Poll Talk: Should a 2-4 team be ranked? Lovett stays at No. 10

We’re looking at some pretty good games this week …

Stephenson-Tucker (both undefeated)
West Forsyth-Johns Creek (both undefeated)
Fitzgerald-Brooks County
Calvary Day-Savannah Christian
Lincoln County-Aquinas (last great public-private game of season)

Then there’s Lowndes-Valdosta thing, maybe the state’s best rivalry.

But let’s talk about Lovett – 2-4 record, losers of four straight. How can the Lions be ranked?

One effect of going to six classifications this season was smaller regions. Which means fewer region games. No better example exists than Region 6-AA, which has five teams. Four of them are potential Top 10 teams in GAC, Lovett, Westminster and Wesleyan.

With only four region games, those teams had six non-regions to schedule.

Lovett has played six games, five against teams currently ranked in highest classifications. Those are #8 Blessed Trinity (AAA), No. 2 Marist (AAAA), No. 5 St. Pius (AAA), No. 7 Fort Payne (AAAAA in Alabama) and No. 3 Washington County (AAA). (Lovett is the only team to come within 14 points of Fort Wayne, btw.)

The non-ranked team is Woodward Academy. Woodward is 4-2, its losses to Lovett and Blessed Trinity. Woodward has been in and out of the AAA rankings twice and might still get in there before the season is done.

The Maxwell Ratings rank Lovett’s schedule as sixth-toughest in the state – in all classifications. Further Lovett’s average opponent is 29 points better than the average opponent of the other nine Top 10 teams in AA, according to Maxwell.

Strength of schedule is not enough. You still have to beat somebody. Lovett has beaten Blessed Trinity and Woodward. The only team in AA with two wins that good is No. 1 Calhoun (Carrollton, Ridgeland).

Carver-ATL — 5-0 start is great, but ya’ll haven’t played a single team with a winning record after 5 games or any ranked teams.

It’s funny how certain bloggers just disappear after a loss. Dang, I could understand if it were playoff time, but during the regular season, very interesting! Go Camden County Wildcats! :-D

@Camden74 Last time I checked 5A was the highest classification last year, so you havent competed on this level either. I wish you good ol boys would stop anointing yourselves as so special. The playoffs will speak for themselves. and by the way if you had witnessed that Colquitt Lovejoy game and saw the nonsense that took place you might have an entirely different viewpoint on things or maybe not cause all you boys down there might think alike.

In 120 hours I hope I feel much better than I do now. It will be 9:10pm on Friday night, and my Vikings will be knocking heads with the Valdosta Wildcats at Cleveland Field. Dang, the last 49 seconds of lst year’s game still hurts. But memories of 2009’s 57 to 15 Lowndes win helps to soothe the pain.

For those who don’t know or choose to remember, Valdosta scored twice in the last 49 seconds to defeat Lowndes 21 to 17 last year. UGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you THINK our players have been reminded of that?

LovejoyDad……Just in case you didn’t know, or better still, don’t understand, most of the teams that were 5A last season, are 6A this season. They were in the highest classification last season, which means they have played at the highest level before. Now, unless I’m mistaken, Lovejoy did not play at the highest classification last season, is that correct? :-)

LovejoyDad……I watched the game between Colquitt and Lovejoy. If Lovejoy wasn’t so undisciplined, they probably would have won the game! But that’s what happens when you play with the BIG BOYS! Sometimes you just get over whelmed! :-)

D-Nice…….Thanks!….. It could be any of several things, 1) They have no idea how hard the young men at Camden work. 2) They have no idea how hard players have to work to get to Camden’s position and 3) Too much HATERADE! :-D

@Camden74-You don’t believe Norcross has a chance? That is funny. We would give you boys all you want and more. We are more athletic and have more team speed than Camden on both sides of the ball. We watched you play in the dome against a poor Peachtree Ridge team and you still haven’t played anyone. Norcross has beaten 3 top ten teams thus far. I got news for you buddy…Camden is not nearly as good as you think they are and I’d bet a ton of money that Norcross would be 7-3 if we played Camden 10 times. I know that your team is really all you have down there but I would find something else to worship before playoff time because you aren’t going to make it to the Dome.

The Cross……Know what, you very well could be right, there is a chance Camden won’t make it to the Title Game. But there’s an even greater chance that Norcross won’t make it! You’re definitely right about Norcross having the athletes. What you seem not to understand is that it takes MORE than athletic ability to win championships! :-D

Lowndes and Camden are good teams, but you don’t have any wins yet that tell me that they are great teams. Norcross has one of the toughest schedules in the state. Giving up 7.5 points per game or 2 points per game means nothing if you are not playing any real competition. The meat of both your schedules are coming up and we will see if you guys can pass the tests. I know two things, one is that Lowndes and Camden can’t go undefeated and two history will play no part in 2012. This years teams have to play the games. If your players and coaches are as arrogant as Camden 74 or BKSmith14 then either team has a shot.

@The Cross – I’m with you. Let the players play the games. There are really good teams playing in south GA. There are also a few with a big ego, apparently, from adults that behave immaturely by shooting off their mouths, and misrepresenting the teams they root for. We see it every year.

The Cross…….When Norcross actually wins a game worth talking about, let us know! Until that time, Norcross is just like the rest of the WANNA BEs in the state…… I hear/read the same HYPE about certain teams every year, but I never see them in the Dome at the end! It’s obvious you guys don’t have a clue as to what it takes to win on the big stage. All I hear about is athletic ability. If all it takes is athletic ability to win State Titles, then teams like Norcross, Stephenson, Lovejoy… etc.,would win every year! :-)

@ bksmith14 == If those kids played on friday in the varsity game, your varsity gave up the points.@ Camden74 == You must be about 14 or 15 years old. Not to know and after being continuosly told the same thing concerning this class stuff. Are you that jaded ? @ LovejoyDad == You might as well stop trying to explain this to him. He is so full of Camden that he is blind to reality.@ Camden74 == Lovejoy is now 43-28 in the highest class since it opened in 1990. I am sorry if you do not have much history that YOU can count on. All you know is the past few years. Do yourself a favor and look us up and note the longest stretch of losing. Mundys Mill opening was the reason Lovejoy has not enjoyed a 10 year run of consistant winning. The years 04-09, when half the talent was taken away. No excuses though. We are here now and ready to put people like you in a different mind set. Good luck friday. Don’t trip along the way.

Thats O.K. Now is what is at stake. Just for the very well informed Camden74 == 1990-2000, Lovejoy was 4A. Was that the highest class? From 2000-2005, Lovejoy was 5A. From 2006-2007, they droped to 4A. 2008-2009, they were 5A again and from 2010-2011, they were 4A. Now tell me, does this make more sense to you? In 2012, they created a new class called 6A. Lovejoy now plays there. That makes 7 of the past 11 years that Lovejoy has played in the highest class. Are you satisfied yet?

@Camden74-Again I am not discussing nor do I care about any season but this season and so far Norcross has bigger and better wins against quality opponents. If things fall just right we will play Camden in round three and I will bring the crow and the stuffing for your big mouth.

Man please, I agree that Marist’s region is a little watered down but not giving up any points. Columbia’s coaches had more to do with that than Marist’s defense, Marist defense didn’t dominate that game as the recap leads you to believe. Bad play calling yielded that shutout anytime you’re inside the 10 to start a possesion there are no excuses for not scoring

@ Yo == You are about as right as the difference between your comment and the post time. Lowndes has not played anyone , just like us. Except for Colquit, (ranked) Alpharetta(previously ranked). When you win a game that is of consequence, hit me back! Better still, see me in the 2nd. season.

sportsnut……Why is it that you guys can’t seem to understand it takes more than great athletes to win a State Title? Winning in the regular season year after year without a title becomes old hat after a while. If you take a look at Camden’s history, you’ll find there has always been a REGULAR SEASON winning tradition. But not until 2003 did a Camden School win a State Title since 1960! During that time, there were tons of great athletes! Regular season winning was not the issue, winning State Titles became the primary focus. As long as you guys thump your chest over winning regular season games, you’re going to get flack, especially from me! When you have the type of athletes that Norcross, Stephenson, Lovejoy…. etc. has, you should always be at least a threat to win state. No one fears your athletes, know why, because on the HS level, they NEVER live up to their potential! If you want to shut me up, take your GREAT ATHLETES to the State Title Game and WIN! :-D

Sportsnut….say what you want to……i go by how many points have been scored on the defense that is going to be on the field when it counts …not by the d that has been put on the field whn you are beating someone by 5 or 6 tds and its in the 4th qtr…

lowndes starters(varsity) have gave up 33 points in 6 games…….thats what i go by…you can go by what you want……..bc when and if we play lovejoy……the STARTERS will be on the field…not the jv

So, if y’all want me in particular, Region 1, 6A in general, to be quiet, shut us up by winning the State Title this year! Otherwise, y’all just talkin! Go Camden County Wildcats! :-D

@ Yo == last I heard, No one knows what the future holds. You say either you or Camden will be there ? If so, then you both have other worries and priorities. Get there.@ Camden74 == You are not clear within your own mind. You say “chest thumping” for regular season wins means nothing but you admit that you have always been a winner albiet with only 3 state titles. The accomplishments are great but they are not now. Then you state that it took a long while for you to get your first. Do we fit into that mold or is that exclusive to you ? If you have been playing football since 1960 and you have constantly been a winner and have only titles to show, It must have been a lot of “chest thumping”, I mean alot. That is 52 years of football. You should have won more with those ton of athletes you have had. Where were those things you say we need? You started playing 30 years before us and you only have 3 more state titles than we do. Go figure! That is all in the past. Your winning percentage is .686 over the life of the program as compared to .596 for Lovejoy. Not a very big difference in that , is it? We have been on the stage before but only once on the big stage. Playoffs in 97′, 98′, 99′, 01′, 02′, 03′, 04′, 07′, 10′ and 11′. Remember, we have only been open since 90′. You want to know who knocked us out? Those are the likes of NSWR, West-side Macon, Lowndes, Whitewater, Glynn Academy, Houston County and we lost the AAAA title to Tucker. So you see, we have been to the dance and been beat by better teams at the time. That was then, this is now.@ bksmith14 == If I or any other of these fans thought that way, all our teams would have a point yeild average around 3. The fact is that they play varsity ball. At Lovejoy, if you suit up and play, you are on the team. PERIOD!
