South Cobb is AAAAAA’s newest Cinderella.
The Eagles (5-0, 3-0) defeated sixth-ranked North Cobb 27-26 in overtime Friday and moved into a tie for first place in Region 4 with McEachern (3-2, 3-0).
Why call the Eagles a Cinderalla? South Cobb is 5-0 for the first time since 1999. South Cobb has won three region titles dating to the 1950s, the last one in 2005.
As far as the region goes, it’s far from over. McEachern plays at South Cobb on Friday, in fact.
But follow this trail of scores:
Walton 37, McEachern 35
North Cobb 49, Walton 17
South Cobb 27, North Cobb 26
Also note that South Cobb unofficially outgained North Cobb in total yards 431-189. This was no fluke of a missed extra point, which ultimately cost North Cobb the game in overtime. It was South Cobb that committed four turnovers and had to come back from a 14-0 deficit. Carlos Saldana made a 39-yard field goal to send it to the extra period, when South Cobb made its extra point, and North Cobb didn’t.
Congrats to coach Ed Koester, who struggled with a pair of 2-8 finishes before getting South Cobb on the road to contending. The Eagles have progressed to 7-4 to 8-4 to 5-0.
Other things we learned in AAAAAA in a week that wasn’t that educational, to be honest –
- Walton is not going to repeat as a region champion. The Raiders fell to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in Region 5, with a 21-9 loss to second-ranked Lassiter (6-0, 3-0). It was no surprise. Tyren Jones rushed for 189 yards on 32 carries, but the Alabama-committed running back needs more help for Walton to get back to the semifinals this year. The Lassiter-Milton game on Oct. 19 should decide Region 6.
- Peachtree Ridge is in trouble. The Lions haven’t had a losing season since 2004, but it seems inevitable now after a 41-10 loss to Collins Hill. That drops them to 2-4, and they have games with ranked opponents Norcross and North Gwinnett up coming. Collins Hill, meanwhile, is 4-1 and likely to make the playoffs out of Region 7.
- It’s a three-team race in Region 1. Or maybe one if Camden County continues to roll. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats beat Coffee 39-12 on Friday. Camden scorched Valdosta 43-6 the previous week. Only Lowndes and Colquitt County realistically stand in the way of Camden winning the region in its first season in it.

Camden surely looks unbeatable at this point in time. They have two hard conests ahead of them, however, the 1st being when they travel to Colquitt, and then when they come to Lowndes the next week, to end the regular season.
Lassiter looks “for real” as does Collins Hill. We already knew Grayson, NG, Brookwood, and Parkview were good. The big question are why was PR ranked so high earlier this year and can Lovejoy continue winning like they’ve been doing?

Coffee beat camden in the 2nd half …or at least outplayed them…….but camden spanked coffee in 1st half……..coffee defense made adjustments in 2nd half……..i talked to a friend of mine who lives in coffee who went to the game…..he said he feels lowndes can hang with camden and may have a shot……..we will see…….valdosta is next….and they will be up for us……always are no matter how good or bad they are…….i expect a good game next fri….
our gameplan when we play camden will be to eat up clock and get 3 yds per rush …..and keep jj and brice on the sidelines….same gameplan we had for colquitt and it worked perfectly…….if we execute it we can beat camden……but that will be easier said then done…….we are def much better than coffee ….i can assure you….

I liken the two Cobb teams to McEachern and Hillgrove the last couple of years, good teams but couldn’t make it past the second round of the playoffs.
IMO, both would be 2nd tier teams in regions 1-AAAAAA, 7-AAAAAA, 8-AAAAAA, and 1-AAAAA.
But good luck to both. A whole lot of new kids and moms and dads enjoying the winning experience.

I am not sure if Camden took their foot off the gas in the 3rd quarter and Coffee never quit or what but it was sure evident that Coffee outplayed us in the 3rd quarter. We have to learn that we can’t do that in this region with any team. We aint in Savannah no more! As for the refs…they looked lost the whole game and I mean for both teams. I never seen so many sideline warnings in the first quarter. they warned Camden but never warned Coffee just penalized them on their first one. Those zebras were very touchy tonight.

Lowndes has no chance against Camden. The score may be alittle closer thsn the Valdosta-Coffee defeats against Camden, but Camden will cruise. It will take a passing game to beat Camden, just like Colquitt did last year. Nobody will line up and run on Camden. Watching Lowndes pass defense against Brunswick makes me wonder what will happen next week if the Valdosta WR’s catch the ball. I think the Winnerville Classic will be very interesting!!! Valdosta is by far the most balanced run/pass team Lowndes has faced. Throw in the home field/rival thing, and it could be interesting!! I didn’t say Valdosta will win, but it could be make for an interesting region finish for the #2 #3 #4 playoff spots!!
Camden will go undefeated this year in region 1AAAAAA!!! Colquitt County has the best chance of upsetting Camden because of their ability to throw the ball. The problem Colquitt will have is Camden will shut down their running game making them one-demensional. The 1 weakness Camden has is their pass defense!!! They don’t pass rush or cover very well.

I agree Camden will beat everyone in this region this year so they better brag n enjoy why the getting is good. My V Cats had success running on Camden defense in the first half and we should of scored 21 on them that first half, but we still would of loss because they dominated that second half.

Seriously, Coffee scored 6 points in the 2nd half, Camden scored 7. Coffee was never a serious threat after Camden hung 32 on them unanswered in the first half, 17 in the first quarter. Cats blew 2 coverages (both identical spot) that cost them the 2 TD’s, otherwise, it would have been a shutout. Oh yea, no pass defense and no pass rush, 2 sacks, 5 knockdowns, 7 hurries, and 2 interceptions (1 returned for a TD). Not sure what game you were watching. So far, outscored the mighty Region 1 (Valdosta and Coffee) 82-18, sounds like Camden is back in Region 3. Games are looking familiar. One more thing: Coffee scored 12 points, so did Beach of Region 3 in week 4!

Wow great start for Camden Co in region play but i wouldn’t give them the crown just yet. They are good and will help bring the title back to south Ga.I mean Camden,Lowndes and Colquitt will be up against Atl schools for the title and it will be tough. But Camden has two very tough games against Lowndes and Colquitt both on senior night at the palace and hogpen. If anyone could win both those games then i would not only give them the region and state title. Well unlike BK who needs someone to tell him if Lowndes has a chance or not, i don’t. Against Camden it will be the first time this year that we will not be favored to win the game but i fully expect to win this game. It’s against Camden so i wont predict a score and the game will be great but i do expect to win.Not dissing Camden because they are for real but on senior night in Moultrie and the #1 team in the state in your own back yard if they beat Lowndes will be like a state title game!!! Should be outstanding!!! GOPACK

I thought you were a Lovejoy guy. you think they dropping out? I doubt it, based on their pedigree, and state final appearance, that gives them cred, to stay ranked. and will win that very weak region they are in. Every one of their remaining regular season games will be a blowout. Oh, and werent you the one that said Druid Hills would be a playoff team and I said no way? What do you think now? lost 49-7 to a previously winless team? Druid HIlls has heart, but they are totally overmatched in 6A, they dont have the speed or athletes to play this level.

Great game between North and South last night. Hey Region 4 folks, don’t sleep on South Cobb. They just hung in there and kept things close. Their QB Masha is dangerous and has a nice arm. He can also hurt you with his feet when his weapons are covered. Their kicker is a weapon too. If I were in 4-AAAAAA I would be taking the Eagles seriously! Tough group of kids.

The refs did warn Coffee before the second time a flag was thrown on the sideline thing. i was at the game. Coffee coaches lived on the field most of the game and they had 12 men in the huddle numerous times and did not get called on it. Also, if y’all have such a good coach why offense did not run no huddle or hurry up offense when so far behind. Maybe he can’t call plays that fast or his players can’t call them on the line of scrimmage. The Trojans were so slow huddling every play and taking

i will address 2 issues here
1. Valdosta has not faced a defense like they will face next fri………..camden defense is very good and smiliar to lowndes but look at the total amount of yards valdosta had on camden……..ouch!! camden is lucky that valdosta did not score 2 more tds at least……valdosta was their own worst enemny as far as that goes……but in the end 43-6 was the score…….and that is what matters….i still take lowndes defense over camden anyday of the week even on sundays
Lowndes will beat valdosta 31-17…….and the cats will not be able to stop lowndes run game
Camden will have to get by colquitt at colquitt…………which will not be easy……propst will have the refs buttered up and ready to call false start penalties on all camden linemen who “fart” before the snap….i say camden wins that game but close….27-17
camden is not going to stop lowndes running game……….they will make some plays and slow it down but lowndes is on a mission ………..valdosta is next in line….and after losing to brooks and giving up 28 and then losing to camden and giving up 43,…..i dont see good things in store for valdosta fri night……..their offense will spend a lot of time on the sidelines watching lowndes eat up the clock
camden is good…..very good..but coffee is not that good and valdosta is down this year………they have a very very young defense………….
camden, lowndes, colquitt have the best teams in this region
Lowndes has the best chance to beat camden bc if we execute our offense it will keep camdens offense on the sideline
colquitt………they have trouble running……..so if you can stop the pass……you will beat them………lowndes completely stopped theor pass game and had 3 ints to boot!!!
Lowndes had 3 ints last night as well…….that makes 13 on the year through 6 games

And just for kicks and giggles………
When lowndes and colquitt played……..here was the time of possesion for both teams
Lowndes – 28:27
Colquitt – 12:57
and that was against one of the top 3 defesnes in the state…….no doubt
lowndes ran 48 times for 230 yds
colquitt ran 22 times and had only 8 yards rushing net..ouch
and with the elite wideouts they have including ole miss committ bobbie hill……..they only had 148 yds passing…which about 60 yds of that came on one play
valdosta gonna find out friday……we ar emuch better than we were last year and they ..well…they are much worse than last year

wildcat fan — in my ole South Ga way of thinking, anybody in his right mind better be “afraid” of Camden. But a good, smart team CAN beat someone they respect enough to be afraid of. Just saying….I guess it depends on one’s definition of “afraid.” I think of it in terms of repecting someone’s ability, but not necessarily shaking in their cleats in fear. I assure you Lowndes has never and will never shake in our cleats in fear of anyone, Camden included! We do however have much respect for Camden, as we do for Valdosta. and Colquitt!

bksmith14, what your friend failed to let you know is that Coffee did have the ball for most of the 3rd quarter, but they only got 6 points, they did not out score Camden, Camden scored 7 points in the 2nd half, to Coffee’s 6. The score was 32-6 at the half. There wqas no need to run up the score. Camden slowed the pace down in the second half. Have idea why the coach attempted an onside kick, but it seemed to motivate Coffee. Coffee has a talented young team, so does Camden, every seems to be locked on #5 and the QB, yes they are valuable, but they don’t score all of the touchdowns for Camden. I have looked at their stats as a team and the scoring has been spread out among a lot of different folks. Coffee woke a sleeping giant in the 1st quarter, the defense for Coffee threw a running down hard after the whistle had blown and they were jumping around and high fiving. But, the very next play #5 went 55 yards for a touchdown, which began an offensive explosion. I saw a coach with confidence in his defense to keep Coffee where they had them. I saw an offense that could score at will when they needed. Did they give up some yards yes, but with all of the yards they gave up, they only gave up 12 points, 6 in the 2nd qtr and 6 in the 3rd qtr.

@bksmith14, I hope you understand that Camdens JV played most of the 4th qrt in the Valdosta game. So don’t think for a minute that all of that yardage was gained against our first team D. You said Valdosta could have scored another touchdown or two, maybe so. But if we(Camden) really wanted to, we could have put 60 points on the board, EASY. Sometimes stats dont tell the whole story.

@ Dekalb County Guy = What you and I think is irrelevent. The status of Lovejoy football does not matter here. The favorites are exactly that, their favorites. On the subject of DHHS, they can make the playoffs. Luella was always the pick to finish 2nd behind Lovejoy. As far as Newton, Rockdale and Alcovy are concerned, DHHS can play with them. Their main obstacle will be coaching. Even if they do not make it this year, they will next year. They have a strong class of 9th graders thatr are getting playing time now and there are about 10 of them that have played together for a few years and should they stay healthy and together, it will pay off in a year or two. If you looked at this past weeks playoff projections, you will find them as a viable candidate for the forth spot. @ GwinnettDad, Do not try to fit a square peg into a round hole. We are not Stephenson. We are that outsider no one is willing to acknowledge exist. We will see all of you in the 2nd. season.

@ BKSMITH14 – Valdosta has lost to the #2 team in 2A in the state and the #1 team in 6A in the state!!! None of the teams other than Colquitt that Lowndes has played all year are even ranked in the top 25 in the state.
I’m not bashing Lowndes, I’m just being real about the Vikings self proclaimed greatness!!
LOWNDES FANS WANT SOO MUCH FOR THEIR PROGRAM TO BE NATIONALLY RECONIZED THAT THEY HAVE BECOME OBSESSED WITH TRYING TO PROMOTE LOWNDES ANYWAY THEY CAN. YES, VALDOSTA HASN’T WON A TITLE SINCE 1998, BUT WE ARE STILL THE REASON THIS AREA IS RECONIZED AS WINNERSVILLE. LIVE WITH IT!!!!

winnersville is usually always a battle….no matter how bad the cats are how good they are and vice versa. I expect lowndes to hold valdosta to 17 or less and lowndes to score more..bc like bk…i agree valdosta has defensive problems..they dont have half the d colquitt has

I love high school football more than most. Before he graduated last year, my son played for Lassiter in the 2009, 10 and 11 seasons. Even though he is no longer there, we still go to all of the games to cheer on the guys that we have gotten to know over the past 3 seasons. We had a lot of fun watching our boys work hard and see that hard work pay off for THEM. We as parents/fans could just encourage them, wish them luck and cheer for them. What amazes me are the guys on here that speak as though they are the ones still playing and have some reason that they should boast about what their team did or another team did not do. What about the fact that these are high school kids do you not understand. Most of these kids will not have the opportunity to play at the next level and do it because it is fun and they enjoy being a part of something bigger then themselves. For you guys to take these games and turn them into something that they are not is a shame.

Holding the ball and scoring are two different things. Just saying. But it does show that the right team on the right night can beat Camden. Heck lil ole Hillgrove went down there a couple years back and beat’em in what, the 1st playoff game? I just hope Coffee bounces back and beats Valdosta and Colquitt.
Like someone else said, our region is strong from “top to Brunswick”, and Coffee can still have a very good season!

To all the Vikes that have not seen Valdosta play this year and are strikly talking on hear -say, the defense hasn’t been our problem. It has really been the lack of point scoring from the offense. Our Wr’s just haven’t stepped up as we had hoped. However, this will be the week they make plays!!!!!

If region 1 is holding Colquit up as a shining light with the best chance of beating Camden and still possibly being the region winner, Region 1 is not that strong behind Camden. Since Camden is having it’s way in the region, I will give them their due. There are going to be so, so many surprises in week 11 and 12. Consider this. Camden wins the region, play’s at home. The 2 seed also play’s a first round home game. Seeds 3 and 4 hit the road. Who’s waiting ? North Cobb, South Cobb or maybe McEachern ? DB’s better have their heads on a swievel and be in shape. Possible exit time for two of region 1’s best ? Seeding is so important. That is why we worry about not only region games but all of them. We love playing at home !

Sportsnut, you sure have a lot to say about a team that beat you.
Bk, now your holding stop watches in games to keep up w TOP? Good grief. And we ran for right at 200 yards Friday night. Our rushing numbers were skewed against Lowndes bc of the sacks, granted we still only had about 60 yards

Not overly concerned with valdosta this year. It will stay close in the beginning but the young defence is bound to make mistakes later on in the game. As far as Camden we have already spoke to herons forth cousins preschool teacher and she has assured us she will be on the sideline reading Camdens play for us. Wink wink

@ blk AND Topper- Camden will take each game seriously. We are not bragging about winning our first two region games. We still have 4 to go and anything can happen. The only thing I’ve said on here is Camden is coming to play and win that’s our goal. I am still not saying we are going undefeated but we will try.

Lots of comments from Region 1 … our region (6-AAAAAA) has started strong. Johns Creek, Lambert & West Forsyth – all undefeated. I believe West Forsyth is as good as anyone in all AAAAAA football.
We continue to win (still pretty new program … 25-6) since inception … tough finish with Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Chattahoochee, & West Forsyth.
Time will tell how our region measures up as a whole, but West Forsyth is the REAL DEAL!

Again, viking fans have to remind everyone, bksmith is one *******(you name it) that does not speak for all if any other Lowndes fans. Valdosta is ALWAYS a tough game with Lowndes regardless of talent on any given year.Camden is the real thing. don’t tell me how a team killed in the first half made adjustments in the second half unless they came back and WON the game. Camden let up on Coffee. Also is there actually a rule against stealing signals for inferior coaches. Why would football be different than say, baseball. Coaches have to change steal signals, pitch signals ect all the time.

i agree valdosta and lowndes is usually a good game…..even when valdosta has been bad……they have played lowndes close……..i think the biggest key in this game is going to be the defense….unless valdosta has all of a sudden found a way to play some D…then they will not have a shot to beat lowndes…bc lowndes has played d all year long

the fact that south cobb even made 5-0 just shows how far they`ve gone since then. I personally believe that south cobb has the best offense in the region and if we had some better defense we could defeat even Camden County.

WILDHAWG2012 –Ole Sportsnut won’t get off ya’ll will he? I kinda wish Colquitt could meet them again in the playoffs. A second butt whooping on his Lovejoys might cause him to respect the Packers a little more.I have absolutely no doubt Colquitt would put even more on’em a second time. By playoff time your offense will be clicking, if history is an indication.
But I can’t say too much. The last time we went to Lovejoy they gave us the worst whipping we’ve had since McPherson became our coach. And mannnn, I dang near froze to death at the dagburn game.
Our region’s number 2 team should meet Lovejoy in the 2nd round of the PO’s, if I read the charts correctly. And our 2nd team will have to travel TO sportsnut’s back yard to play it! Maybe if it’s the Vikings finishing 2nd, we can get revenge for 2002!

I hope you’re right bk! Keep calling it like you see it! We’ve got a huge hurdle this week, but one we CAN clear. Breaks will be important as will mistakes and hankies. Protecting the ball has never been more important. We can’t give their offense short fields, and we’ve got to score when we get the chance. Can’t leave points on the board like at Colquitt.
WILDHAWG2012, the brackets are on the GHSA web site. I have the site saved as an icon on my monitor, but you can google it, scroll around till you see it. Pretty simple, even for an old codger like me.
Region 1 AAAAAA is matched with 4-AAAAAA in the 1st round, this year. Marietta, North and South Cobb, Mceachern Hillgrove, Harrison, etc. Lovejoy’s region (2-AAAAAA) is matched up with Region 3 in the 1st round. That has newnan, East Coweta, etc. Looks like the region 1 and 4 winners will face the winners from regions 2 and 3 in the second round.

The thing you have to take into consideration about the McEachern loses to Grayson and Walton early in the season is that they were young and inexperienced with only 5 total starters returning. They played well in both games loses but this is why they ended up losing. I think with some games under their belt that they will show everyone that they can be legit contenders.
