AAAAAA blog: Let’s talk Brookwood-Parkview, Camden-Valdosta, Norcross-Mill Creek, Skye Overton, Tyler Queen

Five things to watch this week in Class AAAAAA –

Brookwood-Parkview, the rivalry is back! – A decade ago, this was Georgia’s hottest rivalry. The two played for a state title, and Parkview won, making it 45 straight wins and three consecutive state titles. But Parkview has not won a region title since 2004 and has gone 1-6 against Brookwood since then. Parkview’s upset of previous No. 1-ranked Grayson changed things. A victory over Brookwood would put Parkview in the driver’s seat in 8-AAAAAA at 3-0 in region play, with all of the victories coming against playoff teams from last season.

Region 1 skirmishes begin – There three Region 1 games on the docket, each with special intrigue. Camden County goes to Valdosta. Camden has won 86 straight games that count in region standings, but this is Camden’s first game in R1 – the toughest in the state – after years in embarrassingly weak Region 3-AAAAA. Lowndes plays at Colquitt County in a game between Top 10 teams. Tift County plays at Coffee in a near ‘must-win’ game to decide which team below the ‘big four’ has the best shot at the playoffs.

Who’s in first in Region 7? – Norcross (4-0, 2-0) plays at Mill Creek (3-1, 2-0) in a game that will decide first place in Region 7, although Collins Hill (2-1, 1-0) also is undefeated. College scouts might be interested, too. Perhaps metro Atlanta’s top two uncommitted prospects are Norcross RB Alvin Kamara (427 yards rushing) and Mill Creek DT Kelsey Griffin. Norcross, ranked No. 3 and with a victory over 2011 region champion North Gwinnett, is the favorite.

Johns Creek can take another stop – Perhaps the best team in AAAAAA that nobody talks about is Johns Creek, a fourth-year school in north Fulton that is 4-0, 1-0 in Region 6. JC faces Chattahoochee (3-1, 1-0) and can take another step toward a Top 10 ranking with a victory. QB Skye Overton has had a terrific start. His four game totals are 38-of-65 passing, 574 yards, three touchdowns; 390 yards rushing, 10 touchdowns, 58 carries.

North Cobb can take another stop – Harrison (3-1, 2-0) has a sporty record in Region 4, but if North Cobb (3-0, 1-0) is a real state contender, this should not be a close game. North Cobb has not had a winning season since 2007, but a 49-17 over Walton has thrust the Warriors into the Top 10. QB Tyler Queen has thrown for 664 yards (221 per game), and WR Borishade has a Cobb-best 393 yards receiving and has scored six touchdowns, two on kick returns.

@CoffeeC100, I agree with you that Coffee has a good team, but to say that Coffee is big, fast, and has a great O-line and QB is over exaggerating, Yes, Coffee will beat Tift and Brunswick, but it will be a year or 2 before Coffee will be a good playoff team. Go Trojans!

@tiftblue, I know that Coffee does not have a great team this year, but I don’t want to see them go 3-7, and that’s what will happen if we lose to Tift.

If anyone is tech savvy and looking for a project, I think a Region 1 web blog/site or something would be successful. Especially if teh site featured a “where are they now” aspect where you follow their success through college…there are so many local athletes playing in the SEC, ACC, D2, and mid-majors from Valdosta/Lowndes alone. As a matter of fact, Jay Ratliff made All-Pro last year for the Dallas Cowboys (Lowndes HS) and I am not sure there was one article mention in the Valdosta Daily Times or the AJC….when ths site become profitable, just send me royalty checks, lol.

These guys report like Atlanta is a large city surrounded by a small state called Georgia. If my very good but very short memory is correct,Parkview slipped out of their last game because their opponent shanked a late fourth quarter field goal.”This is Camden’s first year in R1-the toughest in the state-” Camden is the best looking thing in R1. Todd, change the batteries in your glasses.

Curious? The AJC’s # 1 team (AJC’s pick) is playing tonight, but who gets most of the coverage? :-)

Who is going to get to use the excuse tonight in Region 1? Will it be Valdosta “We are young this year wait till next year” or will it be the standard Camden “the refs were horrible” war cry?

Well, its Friday night and Camden has yet again silence the critics with a convincing 43-6 beating of Region 1 Valdosta (For some odd reason the scoreboard wont update that game. Hmmm wonder why). AS expected Camden did what they do best and went after the win in their first away region game. Good job Valdosta it was a valiant effort. Now I see that Colquitt lost which puts them a game behind Camden and Lowdnes. It should be an interesting race for the crown. With Camden and Lowndes sitting atop the region, teams are going to play their hardest against them. Now the region title will still be up in the air seeing how Colquitt isnt going to just lay down, and lets not forget Coffee, Brunswick, Valdosta and Tift. The season is just starting to get good.

Now where are all the critics at saying Camden would struggle at Valdosta? Judging by the performance tonight, I think that Camden is well equipped and qualified to run the region. Believe that.

Colquitt just plain played awful tonight and Lowndes did just enough. 3 CC turnovers was the difference…LC has a fine running attack and their defense is relentless so hats off–but this was Colquitt’s poorest showing this season….Mighty Poor….

No I disagree… they are not the team they were last year, and couldn’t stop us the entire game, we had 10 illegal procedure calls and 3 hold calls, we did throw it once and was completed, but it was to the wrong team…

Boy no CC supporters on tonight??? believe me i know the feeling…. have good night…

Agree with doing well against Valdosta tonight… Running the table, I don’t think that will happen… Just my opinion… a long way to go to and beating up on Valdosta, and ya;ll have already won the region, not even winning the region but running the table, come on man… I got to give you this though you have s lot of confidence in your team after winning your first r1 game..

@battleaxekid
I believe that Camden has a shot at running the tables in the region. It wont be easy and they probably wont beat Lowdnes and Colquitt like that, although it is a possibilty. Camden has the talent and ability to run the tables in the region. Why I believe that is because Camden has turned into a 4 quarter team. They scored alot of their points in the 3rd and 4th quarter this game, very impressive for a smash mouth region that wears a team down. Never count out what Camden can do, they are on a mission.
Also Valdosta had a really talented team, enough to be in the Big Four of the region, so this was no small feat, beating Valdosta in Valdosta.

North Cobb’s secret weapon has to be Cameron Albright. Boy can that kid play. He mainly plays defense but has seen some time at WR and against Harrison even went in to QB and rushed for a TD. He had an interception in the endzone to keep Harrison from scoring and had a couple nice receptions. I think he’s best on Defense but is also a threat on offense.

@ Camden74 == That would be most unwise against Lovejoy. 165lbs. no way. I hope we get a chance to meet along the way. Good luck the remainder of the season. Handle your business, Camden County.
