Tucker vs. Stephenson: It’s time to get down to business

One of the best rivalries that has never been is finally upon us.

Tucker vs. Stephenson.

The two DeKalb powers, who are tied with county neighbor M.L. King for first place in 6-AAAAA, will meet for the first time in the schools’ histories at Hallford Stadium on Friday in the first of three games among the three teams that will determine the top three seeds in 6-AAAAA.

The Tigers and Jaguars have a lot in common. Both are undefeated and in the top four of the AJC rankings (Tucker is No. 2, Stephenson is No. 4); both offenses are among the top six in Class AAAAA (Tucker is No. 1 at 47.8 points per game, Stephenson is No. 6 at 40.8); and both defenses are among the top seven in AAAAA (Stephenson is No. 5 at 6.3 points per game allowed, Tucker is No. 7 at 8.2).

Tucker leads DeKalb in rushing with 368 yards per game and has the county’s two leading runners in Yusuf Minor and Dallas Rivers. Stephenson, led by Evans Jones, is second in the county with an average of 264.

So who wins? And how big will it be when the winner meets M.L. King later this season?

This should be a great one.

Here are some of the other games in Class AAAAA this week that will have playoff implications:

*Northgate at Creekside: Northgate won a region title in 2011 but is off to a 2-4 start against a difficult schedule after last week’s close loss to 4-AAAAA favorite Whitewater, but a victory against Creekside would put the Vikings back in the playoff hunt. Creekside would all but clinch a spot in the region play-in games with a victory.

*Rome at North Paulding: If East Paulding and Allatoona finish in the top two spots in 5-AAAAA, as many expect, then this game is likely to determine the third- and fourth-place teams. Rome and North Paulding are in good position for playoff berths after beating fifth-place Hiram.

*Clarke Central at Heritage-Conyers: Clarke Central will be short-handed for its 8-AAAAA game against Heritage after five players, including quarterback Cameron Johnson, were ejected from last week’s game against Salem and have to serve a one-game penalty. Heritage probably needs to win this game if it has any hopes of finishing higher than fourth place in the region.

FIRST!!!

Yes Chip…ROME at NORTH PAULDING (baring some VERY odd circumstance) WILL decide the # 3 & # 4 seed for the Region 5 AAAAA playoffs. Many at the start of the season had ROME at # 3 and HIRAM at # 4 in this region BUT ROME shutout HIRAM 21 / 0 and EAST plays at HIRAM tomorrow night.

I was saying from day one to watch out for NORTH PAULDING as they are the ONLY team so far this year to score ANY points on the EAST “D”. They put up 17 points and played a tough game all night before EAST finally won 38 / 17. They have 5 wins since that game and stand at 5 / 1 on the season, I look for them to beat ROME tomorrow night and then they have PAULDING COUNTY, ALLATOONA, & VILLA RICA left. NORTH could EASILY end up 8 / 2 and if ALLATOONA is looking past them at the EAST game NORTH could be 9 / 1.

Either way NORTH PAULDING has had a stellar year and is looking at a playoff game and with a bit of luck HOSTING a playoff game. CONGRATS!!!

Look out for Nov. 9th in “THE BONEYARD” as EAST and ALLATOONA meet for the first time in what will be a game to decide the REGION 5 AAAAA TITLE…It will be a playoff game before the playoffs!!!

But before then tomorrow night it’s time to “SWAT SOME HORNETS”!!!

The quarterbacks ability to make plays will be crucial in the Tucker – Stephensen game. The quarterback for Tucker while never mentioned when discussing the best quarterbacks in Georgia, has the ability to make big plays at crucial moments. Tucker will eventually wear down Stephensen and get victory number 6.

I expect this to be a tough matchup for both squads. If I recall correctly, Tucker and Stephenson regularly scrimmaged in the preseason/offseason so there is some familiarity if this is true. Even though Tucker is giving 5pts, I see this game as more of a toss-up. If I’m betting though, I have to go with the points…..so Stephenson it is.

NoDistrictLinesInDekalb if you think that MLK will be playing for 3rd place you are sadly mistaken… MLK has Stephenson’s number now and Tucker won’t be far behind because they play them back to back and I can guarantee you that KING will come out victorious in both games. Stephenson lack of adjusments will beat them and Tucker hasn’t seen an offense like MLK ever. They will be clicking on all cylindars in Nov and I will bet you that Tucker will be panting from trying to slow down the no-huddle.

How can you wear a team down that don’t have kids going both ways like Tucker. Tucker only plays about 14 players on offense, defense and special team the whole game. So believe this there will be some plays where Tucker lineman take plays off. Both teams had 2 weeks to prepare and My Friends its going to be a Cat Fight. Just so you know Tucker has countinues rotation on both the O and D Line. And also in the Backfeild, that’s way Tucker players don’t have big stat numbers as individuals but as a team. Last year as a “team” they rushed for over 4,000 yards w/o having a thousand yard rusher. So if the line of scrimmage is where the game will be won, Tucker wins easily ;-)

@camden74 – We in 5A and mostly region 6 have been wondering the same…WHERE IS JAB? One thing is for sure, if Stephenson pulls off the UPSET, then Saturday morning JAB will be front and center on his keyboard. (LOL)

@Reeze – I agree, Saturday morning Jag Nation wakes up and ask the question…Did anyone get the number to that speeding truck that just ran pass us?

To MLK Supporters – Tucker has seen and defeated many hurry-up offensives on their way to State Championships and yearly deep playoff runs…Nothing New for the Tigers.

PS Tiger4Life – explanation about Tucker’s team offensive rushing is VERY true and it has been this way for YEARS. You can’t focus on one or two RB’s, because you will need to deal with an average of 8 and most of them will be returning for the 2013 season, so more of the same to come.

Prediction – Tucker wins by 10

@True Blue. After the game we will see which lineman took a play or two off. This wont be like the scrimmage games played between these teams. I guess the assumption for Stephensen posters is they are playing down in classification this year and a 4A team cant compete with you. You will scratching your head wondering what happened around 1030-11pm friday night.

@Everyone Against Tucker, There is no evidence that Stephenson can compete in a game of this magnatude. History is our most trusted source of honesty. Time and time again Stephenson has played in big games and time and time again they have failed to answer the charge. So what can you tell me is different about this year????

They have graduated at least 15 D1 players every year since 2006, still no success, they have won their region a number of times, still they found no success, they have even played in the dome for the chance to go to a championship game against Lounds County and that team was arguably the best they have ever had, still no success. Mostly the same coaches are there, same school is there and yet you are predicting a win……… where is the evidence?

Tucker on the other hand has played countless amounts of significant games since 2007, with two championships and semifinals games to show. We are proven and we are successful for a reason… We know how to compete and win in big games!!!!

Bring all that you can but our experience in these kind of games is going to be put on display Friday night. You can do whatever you think will work but the results will still be the same. Tucker by 14 or more.

However, I will caution you against one thing… please don’t try to produce another “Beef it up” video! Didn’t work out too well the last time you tried it. LMBO

Because Tucker hasn’t played in the highest classification, they are rated in the TOP 5 of all GA football teams, regardless of classification, ahead of many highest classification teams, while only one in 5A is rated higher and it isn’t Stephenson.

Stephenson can’t win during the playoff and don’t hate on the talent there, because for years Tucker had alot of talent but couldnt win the big games.Do you remember the teams in the 90s going underfeated but losing in the first round and them team was stack with talent. UNTIL Stephens came thats when Tucker got over the hump. But Friday will be the beginning of a rivarly and like I SAID BEFORE IT WILL BE A CLOSE GAME. And don’t hate because STEPHENSON help kids get in school just have your coaches do the same thing. Tucker has alot of talent and 2 times STATE CHAMPION BUT DOESNT LEAD THE COUNTY in sending kids to COLLEGE. @True Blue we send a whole hellava lot of kids to school since the middle 90’s fella. The only reason stephenson sends more is because they have a bigger school enrollment thus more kids on the team. But all that means nothing cause when we hit the field we will see who looks like D1 material and who doesn’t. Tucker wins by 14 or more!!! We are Tucker and We run this STATE. Tucker gonna make stephenson wish they move up in classification. Stephenson stayed down because they think it gravy. They couldnt compete with the other 6A schools so they stayed down. Hahah. Don’t be fooled by KING. They will be prepared for tougher competition. It is a thing that I know for a fact. The truth is, personally, I do not like the attitude where as you toy with lesser competition. It is against everthing I know, I believe it will come back to bite you. AND the discipline thing is huge and growing. Others will not say what I am saying but I believe in having a killer instinct and coaching and playing every game as if you would your last. If you treat every game as a prep game, you might get stuck in that mode.

I am not a great philosopher or genius. I am just stating my opinion!!!!!! For those who do not like it . . . . . .I a quite sure you have your own opinion!!!!!!

Dboy Stephenson have played up the last 3 years. Its just this year they decide to play in their right classification. @Dekalb County Guy. Miller Grove only looks good against mediocre competition. When they played a decent Mays team Miller Grove looked like a middle school. I was there expecting a competitive game but could barely stand the beat down Mays put on them. Miller Groves only score came from a kick off return for td. Miller Grove had one of the easier first half of season schedules but now they have to face Tucker SWD Stephensen and MLK in second half of their schedule. We will see how they do against teams with winning records.

@ Tucker DAD,you are speaking out from unknown land, “There is no evidence that Stephenson can compete in a game of this magnatude”. Stephenson has been playing in big games every year. They have lead the state in division I college recruits, winning their region seven times, making the playoffs every year! Tucker finally won the big one under coach Stevens other than that they haven’t done anything, Stephenson is still a relatively new school and a powerhouse. These kids get coached well and get exposure to big time football. Their coaches work hard for them. So all HATERS go sit down….

Very good points JAB. Taking nothing away from Tucker High School I expect a very good football although I also expect some mistakes made on boths sides of the ball. I believe this game will come down to a penalty resulting in a firrst down, or whoever has the ball last will win the game. Stephenson can win this game if they do to things.
1. Win field position & score when opportunity present itself
2. Defense Defense Defense getting off the field. Clock management. Staying relaxed & playing loose.
These are the keys to me for a victory for Jaguar nation.

MLK, Stephenson, Miller Grove are not as good as everyone thinks, they can not drive the ball down field when it is needed. They are a big play offenses and that will not win this region neither take them pass the first round in the state playoffs. You can say what you want but a very young Dunwoody team exposed MLK tonight. Dunwoody has played Tucker, Stenphenson and Miller Grove out of those three teams Tucker is the best from start to finish.

Dunwoody played Stephenson, Miller Grove and MLK tough for three quarters and the only reason those three schools put up 40 points was due to Dunwoody being young and playing 10 sophmores two ways and them just being worn down in the 4 quarter.

Dunwoody can not compete in this region day in and day out with 45 Varsity players, but they have exposed the so called other three best teams in region for what they are all HYPE, not well coached. So mark my word Stephenson, Miller Grove and MLK, you will only play one more game than Dunwoody.

@JAB, You make my point EXACTLY!
“Stephenson has been playing in big games every year”, Right and they have not won any of them! Let me refresh your memory…. last year you lost to MLK 49-50, lost to Lowndes 0-7, in 2010 you lost to MLK again 24-26 and to Hilgrove 23-28, in 2009 you lost to Colquitt 20-21 after a undefeated season, might I add you were a 1 seed and they were a 3 seed.

So say what you will but I have my facts straight. You have under acheived, under performed and over sold your team every year since I have been reading these blogs but I choose to ignore it since you were in a different class, but not this year! I understand being a fan and I respect that of you but when you just carry on with this BLIND reckless support that’s another thing! Stephenson has failed to live up to the HYPE every year and you FANS(fanatical) keep making excuses every year. STOP MAKING EXCUSES and just win!

We don’t wan’t to hear about how many players going D1, we don’t want to hear about how many players are playing professional football, we only wan’t to hear about what this team is going to do this year. If you can’t do that then BEAT IT and stay off the blog!!!!

Tucker – Loss 39-20
Miller Grove – Loss 21-20
MLK – Loss 24-6
Mays – Loss 30-15

Toughest opponent of the above was Mays! Really flying under the radar!

We should have beaten both Stephenson and Millergrove. Played MLK well for all four quarters.

Tucker game was really a blow out though we surprised them with a few early touchdowns. They adjusted well. Tucker is fast, the most physicial team by far of any of the above, and well coached.

I agree with you but to a certain extent, Stephenson hasn’t had any luck in big games but it only takes one big win to start the cycle. Like I already heard someone say Tucker hasn’t always won the big games maybe recently but it all had to start somewhere, I can remember during the early to mid 90’s Tucker had great teams but continued to fall short once the playoffs started. Just ask all world running back Patrick Pass and company about losing to Columbia his junior year and we weren’t even supposed to be on the same field with them. My point is winning the big games had to start somewhere maybe it was Coach Stephens that turned it around for them but maybe this is the year Stephenson does what it hasn’t done for the only Coach the school’s ever had. Its amazing how every year you guys count MLK out, saying they won’t be this team, won’t beat that team and they eventually beat them. Same has been said about Stephenson the past two years and you see Stephenson demorilized and then vanish after the first round of the playoffs. MLK is making mistakes, but they are still winning ball games and granted they can’t keep making mistakes and expect to win. They will beat Tucker and will beat Tucker pretty good.

U still don’t get it, I’m aware that Tucker has the state’s longest win streak and that they’re the defending state champion but that doesn’t mean they’re going to win. If that was the case it would never be a such thing as a upset, streaks are great but they’re meant to be broken that’s just reality.
Don’t make it seem like I dont like or respect Tucker, I’m just saying I don’t see how yall can be so confident against a team you haven’t played in a real game.

@ Maxy – That’s exactly my point. We have roughly nine players going both ways and Stephenson only beat us by ten points. It was less than a touchdown game going into the fourth quarter. Our guys just tired.

And, you’re also correct in that we don’t have the number of D1 athletes that Stephenson has yet Stephenson doesn’t have the caliber of “student” athletes that we have either.

I’m sure most of the Stephenson players that don’t make it to the NFL will one day work for the Arabia kids!

Tucker is clearly the better team!!!

rwdekalb,

If you want to be technical about transfers the leaders in the state were South Gwinnett and Brookwood and if you want to bring up Dekalb schools, the leaders were Stephenson with 30 AND Tucker with 29 and this is not just a football report, its an all sports report, so make sure you do your research before you post. I’m taking Tucker over Stephenson tonight and MLK over both of them in back to back weeks.

To the Stephenson Fans

Just came upon a pack of hungry looking Tigers, off LaVista Rd, leaving a den named “Tucker High School”. They made their way to E. Ponce and took a right. They traveled about a mile and ½ and made a left on S. Indian Creek. After marching and growling, (it sounded very freighting), about ½ mile and they turned left on College in front of this open air jungle, named James Hallford Stadium, many may know as Memorial Stadium. At this point, this proud and very confident Tiger (the others call Coach Lamar), who was leading the pack, stopped and turn to the others and with a very stern and aggressive look in his eyes and with a earth shattering growl, said to his boyz…”Tonight I give you a special treat…Tonight we feast on Jaguar meat”. And with one quick motion and teeth snarling, they leaped of the fence…I couldn’t count them all, because it was done so effortless and as one unit (some call a team); it must have been 45 or more. Let me say this, those Jaguars named Stephenson might not want take this hungry pack of Maroon & Gold Tigers lightly, after what I have witness, now and in the past. And that’s the end of this story. (LOL)

JAGUAR NATION WELCOME TO THE TIGERS OF TUCKER JUNGLE – This game must be played for ALL four quarters, let up and you want be able to catch up!!!

@Tucker DAD – We Tigers fan have designated you as the spokesman for keeping JAB in line. Keep letting him know 5A fans know a thing or two about this class and he is a newbie. Well done and well said my fellow Tucker fan.

@arabia rams – Good posts. I attended three of the games you mention and my analysis would have been the same on these games. Keep the faith, the Rams are a new school and team with potential and just needs time to build. Playing in this region can grow a young football team up quickly. At this time, Arabia Mtn has scored the most against the #2, soon to be #1 team in 5A – Hats off to them.

@dekalbcounty football – I hope the GHSA hasn’t penciled last night’s MLK-Dunwoody officials for tonight’s BIG CAT showdown…would be a shame, the stripes marred this expected epic.

@Mr. Johnson – Good to heard quality posts from fans that support their team. Your Lions get their opportunity at auditioning for the lead role, Nov 2nd. It had to be a concern for all MLK fans, when the team in the region, that will probably win 1 game (North Atlanta), has the lead going in the half and yet, the Lions still have Stephenson and Tucker left. Tucker’s game plan, and you may not be familiar with this, is full speed…peddle to the metal, from quarter #1 to #4 on ANY opponent.

I have been saying for a while that Tucker is overrated. They are a good team but for years, they have looked much better then they actually are because they have played mediocre teams. This is a rebuilding year for Stephenson and they still beat a “stout” Tucker team. If im not mistaken I believe I read that most of Stephensons players were underclassmen….

Tucker played Lovejoy for state!!! If Lovejoy and Tucker played in the division Stephenson and MLK played in last year it is no doubt in my mind they wouldn’t have made it that far. Tuckers biggest divisional rival was SWD and Stephenson DEMOLISHED SWD 32-0.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe Tucker and Stephenson are top teams in Dekalb BUT Tucker has just been overrated

October 13th, 2012
9:29 am

Well say what you want about the HIRAM / EAST game…It was a “PINK OUT” night at HIRAM and both sides showed there spirit in support of this cause.

EAST was coming off a BYE week and had yet to play a team that had really tested their “D”, IT SHOWED they looked VERY sluggish at the start and the question of “could HIRAM score on EAST” was settled right at the start as HIRAM broke of a LONG run and put up 6 before folks were barely settled in the stands! They missed the extra point and led 6 to 0…the first team to score against EAST since the opening game with NORTH 5 weeks ago!

That seemed to wake EAST up and they drove back to go ahead for good 7 / 6 with a touchdown of their own. EAST put up several more TD’s and HIRAM had a field goal for the score to get to 28 / 9 at one point. A lot of HIRAM fans started to leave thinking another “blow-out” was in store BUT sloppy play on EAST part giving up the ball twice on turnovers gave HIRAM quick scores and with plenty of time left the score had closed to EAST 35 HIRAM 30!!!

SUDDENLY we had a BALLGAME!!! HIRAM has a big strong QB and #24 is just plain FAST!!! Between these two guys they made the EAST “D” miss all night!! If #24 got the corner HE WAS GONE! FAST!!!

The ref’s had several situations where they made mistakes none of which were game changers, on a HIRAM breakout run where #24 made his moves and was gone for a long TD the Ref had the flag in his hand ready to call an OBVIOUS holding but put the flag back in his pocket…????

Later in the game the refs game HIRAM two (2) chances to go for it on 4th down as they lost track of the downs and NEVER changed from 3rd to 4th until AFTER HIRAM ran the play…by the scoreboard and the chain marker it stayed at 3rd but in reality it was the 1st 4th down. They didn’t make it and ran a 2nd 4th down play!!!

Then late in the game east scored a TD…from about the HIRAM 25 / 30 yard line…Flag from a ref on the far side (HIRAM side) play called back, EAST scores AGAIN on the same play TD…play called back again (same Ref)…LOL! 3rd try EAST scores again!! This time no flag!!!

HIRAM kept coming back but the EAST “D” finally got a turnover as they intercepted and returned for a TD, EAST needed a game where they had to play 4 quarters and hopefully this will be a good game for EAST to look back at as they prepare for ROME this coming week in “THE BONEYARD”…

The shutout streak is over for the “D” but a win is a win…
the RAIDERS are still UNDEFEATED at 6 / 0!!! and the “D” is till averaging a VERY respectable 7.8 pts per game!!!

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
GO RAIDERS!!!

With all the smack talking that 5AReg6Fan and others did prior to the game, the fact is the margin of victory should’ve been greater. Stephenson shut down Tucker’s heralded ground attack…smothered it. The only player on Tucker’s side who decided to play like a champion is their quarterback #1. Dude played hard to the very last few seconds of the game and single handedly kept it close. Although the refs blew the call on their only lucky score…the quarterback threw a touchdown strike on a busted play when he was clearly over the line of scrimmage. Refs missed it, but everyone else in the stands, coaches, and the TV highlights show it.

All that aside, this was a great game between two virtually even teams. Stephenson outplayed Tucker and won the game…plain and simple. I will end by saying Tucker played hard but was classy in defeat…there was no whining or foolishness after the loss. They showed class and respect at the end of the contest. I predict they will be a team to be reckoned with the rest of the season. This loss could very well be an impetus for beating the remaining teams on their schedule. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them demolish the rest of their opponents, including ML King.

10:17 pm

@BIGD- Tucker proved that they are NOT better then Stephenson. Yeah they won a state title but they never had to play Stephenson to get there. In actuality Tucker only won a state title because the teams they had to play on the way there were MEDIOCRE at best. I mean they played freaking LOVEJOY for a state title. Tucker wouldn’t have won state if they were in the division Stephenson and MLK was in last year! And you know whats funny? This is not considered a “great” stephenson team. This is one of stephenson worst teams in years, and they still shut down tuckers “STOUT” offense. Tucker DEFIENTLY wouldn’t have wanted to see Stephensons 2009 – 2011 teams.

Stephenson and MLK will run this division like we ran our other division. Tucker has never played with the big boys.

And to be honest Stephenson could have SHUT tucker out, they were playing conservative.

Stephenson and MLK are young schools they will get a title VERY SOON.

Can’t say Tucker is better than Stephenson right now in the current year when Stephenson beat us.

@Really bro? – Your logic is also faulty about our state Championship last year when Lovejoy has now moved up to the REAL big boy football which is AAAAAA.

In reality, there are solid teams that could compete in any division from AA through AAAAAA.

Tucker will be fine and a loss is never good but I’d rather it now than to experience what Stephenson seems to experience every single year and that is an early exit in the playoffs.

First off for all those who keep saying this is one of Stephenson worst team. I beg to differ, As I see it this is one of their best TEAMS. The key word is Team. Stephenson has had teams with much better players. But if you look at this team, there are no, (quote) super star and glamour boys trying to show off for the cameras. They rotate 7 D-lineman, 6 Linebackers, 6 Runningbacks and no crying by the kids, or parents. So when you folks out there call yourself putting down this TEAM, saying they’re one of Stephenson worst. Take another look, through a different perspective, then you will see one of Stephenson’s best TEAMS. And when you get a team, that is willing to play for each other and not themselves thats when it turns special. So keep your eyes open.

Also let` stop trying to tear down others accomplishments, folks keep saying you beat Lovejoy, as if Lovejoy could`nt possibly assemble a good set of players. Then folks say you had it easy, well people, there has been times when the stars aligned for Stephenson to head straight to the Dome, and they fell short. So you can`t take something away from another man simply to make yourself feel good, instead let`s go get our own. They did what we can do, play the team across from you (no matter who it is ) and beat them, the math is really simple.

I would like to see the adjustments made after the win for Stephenson & Tucker after there lost. Will the Jaguars play up and even better for the rest of the season or will this one game define them and start playing down to the competition. Will Tucker regroup and play more relaxed football and get back on track or will this lost define there remaining games. Will MLK take advantage of the hype by people saying they are the best kept secret in the Region and run the table? Only the next 4 weeks will tell and the grand finale MLK vs Stephenson. @DeeDawg – Yep smack was talked by me prior to the BIG CAT showdown on Oct 12th, but this talk was done on the side of both fans of these great football PROGRAMS. Stephenson got the well-deserved victory and congrates to JAGUAR NATION. I disagree with #1 being the only player that left it on the field for Tucker, all the Tigers played and lost as a team. You have to feel for the Tucker kids #5, who dropped a pass in the end zone and #25, who carried 5 defenders on his back for about 15-20 yrds and fumble before or after his knee was down. Every one of us keyboard athletes have their opinion and loyalty, but to say the margin of victory should have be greater, well you and I where at two different games. Either team could have won, Stephenson got the victory.

Again, a well-deserved win for the Jaguars and let’s represent the region doing playoff time.
