangs on to No. 1 in all classes; computer still likes Buford in AAA, forfeits aside

Each week, AJC.com will publish the Maxwell Ratings to give fans a computerized look at how Georgia’s 412 football-playing teams rank in each class and in all classifications.

Below are the rankings through games of Oct. 20.

The Maxwell Ratings are based strictly on scores. As the season progresses, the rankings will rely more and more on this season’s results and less on previous seasons. By the playoffs, the rankings will reflect 2012 results entirely.

Norcross is 8-0 and has defeated 6 teams in the Maxwell Top 20.

Is there anyone else on this list that can claim the same?

Norcross is the best team in the state!!!!

Buford will play throughout the playoffs with their backs to the wall & be all the better for the bogus 4 plays during mop-up time over 2 124-0 games…..

Cross… Worry not, the AAAAAA championship will come from within Gwinnett Co, as it has 6 of the past 12 years (That’s not including Buford or Wesleyan n the other classifications)

I have seen Norcross play and they don’t want none of Grayson(possible second round match up in playoffs),and for Buford i don’t think this is a state championship team. Here are your 5 state championship teams,Camden,Tucker,Sandy Creek,Peach,Calhoun,ECI(not counting private schools).

@Jacketaxe: “Nobody cares if Buford cheats, in the computer rankings.”

You have to keep the ratings in perspective. Their purpose is to measure the strength of teams, which is reflected from on-field performance and not administrative actions. Even though Buford had to administratively forfeit two games, they have the same team taking the field come this Friday that they’ve had all season.

Not so fast(Lee Crosco style – lol)Grayson and Camden will play in the Semi – Finals.Norcross is loaded with talent but Grayson has the X-FACTOR named Mr. Robert Nkemdiche.

Jeff-I can’t wait for everyone to watch our O-line neutralize their D-line. Do you think Kamara and Autry gain all those yards and tds by themselves?

Norcross us the best team in State if Georgia and we will be crowned in Decrmber!

Mr. Maxwell with all due respect, something has to be wrong with one of your processors because Norcross has beaten 6 teams in your top 25 and that should drive them to the top ranked team. Please throw away the Commodore 64 you are computing on and buy the IBM super computer which loves this Norcross team and rightfully so. They are a special group!

Norcross is the best team in the State of Georgia.

The Cross- maybe you’re new here in Georgia…but we have something in place that proves who the best team in the state every year. It’s called “playoffs” and the challenge it presents has ruined many, many dreams birthed from impressive regular season performances. It will be historic new ground for Norcross to make it out of the quarterfinals…they’ve never done it.

jeff- if Grayson is R8 #2 seed and Camden R1 #1 seed, there is no possible way for them to play in the semis. They’ll be in the same upper right bracket and possibly meet in the quarters.

You are right OMacG,I looked at the brackets wrong. The two best teams playing in the Quarters WOW.I wished i could go to that game.

Treat the forfeits as if the scores were reversed and plug that in and see what you get. Buford will still rank high.

The computer really don’t care how you win, legal or not is fact indeed.

Note that the difference between Norcross and Camden County is these ratings is 2/3 of one point. I’m sure I’m correct to say that the Maxwell Ratings would project the Norcross-Camden County winner to be whichever were the home team.

@The Cross said “Jeff-I can’t wait for everyone to watch our O-line neutralize their D-line. Do you think Kamara and Autry gain all those yards and tds by themselves?” referring to the Grayson D line.

There have been more than one or two teams that have said that but the felt the difference that reality brings. Ask Walton from last year’s championship game. If was difficult to be polite for Jones to run the ball when our defenders were arriving at the QB at the same time or before he was being handed the ball. The South QB is a great passer but got called for intentional grounding twice and was held to less than 50 yards all night because it is difficult to throw accurate passes when you are running for your life or looking up at the stars from on the ground.

I’m not saying Grayson is an automatic winner, I know better than that. You might want to temper a little bit of your certainty. There are basically 3 other posters to the AJC boards that exhibit that degree of certainty and they have all been humbled at one point or another.

OmacG- I’m not new here, in fact I have been involved in Georgia High School football for over 30 years. What most of you aren’t getting is my spoof on the South Georgia arrogance that feel they have a monopoly on good football. I realize there are playoffs and I realize that with 15-18 year olds that hat anything can happen. The one thing that I know for sure is this Norcross team is good, really good and they have the most quality wins of ANyBODY in the state.

We will see in about 4 weeks what transpires, but I like Norcross’ chances versus anyone in 6A.

Fred- I am aware of Grayson’s power in the box, but I also see a very good well coached O-line at Norcross who won’t be pushed around. We played South Gwinnett as well and our line is twice as good as theirs so no real value in comparing the two. We look forward to the challenge. I will say we played and beat Parkview unlike Grayson and I don’t care how many turnovers or penalties you had if you let that offense score 20, we will score 40+.

@The Cross: “I am guessing that you aren’t including the win at Colquitt County which was a live preseason scrimmage.”

No, I don’t recommend putting any weight into preseason scrimmage games. Sportsnut was using a 26-2 preseason 7-on-7 victory as evidence that Lovejoy was better than Colquitt County only to have Colquitt County win 14-7 in the regular season rematch (yes, I had to call you out sportsnut!).

My point being that preseason scrimmages are played for very different reasons that regular season games and coaches and players treat them differently.

Still, Norcross has had a great year and the ratings reflect that. They are, as Todd point out, only a fraction of a point behind Camden County and certainly in a position to jump ahead on any given weekend.

@The Cross – Norcross gave up 41 points to Mill Creek and won by 8. Brookwood gave up 21 to Mill Creek and won by 10. Brookwood doesn’t have much of a defense this year. Doesn’t say much for Norcross D, does it? If, for a moment, anybody that thinks Norcross is the best team in Georgia right now, you have a lot of explaining to do, The most Camden has given up is 12, twice, and have given up fewer points this season (37) than Norcross did in one game. Glad that Norcross is doing so well, but you’re not helping them a bit, in my opinion. Anybody in the playoffs will look at what Mill Creek did, and know Norcross can give up 41 points.

GwinnettDad

October 24th, 2012
10:05 pm

So, if anybody had to bet their future on picking from two teams, one that has given up 37 points so far (in 7 games), and the other 112 (in 8 games), with the offenses being roughly equal, I wonder what that choice would be? Or, would there be any choice at all? Only if one has a fish in the fire, or wants to be on the longshot, which is OK. But it STILL has to be called a long shot. SOS is probably about equal, I’d think, too.

GwinnettDad

But it also would be terribly unfair to mention that last year Norcross lost 17-10 to a team in the first round of the playoffs it had beaten 35-7 in the regular season, so I won’t bring it up. Gwinnett-You obviously know a lot more than I do, but let me try to educate you if I may.

Number 1- Norcross was beating Mill Creek 38-14 midway through the third quarter. We called off the dogs, but Mill Creek caught fire scoring 21 points in 8 minutes on our second D. The game was never in jeopardy but I believed we learned our lesson there. We beat Parkview 20-0…does that mean our defense is far superior to Grayson’s who gave up 22 points? Your statement/argument borders on moronic.

Number 2-SoS is not even close. If you look at MaxPreps or Freeman, Norcross’s SoS is approximately 40% more difficult. We have beaten 5 teams in Maxwell’s top 25 and 6 if you count the win against Colquitt in our pre-season

Number 3-If you watched the Dacula game in last years playoffs, which I am quite positive that you did not…Norcross outgained Dacula by 75 more yards than we did in the 35-7 beating that we put on them in the regular season, but had three TD’s called back by phantom Offensive pass interference. The GHSA actually wrote Maloof an apology letter for what they called extremely questionable judgement calls in that playoff game.

I hope that you have been educated now GwinnettDad…I have said this before to a few other posters but you obviously have not read it. It is better to remain silent and appear ignorant than open your mouth and remove all possible doubt.

Historically, Norcross is 291-253. Better than average. Barely.

@The Cross – Made me laugh! Shame I don’t bet because that 40 point foolishness was so funny I laughed out loud! In our 145 game history only 3 teams have put up 40 or more on us and that was in 04 &05. Since 05, only 2 teams have put up 30 or more – Brookwood in 05 (37) and Colquitt in 10 & 11 (31 both years.) While I don’t bet I probably can find someone that would take that bet.

You put waaaay to much faith in the transitive property comparing teams’ common opponents. For every game/team you can show where it works I can show a combination where it didn’t work. At best you can only judge that team on that night. If you really want to carry through, let’s look at our other common opponent – South Gwinnett. You won 35-20, we won 41-0. See, there really isn’t a ton of validity in the comparison. Norcross has a good team this year. Enjoy it and try not to make a fool of yourself.

There is no value in being so arrogant. You sound like a high school student fan or a wishful thinking college student fan. IF you have been around 30+ years…then you would have to be in your upper 30’s or mid 40’s at least. IF that is true, then you are one hell of a bad example to these respectable young men who play under the lights. You are a fully grown and experienced adult that verbally vomits on this blog like a 15 year old kid who thinks they know everything. Actually his argument is fashioned from logic and rational thought process….not arrogance and boasting. Based on this comment you made, NG’s defense is BETTER than Norcross because we only gave up 28 to Mill Creek. To say that Parkview’s defense is THAT much better than Grayson’s (if even better at all) because Grayson turned the ball over FOUR times on their side of the 50 is “moronic”. I wonder what you would have said if your blue Devils had lost to Parkview with FOUR turnovers on your side of the 50. Save me the headache and just stop. Also, you claim that you rationalize your arguments based on the results produced on the field, but in reading your comments I find it utterly obvious that all you interpret are the NUMBERS. That is called a contradiction. You obsess over rankings that mean nothing, but claim that you rely on the “on-the-field” product. You CAN NOT compare scores to justify your argument on why you think Norcross is the best thing since sliced bread. I was at the MC vs. Norcross game, and Maloof panicked when MC started coming back. He put EVERYONE back in after MC’s second TD. Norcross held on for dear life. For anyone interested, google that game and watch for yourself. Your “logic” would imply that NG is actually better than Norcross because NG beat MC convincingly in the last 3 quarters. A problem with your “logic” though, we lost to ya’ll weeks before. See the problem? Regardless, you know everything with your “30+ year football experience” so I guess we will all have to agree…

@ everyone—You certainly cannot compare scores from previous games to validate your point. You can throw all the stats and scores out of the window. The only thing that matters is who is the best team come play-off time. Our Camden Wildcats have won in the playoffs; therefore I think experience in big games is paramount. What will the teams do when it is win or go home? Can they handle the pressure? All I can say is the Camden Wildcats will be ready come play-off time. No trash talking, just lining up and playing football. The last time we won the state championship the score was Camden 31 Northside Warner Robins 3. Many of our current seniors were part of that team. Our kids know what it means to play in big play-off games. Best of luck to everyone. Showing class on and off the field will never have anything to do with the final score. If I thought my team was as good as Norcross I would downplay their ability to win games. It is crazy to put a bulls-eye on your back. A lot of talk means you will have to put up or shut up. Teams that haven’t been there and done that have difficulty winning the big one.

hey who knew parkview would of beat grayson. It can happen. It can happen to Camden, It can happen Lassiter, it can happen to norcross. So aside the argument between ng09 , gwinnett dad etc. It’s not what happens regular season but what happens in the post. so what norcross gave up some points to MC. when they play that number 1 seed it wont matter.

Thanks to the fellow that described ‘The Sauce’ as Norcross’s BK. Wish I’d thought of that. From now on, he’s ‘The Sauce’. Anybody with THAT swelled a head HAS to be on sumthin. Camden74 picked right up on that too. The little fellow is trying to BE somebody.

These ratings compute scores. They don’t consider classification. I guess it’s all a matter of opinion, but I’d feel confident that the best four teams in AAAAAA would sweep those four you mention if they played 1-4 head to head. Burke, for one, has lost to a AAA team.
