One down, one to go for Stephenson

Stephenson landed the first blow in the three-way race to the Region 6-AAAAA championship on Friday, knocking off 2011 state champion Tucker 13-6 and bringing the Tigers’ 20-game winning streak to a halt.

The fourth-ranked Jaguars (5-0, 5-0) can all but wrap up the region title with a victory on Oct. 26 against No. 3 M.L. King. However, Stephenson also has games remaining against playoff contenders Miller Grove and Mays, so it can’t afford to celebrate too long or look too far ahead.

No. 2 Tucker (5-1, 4-1) came into the game with the top offense in Class AAAAA, averaging 47.8 points per game, but did not get on the scoreboard against Stephenson until a fourth-quarter touchdown pass after Stephenson led 13-0. “To shut Tucker out for three and a half quarters is amazing,” Stephenson coach Ron Gartrell told the AJC’s Jeff Haws.

The Tigers must beat M.L. King on Nov. 2 and hope for a couple of Stephenson losses to have a shot at an outright region title, but a victory over M.L. King could pave the way for a three-way tie at the top.

Is Tucker out of it, or can the Tigers recover in time to beat M.L. King?

Here are some of the things we learned from Week 8 in Class AAAAA:

*All of a sudden, Mundy’s Mill is a playoff threat: The Tigers were 0-4 when they began subregion play last weekend, but they find themselves 2-0 and tied with Union Grove for first place in Region 4-AAAAA Division A after a 32-31 upset of Drew. Junior running back Rodney Smith rushed for 286 yards and four touchdowns (on runs of 56, 54, 29 and 26 yards) in the victory, according to the Clayton News Daily. Mundy’s Mill and Union Grove will play on Oct. 26 in a game that could decide the subregion title, which would bring with it a trip to the region championship game and an automatic berth in the state playoffs. Mundy’s Mill made its most recent playoff appearance in 2007 and went 7-33 over the next four seasons.

*It wasn’t a bad night to be an underdog: Stephenson and Mundy’s Mill weren’t the only teams to pull off upsets. Perhaps no game was more of a surprise than Harris County’s 21-17 victory over Bainbridge. Harris County improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 1-AAAAA. Bainbridge, projected by some as the second-best team in the region behind Thomas County Central, fell into last place at 3-3, 0-2. … Richmond Hill was the only team in 3-AAAAA that was undefeated overall until it ran into Rick Tomberlin’s Effingham County team, which won its fourth consecutive game and is tied with Ware County for the region lead.

*Having a good offense wasn’t bad, either: Five AAAAA teams won on Friday despite giving up at least 30 points. The most notable was Rome, which beat North Paulding 57-56 in overtime in a 5-AAAAA game. Region leader East Paulding had an easier time in a 56-30 victory over Hiram. Other winners were Lakeside-Evans (37-35 over Houston County), Creekview (56-42 over Northview) and Mundy’s Mill.

Enter your comments here@ stephensonfinest531, I was at the game, got their early tailgated , and I sat on the Tucker side and heard them as they was so over confident but after that second touchdown, a silence covered that side. I couldn’t help myself from celebrating after Stephenson won both games the football game 13-6 and the band show… Where are you guys at, even AJC went with Tucker!! Where are “WE TUCKER TIGERS 20-0 WITH STEPHENSON BEING #21, WHERE YOU AT??? :)

I’m right here JAB, show a little class. Not once have you ever seen a Tucker poster say “I told you so”. We both had a 50/50 chance of being right. Tucker played about as bad as we could and still had a chance to tie the game before the fumble. We have been down this road before, we can still recover and make a run. Only thing I can hope is that Stephenson continues to win, that way we can meet in the Dome.

Count me as one who predicted a Stephenson win too. Nothing against Tucker but Stephenson isn’t the school that stepped up in competition is year, Ticker has more to prove on the 5A level before we could assume they would continue to dominate the way they have over the last several years. Nice win for Coach Gartrell…..hope this is his year to finally win it all.

Good game Stephenson. I wouldn’t count the Tigers out yet. Sometimes it takes a loss to re-group and come back even stronger. Stay tuned and hope we meet again in the future.

Saying my team is going to win is part of it. Saying ” I TOLD YOU SO” is different. I have been on these blogs for 4 years and those words have never been type from me directed at another team. You congradulate your team for the win and the other team for putting up good effort.

I am outsider with no dog in this fight. Tucker has MADE RESPECT from everybody in this State because they always play hard and have won TWO State Titles. Stephenson is a JOKE. Teams from outside of Dekalb County do not respect Stephenson. They are Paper Champs each year. The fold like a lawn chair each year in the playoffs.

Good win by Stephenson. Not to make this excuse for Tucker but they were missing 2 of their top 3 rushers in this game. 1 is the most explosive offensive player on the team in Yusif Minor. We hope we get those 2 back because we gonna need them.

I was at the game last night. Tucker seemed to play conservative till late in 4th qt, seems to me if they had opened it up sooner with the quarterback more involved they would have had more of a chance to win.

Okay Tiger4Life, Stephenson just erased your quote: “WE TUCKER TIGERS 20-0 WITH STEPHENSON BEING #21; it should now read; “We are Tucker tigers who met our match & ended our win streak to that Dekalb County powerhouse, “STEPHENSON JAGUARS”, who is now the best with that big ole “S” on their chest…

JAB

@KeithMLKfan, what do you mean that Tucker was playing conservative& 50?50, Tucker is primarily a run run offensive team, if you was truly at the game you could see that Stephenson defense shut them down, Stephenson played a heck of a defensive game last night and force them to throw the ball, they were averaging over 400 yards. a game before last night. And the completion that Tucker did make was a scramble out of the pocket pass, the touchdown that he threw while being chased by Stephenson defenders was a heck of a catch that was about to hit the ground. STOP COMING UP WITH EXCUSES…

@WhatAJoke – Dude Stephenson proved they are the better team of the two. Give credit were its due. Yeah Tucker won a state title but they NEVER had to play Stephenson to get there. Tucker played W.E.A.K teams all last year on there road to the dome. For crying out loud Tucker played LOVEJOY for state title!!! Tucker is a good program but they are OVERRATED!!!!!

It took tucker almost 100 years to win a state title! Stephenson is like 15 years old, and MLK is like 10….they will win a title and it wont take them almost 100 years to do it…

Stephenson could have EASILY shut tucker out but they were playing conservative. And the funny thing is this stephenson team is a “weaker” stephenson team from past years teams, most of them are underclassmen!

And please stop talking about who was out because stephenson also had starters out. This is a team sport. One person wouldnt have stopped Stephensons defensive DOMINATION this entire game.

Really though Underdog? There was alot of you all including the AJC giving Props to Tucker without even giving Stephenson a chance. All of Tucker bloggers talked about there winning streak & Back to Back State Titles & I am not taking anything away from what Tucker has accomplished, but if this a sign of what could be for 5-A, then I would say Stephenson 1 Tucker 0. New region, new attitude, new scheduling. For what it’s worth Speed does kills, but undiscipline takes you out. I am looking forward to new team rivals such as Tucker, SWD, Dunwoody, Miller grove in the region. I think region 6-AAAAA will be well represented in the state playoffs this year. No matter what side MLK, Tucker, Stephenson, & take your pick for the fourth seed, it could very well be an all deKalb county Semis & Championship game. You heard it first from me. Tucker is still ha great program, now it believe the hype is out of the way I think Tucker will be more humble as well as the Great Tucker following will be also.

Great win by Stephenson on Friday night.

Good hard nose Dekalb County Football full of speed and DEFENSE by both schools. Remember, Stephenson only scored 13 points!!

Both coaches made good adjustments. Great bands by both schools, a packed house from supporters in both communities. It was an awesome night except that we didn’t pull THIS ONE out!

Pray the best for Stephenson to have a great year and we’ll meet you at the DOME for an all Dekalb County AAAAA State Championship game!

@uncleJunior

I caught Miller Grove game Thursday against Lakeside and granted Lakeside wasnt much competition, but Miller Grove looked impressive. Still trying to figure out how Mays beat them so bad. Miller Grove has lots of speed (the Big 3 do too though), they key for them will be executing that explosive passing game of theirs. I think they have a outside shot at pulling an upset against 1 of the big 3, if that teams come out flat, but dont really see them in the region championship talk. Their biggest game will be SWD for sure.

As far as the Big 3, Stephenson is in the driver’s seat for sure. Tucker relies mostly on the run and the Jaguars really kept them from gashing them for a lot of big runs. I wouldnt be suprised if it ended in a 3 way tie for first. Who has the tiebreaker if it ends that way?

@unclejunior. Miller Grove has a shot at final playoff spot but they have only played one good team Mays and they got totally dominated. I was there and Miller Grove appeared to be biggger more athletuc but the game was never in doubt. Hopefully Miller Grove has worked things out and can compete better.

In response to Cannon. After North Paulding took 50-42 lead with 18 seconds left, Rome ran kickoff back to North Paulding 32. The clock showed 6.2 seconds left but officials determined they had started the clock too early on the return. Clock was reset to 10.3 seconds. Rome’s first play went to the 13 out of bounds. There were 4 seconds left. Bo Tucker, the Rome quarterback, dropped back to pass on final play but pulled ball down and ran/dove into the end zone with no time left. Game tied 50-50. North Paulding scored in overtime but Rome blocked the extra point. Rome then scored and made the extra point for 57-56 win. The game had everything.

@JAB, that was not to take anything away from SHS defense, just an observation,if running the ball up the middle was Tuckers strength then y’all did shut them down.Couldn’t help but wonder why Stephensons coaches went for two, that made it very hairy at the end…Any thoughts ?

@ John…

Thanks…I had talked with folks who were there and they said the same, that it was crazy!!! I actually thought NORTH would beat ROME but it wasn’t meant to be! NORTH is still in great shape to have a playoff game as the #4 seed as HIRAM still has to play SOUTH PAULDING & ALLATOONA and realistically can’t catch NORTH.

EAST host ROME this week in “THE BONEYARD” the “D” hopefully learned a lesson at HIRAM last week and cannot afford to give ROME the same opportunities it gave HIRAM. On a positive note when the offense plays 4 quarters you can see the kind of numbers it is capable of putting up.

Anybody that watch high school ball knows that Tucker that played Stephenson on Friday and lost is not the same Tucker that coach Stephens coached for those powerhouse years! I mean ….Lets get real….Tucker didnt play nobody….are you serious? #1—they played who they were supposed to play and where they were supposed to play them ….in 4AAAA. #2–they also beat powerhouse Northside WARNER ROBBINS on their way to ANOTHER championship The team that lost by only a slim margin last week are only left over players from the coach STEPHENS stint…..had he been there…..the story would have been different #3–How in the world can STEPHENSON brag about winning a game against a newcomer to 5AAAAA…..just get by….and have the nerve to talk smack about it….HOW? Do me a favor trash-mouth fans first….WIN A PLAY-OFF GAME….JUST ONE…THEN and only THEN…come see me! You have not won a play-off game since God knows when ….then have the galls to brag! Go do your homework or something else useful!

All Right JAB – I’m here, had some personal things going on this weekend to keep me for posting. Congratulation to The Jaguars of Stephenson, for their 13-6 victory of the Tigers of Tucker. The Jags played (Coached) a good game against one of 5A elites. Also, it wasn’t Tiger4Life, who posted the line about Stephenson being victim #21 it was myself and it looked good going into last Friday’s game. (LOL) Oh well, you Win some and you Lose some. Most 5A fans know this region was going to be tough when GHSA announced the players and the likely hood of going 10-0 is a tall order, but Stephenson has cleared one hurdle toward that great feat. A lot of GOOD football left to be played by whoever is crown 5A Region 6 champion. Good Win JARGUAR NATION!!!!

@Really bro? – Yep Tucker maybe OVERRATED, in your opinion, but Stephenson has UNDERACHRIEVED, IMO. Maybe Friday Oct 12th 2012 can change my prospective. Dude, 13-6 isn’t like the woodshed was open for business.

The talk about Miller Grove – Yes, they are currently in the picture for a playoff spot, but I don’t see them haven’t enough to overcome the BIG 3 and SWD. Seen the Wolverines a couple of times, Good passing attack, below average running game, and a below average defense, and NO kicking game, all spells trouble for the Wolverines. But I could be surprised by MG, I was surprised Oct 12th @ Hallford. Again, talk like this, at this time of the year, puts the claim on “why Region 6 is the BEST”….No other region in 5A is talking about 6 teams with playoff future.

“WE ARE TUCKER” – Still a BIG force in 5A

REGION 6, the best in GA 2012 5A Football……

I look forward to the playoffs and where each team will be seeded. I believe Tucker & Stephenson will meet up again in the playoffs.
