Buford forfeited victories over Banks County and West Hall on Monday for the use of an ineligible player, the GHSA announced.
The player, who was not named, did not have the required units of credit to be eligible academically. Buford reported the incident to the GHSA.
The player participated only in two plays in each game, one a 63-0 victory over Banks County on Sept. 28, the other a 61-0 victory over West Hall on Oct. 10.
Buford’s record falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAA. The forfeits put North Hall (6-1, 4-0) in the lead in 7-AAA and put five teams with 2-2 records: Buford, Dawson County, White County, Banks County and West Hall.
If North Hall loses no more than one game, North Hall will win the region. Buford has won region titles 10 of the past 11 seasons, failing only in 2009, when the Wolves still won a Class AA state title.
In a press released issued Monday afternoon, Buford stated that its athletics department discovered last week that the player’s name had been inadvertently left off a required GHSA eligibility form.
”Upon checking student records, it was determined that the football player did pass the required classes last semester; however, was not on track for graduation and did not have the total number of Carnegie units required to be eligible for athletic participation,” the press release stated.
The forfeits now represent 25 percent of the games lost by Buford since Jess Simpson became coach in 2005. Simpson’s record, formerly 102-6, is now 100-8.

Hey Return Home,
Why don’t you lay out your documented proof that Buford is cheating and turn them in to the GHSA. If there is wrongdoing like with Shiloh’s football coach or Milton’s basketball coach or Buford in this case, I’m sure the association will act.
However, if you don’t have proof to back up your claims, then you are worse than the actual cheaters. All you are doing is dragging someone’s name though the mud for no good reason.

I should add that Buford first must win at North Oconee in the second round just to make the QF and a potential game at Peach County. Win the region, and Buford might’ve played 4 home games to the Dome. Definitely harder.

I’m all for school loyalty, but “Return home Local Spartans” is way off base when he accuses Buford and other schools of recruiting players. The TRUTH is, winning is the best recruiting tool. Athletes want to play for a winner and have a chance to play for a championship. Nothing against West Hall but right now they don’t have the athletes to win at the state level. So Mr. Spartan, crawl back into your hole.

They don’t have to recruit. Families are lining up to bring their kids to the school for the academics, facilities and yes the sports. The class sizes are small and the admisnistration does not put up with any “stuff” which parents love (the kids may not). Anyone who has an opportunity or the means to send their kids there would be crazy not to. This was a self policing action. How many schools would have turned themselves in?

Jeez. If your school is a winner, people will seek you out to play on your team. If you are a great player on a losing team, chance are that you will go somewhere else where your talents will be noticed. It doesn’t take a huge conspiracy to get a great player on a lousy team to move elsewhere. Applying Occam’s razor, just the fact that West Hall sucks is enough for great players to simply go elsewhere… no conspiracy necessary!

As for the DA that stated that the Wolves coaches could not win at another school, you are ignorant… There’s a feeder program in Gwinnett County that’s tops in Ga if not top 5 in the entire country. Called Gwinnett Football League… The “small school” from the county has numerous champions from 6 year-olds thru 13 year-olds… This is where it all starts!! & you should see the facilities there!! as good or better than most junior colleges!!

Poetic justice that the two forfeits come to banks and WH. Buford beat them by a combined 120+ to 0. Not very neighborly in your new region. The constant question is “Why does Buford not play up” like Marist? It really must be boring taking a southeastern all star team and whipping up on poor rural mountain schools. They whinned like babies last reclassification to get away from the private schools in Atlanta and cited safety issues traveling I-85.
Whether they recruit or not, it is a fact that well over 50% of their students are migrant or have been brought in to government homes. The $2000 tuition is a sham. That is not offered to just anyone. You must be accepted because of your tithes, talents and/or both. Did the young man play in other games? Did they just self report enough to not knock them out of a playoff birth? Have they faced the music in their own region?

This was NOT for cheating. People are so wound up with bashing Buford they don’t see this was because some young man didn’t keep his grades up and played 4 (count them 4) plays that had ZERO effect on those games other then maybe an attempt to get some young man a letter on his jacket. Buford turned themselves in and there was no cover up so I don’t see any reason for the hate other than maybe spite.

Buford players are committed that’s why they succeed! Maybe if other schools had committed team players they might get on Buford’s level. Yes they might have used some player not academically able, but atleast they admitted it and came forward… Buford isn’t a cheater, all the coachs and players have their heart and soul put into all their sport of choice…
For those of you saying Buford is a Cheater…. GIVE ME PROOF!! This one doesn’t court because they had the guts to come forward and forfeit these games! If they wanted to cheat they could have went and changed grades around and made him eligible, but no they didn’t do that!

Neither I nor grayram said *anything* that was denigrating in any way to Camden. You are all over the blogs claiming your team is all that and a bag of chips. Many people are saying you are the team to beat in 6A this year. It looks a lot like grayram was acknowledging that and your recent record. If that bothers you, then look at the records. Buford has 8 state titles, Camden has 3. His statement is true. Camden has more recent titles than Valdosta or Lowndes. It is natural to look at recent results to compare against. Grayson only has 1. Why would anyone compare 8 titles against 1? I certainly wouldn’t and I’m pretty sure grayram wasn’t either.

Buford – another one of those high school programs that has always flown under the GHSA radar with the student eligibility stuff. When is the GHSA going to go after these districts that have a revolving door transfer system in place? Who was going to turn them in if they didn’t report the player?
Kind of silly that we have a governing body in place – GHSA and they do NOTHING to curb all the transfer and eligibility issues that are quietly swept under the rug each and every season. Step up and get high school sports in line – academically and athletically – PLEASE. Stop going after Bethlehem Elementary School and make a point with these powerhouse programs. If the schools see that you mean business, they will straighten up their acts.
Problem is – that will never happen – GHSA could care less about GEORGIA high school athletics. What a waste!

Im a buford backer or a north hall hater, but buford will trounce the trojans. I have seen both teams play. Here is why buford wins by 20+. Bufords ball control offense will keep ball away from norths ground n pound machine, ergo north wont run nearly as many offensive snaps as usual which is what north does to wear down the opposing defense. Also norths D wont be able to stop bufords offense which is getting better every game. Also north has a history of getting blown out by better teams. Couple that with the fact that Buford now feels like they have something to prove, watch out. It may be a 30 point blowout. Bank on it.
My dad is a tv repairman. I can fix it.

@Camden74 said “Fred……Why would anyone compare 8 titles with 3? Pat Grayson on the back, they need it more than Camden does….. ” Unbelievable! Two people from one of your competitors compliment your program talking about it in the top tier and you can’t see it for some unknown reason. That must not be a chip on your shoulder, more like a giant redwood. By the way, I do pat the program at Grayson on the back regularly as they have come a long way in a short time but not because they need it more than Camden does. Ah well, enough said on this topic.

@Shay – No, I am quite pleased where my kid went, thank you very much.
I don’t know and don’t really know where to look but to me the question should be how many kids playing football at Buford live in the city limits and what percentage of the team that constitutes. Then I would look at how many of the impact players live in the city limits and what percentage of the team that constitutes. That would probably answer the question about so called recruiting. Yes, I realize Buford has open enrollment with payment of the nominal tuition fees and anyone can legally choose to send their kid(s) there but to my mind, that makes them more like a private school that can and does recruit.
Interesting

I’m not sure you can call it recruiting when the kids and the parents are lining up at the door …… Maybe enlisting, but not recruiting. lol
I’m also pretty sure, with all of the proof I see many claiming to have, that if “the proof” was all forwarded to the GHSA, they might have looked into it and it seems from all of the post with proof that I see, it should be a pretty open and shut case against Buford.
And I am also pretty sure that if all this proof was documented with the GHSA, that it would be pretty difficult for them to take the “under the table” money that is also alleged quite freguently.
And I’m also pretty sure that if many of you that are smacking Buford around lived close enough to the University (LOL), that you to would probably sign your kid up if he (or she because it is not just a football program but a sports program) was a good athlete as it offers them a much better avenue to a scholarship.
I’m just saying …………………

@All the folks that are claiming that great players want to come to Buford for recruiting…I call BS. If you are a great talent and can play ANY sport, and you stand out in your sport, and you have a very supportive coach(es), you will be recruited. Period. So don’t use that excuse as to why Buford gets the players they “attract”.

Camden74, Fred:
I used Camden as an example because i was responding to Camden74’s “where is Wolfie” comment . There was nothing backhanded intended. I have some friends that live in the Camden district so i have been keeping up with them for several years and have always been impressed. I love the way Camden represents Georgia against out of state teams and they are certainly among the best in the state every year. Buford is another of Georgia’s elite teams year in and year out.

@grayram & @That Dude Says… – I’m over it. You try to give the man a compliment and he can’t accept it, well that’s his problem. Won’t be hearing it from me again this year for sure.
@Titletown – no complex from me. I get a little frustrated when someone always thinks the world is out to get them and can’t understand a compliment but like I said, life’s too short and I’ve got other things to do. After all, based on our previous performance, I need to be helping the team prepare for BYE. After all, BYE got us so bad we didn’t recover in time for the next game!

@Buford4Life – My kid got into GA Tech aerospace engineering on early admission and is a straight up product of Gwinnett Public Schools and engaged (but not helicopter!) parents. What you get out of school is what you put into it. Parents are engaged at Buford due to the fact the made that choice. The biggest predictor of academic success in parental involvement.

Hey Buford4Laughs . You’re the joke. You don’t understand South GA football and would not be welcome here anyway. Our local “small” town rivalries are far more important to us than your mythical State Championships. The bottom line is that people don’t understand Buford if they’re not from Buford. And it’s quite obvious that a great number of people don’t like Buford at all. I have lived in Buford all of my life, as have my parents, grandparents and the rest of my family. Other people can call us cheaters and recruiters and whatever else, but those people and their opinions do not matter at all. I’ve watched our community come together throughout this last year during some very tragic events and there’s nothing like it. Even if you took football out of the equation, family and community is what Buford is about.

@Buford4life – I made a positive comment about GCPS that happens to oppose your belief and coupled it with at worst a neutral statement and really a more positive statement about Buford and you call me a dumb-ass? Shaking my head on this one. I basically don’t care about Buford as you don’t move in our circles and I just don’t have time to follow you closely. Your arguments tend to lose credibility when you have to resort to personal attacks on people. It is called an ad hominem attack. Look it up. It might help you with your comments.

For those who knock Buford, visit the school sometime. Look how all the schools are set up like a college campus. From class size, to uniform policies to the small town atmosphere and the discipline the school employs. Check out the Fine Arts building . Look at the sports facilities from the 5 astro turf fields for all sports to the weight room that rivals those in D1 programs. Spend a couple days watching the coaching talent from freshman to varsity. Watch how involved those High coaches are in the youth programs from 6 year old and up (doesn’t happen in many schools) , then come back and tell us why you wouldn’t send your child there if you had the opportunity and the means to do it.

@Wolvesfan – I think you miss the point. People basically don’t care about the school, they care about the perception of cherry picking some of best athletes and then claiming not to have an advantage. I asked about the numbers and percentages of athletes from outside the city limits and got attacked. It would be interesting to see how much the City budgets per student in the high school and if it is more than the $2K tuition charged. I know Buford doesn’t offer scholarships like some of the privates but if they are subsidizing students is there a difference?

Fred, I don’t think anyone in Buford thinks we don’t have an advantage. We know we do because we have an enrollment similar to the private schools we used to compete with in AA. We don’t recruit, parents want to send their kids here. I am a Buford citizen; I know more non-athletes paying tuition than athletes.
CKelly is right. Unless you have been a part of Buford, you just don’t understand how loyal and close these people are to one another. We have been in the NG and the MC cluster and nothing even comes close to Buford.

It is my understanding that this player played the last two plays of both blowouts. A total of 4 plays.
An Alabama coach and an Ohio State coach both told me Buford has many kids applying to go to the school. It is really the best school in the area and has a uniform code as well as great athletic programs
We moved from Southlake TX where they were 5A state champs 4-5 in a row. They were busted bringing in a QB from Oklahoma. It is hard to get away with it when parents want their kids to play not an import. So trust me their is none going on there other than parents and kids wanting to go to a great school
