HS cross country rankings: St. Pius girls take over top spot

By Stephen Black

Score Atlanta

In boys Class AAA, Woodward Academy knocked St. Pius off the top spot by winning the Battle of Atlanta in Hampton. The War Eagles impressed by defeating not only the Golden Lions but also Class AAAAA No. 1 McIntosh, No. 5 Union Grove, Class AAAAAA ranked teams Wheeler and Harrison and several other ranked teams from various classifications.

In the girls race at Hampton, McIntosh took the team title and, consequently, gets the nod at No. 2 in Class AAAAA pushing Lakeside-Evans, which finished third in the Battle of Atlanta, to No. 3. Winder-Barrow moved up to No. 4 after a strong showing (fifth place) in Hampton. St. Pius took over the top spot in Class AAA after finishing runner-up in Hampton.

As a result of a fourth-place finish in Hampton, Whitewater dove into the AAAAA rankings at No. 7.

Mill Creek won the boys Gwinnett County Championships, while Norcross came in second and Brookwood fourth. One mild surprise was Peachtree Ridge taking fourth place, and the Lions crept back into the top 10 as a result.

Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge swapped spots in the girls Class AAAAAA poll, after the Broncos won the Gwinnett County Championship.

Meanwhile, Athens Academy took over the top spot in the Class A boys poll after winning the First Annual Run Wild Meet at First Presbyterian. Holy Innocents’ jumped to No. 5 in the girls poll after a solid fifth place finish in the Run Wild Meet.

Milesplit Ga does a great job keeping up with xc throughout all of Ga. Working together with them would probably get a more accurate picture of the true standings. Thanks for your coverage

There are no true standings until Nov. 10th at the state meet. It’s all conjecture until then anyway…

Mr. Black: a number of top teams (e.g. Walton, Marietta) ran out of state in FL this weekend and did very well (1st, 2nd). That should factor into the coverage for this week. Next week, alot of the top teams will be at Great American in NC. Thank you.

Riverwood ranked #33rd in milesplit class 5A with an 18:52 average in your top 10? Oconee County with an 18:15 team average over N. Oconee with a 17:06 team average? Milesplit #20 Eagle’s Landing (18:14) & on your top 10 4A list while #3 Perry (17:21) Omitted? Someone did not do their research very well. I think that you might be be going by historical year to year rankings and what normally occurs, rather than what is a currently a reality.

Thank you for your coverage of cross country in our state. Although it may not get the attention of some of the glamour sports, I have found these student athletes to be some of the most mentally tough, hardest working kids around; both in the classroom and on the field. Please keep up the nice coverage.

Gosh I wish the AJC would do their home work before the rank teams in XC.
Use mile split if you’re too lazy to do research on the teams. don’t just look at the last races run on Sept. 22nd.
