Norcross 49, Mill Creek 41

Norcross remained undefeated and secured its hold in the region standings but not without a scare.

With a 35-point third-quarter lead, the Blue Devils appeared to have the game in hand, but then had to withstand a furious rally before defeating Mill Creek 49-41. Alvin Kamara and Myles Autry each scored two touchdowns as the Blue Devils improved to 5-0 and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Mill Creek dropped to 3-2, 2-1.

With less than seven minutes left in the third period, Norcross took a 49-14 lead when JaQuan Simpkins returned a fumble 99 yards. But Mill Creek, which has lost all seven games against Norcross, didn’t quit. In less than a 12-minute span, the Hawks scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions, the last two by Devozea Felton. His 24-yard touchdown catch on a screen pass from Daniel David trimmed the lead to 49-41 with 6:56 remaining.

Mill Creek’s defense stopped Norcross, but the Hawks’ ensuing drive was thwarted when Brandon Garner recovered a fumble by Jacorey Lewis. Mill Creek regained possession in the final two minutes but was unable to get a first down.

For most of the first three quarters, Norcross offense, led by Kamara and Autry, was unstoppable. The Blue Devils scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions to take a 35-14 lead into halftime.

On the third play of the game, Autry busted out of a pile and scampered 48 yards for a touchdown. Kamara, who’s rated as one of the best running backs in the nation, got into the end zone with a 24-yard burst and then a five-yarder, his seventh on the season.

That gave Norcross a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter before it blew the game open with 21 second-quarter points. Kamara capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown to give the visitors a 21-7 lead. Autry then scored his second touchdown when he caught a skinny post from Joseph Wilber, which made it 28-7 with 2:20 left in the second quarter.

After the Blue Devils’ defense, which held Mill Creek’s potent rushing attack to 39 yards in the half, forced a three-and-out, they marched 70 yards in 10 plays with Autry snaring a pass from Wilber on a skinny post.

Mill Creek’s Michael Cheeks returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to cut the lead to 28-14, but four plays later, Wilber hit Autry on a deep post for a 48-yard score and a 35-14 lead.

Simpkins also had an interception, one of three turnovers forced by the Blue Devils, who also recovered a muffed kickoff.

Wilber finished with 212 yards passing and three touchdowns (one rushing) and Norcross had 216 yards rushing. Daniel completed 15 of 29 passes for 182 and two touchdowns and had two rushing scores.

as usual maloofs team cant handle success when they get a comfortable lead, have seen that happen several times over the last few year, hopefully he can get that straightened out soon. good luck the rest of the way to the blue devils.

Watching Norcross on the internet a couple of times, it looks like a team with some very good players and not as much confidence as it should have.
