Norcross 35, Collins Hill 23

By Robert Haddocks

For the AJC

The first time he touched the ball, Norcross’ Alvin Kamara raced 80 yards for a touchdown. It was going to be that kind of night for the senior running back.

Kamara ran for 295 yards and three touchdowns to pace Norcross in a 35-23 victory against Collins Hill. The Blue Devils gouged the Eagles for 347 yards rushing, and the defense, led by Lorenzo Carter, made plays when it had to. The Blue Devils remained unbeaten at 7-0, 5-0 in Region 7-AAAAAA. Collins Hill, which was riding a four-game winning streak, dropped to 4-2, 3-1.

Norcross, which scored 104 points in its two previous games, simply had too much firepower for the Eagles. With Kamara and equally dangerous Myles Autry lined up all over the field, defenses struggle to contend with the Blue Devils’ spread offense. Norcross finished with more than 430 yards of total offense for the second consecutive week.

Despite falling behind 14-0 four minutes into the game, the Eagles kept within striking distance most of the game. Daniel Fish scored on a 1-yard touchdown and Mitchell Blanchard kicked a 39-yard field goal to cut the Norcross lead to 21-16 late in the second quarter. But Autry then took a beautifully set up bubble screen, dodged a defender and took off for a 49-yard touchdown to give the Blue Devils a 28-16 lead, which they took into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Kamara, who also scored three touchdowns last week, got his final touchdown of the night on a 30-yard run to give the Blue Devils a 35-16 lead with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter.

Collins Hill closed the gap to 35-23 on a 6-yard pass from Brett Sheehan to Julian Williams. Sheehan completed 15 of 27 passes for 195 yards. Tyler Henderson played an inspired game, leading the Eagles with 70 yards rushing and 82 yards receiving.

Kamara got off to a blazing start. The standout senior, who has narrowed his college choices to Georgia and Alabama, followed his 80-yard run with a 61-yard touchdown on the Blue Devils’ second drive. He finished the first quarter with 168 yards.

Norcross also had a 99-yard kickoff return by JaQuan Williams, which gave it a 21-7 lead late in the first quarter. Carter, a rangy defensive end, was all over the field and finished with three sacks.

Kamara and the O-line played well. Our defense was put in bad spots all night. I believe every one of Collins Hill drives in the first half started at midfield or further in.

Norcross is a State Contender…write it down.

The Cross,

I’d love to see our Devils make the championship game, but have you checked out their path to the state championship game? Their second round game is against Region 8 #2, which right now is Grayson. Third round ia against Region 1 #1, which is Camden. If they can get through that gauntlet, they’ll probably play an “easier” semi-final versus McEachern. If they can do that, they’ll deserve to win the championship!

I know…it’s going to be a meat grinder, but if we play our game we can compete with anyone. If we make it through that bracket we should be crowned National Campions!!!
