Buford forfeits two football wins for using ineligible player

Buford forfeited victories over Banks County and West Hall on Monday for the use of an ineligible player, the GHSA announced.

The player, who was not named, did not have the required units of credit to be eligible academically. Buford reported the incident to the GHSA.

The player participated only in two plays in each game, one a 63-0 victory over Banks County on Sept. 28, the other a 61-0 victory over West Hall on Oct. 10.

Buford’s record falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAA. The forfeits put North Hall (6-1, 4-0) in the lead in 7-AAA and put five teams with 2-2 records: Buford, Dawson County, White County, Banks County and West Hall.

If North Hall loses no more than one game, North Hall will win the region. Buford has won region titles 10 of the past 11 seasons, failing only in 2009, when the Wolves still won a Class AA state title.

In a press released issued Monday afternoon, Buford stated that its athletics department discovered last week that the player’s name had been inadvertently left off a required GHSA eligibility form.

”Upon checking student records, it was determined that the football player did pass the required classes last semester; however, was not on track for graduation and did not have the total number of Carnegie units required to be eligible for athletic participation,” the press release stated.

The forfeits now represent 25 percent of the games lost by Buford since Jess Simpson became coach in 2005. Simpson’s record, formerly 102-6, is now 100-8.

I keep saying that Camden fans have a complex, I think it is residual from being a Region 3 bully for so long. The funny thing is that I think the Grayson fans are second on this list!!

@ Fred…

My friend you might as well give it a rest with camden74. That guy is the biggest egotistical know it all on these blogs. The guy lives for these blogs. It’s like him and a few others have no job, friends, family, or life. They are always on here. Sad thing is beside region 1 6A he is probably clueless about Ga high school football.

@All the folks that are claiming that great players want to come to Buford for recruiting…I call BS. If you are a great talent and can play ANY sport, and you stand out in your sport, and you have a very supportive coach(es), you will be recruited. Period. So don’t use that excuse as to why Buford gets the players they “attract”.

Camden74, Fred:

I used Camden as an example because i was responding to Camden74’s “where is Wolfie” comment . There was nothing backhanded intended. I have some friends that live in the Camden district so i have been keeping up with them for several years and have always been impressed. I love the way Camden represents Georgia against out of state teams and they are certainly among the best in the state every year. Buford is another of Georgia’s elite teams year in and year out.

@ interesting – No match brother! Too old for that stuff.

@grayram & @That Dude Says… – I’m over it. You try to give the man a compliment and he can’t accept it, well that’s his problem. Won’t be hearing it from me again this year for sure.

@Titletown – no complex from me. I get a little frustrated when someone always thinks the world is out to get them and can’t understand a compliment but like I said, life’s too short and I’ve got other things to do. After all, based on our previous performance, I need to be helping the team prepare for BYE. After all, BYE got us so bad we didn’t recover in time for the next game! :-D

Would love to see that Peach County vs Buford game. Great to see that the coach up there empty the bench and the kid plays 4 downs in 2 games. Wish more coaches did that !

Buford School Systems have some of the best facilities in the state. Number one in the state in academics, the arts, and all sports. “So when you come at the king, you best not miss!’

People shouldn’t get mad that Gwinnett County parents are paying to send their children to the Buford School Systems, to get a better education and opportunities. Just look at how well Gwinnett County has been ran lately……. Can you blame them?

@Buford4Life – My kid got into GA Tech aerospace engineering on early admission and is a straight up product of Gwinnett Public Schools and engaged (but not helicopter!) parents. What you get out of school is what you put into it. Parents are engaged at Buford due to the fact the made that choice. The biggest predictor of academic success in parental involvement.

I believe the reason Buford confessed about the illegal player is because of the Milton scandal ….to appease the GHSA the powers that be……so that it will take the microscope off of them…..truth be known they violate many rules of engagement……..IMO

Why won’t anyone that has these “truths”, “facts” and “evidence” share them and why not report them to the GHSA …….. ?? I’m Interested lol

Hey Buford4Laughs . You’re the joke. You don’t understand South GA football and would not be welcome here anyway. Our local “small” town rivalries are far more important to us than your mythical State Championships. Many of your titles were over communities(even counties) with populations of less than 10 thousand people. Do you reckon Buford has an advantage there!

Hey Alex must be nice to sit behind some screen name and feel like a big man and take stabs at folks. These blogs just show how classless some of you folks are along with the AJC. Alex must be someone that couldn’t make the cut at Buford. Next time you want to call my family out along with others just man up and do it in person big guy, just don’t do it at 12:05 a.m. I will be in bed from a hard day at work.

The bottom line is that people don’t understand Buford if they’re not from Buford. And it’s quite obvious that a great number of people don’t like Buford at all. I have lived in Buford all of my life, as have my parents, grandparents and the rest of my family. Other people can call us cheaters and recruiters and whatever else, but those people and their opinions do not matter at all. I’ve watched our community come together throughout this last year during some very tragic events and there’s nothing like it. Even if you took football out of the equation, family and community is what Buford is about.

@Buford4life – I made a positive comment about GCPS that happens to oppose your belief and coupled it with at worst a neutral statement and really a more positive statement about Buford and you call me a dumb-ass? Shaking my head on this one. I basically don’t care about Buford as you don’t move in our circles and I just don’t have time to follow you closely. Your arguments tend to lose credibility when you have to resort to personal attacks on people. It is called an ad hominem attack. Look it up. It might help you with your comments.

For those who knock Buford, visit the school sometime. Look how all the schools are set up like a college campus. From class size, to uniform policies to the small town atmosphere and the discipline the school employs. Check out the Fine Arts building . Look at the sports facilities from the 5 astro turf fields for all sports to the weight room that rivals those in D1 programs. Spend a couple days watching the coaching talent from freshman to varsity. Watch how involved those High coaches are in the youth programs from 6 year old and up (doesn’t happen in many schools) , then come back and tell us why you wouldn’t send your child there if you had the opportunity and the means to do it.

Fred

@Wolvesfan – I think you miss the point. People basically don’t care about the school, they care about the perception of cherry picking some of best athletes and then claiming not to have an advantage. I asked about the numbers and percentages of athletes from outside the city limits and got attacked. It would be interesting to see how much the City budgets per student in the high school and if it is more than the $2K tuition charged. I know Buford doesn’t offer scholarships like some of the privates but if they are subsidizing students is there a difference?

Rizzo

Fred, I don’t think anyone in Buford thinks we don’t have an advantage. We know we do because we have an enrollment similar to the private schools we used to compete with in AA. We don’t recruit, parents want to send their kids here. I am a Buford citizen; I know more non-athletes paying tuition than athletes.

CKelly is right. Unless you have been a part of Buford, you just don’t understand how loyal and close these people are to one another. We have been in the NG and the MC cluster and nothing even comes close to Buford.

It is my understanding that this player played the last two plays of both blowouts. A total of 4 plays.

An Alabama coach and an Ohio State coach both told me Buford has many kids applying to go to the school. It is really the best school in the area and has a uniform code as well as great athletic programs
We moved from Southlake TX where they were 5A state champs 4-5 in a row. They were busted bringing in a QB from Oklahoma. It is hard to get away with it when parents want their kids to play not an import. So trust me their is none going on there other than parents and kids wanting to go to a great school
