Grady eased by Therrell 36-0 Friday at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta in the Region 6-AAAA opener for both teams.
Grey Knights senior Kivon Taylor sneaked in from the 1-yard line twice in the second quarter to put his team up 17-0 at halftime. The 6’5 quarterback, who is receiving interest from several major programs, created both opportunities with his arm.
He found Deshawn Benton on a 39-yard strike to set up the first score, and completed two passes for 23 yards on the second drive. Taylor passed for 115 yards, with 84 going to Benton.
Grady added three rushing touchdowns in the second half to secure the win, including two from backup tailback Shomari Gervin. Gervin’s 19-yard run put the Grey Knights up 36-0 with just over 10 minutes left to play. Mark Reeves took in a 4-yard run between Gervin’s scores.
“We wanted to come out and set the tone, and we were able to do that,” Grady head coach Ronnie Millen said.
After giving up 57 points in consecutive games to North Clayton and Riverdale, the Grey Knights’ defense pitched its second shutout in a row. Therrell struggled to move the ball and managed only one drive with multiple first downs. The Panthers were held out of the end zone for the second straight game and the third time this season.
“We were able to avoid the injury bug,” Millen said. “That’s important because things will get tougher as the season moves on.”
Grady also continued its standing as the city’s top public school program over the last decade. With Millen as coach, the Grey Knights have won 90 games over the last 11 years.
Longsuffering on the football field continues for Therrell (0-5, 0-1), which has not won more than two games in a season since 2002, the school’s last winning season. The Panthers moved into Class AAAA from AA last season, and have lost seven straight games to the Grey Knights. Therrell last beat Grady in 1999.
