2011 struggles paying dividends for Westside-Macon

Region 2-AAAA doesn’t have Peach County, owing to the way the reclassification fell in this two-year cycle. So there’s that. One less juggernaut for the region to deal with.

That doesn’t mean that the teams in 2-AAAA aren’t being tested, including front-runners Westside-Macon and Baldwin, who face off this week.

“We actually have been tested,” said Westside coach Sheddrick Risper, whose team’s only loss was to Class AAAAA Northside-Warner Robins.

Risper points out that against both Mary Persons and West Laurens, his team needed late scores to win with breathing room.

Flip the equation around, and it’s Westside’s opponents who have been tested. In Risper’s spread no-huddle offense, the Seminoles are averaging 40 points per game.

“We try to run a play every 15 seconds,” said Risper. “We want to run a whole bunch of plays and score points while we’re doing it.” Through six games, with quarterback Noah Grayer spreading the wealth, Westside has already scored as many points as it did in 10 games in 2011, when the Seminoles went 5-5.

Grayer has passed for nearly 1,200 yards and wideout Shannon Smith has accounted for almost 500 of those.

“We’ve got a lot of returners from last year,” Risper said. “This group has been with me since I was a the middle school. They took their bumps and bruises last year, and they’ve gotten a lot better.”

The defense has also improved. They’ve allowed 105 points, 42 of which came against Northside.

Most fun playoff races: Try 4-AAAA and 6-AAAA. In 4-AAAA, there are six teams with five overall each, three in each subdivision. Among those are No. 8 Stockbridge, No. 9 Griffin and No. 10 Jonesboro. 6-AAAA has unbeaten Chamblee and unbeaten Carver-Atlanta, neither of whom is ranked.

Perhaps meaningless yet still interesting fact: No team in AAAA is allowing fewer than 10 points per game. No. 1-ranked Sandy Creek was before last week, but Shaw and quarterback Chandler Whittlesey scored 26 last week and gave the Patriots a second-half scare, pushing the Sandy Creek points-against average to 11 perg game.
