For the AJC
Tucker came into Friday night averaging 48 points per game.
Stephenson was not impressed.
The Class AAAAA No. 4 Jaguars neutralized No. 2 Tucker’s vaunted speed and put together two long touchdown drives to secure a 13-6 win at Hallford Stadium. It was Tucker’s first loss since the 2010 state semifinal against Starr’s Mill.
This was a game played mostly on the ground between two teams that like to throw numerous backs at the defense, but two passing plays may have been the biggest ones of the game.
The first came on third-and-9 for Stephenson (5-0, 5-0 in Region 6-AAAAA), from its own 49-yard line. Leading by just a touchdown, the Jaguars were on the verge of giving the ball back after a Tucker punt.
But quarterback Justin Holman had spotted a vulnerability in the middle of the Tucker defense, and he was ready to make a play.
“They were going man all game,” Holman said. “So we just talked it over as an offense, and I told my coaches we could take advantage of it. And we did.”
They did so by Holman hitting Dexter Neal on a slant pattern that went for 33 yards and a first down at the Tucker 18-yard line.
Three plays later came another third down, and Holman was up to the task again.
This time from the 15, Holman rolled left against the Tucker pass rush, squared his shoulders and found Taylor Henry wide open in the end zone to put the Jaguars up 13-0.
It’s one more time the Jaguars noticed a weakness and exploited it for a big play.
“We thought we got them on the corner,” Stephenson coach Ron Gartrell said. “They got him outside, and we’d have somebody open. They only had one guy covering him. They jumped the short guy, so we had him there.”
The Tigers (5-1, 4-1) did get themselves back into the game, though, and had their shots.
They finally scored on an 81-yard fourth-quarter drive, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown shovel pass on the run from Juwaan Williams to Dallas Rivers, pulling them back to within a score.
After a Stephenson three-and-out, Tucker had the ball with less than 3 minutes left, near midfield.
On the first play, Rivers ran through some tackles and was fighting for more yardage at the Stephenson 35-yard line when he fumbled. The Jaguars recovered and didn’t surrender the ball again until there were 17 seconds left, leaving Tucker with too little time to score again.
In the end, it was the defense that carried Stephenson to this win, holding an explosive Tigers team to just 6 points and fewer than 175 rushing yards.
“To shut Tucker out for three and a half quarters is amazing,” Gartrell said. “We knew we had a good defense; our coaches were well prepared, and we did a good job. We had two weeks to get ready; I think that really helped us.”
T 0 0 0 6 – 6
S 0 7 6 0 – 13
S – Austin Tevin 5 run (Wisdom Nzidee kick)
S – Taylor Henry 15 pass from Justin Holman (run failed)
T – Dallas Rivers 21 pass from Juwaan Williams (kick blocked)

Where are all those Tucker bloggers? It seems that all were busy writing long memos in preparation for a Tucker win..You can tear them up or place Stephenson’s name where you had Tucker’s. Now you will hear how this is a young team and most of the player are underclassmen and how they have always respected Stephenson– and to go back and look at their blogs–Bull! .

Congrats JAB, Stephenson finest and Stephenson fans, the hype and buildup was amazing and the game was great. So much speed on both teams, and one player would not have made a difference so Tucker fans quit making excuses and give SHS props.

I’m making this post before I read any comments, so I will keep a level head.
Congrats to Stephenson. They play a good enough to win. Hats off.
Now, Tucker didn’t play it’s best football last night. We had way to many mental penalties. The two biggest that cost us the “running into the punter” and “holding” on the first qrt. 40 yard run.
On to the next game, we are now getting ready for SWD

We all know Tucker’s QB threw the touch down pass after he ran pass the line of scrimmage. The refs did not call this and this is the only reason Tucker got 6 points on the board.

@Jab & stephensonsfinest and the rest, Sorry I’m late to the party but it took a long time for my balloon to land after it burst!
Nothing to say but great game played by the Stephenson Jags and I was impressed with the discipline they showed all night. I take nothing away from them and their victory, they earned it.
It’s one thing to get on here and talk about what you think your team will do to other teams and then go on the field and back it up, but last night we did not do many things to help our case. I agree with @Tiger4Life that we made way too many mental mistakes and just didn’t play our brand of football. When you run the wing T you can not keep putting yourself in 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations and expect to win the game. We have some issues that need to be addressed before we can say that we are playing the brand of ball that we were used to.
The good news is that we played about as bad as we’ve ever played and we still only lost by 7 points, the bad news is we picked the wrong time to have a bad game. Clearly these issues are addressable and we will see Stephenson down the road again.
Yes, let me quote history once more… back in 2008 we lost to a very strong Marist team in regular season and came back to beat them for the state title. Don’t ever count us out.
Now I must go because we have a lot of CROW to cook and I have to decide how to prepare it! Barbecue it, stew it, bake it, sear it, boil it, fry it, put it in gravy, filet it, skew it………… that’s about all.

And Yes, #2 Minor makes a” BIG” difference. On those speed sweeps that picked big gains, he scores everytime and I mean everytime he runs that play. The kid runs a legit 4.2 and once he hit the corner it’s lights out !!! I’m not saying we would have won if he had played, but one can only think it would have made a differance.

Sloppy game by both teams and the refs. 1. The first two plays by both teams set the tone on what type of night it was going to be. The refs were not in the position to call those penalties and probably should not get the opportunity to call any more games of this magnitude. 2. Same OLD Stephenson coaching staff not putting away opponents. Have they not learned anything during their careers about single digit leads, I mean up 7 and go 3 and out in one of the most pivotal drives in the game. Just, think Tucker first play from scrimmage was a 16 yard run with a questionable fumble (again refs not in the correct position to make the call). You could see the way Tucker quarterback was running through their defense that they were tired. Nevertheless good victory for the Jag!!!! Just hope this was not your State Title Game because there are a couple of weeks left before that game will be played

Oh yeah and on that Tucker touchdown the quarterback was clearly over the line of scrimmage (officals not in the correct position to make the call). One last note I have seen both teams play and noticed alot of guys not on the field. I heard about the offensive linemen for the Jags but what about the other Nose guard for Tucker, What is his status

You guys are sadly mistaken… I can guarantee you that MLK will beat both Tucker and Stephenson. If you think Tucker was clueless against Stephenson when they went to the spread, imagine how they will be vs. MLK, a team who does it about as well as any team I’ve ever seen. Their OC is very good at adjusting and calling plays at the right time… Tucker defense was completely lost at times And Stephenson knows how it is… they gave up over 300 yards passing and 6tds last year and oh, oes the name Blake Tibbs ring a bell? Well they have another kid just like him who just lit Dunwoody up for 150 yards and 2tds… and they got a secret weapon in the backfield now too… its gonna be some good football these next few weeks and as we all know, the LION is the king of the jungle….

Tucker missing a Starter and Stephenson missing a Starter. Tucker had a run call back because of penalty. Stephenson had a Touchdown call back because of penalty. One man dont start no show. Its a team effort. So quit making excuses about why you lost. High power offense shut down by a strong defense that plays good against the run. Both team are suspect against the pass, because you saw it against Arabian Mountain. So neither team exploited each defense, when you know both teams are strong against the run. Speed dont win games. Who cares that Yusef run a 4.2, but he needs to get his personal life together and dont waste that talent that God gave him. I told you Defense wins football games not speed. You can’t out run a fundamentally sound Defense.

@Tuckertown, well said. I want to say s this. It is my firm belief that a lot of these bloggers have a perspective that does not serve the best interest of the players. Winning a state title is an awesome achievement, but it us not the only measure of a program. While it is the ultimate team success at this level, just because a program doesn’t have a state title, that does not diminish the caliber of a program. As a parent and a community supporter, the most important thing to me is that this kids have the opportunity to continue playing the game and getting an education at the next level. To say only schools with championships are quality programs and those without are not, is discounting the effort of all the schools that fall short of a title. Tucker has been a great program for quite sometime, but have only recently won a title. That does not diminish the greatness of their program prior to the titles. Stephenson has 5 players playing in the NFL, 3 from the same graduating class. That is not a true measure of success either, but the fact that so many players from these programs have opportunities to play in college and earned degrees is a great accomplishment.

When its all over at the end Tucker will be playing football long after Stephenson loses in the playoff asl always. They are not a great coach team and never have been. They will lose 2 games this year and then all they will be saying we beat Tucker. As I see it they were 5a last year and realized they were playing over their head and didn’t want to go th 6AAAAAA and keep losing. See Tucker and MLK in the playoff and win then you can talk. It looks like this win was more for Stephenson than Tucker so they can say they can play with the Big Boys. Stephenson has talent but the fans have said for years and years that they are poor coached and it showed last night because Tucker almost pulled it out in the end. The referee took to much from the game also. They hurt both teams. You will see Tucker Nation again.

The Jags & Tigers was a Great game but MLK & Miller Grove, SWD still has to play the meat of there schedules. Mays is still there and can be in a very good spot for the playoffs in this region they had MLK until the las few minutes of their game no one else has scored on MLK like they have and they had the tougher region schedule thus far.The Dekalb teams have to continue to knock each other off for this region to start sorting out. The word is MLK will beat everyone and win the region we will see.

Congratulations to Stephenson. Good game.
You were the better team on Friday night. Lets stop right there though as you can attest to all of the previous years where great regular seasons end early due to playoff melt downs.
Appears Stephenson has difficulty with prosperity in games!
Thought we were poised to pull another NSWR come from behind victory out of the hat!!
Fumble late in the fourth quarter ended that possibility but we STILL almost broke the screen pass at the end.

Step back everyone and think about this…we’re talking 3 GREAT teams (Stephenson, Tucker, & ML King) all within a few miles of each other being undeniably argued as the top squads in the classification 5A. Not to be wishy-washy, but I want one of these to go all the way and win the state championship. I’m partial to Stephenson finally doing it, only because my home is within Jaguar territory, but I’ve gone to watch all of these teams play…including both Tucker State Championship games. I know NSWR is laying low, flying beneath the radar, not being vocal on this blog (ENR is inexplicably quiet this year), but the state champion will come from Dekalb County again.

@K-Man- Yes stephenson has fallen short in the playoffs, but they lost to the most DOMINATE teams in the southeast (lowndes etc.) but never lost by more then a td. Tucker has prospered in the playoffs but take a look at the teams they played!!! That has a lot to do with it. I said it before and I will say it again….they played LOVEJOY for a STATE TITLE!!!! Tucker has never played with the big boys which is why FOR YEARS they have looked better then they actually are.
If you have a average team playing mediocre AT BEST teams, 9 times out of 10 that average team will come out on top, and look really good doing it.
A good Tucker team played one of the worst stephenson teams in years and they still lost. In fact the score couldve been WORSE but Stephenson played conservative doing just enough to win. The game was not as close as the score makes it seem. Tuckers offense was completley SHUT DOWN by Stephenson D. In fact tuckers only TD shouldve been called back because the QB was over the line. Go look at the highlights. Everyone in the stadium saw it.
Stephenson sends more kids to college. Not only that Stephenson is only like 15 years old yet they have the MOST players in the NFL in the entire state of GA. One of Stephensons players played in the Superbowl last year.
And lastly TUCKER opened in 1918 you guys didn’t get a state championship until 2008! That’s 80 years!!!!! It took tucker 80 years to win 1 state title!
Stephenson is like 15 years old and MLK is like 10…it won’t take them 80 years to win a title

You can check they blog history from last year, I went in on anyone that had something to say about any Dekalb team and I will still defend them from outsiders! I love the opportunities that the majority of your players get to further their football and education, it’s not only great for them but also the community.
Btw, I been over the loss, I’m not a sore loser. So until we meet again we cool! But guys like Really Bro make it hard to be nice to all Stephenson supporters.
@really bro
If you think 9 new starters on defense and 8 on offense is a good Tucker team, thank you. Secondly, if you win the the title this year, then what ? It means nothing because its not in the highest classification? So why play down? And if you lose in the early rounds then what?
Tucker didn’t start playing football until 1950!!! Also we have a 3 time Super Bowl champ. Patrick Pass!

Then he doesnt open up his play book until he is desperate. #2 was suspended for violation of team rules so he didnt deserve to play. SHS did surpise me with their toughness and Kudos to them. @Really Bro? – I have to start by saying that your name is befitting. Really Brother?
Is that the story you’re going to stick with?
Stephenson deserves better than to have fans like you to disgrace them with such poor comments.
Perhaps some of the better Stephenson teams that you reference needed to play more like the Stephenson team that played on Friday night and you might have a championship or two to add to your brag list.
From what I saw on Friday, this may not be your most talented team but this is a solid TEAM that plays extremely hard.
I agree Tucker struggled on offense. Some of that was due to a solid Stephenson defense. Some of the struggle was also due to having to adjust offensively to playing without important components in just a few days time!
Not an excuse because this is football and you have to be able to adjust.
Injuries, and in this case suspensions, happen and the world moves on!
We all applaud Stephenson for the number of children they send to college, and we will applaud you WHEN and IF you win your FIRST State Championship!!
Until that time, your comments will continue to read as foolish as you must be by your attempts to prop up Stephenson’s accomplishments (and you don’t really need to I must add because as you referenced you’ve done some great things) by tearing down Tucker winning State Championships!
Everyone compares themselves to a Champion so while I understand that human psychology, it infuriates me to take the steps you’re taking which is to also try to tear down the accomplishments of the Champion to somehow make you look better. It doesn’t work.
Because at the end of the day this is the reality:
Stephenson won ONE game against Tucker on Friday.
Stephenson has fielded some great teams.
Stephenson sends numerous children to college on football scholarships.
Stephenson has a history of losing early in the playoffs.
Tucker has a storied football legacy and tradition that includes TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
Muhammad Ali said it best, “Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision.”
This not so good Stephenson team from Friday that beat our beloved Tucker Tigers by a mere six points displayed a Champion type of toughness that I didn’t think I’d ever see a Stephenson team display!!
But then, that’s what it takes to beat a CHAMPION and Tucker should know because we have TWO STATE TITLES!!!!
WE ARE TUCKER!!!!!!!
