Buford forfeits two football wins for using ineligible player

Buford forfeited victories over Banks County and West Hall on Monday for the use of an ineligible player, the GHSA announced.

The player, who was not named, did not have the required units of credit to be eligible academically. Buford reported the incident to the GHSA.

The player participated only in two plays in each game, one a 63-0 victory over Banks County on Sept. 28, the other a 61-0 victory over West Hall on Oct. 10.

Buford’s record falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAA. The forfeits put North Hall (6-1, 4-0) in the lead in 7-AAA and put five teams with 2-2 records: Buford, Dawson County, White County, Banks County and West Hall.

If North Hall loses no more than one game, North Hall will win the region. Buford has won region titles 10 of the past 11 seasons, failing only in 2009, when the Wolves still won a Class AA state title.

In a press released issued Monday afternoon, Buford stated that its athletics department discovered last week that the player’s name had been inadvertently left off a required GHSA eligibility form.

”Upon checking student records, it was determined that the football player did pass the required classes last semester; however, was not on track for graduation and did not have the total number of Carnegie units required to be eligible for athletic participation,” the press release stated.

The forfeits now represent 25 percent of the games lost by Buford since Jess Simpson became coach in 2005. Simpson’s record, formerly 102-6, is now 100-8.

truth be known it is probably a ploy to evade better teams in the playoffs….I guess to position themselves more in a more favorably in the playoffs……IMO.

Sad to hear. However, I think they will still make the playoffs with the games they have remaining. Speaking of that, who are their remaining games against? Are the above mentioned teams on their schedule ?

This is only the tip of the iceberg to the cheating that goes on at Buford State University. They recruit the state better than Ga Tech & Georgia!

Golden Isle… No ploy.. How can being the #2 seed (instead of #1) going to help ya in the playoffs??

This will have no effect on the field.. With or without him, Buford would’ve won, as they will in the playoffs…

Hey Return Home,

Why don’t you lay out your documented proof that Buford is cheating and turn them in to the GHSA. If there is wrongdoing like with Shiloh’s football coach or Milton’s basketball coach or Buford in this case, I’m sure the association will act.
However, if you don’t have proof to back up your claims, then you are worse than the actual cheaters. All you are doing is dragging someone’s name though the mud for no good reason.

Seems to me the article said Buford forfeited the games due to a player not have the correct Grade Point Average. They even self reported it. No one has said anything about illegal recruited players. What are you people smoking?

Article updated to note explain how the player was ineligible, and also that he participated in two plays in each of those games.

Buford almost definitely will finish in second place now and be projected to play on the road at #1 Peach County in the quarterfinals. Chances of getting to the championship game definitely go down.

Cobbfootball…it is definitely a known fact among all who live in the West Hall area that Buford has recruited several of our players over the years!! It has been reported and yet the great cover-up continues.

Nice to see a high school self-reporting and actually taking the losses. I guess this goes down as the biggest victories for those two high schools this year, right?

I should add that Buford first must win at North Oconee in the second round just to make the QF and a potential game at Peach County. Win the region, and Buford might’ve played 4 home games to the Dome. Definitely harder.

I’m all for school loyalty, but “Return home Local Spartans” is way off base when he accuses Buford and other schools of recruiting players. The TRUTH is, winning is the best recruiting tool. Athletes want to play for a winner and have a chance to play for a championship. Nothing against West Hall but right now they don’t have the athletes to win at the state level. So Mr. Spartan, crawl back into your hole.

They don’t have to recruit. Families are lining up to bring their kids to the school for the academics, facilities and yes the sports. The class sizes are small and the admisnistration does not put up with any “stuff” which parents love (the kids may not). Anyone who has an opportunity or the means to send their kids there would be crazy not to. This was a self policing action. How many schools would have turned themselves in?

@ return home, Maybe you should be asking the question why do families want to leave West Hall to go to Buford or Gainsville or Flowery branch or anyone else you want to blame. If you have facts lay them out before the GHSA.

But this IS a 20 year known epidemic that has been covered up by multi-million dollar connected benefactors and county commision influence and crafty work on a lot of levels. ntil the facts are nailed you are somewhat correct.

Jeez. If your school is a winner, people will seek you out to play on your team. If you are a great player on a losing team, chance are that you will go somewhere else where your talents will be noticed. It doesn’t take a huge conspiracy to get a great player on a lousy team to move elsewhere. Applying Occam’s razor, just the fact that West Hall sucks is enough for great players to simply go elsewhere… no conspiracy necessary!

All the haters out there… LOL all over yourselves…

Look, you probably have not been to Buford & seen the facilities there.. All ya need to go to school there is $2,000. a year for tuition.. Your child could go there & have state of the art facilities that stack up with ANY high school in the state AAAAAA thru A..

As for the DA that stated that the Wolves coaches could not win at another school, you are ignorant… There’s a feeder program in Gwinnett County that’s tops in Ga if not top 5 in the entire country. Called Gwinnett Football League… The “small school” from the county has numerous champions from 6 year-olds thru 13 year-olds… This is where it all starts!! & you should see the facilities there!! as good or better than most junior colleges!!

Appreciate & Quit the HATE… (Or actually get involved in YOUR school!)

ReturnHomeLocalSpartans – Can you read or are you just incapable of comprehending the article. If you’re schools weren’t so crappy, parents wouldn’t pay to send them to Buford. I think you should look at your own house. We’re still in the playoffs and were Pi$$ed.

Poetic justice that the two forfeits come to banks and WH. Buford beat them by a combined 120+ to 0. Not very neighborly in your new region. The constant question is “Why does Buford not play up” like Marist? It really must be boring taking a southeastern all star team and whipping up on poor rural mountain schools. They whinned like babies last reclassification to get away from the private schools in Atlanta and cited safety issues traveling I-85.

Whether they recruit or not, it is a fact that well over 50% of their students are migrant or have been brought in to government homes. The $2000 tuition is a sham. That is not offered to just anyone. You must be accepted because of your tithes, talents and/or both. Did the young man play in other games? Did they just self report enough to not knock them out of a playoff birth? Have they faced the music in their own region?

This was NOT for cheating. People are so wound up with bashing Buford they don’t see this was because some young man didn’t keep his grades up and played 4 (count them 4) plays that had ZERO effect on those games other then maybe an attempt to get some young man a letter on his jacket. Buford turned themselves in and there was no cover up so I don’t see any reason for the hate other than maybe spite.
