We’re looking at some pretty good games this week …
Stephenson-Tucker (both undefeated)
West Forsyth-Johns Creek (both undefeated)
Fitzgerald-Brooks County
Calvary Day-Savannah Christian
Lincoln County-Aquinas (last great public-private game of season)
Then there’s Lowndes-Valdosta thing, maybe the state’s best rivalry.
But let’s talk about Lovett – 2-4 record, losers of four straight. How can the Lions be ranked?
One effect of going to six classifications this season was smaller regions. Which means fewer region games. No better example exists than Region 6-AA, which has five teams. Four of them are potential Top 10 teams in GAC, Lovett, Westminster and Wesleyan.
With only four region games, those teams had six non-regions to schedule.
Lovett has played six games, five against teams currently ranked in highest classifications. Those are #8 Blessed Trinity (AAA), No. 2 Marist (AAAA), No. 5 St. Pius (AAA), No. 7 Fort Payne (AAAAA in Alabama) and No. 3 Washington County (AAA). (Lovett is the only team to come within 14 points of Fort Wayne, btw.)
The non-ranked team is Woodward Academy. Woodward is 4-2, its losses to Lovett and Blessed Trinity. Woodward has been in and out of the AAA rankings twice and might still get in there before the season is done.
The Maxwell Ratings rank Lovett’s schedule as sixth-toughest in the state – in all classifications. Further Lovett’s average opponent is 29 points better than the average opponent of the other nine Top 10 teams in AA, according to Maxwell.
Strength of schedule is not enough. You still have to beat somebody. Lovett has beaten Blessed Trinity and Woodward. The only team in AA with two wins that good is No. 1 Calhoun (Carrollton, Ridgeland).

While I don’t know enough about every AA team to have a fair opinion, I find it hard to believe there are 10 AA teams better than Lovett. Well coached team with good, smart athletes who play hard. They deserve to stay ranked one more week.

Norcross beat 3 teams in the top ten…Colquitt in our scrimmage, North Gwinnett and Parkview.
If things hold in the regions Norcross will play number 4 in region 6 and then Grayson and then Camden. Who ever makes it through that meat grinder and also wins the state championship should be crowned National Champions!!!!

Never judge a book by it’s cover, Someone needs to read before they say they know what is in the book. When the book is opened, the inside is revealed, or exposed. Soon we will see what all is made of. Exposure can be damaging. The second season awaits.

@ TODD … I thought the Public Schools ( Class A ) would bounce back this week and get one or maybe two teams back in the Top 10 after your take on how the Private schools dominated last week’s Top 10 ( 7 of 10 …. AGAIN ). …. guess, I’ll get me some BBQ for that crow.

Let’s not forget the undefeated Carver Panthers. I have been saying this since week 2 we are a well balanced team that still flies under the radar until you line up across from us. Huge line, a stable of running backs, and a stingy D equals a lot more wins. We will take our respect on the field since it is not given in the paper.

Tough call on that #10 AA spot. A lot of possibilities there: Screven, Westside-Augusta, Early County, Bowdon, Jefferson, I think a case could be made for quite a few teams. I’ll give you credit for not taking the easy way out on this one.

Tucker will finally shut the big mouth, we got the most recruits team up, right JAB. I saw you guys play you won’t have the most recruits this year. Your team is not that good. Young receivers, overrated QB, noooooo Running backs (remember b4 you say we have 6, that means you have none) and none of them or better than our 4th guy. Your LBer are slow and don’t attack the line well your D -line is ok but passive, your corners and safeties need I say more. All adds up to a Tigers WIN. Can anyone, anyone dispute what I just said. The answer is no.
Defending and Champ.

in all reality it would be another good game…..lowndes did leave points on the field….yall would have to find a running game to have a shot….not going to beat us by just passing….not on this d this year

I am a BC TROJAN fan but we have to beat the reigning state champ (Calhoun) to be the best. I was at the playoff game last year at Calhoun and they were clearly the more mature/experienced and better coached team. Brooks offensive coordinator sucks every year ! But first things first. Assuming everybody stays healthy and these two teams don’t have to meet until the finals in the Dome, the championship game will be between Eagles Landing Christian and George Walton, in my opinion. They are both loaded with offensive talent and will ring your bell on defense. Having said that, I recognize that there are some other really good teams who can beat anybody else on a given day. But if ELCA and GWA bring their A game, they should survive to the Dome.

Stephensen posters keep saying Tucker never played any good teams. Don’t you realize there have been some 4A and even 3A teams that could have beaten both Stephensen and MLK. There are some very well coached disciplined teams that played in lower classification than you. Its not as if you dominted anything playing up. Everyone knew you would ususally be gone by the third round. At least Tucker won it all twice in 5yr span. You have 0 titles and 0 finals appearances and you have the audacity to criticize Tucker. Yellow Cats sure are quiet this week. Yall letting 57Cat do all your talking? Two weeks to prepare for Lowndes and the game’s at your place. BTW, Lowndes likes playing at Blazer Field. Yeah yeah, I know, it’s really “CLEVELAND FIELD”! I know ya’ll forget that and try to call it something else. LOL
All joking aside, this week’s Lowndes vs Valdosta game will certainly be the state’s game of the week. Twelve or thirteen thousand fans will squeeze into Bazemore Hyder stadium and witness two fine teams meeting on Cleveland Field. The game would be a sell out if the place could hold 25000 fans!
For the most part we have gotten over Valdosta scoring twice in the last minute to beat us 21 to 17 last year. Well, no, actually we haven’t. Not even memories of our 57 to 15 win a couple years ago over the Cats can ease the pain last year’s loss caused. But when we also remember the comeback win for us in Gillespie’s first year with the Cats, played on Cleveland Field, and the fact that before last year we had won 7 in a row over the once mighty Wildcats, we start to feel better. I’ve got a feeling, a strong one, that by this time next week we’re gonna feel REAL GOOD! GOOOOO LOWNDES!

WILDHAWG2012 -Who’s gonna be coaching Colquitt during those nine games? Surely as soon as the GHSA exonerates Lowndes of any guilt in Rush Probst “spy gate”, the Colquitt B of E will fire Probst at their first opportunity for throwing his Principal under the bus on the Moultrie radio minutes after the Lowndes game. That and for all the embarassment he has caused Colquitt County High School, its students, parents, fans, and school system employees.
If I were Randy McPherson I would sue Propst in court for defamation of character for Propst calling him “a blatant liar” in the newspapers .Even if everything Propst charged was true that’s not the way to handle it. He should have called McPherson and talked privately with him, instead of making all those public charges that he can’t back up. The man should be sent back to Alabama on the first bus outa town!

Tucker vs Stephenson should be a great game. Who picks these games for GPB what duds. Tucker should be game of the week with this one. No wonder Rommeny wants to cut the funding there. Why no south Ga games ?
@Wareagle I am still right Marist won’t give up a point in region play unless the game is way out of reach. (Chamblee has the best chance) Terrible region. Maybe if you play away and those slack refs from dekalb quarterback club refs call the game they may screw up and award the wrong team points.
Who makes the Lovett football schedules ? Someone must be smokin something over there. With those games playing the bigger schools if they make the playoffs they wont have anyone left to play talk about beating your players up. Keep them ranked for the schedule alone.
Whats up with MLK? 1st HC gone, OC in trouble,Principal replaced. Crime on campus. Maybe they will turn themselves in for recruiting next.
@Warthog go to http://ghsfha.org/index.php and you can find records for Blessed Trinity and St Pius. They both play a decent schedule. Not much different in strength between AAAA,AAA,and AA. Now I am talking about the top ten teams not the 0-5 teams. Some lower class teams have been taking out the higher class teams this year more than any other.
Can’t wait to see who will be the Dekalb County Champion between Tucker,Stephenson, and MLK. My money if I had some would be on Tucker !

You done yanked my chain. If the “Yellow Cat” fans are depending on me to speak for them, they better find someone else, ’cause I don’t do all that braggin’ and stuff. I know my team is not world beaters this year, but they are my team and ill be in Section C yelling my support as always. I did see your Vikings in the 1st half against Brunswick and they are fast! Number 2 and #4 are quick and both your O and D lines look good. Your QBs, in my opinion, are the weakest link in your offense, and that’s not saying they are lousy. I do believe, based on what i saw, Camden is, overall, a better team; but that will be proved, one way or the other, on Nov 2nd.
I hope for a good game when we play you and will be ecstatic if we pull out a win.
By the way, you Lowndes bloggers ought to just stand down and let bksmith14 speak for you. Seems like he knows everything and has all the best sources. Does his name mean he is 14, or thet he will graduate in 2014 (which would make him about 16 now)?

Wart Hog, I respectfully disagree.
SPX beat Westminster 21-3 (Westminster led undefeated #2 ranked Thomson until late in the 4th qtr)
SPX beat North Oconee 50-14 (North Oconee has lost only that game)
SPX’s only loss is to #2 ranked Thomson at Thomson. 21-14 A very good team with Chris Jordan at running back who will be one of the top running backs coming out of GA this year. 3 turnovers and Pius was driving with 3:00 left in game when they turned ball over on int.
SPX beat Lovett 24-0 ( Lovett was ahead of AAAA #2 ranked Marist late in their game before losing 24-16.
SPX beat Towers 48-6 (7 different players scored and the benched was cleared)
SPX beat McNair 34-0
Do you have other AAA teams in mind that should be ranked?

Ok, I’ve tried to hold my peace this season & can’t do it any longer. A couple of things to get off of my chest. 1) Camden welcome to region 1, it’s about time Nov.2 adds another chapter to this rivalry with the VIKINGS . 2) Norcross deserves to be ranked higher than(after watching them play twice they’re quietly good & noone is talking about them). Lassiter, 3) There’s not a dominant team in Cobb County, yes Lassiter is undefeated & so is South Cobb. SC shouldn’t be ranked yet, (I was at the North Cobb game) #40 is a heck of an athlete. Get through the meat of the schedule & then talk about rankings. Don’t understand why Grayson falls so far in the rankings, but they’ll be there in the playoffs along with Parkview, Brookwood, & North Gwinnett.

4) the level of competition week in & week out is what separates North/South Ga football. The level of competition continues to improve in metro Atlanta, especially in Gwinett & even in Cobb too. This is why southern teams that are seeded #3 & #4 upset the northern #1 & #2 teams more than the northern #3 seeds upset southern #1.

I still think North Hall deserves a little recognition. They are 4-1 right now with the only loss coming from Jefferson a month ago by six points; the same Jefferson team that just shutout then #7 Washington-Wilkes. Three of their four wins have come from teams with winning records. Chestatee, during the season opener, suffered their only loss of the season to North Hall then go into Toccoa and beat Stephens County when they were ranked #5. North Hall also routed Dawson County two weeks ago, the same DC team that was supposed to challenge Buford for the Region Crown.

RAIDERS (5 / 0) had a “BYE” week last week but are heading just down the road to HIRAM this week…HIRAM (3 / 2) had a win last week at LITHIA SPRINGS (0 / 5) …On paper this one looks like a blowout as Hiram is only averaging 19.6 points per game while it’s defense is allowing 18.6 points per game!
EAST on the other hand has put up 214 points to date for a per game average of 42.8 while only allowing 17 points in the first game against NORTH…since then the EAST “D” has shutout everyone else they have played…for an average of only 3.4 points per game!!!!
BUT…HIRAM is well coached and was an early season favorite to be the # 4 seed in the Region for a playoff spot. It’s also an in county game so there will be a big crowd on hand for the Hornets as always so EAST has to be ready and not let them pull off the upset!
With NORTH PAULDING winning again to go to 5 / 0 & ALLATOONA winning to stay undefeated (CONGRATS!) the Region 5 AAAAA bracket is starting to take shape. Nov. 9th in “THE BONEYARD” against ALLATOONA is still looking like the game to be at!!!!

‘’How the HELL is Lovett #10 in AA with a 2-4 record? That is just idiotic ‘’
Did you not read the defense of that pick? You might be right, though.
Come to think of it, no Chamblee ? What are they, 5-0, 6-0 ? Carrolton 3-2 and #4.Give me a break.’’
Do you think Chamblee is better than Carrollton? I doubt it. We’ll see.
‘’Pierce 5-1 first place in the region knocked off # 8 appling county and still not ranked. Some body needs to teach the person at AJC how to rank them.’’
Pierce has a good argument, but did lose to another unranked AAA team in Swainsboro. I think Swainsboro would have a better argument to be ranked than Pierce.
‘’ st pius and blessed trinity should not even be ranked in AAA polls. Weak schedule. Time will tell’’
Blessed Trinity and SPX have played the 5th- and 6th-hardest schedules in AAA, according to the computer Maxwell Ratings. Nothing weak about their schedules, IMO.
‘’ Gordon Central and Ridgeland should get some looks.’’
I like Ridgeland better than Central. But Central gets its shot next week vs. Cartersville. Ridgeland is looking good. Class AAAA is pretty deep, IMO.
‘’Screven County should be ranked!’’
They’re playing well. You might be right.
‘’So, an undefeated team (South Cobb), beats the number 5 ranked team in AAAAAA (North Cobb), and STILL doesn’t get recognition?’’
Not sold on North Cobb or South Cobb as a Top 10 team. Great win, though. Another big one looms for South Cobb in McEachern.
‘’North Hall deserves a little recognition. They are 4-1 right now with the only loss coming from Jefferson a month ago by six points; the same Jefferson team that just shutout then #7 Washington-Wilkes.’’
But it’s also the same Jefferson team that lost to unranked Class A Commerce (4-2).
‘’Clinch county and Savannah Christian in the top ten in A, How is this? Clinch county is not a top 20 team! Savannah Christian is rebuilding.’’
Both are rebuilding. I’m not super high on either, but candidates for the #9 and #10 spots are going to have their warts.
‘’Why isnt Grady Rank…’’
Grady has only one win over a team with a winning record since 2010, and that was a smaller school.
‘’Is there anything less meaningful than a high school football poll? THEY HAVE PLAYOFFS IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!
Nobody said they were meaningful.

Pecan……I disagree, IMO, Lassiter is one of the most dangerous teams in the state. If they’re on, they can beat any team in the state. They have good speed and quickness at the skilled positions and a QB who can light it up if he’s on. If they had a really good defense, I would have them on top as the team to beat, but since they don’t, IMO, they’re just a very dangerous team that could pose problems in the playoffs!…….

Lets compare a few teams .Camden has scored 280 points in six games. That averages out to 46.6 per game. They have allowed only 37, an average of 6.1. Thats pretty good. A 40.5 scoring differential. Lassiter has scored 220 pts. per contest average of 36.6. They have given up 74 for a 12.3 ppg. against. Lovejoy has scored 223 pts. for an average of 37.1 per game. They have allowed 54 pts., which is 9.0 points per contest. Grayson has put up 215 points for 25.8 per game and allowed 71 for 11.8 per game. In my opinion, these are the top teams in the state. The scoring Defense for these teams are among the best in the state. Camden=6.1, Lassiter=12.3, Lovejoy=9.0, and Grayson=11.8. All of these schools have a few “gimme” games on their schedule but they all have some tough competition too. Lovejoy played it’s toughest comp early with Colquit, Alpharetta and East Coweta. The others are just getting to the meat of their schedules. The road will be easier for Lovejoy from here on but not so for the others. Things are starting to shake out and we will find out who are the real contenders and pretenders.

A few Facts on the Tucker/Stephenson SHOWDOWN:
Fact – Is the GAME OF the week in 5A (period)…all eyes, across 5A will be on the outcome (score) come Saturday morning
Fact – The field truf @ Hallford will be on FIRE and DCFS should have a truck on site, ready to put out the flames
Fact – The winner will be playing for 1st and 2nd seat region position for the playoffs
Fact – The loser will be playing for 2nd and 3rd seat region position for the playoffs
Fact – Both teams will represent the region as playoff teams (Win or Lose)
Fact – This is the first recordable meeting of TWO DeKalb football POWERHOUSES
Fact – Stephenson has the opportunity of ending Tucker’s consecutive winning streak, or become another victim
Fact – At the time of this post, Tucker is #2 and Stephenson is #4, it is Stephenson goal to take Tucker’s spot, not Tucker’s to take Stephenson’s spot
Fact – Tucker will be the best team that Stephenson has played in a regular season region game, besides maybe MLK…no disrespect to others the Jags have played, but Tucker could have won a few region championships in Stephenson & MLK past class and region, last year would be a good example
Fact – Stephenson posters will need the Jags to win, since Tucker is an inferior opponent and the Tigers have never played anyone while they have WON multiple State Championships and yearly deep playoff appeances – Ask the middle GA POWERHOUSE who goes by the name of Northside Warner-Robins Eagles or NSWR and ranked the #1 team in 5A…petty GOOD program out of Warner Robins, who IMO is Tucker’s chief rival, expecially since our DeKalb fans (Stephenson & MLK), don’t clearly understand there are football programs that can compete with any of GA HS football program regardless of classification…Yes, Tucker is one of those
Oct 12th is fast approaching and to the Stephenson fans:

@ bksmith14 == Your early season schedule was far easier than any of the teams I mentioned. You played Luella, Newton, Windsor Forest and Hardaway. Camden played P’tree Ridge, Vanguard, Johnson and Beach but they have won 2 in your region. Lassiter played Kell, Hillgrove, Cherokee and sprayberry also Woodstock but they are considered #2 because of the D-1 talent.Grayson is Grayson, good but over-rated. Lowndes averages 40.8 ppg this year and is allowing 7.5 ppg.
@Friday NightsLightsFan == Based on what I have seen with my own eyes, Lovejoy would be no worse than 3rd or 4th. This is based on talent, coaching, desire, preparation and commitment. When the playoffs come around, you will see the same thing that happened last season. We will be doubted until we get there and still then. Remember, you were one of those who fit into that category last season, right ? None of you have to take me seriously, time will tell.

@uncleJunior – In most part I would agree with your comment about MLK fans and their respect for Tucker. It’s just a couple of Lions fans that for what reason, allow their comments to be lump with some of the Stephenson fans and requires bold comments from the Tucker supports. Personally, comments centered around Stephenson and MLK playing in a higher class and Tucker and other TOP programs in 5A should be concern are what gets me to question their understanding of GA football. I made it a point to list a couple of facts, my previous post, around this point. Because the Jags & Lions have moved down, where they should be, the road to the dome will not be a cake walk and both teams, as well as everyone else will have to play top level football, in ALL phases of the game and victory will not be won on talent along. The Tigers are looking forward to our Nov matchup, could be for the region championship.

Dang, the last 49 seconds of lst year’s game still hurts. But memories of 2009’s 57 to 15 Lowndes win helps to soothe the pain.

We watched you play in the dome against a poor Peachtree Ridge team and you still haven’t played anyone. Norcross has beaten 3 top ten teams thus far. I got news for you buddy…Camden is not nearly as good as you think they are and I’d bet a ton of money that Norcross would be 7-3 if we played Camden 10 times. Lowndes and Camden are good teams, but you don’t have any wins yet that tell me that they are great teams. Norcross has one of the toughest schedules in the state. Giving up 7.5 points per game or 2 points per game means nothing if you are not playing any real competition. The meat of both your schedules are coming up and we will see if you guys can pass the tests. I know two things, one is that Lowndes and Camden can’t go undefeated and two history will play no part in 2012. This years teams have to play the games. If your players and coaches are as arrogant as Camden 74 or BKSmith14 then either team has a shot.

It’s obvious you guys don’t have a clue as to what it takes to win on the big stage. All I hear about is athletic ability. If all it takes is athletic ability to win State Titles, then teams like Norcross, Stephenson, Lovejoy… etc.,would win every year!

All you know is the past few years. Do yourself a favor and look us up and note the longest stretch of losing. Mundys Mill opening was the reason Lovejoy has not enjoyed a 10 year run of consistant winning. The years 04-09, when half the talent was taken away. No excuses though. Thats O.K. Now is what is at stake. Just for the very well informed Camden74 == 1990-2000, Lovejoy was 4A. Was that the highest class? From 2000-2005, Lovejoy was 5A. From 2006-2007, they droped to 4A. 2008-2009, they were 5A again and from 2010-2011, they were 4A. Now tell me, does this make more sense to you? In 2012, they created a new class called 6A. Lovejoy now plays there. That makes 7 of the past 11 years that Lovejoy has played in the highest class. Are you satisfied yet?

sportsnut……Why is it that you guys can’t seem to understand it takes more than great athletes to win a State Title? Winning in the regular season year after year without a title becomes old hat after a while. If you take a look at Camden’s history, you’ll find there has always been a REGULAR SEASON winning tradition. But not until 2003 did a Camden School win a State Title since 1960! During that time, there were tons of great athletes! Regular season winning was not the issue, winning State Titles became the primary focus. As long as you guys thump your chest over winning regular season games, you’re going to get flack, especially from me! When you have the type of athletes that Norcross, Stephenson, Lovejoy…. etc. has, you should always be at least a threat to win state. No one fears your athletes, know why, because on the HS level, they NEVER live up to their potential! If you want to shut me up, take your GREAT ATHLETES to the State Title Game and WIN!

@ Yo == last I heard, No one knows what the future holds. You say either you or Camden will be there ? If so, then you both have other worries and priorities. Get there.@ Camden74 == You are not clear within your own mind. You say “chest thumping” for regular season wins means nothing but you admit that you have always been a winner albiet with only 3 state titles. The accomplishments are great but they are not now. Then you state that it took a long while for you to get your first. Do we fit into that mold or is that exclusive to you ? If you have been playing football since 1960 and you have constantly been a winner and have only titles to show, It must have been a lot of “chest thumping”, I mean alot. That is 52 years of football. You should have won more with those ton of athletes you have had. Where were those things you say we need? You started playing 30 years before us and you only have 3 more state titles than we do. Go figure! That is all in the past. Your winning percentage is .686 over the life of the program as compared to .596 for Lovejoy. Not a very big difference in that , is it? We have been on the stage before but only once on the big stage. Playoffs in 97′, 98′, 99′, 01′, 02′, 03′, 04′, 07′, 10′ and 11′. Remember, we have only been open since 90′. You want to know who knocked us out? Those are the likes of NSWR, West-side Macon, Lowndes, Whitewater, Glynn Academy, Houston County and we lost the AAAA title to Tucker. So you see, we have been to the dance and been beat by better teams at the time. That was then, this is now.@ bksmith14 == If I or any other of these fans thought that way, all our teams would have a point yeild average around 3. The fact is that they play varsity ball. At Lovejoy, if you suit up and play, you are on the team. PERIOD!

sportsnut…..I believe you have a few comprehension issues. I stated there were no State Titles by a Camden School in the years between 1960 and 2003. I never said a Camden school had never won a State Title before 2003, because they had. Lovejoy has the same problem that Camden had from 1970 until the Jeff Herron era at Camden, and that’s having great athletes, very good teams and NO State Titles. The difference is that Herron focused on building a championship program, not just winning games and having winning teams. That my friend is the major difference between Camden and Lovejoy! Camden Fans have always supported football, but I guess it got to a point where just winning games was not enough. It seems that Lovejoy, and some others, with great athletes, haven’t gotten to that point yet! And as long as you all believe just having great athletes will be your saving grace, you will be disappointed every year!

@ Camden74 == So you are saying it is a mindset? What coach or player does not want to win a state title? None that I know of. We are talking about Camden County High School aren’t we? Right now I think Camden is about 3 games better in the strength of schedule over Lovejoy. The combined record of their respective opponents are as follows, Camdens are 14-18 compared to 11-21 for Lovejoys. Still not much of a difference is there? You have played weak teams just as we have. The point is that you are not that much better overall. The true diffefence is that we are not elitist. We know that on any given day, we could lose. You, my friend have elevated yourself so high that you can not even think anyone can get close to you. That is the difference. It took a different mindset from Herron to change the culture and now the mindset is you can’t be beat and no one else can accomplish what you have! Should I start calling you “Your Highness74″

sportsnut…..Why are you even going there with this conversation? Here is EXACTLY what I’m saying. I can’t tell you if every coach and player wants to win a championship. Believe it or not, that’s not every coach’s and/or player’s priority! Yes, winning is a mindset and winning championships is a mindset. There are plenty of players and coaches who know what it takes to win, there are many who don’t know. Bottom line is this, are the coaches and players who know what it takes to win championships willing to “DO” what it takes to win championships? Now, how many of you are willing to answer that question? It’s about more than lip service, chest thumping, great athletes..etc……Everyone from the Head Coach to the Water Boy has to buy into doing what it takes to accomplish the goal of winning a State Title! Believe it or not, everyone is not willing to do what it takes! That’s the advantage Camden and other Championship Programs have over those who have not won Championships! Everyone, including the community has bought into doing what it takes to win Titles! That doesn’t mean you win the Title every year, but once you win, it lays the foundation for MORE winning! It becomes a MINDSET! Jeff Herron has laid the foundation and now it the Camden MINDSET…..Every year,Camden’s goal is to win the State Championship!

Camden74 – I agree mostly with your post at 4:58pm (and I realize I’m butting into the conversation), but I want my coach, first and foremost, to be all about building character. That is not to say that that priority mutually excludes the objective of winning championships. To place priority on winning championship at all costs risks getting a coach like one who has been popular on the blogs recently. All that having been said, I do not want a coach who doesn’t care about winning, ’cause striving to win/achieve is a major component of building character.

57Cat – I was a young Valdosta fan in 1957, selling cokes and popcorn in the stands with a coke crate and sling over my neck, like a whole lot of kids did back then. I believe Bozy Thomas was the QB, or was it Dale Williams? Were Johnny Welch and Ben Smith on the 57 team? When did Ben Stanaland play center? Robert Hughes RB and SE?
Did you play football, and if so, what was your number? You obviously learned manners and respect from someone, perhaps from Coach Baze?
I hope both teams play their best Friday night in the Winnersville Classic, and when we all go home hopefully we can rest assured the best team won. I hate it when thrown hankies and mistakes by a kid trying his hardest to do good, affects the outcome of a game.

make no mistake about it….lowndes is a better football team than valdosta…..we are 6-0…while they are 3-2 …….
they have socred 127 points and given up 85 in only 5 games
lowndes has scored 243 while only giving up 45 in 6 games….
defense wins ball games in this region……and valdosta ..if they havent found one since they last played are going to take this one on the chin fri night.
Lowndes has about 13 or 14 ints this year …….so if all yall want to do is throw we will add 2 or 3 more to the collection…..running it isnt going to work…….so i guess we will be adding some ints
i do expect a very emotional game…….valdosta cannott afford to lose this game …for many reasons…and they are going to pull out all the stops i am sure…but lownde is just to solid on both sides of the ball this year in my opinion……
lowndes 31-17 over the cats

Parkview at #6? Yes, a miracle season so far beating Grayson & Brookwood. But they can’t pass, and their 20-0 loss against #3 Norcross proves a one dimensional offense with a very find defense. 2nd round of the playoffs max. Remember, I called it here.

bksmith14 — I can’t, even in my wildest dreams, see Valdosta scoring 17 points on us Friday night. Maybe 10 at the absolute most. I predict Lowndes wins 22 to 10, with us going for one two point conversion. My dream would be to shut them out on Cleveland Field, Death Valley, Bazemore Hyder Stadium, Blazer Field, or whatever they are calling it this week.

AVikingFan – You are talking about some of my classmates! I did not play football but knew Coach Bazemore very well even into my adult years. Ben Smith was the bowling ball fullback in the T-formation; Robert Johnson was the QB of the ‘57 team. Dale Williams was QB of the ‘58 team (he later coached Waycross). I probably bought a coke from you, we always stood on the very top row of the student section. Those really were the good old days!
I hope for a good game Friday night with good sportsmanship shown by all, players and fans alike. I can’t wait for the Camden-Lowndes game. I saw you guys against Brunswick and you guys are good! I think Camden may have a few more playmakers, but we shall see.

Lovett should absolutely be ranked in this poll. Not only b/c of the extremely tough schedule and how well they have competed vs those teams but also based on the credibility they have earned as a program. Mike Muschamp has taken his team to the playoffs every year he has been there (7 years in a row). In the 5 seasons prior to last year, Lovett had been to the State Finals (2007), the semi-finals three times (’06, ‘09, ‘10) and the quarterfinals in 2008. This team knows how to win in the playoffs, and becuase the Univ of Buford was in Lovett’s region all those years, they had to go on the road and win all those playoff games.
Lovett has great chance of going 4-0 in region play, winning their region and making a deep playoff run this year. No reason to bet against them (let alone leave them unranked).

57Cat — I sit near Mrs. Baze at church. I enjoyed many conversations with Baze and Buck Thomas during their latter years. Mr. Thomas was my principal in the 6th and 7th grade at the old Valdosta Jr. High, now Valdosta Middle School, before I transferred to county schools.
I still think Robert Johnson was one of Valdosta best ever QB’s, and I remember Dale Williams getting his back hurt at Thomasville. Kidney I believe. Ben Smith went to Tech with Johnny Welch. Smith was followed at FB by Victor Finley. One of the Tarts played QB sometime during those years, I think 59. Bruce Bennett in 60 and 61, and Rick Thomas in 62.I think Smercina (Sp?) was one of the Cat’s best pure passers, in the mid 60’s.

AVikingFan – Here are some more names for: Johnny Jones, Jimmy Carroll, Gene Boone, Fred Riggs, Mike White (these guys were on the line, with Fred at end. Robert Johnson was QB, Arthur Strom and Johnny Welch were at HB, and Ben Smith was FB. We went 13-0 and won the AA State Championship. By the way, we did not have a 200 pounder on the team. (OK, bloggers, I know I’m still living in the past, but those truly were the best of times.)

I can`t until friday, Stephenson will finally get what they deserve. They know from the scrimmage last year whats coming. their are just not in the same league. So fellows facts are factssss. T-2012 is to strong for them, the backs are nooooo comparison, not as big, fast, quick, or tough as the Tucker`s Trio, Stephenson line is big soft and slow, Tuckers are smaller but more athletic and much more aggressive on both sides of the ball, the corners (not great on either team, but decent) almost a push but I think Tucker`s tackles a little better. LBer`s- Stephenson definitely don`t have the edge their, our guys are stronger and faster and when hit threw you. Or QB is more athletic, but not as accurate (but we won`t need to pass anyway) we will have over 300 rushing yards and allow maybe 120, most of that will come in the 4th when the JV takes over for tucker. It`s not personal, we are just to damn strong for you. Where ya at JAB, you said most of this yourself at the beginning of the year, so am I lying or will you let the people know. are you gonna appear after the game and say we have more scholarships. Blah, Blah, Blah Like Usher said “we are you know, we they needed someone” your going know where fast you`ve reach the climax, so here where we saparate. Stephenson 4-1, Tucker 6-0. MLK your day is coming so stop hiding behind the door peeking out. We see you too.

Good luck Tucker! Never has so much been written about so little when it comes to Stephenson. Just like last year with all those D1 recruits, and Lowndes shut’em out!

Yeah but Lowdnes didn’t look that impressive neither winning 7-0, really could’ve gone either way I was there.

Boy you better hope Tucker can back up all this talk you’re doing because if not you’re going to be eating crow all next week and for the rest of the season. I’m not even a Stephenson fan but you’re way passed confident for a team that can’t pass the ball and last time I checked Stephenson’s always been stout against the run

@Camden74, Stephenson not talking because they know what they have (nothing)
@Decatur 4 life, Crow, Crow, I will eat buzzard if Stephenson can beat us. They are simply not very good. You must not have seen them play. I have a few times (during our bye weeks, against
Dunwoody and Lakeside), they just try and throw it up in the air to their tall receivers, which we won’t give them time, and the alternate 6 or 7 running backs. That means you have none (is that not correct). I mean when is the last time you have not known who the man was at Stephenson (ok Stephenson, whose the man for your team, I’ll wait for it). NO ANSWER I thought so. Lb’s are not very fast, corners and safeties are suspect. That is why I’m confident, any further questions.
